ACR 3.7 using Nikon NEF plugin

Need a little help here. Searched most if not all threads on this subject and have followed all suggestions to rename, remove, nikons plugins from all of the suggested file locations. Installed ACR 3.7 but still have same problem. Opening NEF files in Bridge defaults to Nikon Capture editor rather that ACR. I've searched all of the hard drive for Nikon's nef plugin and all seems clear. What am I missing?
Any help here would be greatly appreciated...

"rename, remove, nikons plugins from all of the suggested file locations"
Rename how? You'll need to put an optional letter infront of the file name to disable the Nikon plug-in...simply renaming it won't keep it from loading.
And, jst to be sure it would be useful to confirm you are using the CR 3.7 plug-in with Photoshop CS2...right?
Reread how to correctly install the plug-in and make sure no Nikon plug-in is inside of the main Photoshop CS2 folder entirely-move it completely of of ANY plug-in folder.

  • ACR 8.5 and Nikon NEF: in Photoshop and Lightroom

Today I was on Nikon presentation. A manager from Russian office sad that Nikon gave Adobe some information how to open NEF files CORRECTLY in ACR, but that algorithms can be used ONLY in Photoshop, not in Lightroom. Is that true or fake? As I know, ACR for Ps and Lr is the same in case color reproduction (and has some differences in image correction).

To compare PS/ACR with LR, if you have both products, you can do an Export a TIF from LR and do a Save Image TIF from ACR, using the same parameters, and then open both in PS and layer one on top of the other, set the blend mode to Difference, merge the layers, and see if you have anything besides 0s for the pixel values of the combined layers.   You could stretch the image in Levels to make finding any non-zero pixels, easier.
It has been said, above, that LR 5.x versions had a bug where they did not apply noise-reduction or sharpening in some situations during the Export so its important to understand what precise versions of the products you're talking about.  Intending for the raw-conversion algorithms to be the same, and a coding error making them not so are two different things.  In other words the mathematics would be the same, but the implementation in a different programming language by different people could have coding errors.
As far as which of Nikon Capture or Adobe Lightroom/PS-ACR is better, the words someone says or writes are a fact if you have the recording or original documents, but the idea they are communicating is an opinion and you can really only list pros and cons for someone else to draw their own conclusion, and unless you're quoting word-for-word, your interpretation of what is being said is also somewhat of an opinion, yours.

  • Using Nikon D5200 NEF images in PSE

    Hi
I currently have PSE8 which will not read the NEF images from my Nikon D5200. I know that I can use the Adobe DNG Convertor 7.3 to convert them to DNG outside of PSE8 then work with the DNG images in PSE8. However, I would prefer, if possible, to work directly with the NEF images as a plugin.
    This article:
    http://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/global/camera-raw-compatible-applications.html
states that the current PSE11 can only support the Raw Camera Plugin up to 7.2. This article:
    http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-suite/kb/camera-raw-plug-supported-cameras.html
indicates that the Nikon D5200 requires the Raw Camera Plugin 7.3.
Q1 - Based on the above am I therefore correct that it is not currently possible to use Nikon D5200 NEF images directly in any currently available PSE?
Q2 - If, the answer to Q1 is Yes does anyone have a feel for whether its likely in the next version of PSE? Or would I have to save up for the full Photoshop program to do what I want?
    Thanks

The first link is out of date.
Yes, photoshop elements 11 supports camera raw 7.3
You should be able to update pse 11 to camera raw 7.3 by going to Help>Updates from within the pse 11 editor if you should decide to trial and/or purchase pse11.

  • Using PS Elements 10 and MUST access Nikon .NEF Raw images from Nikon D60 and D7100 cameras.

Previously installed update for D7100, but it's no longer recognizing the Nikon .NEF files.  What's the solution other than buying a new version? There are important images that need to be converted to JPEG for upload to a newsletter that will be published this week.  Thanks.

I am using Windows 7.  I think that the best path might be a third party conversion program.  Do you have a recommendation?

