Achieving Clean-Looking (non-pixelated) Graphics in iMovie

Here's my situation... Please help if you can!
I made a short movie to be played as the "auto-play" movie in my iDVD project. This movie is about a minute long, and includes several titles, as well as one logo. Because of the limited titling options in iMovie, I created my titles/logo in Illustrator, imported them into Photoshop, and saved them as high-res jpgs. I then imported the jpgs into iMovie to be used as clips.
Here's the problem: Everything I try seems to result in jagged graphics in iMovie -- especially, and importantly, my logo. I have tried copying different sizes of the vector art in Illustrator before "placing" in Photoshop. I have tried saving the jpg files in different resolutions from Photoshop. When I look at the resulting jpgs in Photoshop or Preview, etc., they all look clean and "high-res." Why then, don't they look good in iMovie, and what can I do?
Here's what I've also tried: I have saved the vector art as a .swf file from Illustrator. I can open it in Flash or Flash Viewer and it looks great. Since iMovie doesn't allow .swf files, I think I need a way to export the .swf as a Quicktime movie. Since I don't have QT Pro, I'm sorta stuck. I'm willing to pay for it, but I'm nervous that it won't work well, since I tried using the Quicktime export feature of the trial version of MediaEdit Pro, and it didn't look good.
Does anyone have any thoughts on 1) how to best achieve clean graphics in iMovie, 2) if my theoretical QT Pro solution would produce a good (great?) result, and 3) if there are any other options besides the complex routine I described above?
Many thanks in advance for your help...
-Jason

If you pressed the Create iDVD Project button in the iDVD tab of iMovie, the jaggies may have been added by iMovie when it rendered the images. There's info about that bug and workarounds here:

  • Pixel-by-pixel graphics

I'm working on a bioinformatics project that will use java. My data will be represented pixel-by-pixel, where the color of that pixel will represent of three variables in the dataset. The x and y dimensions are used for two other variables.
I've been looking through the Java 2D API and tutorials, and there doesn't seem to be a tutorial on pixel-by-pixel specification. Everything seems to be discussing shapes and lines instead.
In the end, I want a JFrame to pop up, draw the data to the screen, save the graph as a lossless, 8-color picture file, and terminate. Eventually, I hope to have thousands of these files, and I want to animate a change in the data over thousands of generations.
But first things first... how do I deal with pixel-by-pixel graphics generation?

g.setRGB(int x, int y, int rgb) where g is the graphics context of a BufferedImage, for example
    buf = new BufferedImage(width, height, BufferedImage.TYPE_INT_RGB);
    Graphics g = buf.getGraphics();
    g.setRGB(x, y, rgb);
    //or//
    g.setRGB(x, y, new Color(r, g, b).getRGB());
    have fun!

  • How do I get Adobe InDesign CS6 to export non-pixelated PNGs?

I am having trouble exporting PNGs from Adobe Indesign. The problem is they become very pixelated once they have been exported to PNG. However, when I export to JPEG, there is no pixelation, they look perfect! Has anyone else had this problem?
I need to export them as PNGs because some pages have transparency effects, which JPEG doesn't support.
Is this a bug in Adobe InDesign CS6? Is it a configuration option that I can change?
Below I have provided sample screenshots of the JPEG and PNG files, along with the export settings I used.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

To demonstrate this problem, I've uploaded a sample InDesign project which still exhibits the same PNG export problem:
Click here to download my sample InDesign project.
If anyone is able to generate a non-pixelated PNG from this sample InDesign project, please let me know how you did it.

You can't edit a video out of iTunes.
You would have to edit the video from the original film, either on your computer, or iPhone.

  • Pixel graphic after sleep mode

by the way if you are interested a background check about mac service care where i life:
to start with - i life in beijing - china, and have unfortunately not made the good service experiences my friends from oversees report me and i can read in the community here and there. apple seems really to value their clients out of the region i deal with.
we buy at the apple flagship store in sanlitun (nice architecture - nice products but differnt service policy than elswhere in the world - that is my impression at least) all our office equipment the last 3-4 years (macbook air (battery inflated after just 3 years), mac bookpros 2*15"&17" (harddisc failure after ~5month no replacement but only repair with waiting time of ~2 weeks+), imacs 24.5" (tons of death pixels from on day one and getting worse - no replacement right away but waiting time of 3 weeks for repair - last year harddisk failure), 4*19" 4*27" (all have the dust issue behind the screen - very anoying special if you do lots of graphic), ipad, 4 iphones (one with switch on of bottom failure after 8 month - no exchange), mini mac, 2*mini server (complete disk failure after 1.5 years repair only - waiting time 2 weeks for arrival of repacement 1 week for repair)...all our mac purchases are bought with extended apple care warranties btw). we finally i believe we buy them because they match our esthetic style - not our quality requests.
just reacently had a bad info on appletv - does not run with airplay on the equipment they sold me all the years as i know yet despite their yes...
but ok these are some of my own problems and i need to get along with them.
    but here is the issue:
do you have any idea what this pixel graphic issue could be on my mac book pro. it occures frequent, randomly after sleep periods - thus i call it sleep disorder -  and can not be forced to appear for demo issues, thus not easy to show the super busy geniuses at the counter. the screen first is black- nothing at all shows. just if i move the mouse squares get visible as if i used a sponge to clean a dusty table. sometimes a complete section of the screen changes as well. once i cleaned long enough i find the insert window for the password and enter it and here we go as if nothing happened.
the issue appeared after the harddisk of my second last macbook pro broke just a couple of month old (4 or so) in jan 2012. as mentioned above i got a harddrive and some related wires changed. when i finally got again problems with the harddisk and wifi connection the flagship store replaced it after some not so kind words back and forth the macbook in december 2012.
brand new machine - i mirrored the system but after a couple of sleep modes the pixelgraphic appeared again.
no one at apple can help me - even the guys in brussels who were very supportive (macline shop - completely differnt service experience) could not give an answer. at that very same day though on the counter a client next to me had just the same problem - so far so good - it is not only me in the world:)
i dont know what it is and what it's caused from - but i had a couple of very unpleasant comments  when some clients saw the problem at presentations.
    cheers

