ACR 4.6 Making Photoshop CS3 Unusable to get my work done...

In my CS3 Photoshop crash saga, ACR 4.6 has made the problem worse, this makes about the 17th Crash report I sent Adobe:
www.gballard.net/PScrashNov5.zip
This crashed without building a layered master file.
www.gballard.net/PScrashNov2.zip
This crashed 4 layers into building a layered master file.
Pardon my not being able to decode a crash report (or wanting to spend another day Erasing my Apple logo hard drive and reinstalling and retesting -- what Apple recommended even though they said the crash data I sent they said confirmed my OS and hardware were not to blame),
But I can't understand why 17 crash reports that end in the same couple lines don't offer a clue...grr.

>> Neil) anything in particular you do or a particular file or file type on your system that seems to reliably crash your system
The Ps bug seems to be most susceptible to using PREVIOUS CONVERSION on .nef files in ACR, 16-bit aRGB, working on the files in Ps, and building a sized/layered Master .psd file by dragging the opened, worked on .nef files into the layered Master .psd and scaling them to the frame.
For example, I can get a lot farther in this workflow without the crash until I start using PREVIOUS CONVERSION which seems to set something up in ACR about the way ACR and Ps interact that crashes Ps proper when I hit Open Image in ACR (most of the time the image doesn't even actually open in Ps, or it disappears with an Adobe Ps crash report shortly after a couple moves).
The ACR bug I had that Eric fixed in 5.2 had to do with a nasty "hang" (spinning ball working in ACR that required a Force Quit that usually didn't work, or a hard reset to reboot the Mac).
Previous Conversion or building a layered .psd may or may not be a red herring here, but I got onto the theory when building a portrait series Master .psd where all the .nef files had the same exposure and I was using Previous Conversion in ACR and crashing after about every 4-10 files/layers.
Since then it is very easy for me to duplicate the Ps crash reports mixing Previous Conversion into my layered Master .psd work flow.
+++++++
Setting Ps memory to 100% seems to make the problem happen a lot quicker.
I don't need a discussion about setting a 100 percent memory in Ps, since Chris Cox and Jeff Schewe have stated repeatedly Ps tends to run safer at around 75% on machines with even 8gb or more Ram installed I have 10gb and 14gb on my two Mac Pros.

  • Photoshop cs3 crashed while i was working on a file...

photoshop cs3 crashed while i was working on a file. i checked the temp folder and found a file that was modified the day it crashed. there is no extension and when i tried to open it in photoshop it said that it "could not complete my request because the file is in use or left open"... is my file hosed or is there a way to recover it? i was working on it for hours and like a dummy forgot to save it

    Josh,
Someone had posted a link to such a program, as Mike mentioned. It was "supposed" to be able to dissect and restore from PS TMP files. I do not have a link, and also do not know the $, nor how effective this might be. I'd do a search of this forum, trying words like PS TMP, and the like. It was not THAT long ago. Again, have no experience with it (or any other TMP reclamation apps.). Might be worth a try.
All other comments on doing various forms of Save/Save_As are good ones. I'd incorporate those into my workflow, if you have not already.
You might want to look at Stellar-Phoenix for file recovery. Depending on where you were, when the crash happened, you might be able to locate your older
    b image
file on your HDD - or, you might not. Stellar-Phoenix had a trial. Seems that it would scan your HDD, but only the paid version would recover, if found. See if it finds something of use. I'd also do this,
    b before
anything else overwrites that/those sector(s) on your HDD . Probably not going to help, but you never know. Just to be clear, Stellar-Phoenix is a data recovery tool and is NOT a PS TMP file extractor.
Sorry about your misfortune and good luck,
    Hunt

  • Adobe Photoshop CS3 Extended installed but not working

Adobe Photoshop CS3 Extended was added to my computer when I bought it in Thailand.
Now (I am no longer in Thailand) I want to use it but I can't seem to open/do anything.
Even when asking for help with the 'Help' button it states that "There was an error in initializing the Adobe Help application. You may need to re-install the applicaiton and the Help componen".
How do I do this? Or am I missing something?
Thanks in advance for the help!
    Eline

    Haha... I like the honesty!
I was in bad need for a computer and went to one of those fancy, big shopping malls recommended to me by a couple of friends. I didn't even know I had Adobe Photoshop until today. I am not sure I really got screwed or things just work differently. The computer is a little strange... (I can write in Thai สกร่ฟส กส่ฟกส า่ฟส ่ if I would like to) but so far it's ben okay.
Anyways, what would you suggest I do Mylenium?

