ACK! "Your network home is in use" and I can't fix it!

One of my users constantly get the message "Your network home is in use" massage at login or logoff with the buttons titled "Sync Now" and "Sync Later", and I've tried most of what I've read here but the "in use" message returns each time:
- backed user up and then chose the "Sync Now" button
- deleted the user on the server and recreated
- deleted the user on the workstation and recreated
- deleted .mcxlc file/directory
Not sure how to proceed at this point.
Any ideas?
Network home folders are on an XserveRAID connected to a G5 Xserve running 10.4.8. Mobile users are only set to sync on login/logoff. The Workstation is a G5 running 10.4.8

I forgot to mention that this also seems like a problem within the specific user file, since I've been able to login the same workstation, setup a local account based on a test "Mobile" user from my server and it would sync properly and not display the message that the network home is in use.

  • "Your network home is in use" message

    Hi,
I have a user who just received this message when logging in. His network home was/is definitely not in use.
What can cause this message to appear?
    Thanks,
    b.

    Hi Patrick.
The way the system works is, that until you make a selection other than "Sync Later", your automatic syncs aren't going to work. Every time you "Sync Later", you are putting off the decision, so the server gets the response "Hey, this guy doesn't want to sync right now. We'll wait until next login, and we'll ask them again then."
Even deleting any number of preference files (such as MCX, homesync etc.) won't resolve the matter. At some point you'll need to select the "Sync Now" option.
As you've suggested, you'd probably want to make sure you have an accurate backup of the data first (external hard drive for example). But a lot of the time with this type of sync message, it's just a casual message to let you know that there has been some changes. Nothing too earth shattering.
But you can evaluate your users data now, comparing what's on the workstation, to what's in their home folder.
Usually, when a user has logged into their "non-standard" computer, done some work, and then logged back into the "standard PHD" computer, they will get a "Your network home has changed since your last synchronization. Please select the location of your latest files" type message, with the options "Network Home", "Local Home", "Sync Later". Your problem sounds similar to this, but not exactly the same.
When you're ready, I'd just do a backup of the user files just in case (better to be safe, right?), and then use the Sync Now button.
From there, you may want to log the user out, and log back in again, and see if syncing resumes.
After that, you can also try a "manual" sync, using the "Home" folder pull down menu in the Finder (looks like a little house, if you have it turned on in the Accounts prefs panel).
You may still need to trouble-shoot further after that. but that's the logical steps to follow first.
If you're prompted with the choices of Network home Vs Local Home, you'll need to decide which is most up-to-date.
    Hope this helps,
    Cheers,
    Derek

  • My email is being sent under a name I don't use and I can't fix it.

I have a new Macbook Pro with Lion.  I am brand new to Apple, and to OS X Lion.  When I set up my computer, I foolishly put my "legal" first name, Claude, because it's what i have on my credit card but I never use that name in ordinary discourse nor professionally.  There I use my middle name, Barnegat, because it's unique and has been lots of fun for me.  I don't want my clients to see the Claude name at all.
But, somehow, even though I've changed my name to Barnegat on the login screen, when I send an email it shows up on people's emailboxes as Claude!
How can I remove this??? I need help.  I just cannot abandon my old PC until I resolve this problem
    Thank you for your help.

    Hi Barnegat,
Don't panic. Open your Mail, click on the top grey bar beside the Apple logo. Mail > Preferences.
Once the Preferences window appeared, go to Accounts, and change your Full Name there back to Barnegat Blummis.
    Good luck.

I hope there is a solution to this problem note that I can not use the iPad now

Your question makes no sense and I'm not sure if you typed very quickly and autocorrect went nuts on you, or if you are not a native English speaker and Google Translate didn't work properly. If you are saying that you forgot the passcode to unlock the iPad, follow the instructions here.

    Hey susanneyes,
Sounds like you want to set up Firefox Sync. This will allow you to keep all of your instances of Firefox synchronized. Just follow the steps in [https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/what-firefox-sync?s=sync&r=0&as=s this article] and you'll be set.