  • Feature request: Using Nikon SDK to convert NEFs like Capture NX

Consensus has it, and my experience supports it, the Nikon Capture NX conversion from RAW is superior to Lightrooms (documented very well here also:
Bill0722, "Copy original TIFF to DNG and import?" #1, 28 Aug 2007 10:39 am ).
According to Nikon their SDK is available for free:
    http://www.dpreview.com/news/0504/05042203nikonnefresponse.asp
    The salient points being:
"With the Nikon SDK, developers may design excellent and creative compatibility between the NEF and their software, all without compromising the integrity of the NEFs original concept, and ensuring that work done by the photographer during the picture taking process can be incorporated into the rendering of the image."
With that in mind I cannot see why Lightroom cannot use this SDK (at least as an optional alternative to their own) to convert Nikon NEF files with the same quality as Nikon Capture NX. It should also give the option of applying the camera settings to the conversion (as does Capture NX).
With that and an industrial strength noise reduction at noise ninja or neat image level, most of my Lightroom blues would be gone.
    Thanks,
    Håkon

    >Consensus has it, and my experience supports it, the Nikon Capture NX conversion from RAW is superior to Lightrooms
Uh huh...ok, well, I would suggest that Nikon has spread an evil fog into into industry that says all of a sudden, Nikon has some magic understanding of the needs and desires of digital photographers (note, Canon is suffering from the same disease)...
Prior to the release of digital cameras. the only thing the camera makers were responsible for was to provide a reasonable light tight environment and to focus an aerial on the film plane of the camera. It was up to the film makers to figure out what photographers wanted and create emulsions that suited them.
Since about 1999-2000 all of a sudden the camera makers are the judge of what makes a good image? I don't think so bud....I think you've been drinking the Nikon (or Canon) Cool-Aid...
Forget Nikon's SDK...first of all, it's proprietary meaning ya gotta sign an agreement to let Nikon dictate the way images will look (very, very unlikely in light of Camera Raw/Lightroom development) and second of all, who is Nikon to try to dictate something they have no historical basis nor traditional understanding in?
Give me a camera with light tight capability with a really nice lens and let me shoot what I want and make it look the way I want it to look. Screw "camera looks"...

  • PSE8/ACR won't show Nikon D7000 NEF files

Just got my Nikon D7000, but now it turns out, that PSE8/
ACR can't show the NEF files from the camera! What to do?

The Nikon D7000 will be supported by ACR 6.3, which should be released soon.  It is already available in Adobe Labs as RC, which will probably only work with Photoshop CS.

  • My ACR will not recognize Nikon RAW images

I had a friend take our family photos today and she used her Nikon d600 (rather than my Canon 5D MkII--she didn't want to use a camera than she didn't know how to use, understandably!). She gave me her SD card so that I could transfer the images to my computer and then do my own editing, etc. However, her Nikon (NEF) files are not being recognized by my ACR. What do I need to do? Is there a download? An update? A plugin? I'm totally unfamiliar with this problem.  PLEASE HELP!! (I have ACR version 5.7.0.213 and CS4.)

You need at least Adobe Camera Raw 7.2 and only Photoshop CS6 has it.
If upgrading to CS6 or the CC is out of the question, then you will be converting the D600 raws to dng format to open in ACR 5.7

  • No thumbnails for Nikon NEF files in finder

After upgrading to Tiger 10.4.2, Nikon NEF files imported through Image Capture no longer show a thumbnail image in the finder. The icon is a generic Preview document with RAW written on it.
I also have an issue when I go to change the default application used to open these files. In the info window I change the "open with" application and then select change all . . . at this point I get the confirmation window, click continue, the confirmation box closes and the file reverts back to the original Preview icon. Perhaps these two issues are related?
Anyone have an idea how to remedy these?

I have a Nikon D50 nef on my desktop. Double-clicking on it opens Photoshop, which launches Adobe Camera Raw. If you get that far and can make adjustments in the ACR panel, you are fine. That's what opens first.
Then you click "Open" in ACR and your nef opens in Photoshop and the document tab on top gives the .nef extension. You make your edits there, but if you close Photoshop, you won't save it as nef, it won't be in the Save file list. You save it as psd for example and close Photoshop.
You now have a nef with develop settings on your desktop and the psd you saved out of Photoshop.
All perfectly normal as J.J. said, Photoshop will edit the nef file, but it will be saved in a format other than nef.

