  • Inporting JVC HD6 to Final Cut Pro???

    Hi,
I just purchased a JVC HD6 camcorder and want to know the easiest/best way to import the footage into FCP. I have the first version of Studio (FCP 5?) and a MacPro that's running OS 10.4+. JVC's .MOD files have thrown me for a loop.
Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Tracy

    Hey Tracy,
I use cyberlink’s powerdirector, it converts .mod files from my jvc media camera to avi, mpg 1&2 extremly well. find it with torrentbox or purchase a copy.
    or,
change the file extention to .m2v. This is an mpeg2 format and is recognized in adobe and includes audio, without any problems. Hope this helps.

  • Why does my 4:3 miniDV video keep getting captured as 16:9? (Vidi/Final Cut Pro question)

This is partially related to Final Cut Studio, although not necessarily.  I've been trying to back up dozens of my miniDV tapes on to my harddrive for several months now, racing against the clock as their video quality starts to degrade.  Since Final Cut Pro started giving me problems with the timecode breaks, I started using a capture program called Vidi instead (v0.4.7)  Everything was capturing well, considering, until just last week where several of my tapes, which were shot in 4:3, would capture as 16:9.  That is, the video files were clearly stretched to a 16:9 aspect ratio and appeared distorted.  Today I tried to go back to Final Cut (v6.0.6) to capture it the old way, and, lo and behold, the video was once again being stretched to 16:9.
    A few things:
    - I'm about as sure as I can be that these tapes were shot in 4:3.  I've watched them several times on my TV and they are played back in 4:3, with the black bars on the left and right.
    - I had actually captured video previously from one of these tapes a few years back and it recorded as a 4:3 video file, just as it should.
    - I definitely have "4:3" checked off in Vidi when I capture the video.  What's even more infuriating, is that BOTH Vidi and Final Cut show the video playing in its 4:3 aspect ration during apture.  It's only when I check the captured file that it's been stretched to 16:9
    - A tape I shot in 2008 captured perfectly with Vidi today - in it's 4:3 format.  That seems to imply that it's not a software setting issue.
I'm starting to lose my mind with this, especially since I haven't found a single reference to this problem anywhere else.  All I want is to get the raw DV data off of these tapes to work with at a future date, and I'd like it to be exactly as it was originally shot, not distorted.  Maybe some bit of code on these tapes got messed up over time, resulting in capture software to think it was shot in 16:9?  These tapes aren't anywhere near my oldest ones - they're from 2010 and 2011.  Is there something obvious I'm missing when I capture these videos?  If there's no other solution, is it possible to squeeze them back to 4:3?  It might not look as good as if were captured in it's native format, but I'm out of ideas.

Not sure if it makes any difference for archiving purposes, but dv files (dv streams) are not generally recommended for use in fcp.  .mov with the dv codec is how fcp captures SD video via firewire.  Someone a few months ago claimed that .dv was fine with fcp, but I seem to remember that audio will always need to be rendered and since I always use fcp for capture of DV material, it's not an issue for me.
You can use compressor to both convert to .mov with the dv codec and reset the anamorphic flag.  Not sure if there will be any loss of quality, so it might be worth testing this.  Perhaps someone with more knowledge will speak up regarding this or alternative methods of converting .dv to .mov
What problems are you having capturing from within fcp?  Shouldn't be a problem.  I find that setting the easy setup correctly is crucial for successful capturing.  Even if all the individual elements that seem to compose the easy set up are correct, there can still be problems.  Perhaps you might want to start a new thread regarding your capture problems and we can see if we can solve the problem.

  • How do I import directly from Canon XA10 with Final Cut X?

How do I import directly from Canon XA10 with Final Cut X?

I have an XA10, and importing is quite simple.  But you do have to make sure your camera is set to the proper settings to allow you to import the files into FCPX.
First, make sure the camera is powered on.  Connect it through the USB connection.  Then open the camera's viewfinder and press the button on the side of the camera that allows you to see the videos you've shot in the viewfinder.  (This toggle button toggles between seeing what the camera is pointed at live and seeing the thumbnails of the video you've already shot that are stored on the internal memory card.)  Now, the camera will present you with a menu asking which memory card you want to look at (there's an internal flash memory card, plus you can insert SD cards as well).  Choose the memory card on which your videos are stored within the camera, and then you'll be good to go.
Now you can go into your FCPX event and do the Import from Camera.  Now the Import from Camera interface will open up and you'll be able to select the XA10, where it will present you with all the videos that are on the camera's memory card that you selected.
From here,  you can select individual videos and import them, or you can set in and out points on videos and just import the parts you want.

There have been a lot of recent reports of difficulties sharing to DVD, but haven't been hearing about unreadable disks. Posibly there was an encoding error. Or it could have been bad media (blank disk).
Does it play in your Mac?
What brand of disks are you using?

  • Final Cut Pro X and JVC camera

Can anyone who saw the April preview of Final Cut Pro X tell me if it will contain the necessary codec for my JVC GY - HM100U camera? Many thanks.

    finnur,
I am interested in using this camera for a documentary shoot this fall.
most of the info I have read online has been from your posts here & it sounds like you love the camera.
Do you shoot in the XDCAM QT codec or using mp4? sounds like it works pretty well with FCP?
do you transcode to prores before editing?
Is there anything else I should know about the camera before i make the plunge?
    THANKS!

