ACR 3.7 works better than 4.2 with RAW NEF - Why?

I've got CS3 with ACR 4.2 on my Mac. When I open RAW camera files in ACR 4.2 they end up desaturated. The reds in particular have mostly disappeared, but all the colors are annoyingly pale and wan. I then have to punch up the saturation, and often go into Camera Calibration to reinstate colors that have gone.
If I take the same images to my PC and open in CS2 via ACR3.7, the images have proper color saturation. I've checked the preference settings and they don't seem to be any different. And no, I'm not using the NEF plug-in on CS2 (which isn't available for CS3).
So why do my images end up so much better via 3.7 than via 4.2? Anyone got a theory? Is it because the default camera calibration in 4.2 is narrower than 3.7? I'm shooting with a Nikon D80 and a D200.

Tony, Tony, Tony

Got your four images.

First, there's the issue of the one you
erroneously claim to have converted in ACR 3.7 on your PC, especially since the metadata reveals it to be a NIKON SOFTWARE conversion and it has a NIKON profile embedded (Nikon sRGB 4.0.0.3001) as does the one specifically named Nikon View NX.JPG, yet the ones converted in ACR have sRGB IEC61966-2.1. embedded.

The truth is that that image was NOT converted in ACR 3.7 at all.

There can only be two reasons for that egregious error:

1. you are being disingenuous, which I do not want to believe; or

2. you had the Nikon plug-in installed on your PC, which overrides ACR, and you were using the Nikon plug-in all the time without realizing it. Even though you thought you were using ACR, you were using the Nikon software all the time in Photoshop CS2.

That has happened to many, many Nikon users. The Nikon plug-in sort of looks like ACR with a "simplified" interface, as users have described it. Nikon software installs that plug-in behind your back.

In any event, without the RAW image as I've been suggesting from the beginning, all I can tell you is that your images look a lot more natural to me in the ACR conversion, and the oversaturated two developed in Nikon View NX (again no Raw Converter metadata) are within the parameters I would expect.

In short, Tony, you are NOT seeing a difference between two different versions of ACR (as the title of this thread suggests) but ONLY between "the over-saturated, over-contrasty and over-sharpened images that appeal to most amateurs generated by the camera manufacturer's software", as I've been saying all along, and ACR's more natural rendition. Noise is also hidden by compressing the shadows so you don't see much of the noise inherent in the image.

Adobe Camera Raw, ACR, on the other hand, comes with default settings designed to give you the most detail possible (even if this sometimes means revealing some of the noise hidden by the camera manufacturers in their RAW conversion software), as well as the most natural images.

That being said, you can calibrate your camera to ACR and come up with your own settings to produce exactly what you want, including the JPEG-look of the camera manufacturer, and save that as your profile.

The key is to learn how to use ACR properly and to calibrate your camera to ACR.

The ACR defaults are nothing more than a suggested starting point.

The color temperature won't necessarily match either.

is the apple laptop with 4gb ram and i5 better than other laptop with 6gb ram and i5

Well it depends on the age. http://www.everymac.com/ should help you identify the age of the two models.
Apple may use two processors called i5, but newer models have different optimizations than older models.
The processor is usually not the main affect on speed. RAM helps, but barely unless everything is on an SSD already. Hard drive speed is usually the limiting factor of speed on computers. eSATA hard drives with higher RPM can often yield the fastest results because notebook hard drives tend to be slower that are not SSD, but for those you need either Express/34 or Thunderbolt based adapters.

The answer to your question as phrased is: never.
CS5 is history and it is not longer supported. There will not be any updates or bug fixes for CS5.
You need to convert the raw NEF files from your D810 to raw DNGs using the free, standalone Adobe DNG Converter 8.6 RC (beta), the first version ever to support that camera..

Will this new computer work a LOT better than the machine I currently have? Will it be a worthwhile upgrade? Will my video card work well for my intended purposes in Premiere?

Go to the CS5 Benchmark http://ppbm5.com/ and review the results

  • Using AC adapter to charge is better than charge it with USB cable?

I've been reading this on http://www.ipodbatteryfaq.com/
"When possible, always use the AC adapter (or vehicle adapter) for extended charging, not a FireWire cable attached to a computer."
The artical does not explain why, but I'm curious about it.
So, does charging iPod with USB cable really damage the battery?
Is it always better to charge iPod with AC adapter?
Any answer will be appreciated, thanks in advance anyway

Even if you use an a/c adaptor you still need the usb cable to connect it to the iPod. The very same cable you use to connect to the computer.
A firewire cable is something completely different, and although the 5th gen iPod will charge via a firewire cable they are not supplied with the iPod (because the iPod won't accept data transfer via firewire).
When reading about the iPod battery, you should remember that there is an awful lot of nonsense said. I've never found any difference whatsoever either charging via a mains adaptor or via a computer.

  • Working with raw/NEF Files..Software Choices?

Just got a new Nikon D50. I'm a pure consumer user, but I'm figuring I should at least consider using the NEF (raw) format some of the time. I gather that iPhoto will convert these to jpg files, but what about software for editing the pictures? As I said, pure consumer use here so I don't want to invest hundreds of dollars in some high end program. Are there some basic, consumer-oriented programs to consider? I have an Intel iMac, by the way. Thanks.

