ACL's on the Internet Edge Routers

I have one query on ACL's on the internet edge routers. If we configure the ACL's as per the below weblink on the edge routers, we may not get all the logs on the firewall as the traffic is filtered at the router level and we donot enable logging on the router.
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/tech/tk648/tk361/technologies_white_paper09186a00801afc76.shtml
Unless we enable IDS on this segment there is no way of knowing any attacks towards the firewall or the router itself. I need some comments from security experts on this kind of implementation.
Thank You very much,

Hello Avil,
You need to necessarily need to have an IPS on your segment to know all the attacks hitting your network !!!!! with the anti-spoof ACL applied, as given above, you are only blocking standard protocols or ports coming inside your network.. there can still be attacks on known ports that you are allowing.. if i had to capture that, i would either put an IPS on my network (or SSM card with ASA) or enable logging on devices and put a CS-MARS on my network.. MARS is an extremely useful device, focussed on increasing LAN security with real-time maps on attacks and it also will say how to stop the attack !!!! so, i guess only a couple of options here for you.... not sure if anyone else have any other options...
Hope this helps.. all the best..

  • Guest access to the Internet with Guest Anchor Controller

    Hi;
We are doing our initial implementation of an enterprise wireless system.  I deployed a WLC 5508 connected to our data center core switch using LAG.  The 5508 is configured in FlexConnect mode since it is serving APs deployed to a handful of remote offices.  Employee wireless access has been rolled out and is working well.
I am designing guest access.  As is typical, I want to enforce a policy that guest wireless traffic is forwarded to the Internet Edge in our DMZ and directed out to the Internet.  We do not plan to deploy a Guest Anchor controller in the first phase of the roll out.
What is the best way to enforce forwarding of guest traffic towards the Internet Edge once the guest traffic arrives at the 5508?  A guest VLAN between the core switch and the Internet Edge isn't feasible since there is a firewall between the core and DMZ that is configured in Routed mode.
Thanks for the assistance!  Glenn Morrison

you'd have to do a VLAN between the core and the firewall for the guest traffic until you get the anchor installed.

  • ASA for internet edge and internal zones

    Hi,
Has anyone used a pair of ASA 5520s in HA to firewall the internet edge and to firewall traffic between internal security zones such as web and application layers? If so, is this best done using different security levels or contexts?
I'm thinking of using a routed context for securing the internet edge and then using seperate contexts for the web and application networks. Conexts will route via a L3 switch.
    Thanks,

    Thanks Varun
I will probably configure the ASA in routed single mode and use security levels between the different zones. There is only 1 ISP in this enviroment and I also need to support VPN termination on the internet edge.
In terms of sizing, the internet connection will be 300Mbps and the firewall throughput between zones needs to be above 500Mbps. I'm just thinking that the 5520 in active/standby will handle the internet bandwidth requirements but not the inter-zone requirements. Which model of ASA will be a good fit here?
    Thank you.

  • Internet Edge Router and the Firewall

What is the best way to monitor an Internet Edge router from the Internal network behind the Firewall?
We want to pull more information from the edge router like netflow.  We can use SNMPv3 and ACLs to keep the router secure.
But I am looking for the best config to keep both the router and firewall as secure as possible while still allowing us to monitor performance and faults.
I am running an ASA and a 2821.

I'd start with locking down the router configuration if you haven't already. Cisco Configuration Professional (free) offers a nice GUI for analyzing and delivering all the necessary commands to secure the router.
Getting Netflow from your router doesn't add much more than getting it from your ASA.
If you're querying through the firewall to the routers using SNMPv3 (and have deleted the v1/v2 communities) that's one good step. The only other thing I might suggest is sending syslogs to your management system from the router. To do that you'll need to add an access-list and probably a NAT entry to your firewall to allow the incoming syslog traffic.
Most important beyond all the technology is to make sure that your people follow a process to regularly analyze and act upon the information being reported and gathered. Without that all the rest isn't worth the time it take to implement it.

