ACR 4.6 always opens "smart" objects ...

Installation is CS3 and Adobe Camera Raw 4.6.
Since recently, when we open any image (.jpg or .cr2), the Camera Raw always shows the "Open Object" button instead of the "Open Image" button.
One can get around this by holding the shift key (which changes the button back to "Open Image"), but I would like the behaviour to return to normal (="Open Image" is the default).
Any idea's where this is set or reset ?
TIA,
Bart

  • How to open smart object in camera raw

    Hi,
As the subject line reads, I'm having trouble opening a smart object in camera raw.  Every tutorial I read or watch says, "double click on your smart object thumbnail to open the image in camera raw."  But every time I do, all it does is open a copy of the image as a .psb file.
    Before you ask,
-The images I work with are stock images, JPG's.
    -I've tried to find an option in Photoshop > Preferences that will let me open smart objects in camera raw all the time;
-I've tried opening these files directly in camera raw.  When I do, there's a little link below the image that reads something like,
    Adobe RGB (1998); 8 bit; 2008 by 3000 (6.0 MP); 240 ppi
I click on it, and there's a 'click box for "open in Photoshop as smart objects";  clicking this will allow me to open the image in Camera Raw upon double clicking on the thumbnail.  But it will only work that way for that one instance of that one image.
    Anyway to make this happen?
    Thanks,
    KP

What is the .extension after your filename on this file? Needs to be .jpg, .tif or .psd.  Then choose open, and change format to Camera raw.
If you are saving as .jpg, the smart object has been bitmapped, and is a no longer smart object.

  • Lightroom 4 - Open Smart Object in Photoshop (or rather do not!)

Opening a PV2012 image as a smart object into Photoshop works ... except that all Lightroom adjustments are ignored.
No doubt this will be fixed when Adobe releases Photoshop CS6 and ACR 7.0 ... but that the latest version of Lightroom does not work properly with the latest release of Photoshop is nothing short of dreadful.
(Pretty smart marketing though, cause every time I upgrade Lightroom I also have to upgrade Photoshop!  I for one will be waiting to see if Adobe have the decency to release ACR 7.0 to run on CS5 ... and if not then my decision will be based on how good CS6 is as I do not see that LR4 has anything that I can't do with some plug-ins (like geoencoding and reverse geoencoding).  Of course if you want to write a book or do some trivial video editing then maybe LR4 will appeal to you.)
Very disappointing, when you consider that new cameras now have features like built-in HDR processing and Lightroom does not even have this - so that Photoshop or third-party software is required.

Jeff Schewe: Yes, Jeff, I'm well aware of that, having had to buy multiple versions of Lightroom and Photoshop, right up to LR4 and CS5.
In fact, the only reason for not releasing ACR 7.0 (or whatever) with LR4 has nothing to do with integration or functionality and everything to do with money: Adobe do not want to give away anything for free.  So if you open an ACR object using ACR 6.7, what you get is all of the functionality of Camera Raw, with the exception of the Basic Highlights/Shadows/Whites and Blacks sliders.  Everything else works just fine.  And this is opening a PV2012 Smart Object, not a PV2010 Smart Object.
What Adobe have done is simply to grey-out these sliders: not because they would not work, but because if they had not greyed them out then they would be giving free additional functionality to CS5 users.
HOWEVER ... as I have purchased LR4 which supports PV2012 (and therefore has the full Camera Raw support for PV2012) I should NOT have to buy Photoshop CS6 just in order to get ACR 7.0.  Adobe needs to find a way around this - and it would seem fairly simple to me for Photoshop to use the Lightroom raw engine if both Photoshop and Lightroom are present on the same machine (this is not rocket science).  This would mean that we would not need to use Camera Raw at all: the raw processing functionality would be provided by Lightroom.
Alternatively, Adobe could release a version of Camera Raw 7.0  (say ACR-LR4-7.0) that would only work if Lightroom 4 was also present.  Again this is not rocket science.
Or Adobe could release Camera Raw as a separate chargeable product (at a reasonable cost of let's say $25) so that they could make some money out of it without forcing people who do NOT want Photoshop CS6 to buy it JUST for ACR 7.0.
I'm pretty amazed the people aren't screaming about this ... cause it REALLY annoys me!