  • Why does my PS work better than my Lightroom 5 exporting jpegs from raw files?

    So,
I'm editing some raw files with Lightroom 5
but when I export the jpg file, the result is terrible, it looks washed out, loses contrast, noise levels are higher than the edited file on suite
However, if I do the same thing using camera raw through PsCS6, the exported jpg is perfect. Any reason for that to happen?
've been reading a lot about color spaces, and I don't think is the case, since the same doesn't happen with photoshop.
Also, it might be worth mentioning I'm exporting B&W images
    Thanks!

this is what I have in Lightroom after editing:

  • Does light room work better than Photoshop for raw conversion

What is the difference between photoshop and lightroom conversion from raw camera files. It seems that lightroom is putting my images in more of a middle of the road type of post production, where photoshop tends to be all over the place. As a professional photographer it is good to have a style, but do you think that this middle of the road approach will end up getting us all to conform to a single style rather than being individuals? If I change settings and take control then more images fall out of the bell curve and don't look as nice. http://www.blue2green.com here are some sample images. I am curious if anyone else is experiencing the same concerns

What Geoff said is accurate. I used to use Adobe Bridge/Photoshop ACR for camera RAW processing. But since LR has the same engine I use LR much more these days. And most times I don't even go into PhotoShop with my images and just print from LR -- LR is very powerful, especially since the release of LR4 and I find that I rarely need to use an outside editor like PhotoShop or NIK and OnOne plugins to do any post processing.

  • If you have an ipad2 with 3g, would a mobile wi-fi device work better than 3g?

Would it make more sense to purchase a mobile wi-fi device instead of activating the "built-in" verizon or at&t 3g component since so many people are experiencing problems? The wi-fi component of my IPAD2 works perfectly....I have not activated the Verizon 3g component.

I bought the ATT 3G iPad 1. I use wifi all the time and wanted the 3G for those rare times that I'm on vacation without wifi or am abroad. I did activate ATT for one month to be sure it worked - it did. Then I deactivated it; haven't reactivated it since. Since I don't have a smartphone, and I didn't want to get a long term plan with a mifi unit, I feel that my ATT iPad is right for me.
If you see no possibility of ever using 3G, then get the wifi iPad. If you plan to get a mifi (is this what you mean by "mobile wi-fi device"?) then you won't need a 3G iPad.

  • My old iPhone works better than 3G with Exchange!

So my battery dies after about 4 hours with Exchange Server and Push enabled.
I configured my old, 1st gen iPhone with exchange and push.
I configured my new, 3G iPhone with exchange and push.
Sitting them side by side, I noticed something peculiar:
The 3G iPhone was checking for mail about once every 15 seconds. The old iPhone didn't! When I sent mail to myself (from another account to Exchange), both phones got it at the same time.
What gives? They're both running on the same version 2.0.1.
No wonder my iPhone dies so fast, it's checking 4 times a minute!
    Help!

    Update for those interested:
I spent roughly 2 hours on the phone with support - which, by the way, was a very nice experience. After going through a variety of different options, it turns out that I simply had a defective phone. It should never be checking with Exchange Server every 10 seconds. The tech, Neil (sp), was very nice and setup an appointment at my nearby Apple store and that was it. Just went there and exchanged it - everything works perfectly now.
    Thanks Neil.

  • Touch screen works better than I'd hoped

Just had a chance to install a distributed exe on a Surface Pro. Very slick, so far. Several copies of logic and UI for duplicate controlled motion and sensors. Simple DAQ, this time (USB-6009), and USB-to-Ethernet adapter for UDP. Haven't seen MAX, yet, but someone here was running the LV2012 IDE with USB DAQ (of course an external monitor and a mouse helped a lot.)
Not to try a LV2013 app and see if a control with key focus will change value with a two-finger swipe (mouse scroll).
Disclaimer: I am not a Microsoft employee, but I have done work for them.

    Hi,
I'm trying to use the USB-6009 through Ethernet with a USB over IP adapter (http://www.startech.com/Networking-IO/USB-PS2/10-100-1000-Mbps-Gigabit-1-Port-USB-over-IP-Device-Ser... but NI Max doen't find the device. It does it if it is directly connected through the USB port. You mention a "USB-to-Ethernet adapter for UDP" that you are using. Have you had any success with it? If yes, please, could you recommend me which device you used?
    Many thanks,
    Alex

  • Comic Life Whine Fix - Works Better Than Photobooth?

Just curious about something. The Photobooth whine fix never really worked for me. As soon as I quit it, the whine came back. But Comic Life... I would open that and quit it - and the whine disappeared forever (well, at least until I open iChat). However, I did note with this fix, the processor usage stayed at zero (if I wasn't doing anything).
I'm just curious if others have had the same effect with Photobooth. I've heard people say that a lot of the other fixes were no good because they upped processor usage.
However, the Comic Life fix seems to not suffer from this problem.
    Thoughts?

Thanks... that did the trick. However, my processor usage indicator hovers at between 1 and 5 percent usage after that whereas with the Comic Life fix, it stays at around 0-1 percent usage. That would seem to indicate to me that using Comic Life (aside from being quicker - you just open and close) will preserve battery life longer.