  • ACL Best Practice - On the Internet interface

I have a question relating to ACL's on a routers 'Internet' facing interface.
Further to reading several whitepapers on the topic, a recommended ACL would typically contain the following statements.
In addition, the Cisco SDM automatically generates a similar externally facing ACL:
    ip access-list extended INBOUND
    permit icmp any any echo
    permit icmp any any echo-reply
    permit icmp any any unreachable
    deny ip 10.0.0.0 0.255.255.255 any
    deny ip 172.16..0.0 0.15.255.255 any
    deny ip 192.168.0.0 0.0.255.255 any
    deny ip 127.0.0.0 0.255.255.255 any
    deny ip host 0.0.0.0 any
    deny ip any any
    My question is thus...
What is the point of lines 4-8 when the last line blocks them anyway?
I appreciate that when we view the ACL we can see the number of matches per explicit ACL entry, but in terms of blocking functionality, I can't see the added benefit.
Instead, the following ACL would provide the same benefit and be simpler to maintain.
    ip access-list extended INBOUND
    permit icmp any any echo
    permit icmp any any echo-reply
    permit icmp any any unreachable
    deny ip any any
    Am I missing something obvious?
    Thanks in advance for assistance,
    Regards.

    thanks Jon for your response.
With regard to your first suggestion relating to a possible typo, my intention was not "permit ip any any".
My main point is that there are several example configurations posted on the Internet which at the top of the ACL explicitly deny specfic types of traffic then have a blanket 'DENY ALL' at the end. Here's another example someone else has posted:
    http://www.velocityreviews.com/forums/t34618-cisco-837-wan-interface-accesslist.html
With regard to your second suggestion, your right, I should have included a command like:
permit tcp any any established log
I appreciate this ACL is not stateful and I should use either the firefall feature set or a dedicated firewall applicance.
My question primarily is related to my first point. i.e. what is the point of :
    deny ip 10.0.0.0 0.255.255.255 any
    deny ip 172.16..0.0 0.15.255.255 any
    deny ip 192.168.0.0 0.0.255.255 any
    deny ip 127.0.0.0 0.255.255.255 any
    deny ip host 0.0.0.0 any
when we have the following statement at the end:
    deny ip any any
There are many example Internet facing ACLs posted on the net that propose this same example configuration.
    thanks again for your response.

  • IPhone 2G doesn't connect to the Internet over the O2 and edge network??

    Hi people,
My iPhone won't connect to the Internet through the O2 and edge network, it used to work? Maybe an update has done something?? Any ideas to resolve my issue would be greatfully appreciated!! I have got software version 3.0 at the moment.

  • Securing Internet Edge Switch

I am fairly familiar with hardening of Cisco routers acting as an internet gateway, like enabling SSH and blocking inbound access to private range IP addressing via ACLs, disabling , but what about switches?   Is there a best practice on configuring a switch that is being used as a L3 device for internet access?
    Thanks...
    Andy

    Hi,
For L3 switch @ internet edge, you can use the similar security restrictions (ACLs, disabling services that is not needed etc) and inaddition 'admin down' the ports that are not being used. In addition to that if the switch IP not required to advertise to interenet, do not add the default route (you may need this incase of L3 behaviour, but you can judge better).

  • Connecting core switch to the internet ?

    Hi,
We have 2 6506's connected through an ether-channel trunk.
On these 6506's we have configured a vlan, vlan interface and 2 access ports for 2 ASA's.
These ASA's run in failover mode but only one ASA is physically connected at the moment.
We want to be more resilient so our provider has provided us with a redundant setup of routers for our internet connection.
However, for this construction they would need a layer 2 connection on our side to have HSRP running.
There are 2 options in my opinion :
    - Buy a set of switches to facilitate the layer-2 connection between te routers and to connect the outside of the ASA's.
    - Instead of buying 2 new switches, create a new unrouted vlan on our core 6506's and use access-ports for the routers and the ASA's.
But how safe is it to connected the core switch with an unrouted vlan to the internet router ?
In terms of vlan hopping or other possible attacks ?
I think i have to disable DTP, Spanning-Tree, CDP and maybe a lot more ?