  • Illustrator Application Window Resizes When Opening Smart Object from PSD

Hi All, I've taken a vector graphic created in AI CS4 and pasted it into my PSD CS4 doc as a smart object. When the original AI file was created the application window was set as I preferred it, filling my screen. When I double click the Smart Object in PSD to edit it back in Illy, the window that contains the application has been switched off of the fill screen mode and is quite a bit smaller. I know it's small but now I have to click the maximize icon in the application bar to get Illy to fill the screen again. It wouldn't be so bad once, but the application window resizes itself every time I punch back into the smart object from PSD.
Any ideas on how I can get the AI environment from switching around on its own??
Win 7, CS4, all patches current, Dual 22" montiors
    thnx,
    jeff

I just want to point out that when you open the smart object of course it is not the same file as the original but an embedded copy of it.
That might also have something to do with this issue and might also be a photoshop issue with the smart object and one reason might be that Photoshop is see the image as resolution and Illustrator sees it as a dimension and the teams might be able to do something about this but might not actually be aware of it unless you file a report even if it is not a bug it would then be a feature request.
They might not be able to do anything about it but then there might be a clever engineer with an idea, so it might be worth the report.

  • Opening Smart Objects with AppleScript.  How do I open the inner PSD with applescript with a smart object?

I have a PSD or a PSB.  I need to be able to open all of the smart objects in the file so that i can get to the inner psd files so i can pull data from those.  Is this possible?  If not it definitely should be.  Thank you very much.  I am on a mac and will be using applescript.

You will NOT be able to do this directly with the model exposed to the AppleScript Dictionary…
You may be able to dig deeper in to PS with Action Manager code…
You can record this by using the scriptlistener plug-in…
As far as AppleScript is concerned this is JavaScript so just pass it to the do javascript command

  • Save new camera raw defaults for already opened smart objects.

I've a question about Photoshop and Smart Objects, as I like to use Smart Filters. I open my raw photos in Camera Raw, I adjust them and then continue editing in Photoshop as smart objects.
My problem is that if during editing in Photoshop I adjust again some parameters reopening the photo in Camera Raw, there's no way I can save the new adjustments for the next time I want to open the raw again.
I happened to me I changed a lot of parameters and I wanted to have them as defaults for that photo.
Quite simply: if I I want to save new Camera Raw edits as defaults for that photo, how can I do?
P.S. I tried saving a new snapshot, but they disappear if I open the raw again.

Thanks for your answer. Actually inserting the photo as a linked object does what I want, but it's awkward, slow and not so immediate. Also I have to open the photo from the beginning like that, as a new layer.
There should be an option inside camera raw like "update original with new settings".

  • Open as Smart Object as Layers in Photoshop?

I apologize if this has been addressed already, but I am looking for a way to open Smart Objects as LAYERS.  I do compositing work and would like to retain as much information as possible by using Smart Objects PRIOR to going into Photoshop.  My current workflow is to highlight the photos in Lightroom CC > Open as Smart Object in Photoshop CC > Manually Drag layers from each open file in Photoshop to main PSD.
Edit - Opening as Layers in Photoshop then applying the Camera Raw Filter is not a good work around, information is lost.

    davepinminn wrote:
I must still be doing something wrong here..............
You have the wrong expectation—namely because you don't grasp the concept. A smart object is not a linked file.  It's a new file all on its own (in PSB format) with no connection to the original file at all.
    davepinminn wrote:
…I can open my raw (.dng) into Photoshop as a smart object.  And in PS, I can open the smart object into ACR.  Works fine.  And I can change stuff.  For example, if I change the exposure from -.25 to +.20, it changes perfectly in PS, as I'd expect.  But, I'm still not getting the changes back to the original raw (.dng) file…
There is no reason why the changes made to a Smart Object oject should be refleftef to a totally unrelated file.
    davepinminn wrote:
…Do I need to do something different to get the changes back to the original file…
Yes. you have to go back to that original file and apply the changes directly to it.  In a previous post, Jeff Schewe told you of a shortcut to achieve that:
    Jeff Schewe wrote:
When you are in the Camera Raw SO with ACR open, go to the main flyout menu and select Export settings to XMP. This will write the new image settings from the SO to the xmp metadata. Then in Lightroom, select Read metadata from file in the main Metadata menu. That will bring in all the settings of the raw SO back into Lightroom. So, while not automatic, it's not as bad as writing down the settings and entering them by hand.

  • Extracting an .xmp sidecar from an ACR-edited RAW smart object layer...