  • PSE 13 and Nikon NEF files

Considering upgrading to PSE 13 and was wondering if PSE 13 supports Nikon NEF files for a Nikon D5300 without an additional plugin. The D5300 is shown as supported for version 8.6 converter and I currently have PSE 10 and have to use the DNG converter on all NEF files which is not only a pain but time consuming.

    Hi,
The D5300 is supported by camera raw 8.3 and later.
PSE 13 includes camera raw 8.6 so should be able to read your files.

  • Photoshop Elements 11's Organizer slow to load Nikon NEF file thumbnails

PSE 11's Organizer app is loading Nikon NEF file thumbnails very slowly in their thumbnail browser. Has anyone noticed this? Anyone has a fix?

The Nikon software uses the embedded jpeg thumbnail in the raw NEF file. The organizer creates the thumbnail from a converted version of your raw file; that way the thumbnail reflects the ACR default edits instead of that of your camera setting. The thumbnails in the organizer are updated if you do any edit to the raw files.
You can select a few images and run the 'update thumbnail' option to have their thumbnails created in priority.

  • Nikon nef raw files

hi guys first vsit to the forum but hopefully not last!
i use nikon d90 usually with nikons own capture nx2 software which is great for just tickling photos a bit before printing but sadly lacking on the creative side, so bought elements 7 , now the images straight from camera won`t open in elements but strangely i had scanned images in and altered in nx2 which open in raw in elements? after reading up some answers i tried changing 8bi plugins ( ie moving old one and putting new one in its place but still they won`t open !!!! which is a tad annoying . it might sound stupid but i still don`t know exactly which bits are in conflict anyone tried this with this camera combination cheers

As John explained, one of the key mistakes people make is not properly deleting the old plugin that is in the File Formats folder.
Please make sure/confirm that you deleted the old plug-in or moved it entirely out of the File FOrmats folder. Renaming them, or moving them to a subfolder of File Formats won't work.
This has nothing to do with installing camera profiles.

  • Does PS support RAW Nikon .NEF files

Can RAW (Nikon .NEF) files be imported into PS Elements 11

    Hi there
Yes, PS Elements 11 supports RAW files with the Camera Raw plugin. Just make sure you have the latest version of RAW installed and that you are using a compatible camera.

  • NIKON NEF files corruption

I have problem of NIKON NEF(NIKON D7000 CAMERA) files corruption after updating my MacAir to IOS Yosemite. I updated recently with latest Digital Raw Converter 9.06 but problem is still same. JPEG files are no problem. Any suggestion ho to solve? thanks

The answer is in this link.
FAQ: Will Photoshop Elements work with my camera, or Why won't my raw files open?
Each Nikon camera has its own particular NEF format. First select your camera model and look in the link about supported cameras for the necessary version of the ACR plugin.
The present version of Elements is 8.6. The dngconverter has a 'release candidate' version 8.7.

  • Downloading Nikon NEF Raw into Photoshop CS3

I recently changed from a Canon DSLR to a Nikon D5000.Like many other Nikon users I have hit a problem in trying to download Nikons NEF images into CS3 .On trying to open RAW images up comes the message "Unable to open document".I have checked on the bridge that the  ACR is 4-6-03 .Should I download ACR 5-6 or is it not compatible with CS3 ? If it is will it help solve problem.
I haven't opened NIKONS  software suite as I prefer to work with Photoshops RAW toolbar beside the downloaded image.Any advice appreciated

Your camera's images need ACR 5.4 to open them.
As you suspected this is not compatible with CS3 – it needs CS4.
You can however use the latest version of the stand-alone DNG converter to create files readable in CS3 if you don't want to upgrade Photoshop.

how can i set up cs2 to open these raw images? i am using an imac duo core in osX.4.11

What Nikon camera model? Each Nikon camera model generates different NEF (raw) files. Not all are supported by ACR 3.7.