MacBook Pro (17-inch Late 2011), pixel graphic

I've had the same thing happen to my MacPro, although I haven't tried firefox, since upgrading form 10.6.5 to 10.6.6. Seems to happen more when waking from overnight sleep. The only thing I found to fix this is to restart the machine, very annoying.
My MacBook running 10.6.6 seems to work just fine.

  • Non NVidia graphics card issues with Adobe and Mountain Lion

It took me a while to figure it out, but now I am certain. If using a Mac with a non nvidia graphics card there will be issues in Mountain Lion while using Adobe products. I tested this with Illustrator CS6 for over a year on 5 different Mac computers.
    Here is what happens
As soon as I open Illustrator on a Mac without a NVidia graphics card and I attend to apply an shadow effect, Illustrator crashes. If I do this procedure on a Mac with a NVidia inside, all works well.
I tested this on the following Macs
MacBook Pro (Early 2009) with NVidia 9600M GT - it works
MacBook Pro (Early 2011) with Radeon 6750M - doesn't work
Mac Pro (Early 2009) with Radeo HD 5770 - doesn't work
The same Mac Pro (Early 2009) with NVidia GT120 - it works
MacBook Air (Mid 2012) with Intel HD 4000 - doesn't work
iMac (Late 2012) with NVidia 680MX - it works
Since I owned all these Macs, I could test it several times with different kind of software updates. 10.8, 10.8.1, 10.8.2 and 10.8.3 did deliver the same result. Everytime the same result.
Already got in touch with Adobe
With Illustrator CS5 it worked like a charme, so I assumed it could be an Adobe issue. But Adobe support told me, it's Apple's fault since 10.8 uses different processes for the graphics performance.
What can be done, to resolve this issue? I cannot buy only Macs with NVidia inside, since the small portable front of Macs is only coming with Intel graphics cards. And is there anybody out there, having this issue? I cannot be the only one, using shadows in Illustrator.

A typical response.  IMO it's most likely a combination of Adobe's reluctance to fix the issue combined with Apple's desire for advancement and change.  I've personally experienced several things that've become broken owing to Apple changing fundamental aspects of the OS, and the developers of the third-party software in question have either never fixed their software, or are taking their sweet time.  WireTap Studio and Snapz Pro from Ambrosia are a case in point, though they eventually fixed Snapz Pro.  Eventually…
Frankly, good luck getting either side to do anything about this.  Your best bet is probably getting in touch with AppleCare and seeing if you can get this escalated to Engineering, but I wouldn't hold your breath for a fix from either party.  Or perhaps one of the Apple mailing lists will prove useful.

  • Themes invisible, blank pages, colours not right, looks like a graphic error, but isn't one

    hey there
Keynote '08 (used on a 10.6.8 Mac OS X) doesn't work anymore. The only thing that works and looks as it should is the window itself with all the buttons and stuff.
I choose a theme and want to start working and all I can see is a blank page...no background,no letters etc.
I cannot see what I'm writing (cause everything's in white), only when I mark the letters I can see them. When I start the presentation I can either see nothing at all or a very ugly version of the theme and words, that looks as if the graphic card of my Mac had crashed. I cannot even choose different font colours...everything's just white.
Some of the themes appear....but a theme that's supposed to be in blue appears green....and so on. It's so strange!
Already finished keynotes can be opened with the app, but look the same. Everything looks like a graphic error so to speak. Pictures look as if they were a negative of the original picture.
The only way to look at an existing keynote is by using "preview" in the finder.
I've already deinstalled the software and put it on again.
    Nothing changed...
I just don't know what's going on here....
    Any ideas?? :-(

I have the same issue. Can somebody help, please.

