  • Will OSX support Adaptec PCI Express scsi cards in an early 2008 Mac Pro?

I need to move my scsi interface scanner from a G4 machine and the old PCI Adaptec AHA 2930 CU card won't fit.  I was using Snow Leopard on the G4 unit - it still supported the Adaptec card and all was good.  My 23" Cinema display then bit the dust and I replaced it with with a 24" Cinema display with the mini display port connector.  I purchased an adapter from Kanex to make it compatible, but the adapter was defective - so I returned it.  Their reviews aren't very good - seem to have a lot of D.O.A. adapters - not sure I want to deal with the frustration, but it would be the least expensive option.
I do have, however, an early 2008 Mac Pro that I can use, provided that it supports the newer PCI Express scsi cards that Adaptec makes.  I'm not sure which one to get yet, either.  I'd rather not buy one and find out it won't work.  I can make a partition on the boot drive for Snow Leopard in case scsi isn't supported in later versions of OSX.  In case you're wondering, I did use a scsi to firewire adapter to run the scanner on my laptop for a while - but it stopped working and I can't locate any replacements (or the company - 2nd Wave Technologies - for that matter).  I haven't tried locating a scsi to usb adapter, but from what I can see, they are getting pretty scarce.  I'd replace the scanner, but it is fairly pricey and the newest model retails at the price of a small car - so that really isn't an option at this point.
Thanks in advance for any info.

Changed name of display adapter manufacturer.

Thanks for the response - I guess the question I should have asked is "Will OSX support scsi cards in an early 2008 Mac Pro and if so, which ones?"  I didn't realize Apple and Adaptec weren't working together - my G4 tower arrived with an Adaptec card in it when I bought it in 2000 (from a third party vendor, not directly from Apple).  It came with either OS 8.* or OS 9.  When I updated to OSX, everything continued working, so I didn't think much about it until I pondered using the Mac Pro for the scanner - at some point the G4 is going to stop working - need to have a solution before that happens.  The manuals I've been reading refer to the slots in the G4 machines as PCI.  The manual for the Mac Pro refers to the slots as PCI e.  These slots have fewer connectors, so I thought that the "Express" part of the name referred to this particular card configuration when compared to the longer card connectors in the G4 type of machines.
Can you tell me what scsi card brands will work in the Mac Pro?  I'd still like to pursue this option.  As I mentioned in my original post, buying a new scanner isn't in the cards right now - it costs more than the computer, so, although pricey, the card option is still less expensive.
    Thanks!

  • USB PCI-Express Card half working???

    I just purchased and installed a SYBA PCI-Express USB 2.0 5 Ports Controller Card (Model SD-PEX-NEC5U) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812186010&Tpk=SD-PEX-NEC5U
I think it's half-way working. I did some researching prior to my purchase and I was under the impression that the Mac Pro (2006) could accept any PCI-express card. I have my Kensington USB bluetooth adapter plugged in (to the internal port) and it powers the adapter light and both my wireless mouse and wireless keyboard work perfectly. However any of the devices I plugged into the rear 4 ports are not working... (ie my Western Digital 1 TB hard drive that has 2 partitions on - one for Time machine backups and one for regular storage)
According to the Syba website, Mac OSX is not listed as a supported OS. The card came with a drivers disc but doesn't have any Syba drivers on it... tons of other manufacturers.
Can anyone offer advice about installing drivers or "adding hardware" (a la Windows)? Again, it's working with my bluetooth... so whats up with my hard drive?

A safe place to check and start your research is OWC.
    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/firewire/add-ons-and-hubs/pci-pcmcia-cards
As for MyBook - they can be iffy; if a drive fails, it is built into the case, so I prefer to buy cases with USB/FW and that you can install a drive yourself, even if comes with one.
USB: when there is FireWire and you can easily add SATA PCIe, yes they cost more but then they can drive multiple drives at full performance too.
When you buy generic cards, see if they use the same chipset as found in Sonnet Allegro and others.
    Then check
http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/ for reports in their upgrade database and articles.
And no, it requires PCIe, but not just any (and even PC with Windows 7, some cards can also be problem).

  • PCI express 800 firewire card not working. Why?

    Hi,
I want to run a DV device for capturing video and a Lacie hard drive for storage so I bought a firewire 800 PCI express card. It does not recogize my drive or my camera. Does anyone know the score on this? If I run two drives on one bus, it's so bloody slow I can't work. So I was hoping that a 2nd bus would really help but I'm not getting anywhere with this PCI Express card. I have the Mac Book Pro 17" laptop.
    Thanks!

    Hello from Virginia,
What are your MBPro specs and are they compatible with the card you purchased.
I capture through the onboard FW800 port and use an Expresscard/34 card which gives me two eSata connections to my external HDs...works great.
Give us more details about the laptop and the card...make, model, compatibility...etc.

  • How does one find out if they PCI or PCI express

i have a dual 2.7ghz and im looking to pick up a PCI audio interface, how do i know if i have PCI slots or PCI-Express?