  • How Direct Import .AVI file in to Final Cut Pro 6

How can i Direct import .AVI Files in to Final Cut Pro 6..
Please Tell me Any kind of plugin or application or codec.....
    thankyou very much

The AVI file extension merely indicates that the video contained inside could be from any number of codecs; like a QuickTime .mov, .avi is just a wrapper. Saying you have an AVI file is much like saying you have a car ... it doesn't really tell us anything specific. You need to find out what codec it actually is, then you'll know whether or not it can be imported into FCP without conversion.
But you'd be better off converting it to a QuickTime codec that FCP works with natively prior to importing.

    AH...good.
There is no limit on the times you can install it from the DVDs. There's just a limit as to being able to run it on multiple machines AT THE SAME TIME. If your old computer dies, or you sell it (please reformat the drive so they don't get FCP for free), then you can install on a new computer fine.  And you are allowed to install on (1) desktop and (1) laptop at the same time as well...but only use it on one machine at any given time. Meaning you can use it on the desktop at work, and then when away from the office, on your laptop.
Long story short...you can install it fine without any issues.

  • Annoyed with JVC/Final Cut Pro import problem; will they ever fix this?

Annoyed with Final Cut Pro JVC import problem; will they ever fix this?
I've shot footage on JVC GY-HD111E in the UK in 720p/25p PAL mode.
I'm trying to import lots of short clips (average 10 seconds) into Final Cut Pro (latest version with 720p/25p support) with a new Mac Pro maxed out with ram and 3 extra internal HDs.
Problem is, on a scene-break i.e. pause/stop, Final Cut detects this and creates a new clip, but it takes about 5 seconds to 'searching for media" before it starts the new clip. Because some clips are only very short, this 5 second delay sometimes means I only get the final few frames of a clip, rather than the entire 5 seconds or so of it.
JVC UK are blaming Apple and are saying it is up to them to fix it as Premiere and Edius does not have this problem.
However, Symbiosis in the UK (who do HD-Connect box) say that the JVC ProHD cameras do not wrap the shots up properly at the end, they are kind of left open and this creates problems on scene-breaks.
I've tried turning off the "create new clip on timecode break" etc, but it does not make any difference, when I do this it simply quits capturing on a scene break. Besides I have about 300 cutaways like this and I don't want to spend the rest of the year breaking them up on the timeline as this would be a futile and long workflow.
I'm importing and working on a native HDV 720p/25p timeline and this is the way I want to work. I've already imported and edited 4 hours of footage, but these 4 hours were easy as all 4 tapes had no start/stop points, they were recorded continuously from beginning to end of tape for 64 minutes each time so importing was no problem; 1 clip per tape.
But now I've come to my 5 tapes containing hundreds of cutaways I'm kind of screwed and need some advise on how I can import them natively in HDV without losing this 5 seconds off the beginning of each clip whilst FCP searches for the media each time.
I've been told this issue is definately with FCP, any ideas how I can get around this?

I haven't heard of this JVC/FCP problem, so I can't comment on it. However, whoever shot the cutaways didn't do you, the editor, any favors.
I've been doing video since 1984, and I've got to say, anyone who shoots a scene that is only 5 or 6 seconds long on tape is making a huge mistake, and it's been that way since the beginning of computerized editing in the late 70s.
Shoot at least 5 seconds of pre-roll before the shot begins, then roll tape for at least 5 seconds after you've got the shot. That's the protocol I've followed for 22 years now. Tape is cheap, edit suite time isn't.
But laying down only 5 to 6 seconds for a scene is wrong, IMO.

    Wow. Okay...
I'll let the real veterans in this forum tackle your issues one after the other. But, I can tell you, all will be well.
My only comment would be re: your computer specs:

To be completely honest, FCPX is a RAM hog. It just is. But, RAM is relatively cheap, and the pay-off is good.
4GB is right on the edge, IMHO. 16G is ideal.
I wish you luck, hang in there, and standby for more help.

  • Is There any way to make a JVC GZ-HD7 compatible with Final Cut Pro X

    Hi
I have a JVC GZ-HD7AA and i need it to work with my New Macbook Pro and a 30 day trial version of Final Cut Pro X
Is there any way this will work?
i have tried it with imovie and it wouldn't work either. If it could just work with one of these programmes i would be happy.
Thankyou in advance for any responses.

I know nothing about the camera other than what I have just read.
It looks as though this may be one of the cameras whose maker thinks they're cleverer than anyone else and develops a non-standard video format that cannot be edited properly.
If you can copy the video files to your desktop, download MPEG Streamclip and use it to convert the files to ProRes 422.

I think I need plug-in.  Please let me know.  Thank you.

Well, the Nikon D7000 footage cannot be logged and transferred.  There is no plugin for that like there is for the Canon cameras. Nikon never developed one.  So the footage from that camera will need to be converted with Compressor or MPEG STREAMCLIP.
The JVC should work...what version of FCP are you on?