Hi, I'd like to put a black and white effect on my colour footage which will look really sharp but which also looks bright so the whites look bright and the blacks look very dark . Any tips of which best effects to use to achieve this look in Prem Pro. Thanks

Under the Effects-Lumetri Looks-Desaturation choose a B and W effect. Then add the luma corrector from the Video effects-colour correction section. Adjust the brightness and contrast to get the effect you want.

  • Export a PDF and convert the vector-graphics to pixel-graphics

    Hey,
i want to export a PDF out of indesign CS3 and convert all vector-graphics to pixel-graphics.
Is there any solution, maybe a plugin, to do this?
    Thanks!!!!

You could apply a transparency effect to your vector objects that doesn't effect their appearance and make a flattener preset which forces everything to rasters—then export a flattened PDF using that preset. Why do need rasters?

    Hi, Chris.
This is interesting. Kind of a yin yang thing. I am graphic artist / UI designer who's looking for a developer. Are you a developer with access to the app store currently, as that seems to be an issue. Take a look at my site... http://www.raygunstudio.com (also check it on your iPhone) ... and you an answer me from there.

  • Import non iPhoto picture into iMovie

    Hi
First time poster, long time lurker.
is there anyway to use non iPhoto pictures in iMovie.
As a professional tog, I have never really used or liked iPhoto, so have mine catalogued and filed elsewhere.
    Hope you guys can help.

It's you, and people do mind you butting in. Stop hijacking other people's threads, it is not the done thing.
If you have a question start you own post, jumping in on another thread just causes confusion.
When you are in iMovie you select the small button that shows a camera on it (on the right hand side between the Music note and the 'T'. You should then see your iPhoto library, and be able to drag photos from here into your project. This is a standard operation in iMovie, if this does not work then you have some other issue on your machine that you have created during the transfer of the content from your PC.

  • Import non-iPhoto photo into iMovie

How do you import a non-iPhoto photo into iMovie? I cannot figure out a way to do this.
I use Adobe's Lightroom for all of my photo needs and would like to avoid iPhoto if possible.

You can drag and drop a photo into your project from the Finder. JPEG or PNG will work best.

  • Imported graphic looks soft/pixelated

I designed an arrow in Photoshop that I saved as a .Tiff and want to bring into FCP. It seems real soft around the edges (almost pixelated). Anyone have any advice for importing graphics that look good.
    Thanks.

    1. Are you suggesting that I change this to something else?
If you want your graphics to look good, yes. DV is the very BOTTOM of the barrel SD...and it doesn't treat graphics well. Change your sequence settings to ProRes for SD, or DV50 and they will look better. You will have to render everything, but the graphics will look better.
CAVIAT: If you are going to put this back on tape then don't do this. DV50 or ProRes cannot be output to a DV tape. If you are going back to tape, then you will have to live with the quality of the graphics. It is what it is. GIGO... Garbage In, Garbage Out.
    2. I have already edited most of the project. Will it cause any problems to change it at this point?
Well, you will have to render every clip...but you can wait until you output. You will get a bright green render bar above the footage, but it will still play fine. But it won't look full quality until you render everything.

  • Macbook Pro mid 2012 15" (non-retina) graphics tearing

    Hello everyone,
I would like to post my experiences using two identical macbook pros 2012 (non-retina, with nVidia GT650M 512MB) who presented the same graphics cards glitches and problems, and hopefully to obtain some information.
Exhibit 1: My own macbook pro
Bought from France, in November 2012. Used mainly for professional non-graphics programming, it's clean, no bloated software, and only necessary professional tools are installed. 16Gbytes of memory, by Crucial.
At some point during July, when the machine was relatively cold and I was watching a youtube video, this happened (see attached pics). The mouse was moving, and the computer was fully operational, but with this "glitchy graphics overlay". I logged out, and logged back in. Problem disappeared and appeared again at random times, 4 times during an hour. All those times, a log-out and log-in would fix the problem. After that, I could not reproduce it. Apple changed the motherboard, claiming that it could be a faulty nVidia card.
Exhibit 2: My brother's macbook pro
Bought from Greece, in february 2013. Same model as my own, same RAM, same specs. Used for professional video editing, no bloated software, mostly using Final Cut Pro X. He noticed various malfunctions with FCPX, like freezing when applying a visual effect, and graphics tearing when rendering (that's when the nVidia card kicks in, normally). Yesterday, same symptoms as my macbook pro appeared, graphics tearing, etc.
    EDIT: videos of the problem:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jGBijGMO9NE
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jnEXtVWgKKM
Both machines are in a completely different environment (I live in France, my brother in Greece), non-smoking areas, and have worked in completely different ways. Both with OS X 10.8.4.
That's two out of two. Given nVidia's background, I am starting to feel that my purchase is not so reliable as I originally thought, and I am thinking that this problem is more generic than originally seemed.
Does anyone have any relevant information on this matter? Could these problems be related to issues with nVidia drivers? Is there any information about unreliable nVidia graphics cards on 15 inch macbook pros mid-2012 (non-retina)?

    Hi there,
I would recommend taking a look at the troubleshooting steps found in the article below.