  • How do i uninstall iphoto? it was preinstalled on my macbook pro when I bought it used and I can only update with the previous owners password.

how do i uninstall iphoto? it was preinstalled on my macbook pro when I bought it used and I can only update with the previous owners password.

Do you have the current MacOS X version 10.10.2?
Then you can simply move iPhoto from the Applications folder to the Trash,
sign into the App Store with your own AppleID
reload the "Featured" main page of the AppStore with ⌘R,
then download iPhoto with your own AppleID.
Make a backup of your iPhoto Library, before your launch the new iPhoto the first time,
If your current system is not Yosemite, you can only buy a boxed iLife 11 version of iPhoto to install it independent of the previous owner.

My mac seems to have a virus thats connected with a few apps i use and i can't use them without my computer glitching out even though i've reinstalled the apps a few times.  It's very frusterating especially when i'm doing someting when my  computer randomly freezes or justs logs out for no reason when i'm using the apps.

my MacBook Air tells me I'm out of memory.  to my knowledge I use only 65 GB for documents, photos, videos, apps, and it tells me that 75 GB is taken by "other"  What is in other, and how can I fix it?

For information about the Other category in the Storage display, see this support article. If the Storage display seems to be inaccurate, try rebuilding the Spotlight index.
Empty the Trash if you haven't already done so. If you use iPhoto, empty its internal Trash first:
              iPhoto ▹ Empty Trash
Do the same in other applications, such as Aperture, that have an internal Trash feature. Then restart the computer. That will temporarily free up some space.
According to Apple documentation, you need at least 9 GB of available space on the startup volume (as shown in the Finder Info window) for normal operation—not the mythical 10%, 15%, or any other percentage. You also need enough space left over to allow for growth of the data. There is little or no performance advantage to having more available space than the minimum Apple recommends. Available storage space that you'll never use is wasted space.
When Time Machine backs up a portable Mac, some of the free space will be used to make local snapshots, which are backup copies of recently deleted files. The space occupied by local snapshots is reported as available by the Finder, and should be considered as such. In the Storage display of System Information, local snapshots are shown as  Backups. The snapshots are automatically deleted when they expire or when free space falls below a certain level. You ordinarily don't need to, and should not, delete local snapshots yourself. If you followed bad advice to disable local snapshots by running a shell command, you may have ended up with a lot of data in the Other category. Ask for instructions in that case.
See this support article for some simple ways to free up storage space.
You can more effectively use a tool such as OmniDiskSweeper (ODS) or GrandPerspective (GP) to explore the volume and find out what's taking up the space. You can also delete files with it, but don't do that unless you're sure that you know what you're deleting and that all data is safely backed up. That means you have multiple backups, not just one. Note that ODS only works with OS X 10.8 or later. If you're running an older OS version, use GP.
Deleting files inside an iPhoto or Aperture library will corrupt the library. Any changes to a photo library must be made from within the application that created it. The same goes for Mail files.
Proceed further only if the problem isn't solved by the above steps.
ODS or GP can't see the whole filesystem when you run it just by double-clicking; it only sees files that you have permission to read. To see everything, you have to run it as root.
    Back up all data now.
If you have more than one user account, make sure you're logged in as an administrator. The administrator account is the one that was created automatically when you first set up the computer.
Install the app you downloaded in the Applications folder as usual. Quit it if it's running.
Triple-click anywhere in the corresponding line of text below on this page to select it, then copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C:
    sudo /Applications/OmniDiskSweeper.app/Contents/MacOS/OmniDiskSweeper
    sudo /Applications/GrandPerspective.app/Contents/MacOS/GrandPerspective
Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window by pressing command-V. You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator. Ignore any other messages that appear in the Terminal window.
The application window will open, eventually showing all files in all folders, sorted by size. It may take a few minutes for the app to finish scanning.
I don't recommend that you make a habit of doing this. Don't delete anything as root. If something needs to be deleted, make sure you know what it is and how it got there, and then delete it by other, safer, means. When in doubt, leave it alone or ask for guidance.
When you're done with the app, quit it and also quit Terminal.