Hello all.  Given the following situation:
Several thousand TIFF files, each containing two RAW files embedded into separate Smart Object layers.  The RAW files were named with sequential numbers prior to being composited into the TIFF files via a script, and the TIFF filenames correspond to those of the embedded RAW files.  The RAWs have subsequently been edited in ACR from within the TIFF files.
I've done a little digging, but I can't seem to turn up answers to several related questions:
    A) Should I wish to re-extract the RAW files from the smart object layers with the edits that have been applied, is there a method of PerLayerMetdata that can be used to extract a complete .xmp sidecar that will be recognized by ACR and associated with the exported RAW?
    B) Should I wish to change the sequential-naming of the parent TIFF files, is there any method to correspondingly change the filenames of the embedded RAWs directly within the smart object layer?  In other words, using PerLayerMetdata, can the filenames of the RAWs be changed without exporting the RAWs using a different filename and then replacing the contents of the smart object layer?
    C) I would ultimately like to be able to save the embedded RAWs as DNGs with their ACR edits applied, if necessaray.  Given a way to accomplish A), above, it would be a fairly simple to export the RAWs and associated .xmp files and then run the DNG converter on the lot.  However, does anyone know of a way to save a DNG directly from the smart object layer?
Any ideas or pointers to existing documentation are much appreciated.

Thank you kindly, Michael.  I see now that the example I was viewing had done exactly what you describe, writing ACR settings into the SO layer's metadata at the time of embedding.  I was only looking at the portion which later accessed those settings using PerLayerMetadata, and I had mistakenly assumed that CS5 was automatically embedding xmp data in this manner, now, when opening or placing a RAW file as a SO.
I don't see a direct way to get at the ACR settings of a camera raw file embedded in a smart object.
This is sort of what I was afraid of.  They're in there, somewhere, but I'm having no luck figuring out how to access them.
If the ACR settings for a RAW smart object are, indeed, not exposed to automation in some manner, I think I must change my workflow such that either: A) No edits are performed in ACR after object embedding; or B) the RAWs are converted to DNGs prior to smart-object embedding so that the ACR settings can be exposed in the exported file.

  • Cropping smart object files in PS with ACR

I sent a DNG from LR to PS with the "open as smart object in Photoshop" command and after I cropped it in ACR ... the result is in the following image:
It is not cropping canvas ...
So does this mean that we can not use ACR in PS for cropping smart object files?
    Any idea?
    Thanks ...

I see a display like you show.
For when the it was first opened as a smart object layer it was not cropped. ACR set the new Document canvas size to the image's pixel size  for there was no open document and the transform associated the smart object anchor point is the canvas center and the width an height sizes are both 100%.
If I then double click on the smart icon in the layers palette. ACR open the full RAW image.  If I then use ACR crop tool and say crop a portion or the upper left section of the image. When I click OK.  Photoshop updates the smart object layer object. The rendered pixels are the upper left section. The associated transform is not changed it still has the canvas centered anchor point and a width and height of 100%.  So the layers pixel are moved to the center and the width and height are  still 100%.  The number of pixels in the object is much smaller then canvas size so there are transparent areas on all four sides and the borders on opersid sizes are equal to each other.
If I double click on the smart Icon in the layer palette ACR open and all I see is the cropped area. When I click on ACR crop tool I see the whole image and the crop selection is the upper left section I selected the previous time I reprocessed the smart object layer

  • How open and copy smart object

    Hi,
I read topics about smart objects but i not found solution on my problem.
    1. I need open smart object layer
    2. copy all layers from the smart object to another file
    Thanks

I think you may be better off just copying the smart object layer from the source document into the target document.  There may be several different resolutions involved and other complexities.  Within a smart object layer there is a copy of the original object. So how the smart object layer was created determines what the imbedded object is.  A smart object may be many thing. Could be a copy of a raw file, a copy of a layered file, contain a group of layers created from within the source document. There is a transform associated with smart object layers.  When you open a smart layer into Photoshop so you can edit the embedded smart object it opens at the resolution and size of the object which may be different then the document its  a layer in. The transform is only associated the layer not the object. Once open into Photoshop you can of course dupe the layers into the target document.  It may be a bit complex for some layers may have layer mask and perhaps other layers clipped to it or be within a group then there is the layers visibility state. If you have both the source document and target document open in Photoshop it is easy co copy a layer from the source document to the target document. If the source layer is a smart object the associated transform will also be copied to the target document however it easy re transform the smart object layer in the target document.  In the source document target the smart object layer the use menu Layers>Duplicate Layer... in the Duplicate Layer dialog in the destination section use the pull down menu to select the target document You can use the scriptlistener plugin to capture the action manager code to do that.

  • How to Turn Off "Open As Smart Object" ??