I am as far as applying this to secure the port :
    switchport
    switchport mode access
    switchport access vlan X
    switchport nonegotiate
    spanning-tree bpdufilter enable
    spanning-tree portfast edge
    switchport port-security
    switchport port-security maximum 3
    switchport port-security violation restrict
    no cdp enable
    Any additions to this ?

  • WRT 120N- Cannot connect to the internet with more than one PC at a time.

Before I went on a three month vacation,I could connect 3 or 4 PC's either wireless or wired to my router with no problems at all.I have a desk top and a laptop computer which I use at home. After I returned,I found that I could connect to the internet with only one PC at a time.
If I was say, connected via my laptop,my desk top would continuously keep getting disconnected and vice versa.I have been reading the suggestions from experts here and have done a few checks based on them.I also cannot get to my router page which is 192.168.1.1 I keep getting a message that says "Problem Loading Page" and this happens with both,Firefox and Internet Explorer.I am running Windows 7 - 32 bit on my desk top and Vista Home Premium on my laptop.

I presume that this model is a modem **bleep** router as I do not have a separate modem with my system.I have a DSL connection and the firmware version of my router is ver.1.0.If I recall,I did upgrade to the next firmware upgrade a few months after I purchased the router but I am not sure.
I use both my PC's to run a small business venture and I am worried that resetting the router may cause some other problems and will stop me from using the internet.
The Command Prompt information above was taken from my laptop.

I suggest resetting the router. Make sure firmware is updated. You can download it here - http://homesupport.cisco.com/en-us/support/routers/WRT120N. After firmware upgrade, reset and reconfigure. Just access the link below to guide you setting up the router.

  • Issue in connecting to the internet wireless with my Linksys

OK. Here's the deal. I am entirely frustrated and also over my head trying to solve this on my own as I have no idea what I'm doing.
I have a Mac Powerbook, OS X (3.9). I have always connected to the internet wirelessly through my Linksys router (Wireless B Access Point, Model Wap 11).
I have recently moved and now use Comcast for my internet. When they installed my internet, I had not yet unpacked my wireless router, so I was set up to be connected via the actual cable plugged in. Now that the router is all set up, I cannot for the life of me get my wireless to work. Currently, I can use the internet wirelessly in other homes/school no problem. In those cases, I don't do anything, I just turn on my computer and it connects automatically. But for some reason in my apartment I cannot make it work.
I *think* the problem lies somewhere in the IP address area? If I look at my Airport settings and go to the TCP/IP tab, there is no information contained on the screen. Meaning, in the area where it says IP Address, Subnet Mask and Router, there is NO data listed, just gray empty space. The same goes for the DNS Servers and Search Domains areas, but at least in that case there is a white box to input text.
I can choose the "Configure IPv4 Using DHCP Manually" and that will let me input numbers, but I have no idea if I should even be playing around with this.
Also, perplexing me even more, is the fact that I can choose my Linksys internet connection through the Airport screen, and when I have selected it, I show full bars. But I can't actually connect.
Silly me, I attempted to call Comcast for help with the issue, but they say that as long as I can connect to the internet in any way (plugged in) then they do not care that I can't connect wirelessly.
I miss checking my email in bed...someone please help!!!
Thanks a million in advance for any and all help.

Are u talking about routers username , password? Well there is one routers username ,password (default is "admin") and the other is your cable ISP username , password (on the routers webpage). I am talking about the latter. If nothing works, try resetting your router ... You will have to configure it again (doesnt take much time if you know it).

  • Is there ANY possible way to back up my Macbook (2009, running on OSX 10.5.8) using Time Capsule using a cable/not using the internet? I'm willing to come in-store to do this if necessary!

Time Capsule/Time Machine were working fine until about 1-2 years ago when my family started having troubles with the internet provider (AT&T). While on a 2 hr long phone conversation with them trying to fix it, they changed the wireless key code or whatever so Time Capsule could no longer connect to the network (icing on the cake - they didn't even fix the issue). And it had been so long since I had initially set up Time Capsule that I didn't know how to set it up again.
Situation is a bit more complicated now because I'm living on campus in another state, and the campus wifi is very slow/goes in and out a lot. They don't recommend connecting routers to their network bc they say it will make it even worse.
It just makes me really nervous that I haven't backed up my laptop in a couple years. I have thousands of priceless photos and years of hard work that I would very much like to keep safe. I paid all this money to have an external drive and am dying to continue using it! It just doesn't make sense that I can only use it wirelessly - there must be another way. I'm desperate to back up my laptop and will come to Genius bar if necessary to resolve this issue!
    PLEASE HELP!!!