    Some more tidbits...
If you have AGP video, you don't have PCIe.
If your system has dual-core (or DP/DC) you have PCIe.
There are no 2.7GHz G5s that have PCIe currently. Harder to tell with 2.0, 2.3, and 2.5. The G5 2.0 came in PCI-X but then the 1.8DP PCI was upgraded to 2.0 cpus but retained PCI and 4 RAM slots (and has poor disk write PCI performance).
When I see "PCI" then it is a matter if it has 2 x 100MHx PCI slots and one 133MHz slot or is "just PCI 33MHz slots."

L'erreur basique: "Caméra already in use" s'affiche alors.

  • PCI Express Xtreme Audio Quest

I have an audio cable connecting from my keyboard output to the soundcard input but the sound is not coming out the speakers when I press a key. Can anyone help? This worked fine with the soundcard it came with but I can't get it to work with the SB card I just installed. All other sounds come through fine.

As the model name says; PCI Express -> you can connect this model into a PCI Express slot (x, x4 or x6 type slot). Remember always read the Requirements part too.
If your Motherboard doesn't have one then your card has more use in your bookshelf.

  • PCI Express interface control using LABVIEW

I've made my own PCI Express card which is meant for data transmission from external device to PC through PCI Express intergace.
Everything is being controlled by FPGA chip.
My qiestion is, how to make Labview be able to recognise the device and send data through PCIe interface?
Thanks you very in advance for you help.

    Hi
    Meghan,
    Thanks for your reply!
    Basically, this is a signal
acquisition system. The main part are ADC which is connected to FIFO memory and
then to PCI Express pins. Cyclone from ALTERA is meant to control all the
    processes.
Something similar you can find here:
http://www.knottsystems.com/cyclone.aspSo, all the system is located on the PCI
Express card which is supposed to communicate with a PC through PCI Express
    Bus.
There is a program inside the Cyclone which makes all the necessary
packages according to PCIe Specification for the data transmission through the
    Bus.
So the problem is how to get data into the PC using
    Labview.
    Thanks,

    Shuk'ran,

    Quote
sli was the one most important feature that sold all the voodoo cards until geforce came along and owned them.
That's kind of my point in a nutshell...SLI may allow for a performance increase that *seems* significant at the time, but thanks to Moore's law, within a year or two there will always be a new standalone card introduced that will outperform even the fastest currently available card running in SLI.  So given that, why pay the price premium, and give up a precious PCI slot, just to have what amounts to (in the long run) a slight improvement in video performance (take the Voodoo as an example...while 2x Voodoo's in SLI were considered blazing back in the day, by today's standards the difference between 1x Voodoo and 2x Voodoo would be practically immeasurable)?
Also, I doubt we'll see very many "does everything but isn't very fast" cards being intentionally/exclusively made for use in SLI mode, if only because in order to be marketable to more than a niche audience (as most people aren't going to want to have 2 video cards), a card needs to be able to perform well in a standalone type setup also, and this means that there probably isn't going to be much of a cost benefit to getting two lower-end cards and running them in SLI over getting a single higher-end card...while there may be times when it's possible to outperform the highest end card available by using two lower-end cards for less cost, I'd bet that as the "highest end card" moves from being bleeding edge to just plain "high end" the price on it will fall (because there's always a price premium for the bleeding edge stuff) to the point where it's actually cheaper to get the single high end card as opposed to the two lower-end cards (and I bet we'll see this soon with the 5900's).
...and as an aside, I don't think SLI was the Voodoo's most important selling feature...it was intended as a high performance, standalone video card (which, at the time, it was), which is why it initially carried a pricetag of around $300.  SLI was a feature intended to appeal to a small niche market of users who would want the most blazing performance currently available and who would be willing to pay a premium in order to get it...would you really sell graphics cards for $300 apeice if you were trying to convince people that they should buy *two* of them?

  • MSI K8N Diamond - PCI Express x1??

First, excuse me for my bad english, I'll try to do it well
I was searching for information about "MSI K8N Diamond", MSI motherboard with SLi technology. In the specifications web, I read that they are 2 PCI-Express x1 Slots in this motherboard. Exactly the information is:
    • Two PCI Express x16 slot (supports PCI Express Bus specification v1.0a compliant)
    • Two PCI Express x1 slots (support PCI Express Bus specification v1.0a compliant)
    • Three 32-bit v2.3 Master PCI bus slots (support 3.3v/5v PCI bus interface).
But when I came to see the motherboard's image, I couldn't found these two slots anywere. There they are 2 PCI-Express x16 and 3 "normal" PCI slots...
So, the question is if somebody knows where are those slots, or if it's only an error in the specifications web page...
    Early thanks!!

If u check the msi website and click the flash about the K8N Diamond it shows that it has
2 x PCI Express 16x/1x - meaning if one port is running 16x (i.e. non SLI) then the other can be utilised as a x1 port
bogus I know - especially seeing as the Asus board can support extra x1 slots