Help ! I am using PS CS3. I opened a JPG file as Camera Raw using "Open As Smart Object" just to see what it was all about. Now, when I use just "Open As" to open a JPG as Camera Raw, at the bottom of the CR dialogue, instead of "Open Image" it continues to say "Open Smart Object" even though I did not specify that I wanted to Open As Smart Object. How do I get back to just Open Image in the CR dialog. I have the latest version - is it me or it a bug ???

Links do not seem to have a high discoverability in a software.
A drop down list would not take much more screen real estate, I wonder why they got scrapped in favor of hyperlinks.

  • As a user of Extract, I would like to have the ability to open/access assets and information contained within smart objects or linked layers. Is this possible?

    Problem:
In Extract ( Extract for PSD ) a user is unable to access assets or information from smart objects or linked layers.
    Usage:
Smart Objects/Linked Layers are useful for templated web workflows
@Sectioning content allows for a holistic view with access to granular information
    Possible Solution(s):
Could we create a link between to cloud files.
Could a smart object or linked layer be expanded on upload
Could we create a drop menu like the layer comps that includes related files

    Hello Martin,
Our current support in Extract for Smart Objects includes showing them in the file, and using them on the backend when you request your layer(s) to be scaled while exporting (i.e., when scaling up, the highest quality image is used).  We also display the colors, fonts and gradients from the included Smart Objects in the Extract Styles panel.
We have considered providing a way to open Smart Objects from within Extract, and could use some feedback from you on how this user experience would work best for you. Would you prefer option a) or b) below, and why?
    a) When opening a Smart Object, it opens in the current browser window, replacing your current view of the PSD.
    b) When opening a Smart Object, it opens in a new browser window, which receives focus (is the frontmost browser tab/window).
Also, if you tried to open a Linked Smart Object when the linked file is not available, what would you expect to happen?
Would you describe in more detail what you mean by: "Could a smart object or linked layer be expanded on upload?" and how you'd use this feature?
    Regards,

  • RE: Camera Raw and Smart Objects

    Hello Everyone.
    I have a question please.
Inside the Camera Raw 8.1, Inside the Workflow Options, I Checked the Box for Open In Photoshop as a Smart Objects.
I noticed Inside the Camera Raw, Open Image box turn to, Open Object box.  I click on open, and It opened the Image as a Smart Objects Inside the Photoshop.
If I make any changes to the Image, and If I Double Click on the Smart Object, It will Open In Camera Raw again which Is good.
I also noticed If I do any changes to the Image Inside the Camera Raw to the Smart Object after clicking on Open Smart Objects I see the changes Inside the Photoshop also.
But If I do any changes to the Image Inside the Photoshop, and later I Double Click on the Image the Image opens Inside the Camera Raw, without any changes.
This Is my question: The Smart Object Image Is still a Raw Image ?
    This Is my next question:
I know If I open a Raw Image Inside the Camera Raw, and If I click on Done, the image is still a Raw Image, which Is good, and If I click on Reset Bottom, It will reset It back. If I only change the White Balance  and Click on  Done and go back to the Camera Raw again, and I choose As Shot, the Image goes back the  Original Raw file.
But If I do other changes such as the exposure, any color change, and click on done I can never go back to the original..
In the past month I been working with the Lightroom, and I noticed if I open a Raw image Inside the Lightroom, and do any changes to that Image,,  any time I can click on the Reset and the Raw image goes back to its original.
I don't think we can do this with Camera Raw can we ?

Clear removes the Camera raw settings completely. You will not see the adjustment icon on the thumbnail in Bridge
Camera Raw Defaults will show the icon and double clicking the thumbnail will always open it in Camera Raw with the Default settings.  The Default is "As Shot", which is why you don't see any difference. It's when you choose a Custom Default that you will. It will stay with the Camera Raw file.
See this article by Julienne Kost.
    http://blogs.adobe.com/jkost/2009/10/setting_new_camera_raw_default.html
Another difference is with Jpegs. Open a Jpeg in ACR, make an adjustment, click "Done".  Select "Camera Raw Defaults" and it will always open in ACR instead of Photoshop.  Select "Clear" and it's a normal jpeg that will once again open in Photoshop.
Basically that's about all I know, I normally don't use ACR much.

  • Vector smart objects still looking for older version of Illustrator

When we try to open smart objects from withing Photoshop CC, they're looking for Illustrator CS6. On machines where Illustrator CS6 is uninstalled we get errors. All the file associations in Bridge are correctly set. Is there a way to change the file associations for smart objects?
    Thanks,
    -Onur

Editing smart objectrs uses the system wide associations, not the ones from Bridge, so you need to adjust that for the *.ai file type.