This can be done easily with ethernet.
    Please follow the instructions strictly.
To make it easier I want you to do this overnight so you can turn off all your current connection to the internet.
Just go to the airport fan in to the top right and turn airport off.
Get ethernet cable and connect the laptop to the TC lan port.. ie <-> ones.
Press and hold the reset on the TC for about 10sec. until the front led flashes rapidly.
Open the airport utility.. go to manual setup and change the wireless to off. (so other people around you cannot join your network of one).
Ignore all the errors.. they won't stop the backup working.
Go to the TM and reselect the backup target disk as the TC.
It should start after 2min and run through to completion.
That is it.. for a backup of many GB it might take a few hours.. so make sure the laptop has power plugged in and the sleep is off.. (on early ones I think this is needed but I am a late arrival to the scene).. sleep doesn't affect later OS.

    2) What are the step by step, to set up a LAN?
I can't seem to find that info anywhere. Maybe I am looking in all the wrong places...
I appreciate and Thank You in advance for any help...

The only difference between LAN and Internet is the size.
Depends on how you define LAN -- it may be multiple subnets glued with routers or just one big or small subnet with bridges, switches and/or hubs or simply a crossed UTP-cable..
    If you don't have routers then you won't need a /etc/defaultrouter (rm -f /etc/defaultrouter; /usr/sbin/route -fn)
    You should use RFC-1918 addresses; i.e. chunks with a suitable mask of your choice as parts or whole of 10./8 (10.0.0.0 - 10.255.255.255), 172.16/12 (172.16.0.0 - 172.31.255.255) and/or 192.168/16 (192.168.0.0 - 192.168.255.255). Example 10.0.0.0/255.255.255.0 for a (256-2=)254-node subnet; 10.20.30.40/255.255.255.252 would suite a crossed-cable subnet perfectly.
A DHCP-server would be nice for PC's. Solaris can do that (/usr/sadm/admin/bin/dhcpmgr).

Have you been able to access the internet previously and now it's suddenly not working, or are you still trying to access the internet for the first time on your iPad?  Are you at home trying to connect through your home router?  If you are at home, did you put your home routers encryption code as your password?  The encryption code is what your iPad is looking for and it is usually found on the router and is typically a 13 digit combination of letters and numbers.  Let us know......

  • I am trying to connect to my friend's wifi, i have a very strong signal indicated on my ipad, but cannot connect to the internet.  Yesterday i connected without any problem, can anybody tell me why i cannot connect today?

i am trying to connect to my friend's wifi, i have a very strong signal indicated on my ipad, but cannot connect to the internet.  Yesterday i connected without any problem, can anybody tell me why i cannot connect today?

    Some things to try first:
    1. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
    2. Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
    3. Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
    4. Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.
    5.  Renew IP Address: (especially if you are droping internet connection)
        •    Launch Settings app
        •    Tap on Wi-Fi
        •    Tap on the blue arrow of the Wi-Fi network that you connect to from the list
        •    In the window that opens, tap on the Renew Lease button

Note - When troubleshooting wifi connection problems, don't hold your iPad by hand. There have been a few reports that holding the iPad by hand, seems to attenuate the wifi signal.

My ipod 5th gen says it is connected to the internet and i can go on apps that require an internet connection but whe i try to use the weather or another app that uses your current location it cant find me???

If you open the Maps app where does that say you are located?
For location the iPod uses the location of nearby routers that are in Apple's database of routers and their location. Thus it appears that Apple's database is incorrect. You do not have to be connected to the router, just within range.
Apple periodically updates their database based on information they obtain from iPhones, The iPhone has to have turned on the option to send info to Apple. no one has found another way to get the location of a router added/corrected.
You can confirm that by going to well-know place with wifi like Starbucks or McDonalds