  • Photoshop CS3 Extended Keyboard Shortcut Not Working

I installed the CS3 Master Collection that included Photoshop CS3 Extended. I've used Photoshop for going on a decade and I find the CTRL+ALT+I keyboard shortcut really handly to pop open the Image Size window.
Now, in this new version (don't after a clean format, reinstall of my XP OS) the shortcut no longer works. I check and it still has CTRL+ALT+I listed next to Image Size in the drop down menu as the proper keys, but it does not work.
    Anyone having this issue?

I tried resetting the preferences but to no avail.
I'm avoiding having to do an uninstall/reinstall like the plague so If I can find what's causing it and fix it manually that would be preferred.
I have thought about running the Adobe updater but I'm concerned that it may cause more problems that it would fix (as this has happed to me before with other apps). Everything else works great and this is the only issue I've noticed.
Does anyone know if the update for Photoshop CS3 Extended addressed his issue (or knows of another cause that might be behind it)?

  • Photoshop CS3 Brush Smoothing does not work

    Hi,
I need help with the brush tool in Photoshop CS3. All the brushes appear to be pixelated, and I'm unable to draw any smooth lines at all. Whatever I draw comes out edgy and rough.
On the other hand, the eraser tool still produces smooth lines. I tried fiddling with brush preferences, but nothing I do helps: I just can't draw smooth lines with the brush tool, although the smoothing option is turned on.
I'd really appreciate your help, since it's been a couple of days since I was able to draw.

Maybe this will help; I couldn't tell for sure from your description.
Go to Brushes > Brush Tip Shape, and at the bottom of that box slide the slider for Spacing to 0.

  • Photoshop CS3 Crop Tool Doesn't Work

Does everyone's crop tool work correctly in PS CS3? Mine doesn't and I wasn't sure if this is a flaw in the software.
    ND

I just ran into a crop problem, too. I've been using the demo CS3 for about 25 days with no serious problems, on a Macbook Pro. I have a file with 2 layers (background and background copy). I tried to crop the image, with the background copy layer highlighted. When I do, the whole screen goes black (as if I have cropped the whole image into nothingness). The tiny thumbnails on the layers don't show an image, but two squares (2 halves of the thumbnail) of faded colors. I opened a completely different image, and tried cropping that, and I get the same result! I double checked and I am not cropping to any weird size or resolution. This seems like a big bug, if it is a bug!

  • I have photoshop cs3, and often get "no disc error in drive -x-" error (optical drive)...

Frequently when I startup my PS CS3 within the startup sequence for the software it pops up the error "No Disc in Drive E:" - which refers to an optical drive on my computer which I very rarely even use. I click "Continue" and it pops up again - sometimes 3 times - after which PS loads perfectly fine.
[Yes, I know it's old software - I work for a not-for-profit, so please indulge my use of old software...]
I double checked my scratch disc settings and they don't refer to the E: drive of course it's not even available as an option, but I figured I'd check anyway.
Any other places / settings I can check to remedy this? Any one else come across this?
As to some background for my usage of PS - I work as a graphics designer and media director in a not-for-profit and work several hours each day with it - so typically it is 'open' in my windows XP system for several days at a time until I see memory / performance hits begin to surface and completely close it to restart later in day. I have 2.33Ghz Dual Core with 2G of Ram. My 'threshold' for considering closing the app is when the Virtual Memory (or Working Set Memory) gets up to 850-900meg.

were you able to get help on this?  I need help on error 5002 as well.  thank you

  • Photoshop CS3: How to Get This "Retro" Effect!

OK, I've been seeing this REALLY awesome retro look on images and am not sure how to do it! Any of you know how? Here is a link to a gallery that shows this type of effect: (you'll have to scroll over to image 3)
    http://www.stephcarson.com/wedding/wedding1/
Go to image number 3 (3/40)
    thank you in advance!

    Hi Jacalyn,
Here's one way (among many) to accomplish the effect in 2 minutes or less.
Work from a COPY of your original.
First, using hue/saturation, reduce the saturation to give a "faded" effect.
Add a new layer; fill that layer with the color of the "tint" you want to
apply. Change the blending mode for that layer to "Color" and adjust the
    opacity to suit.
For the irregular vignette, add another layer and fill it with the dark tone
you want for the vignette. Add a layer mask filled with white. With a very
large, soft brush, paint on the mask with black to allow the center to
    become visible.
When done, flatten & save in whatever format you wish -- or save it with the
layers intact as a PSD if you think you may want to make more changes.
As I said, there are other ways to accomplish this. There are always
multiple ways in Photoshop, but this is quick & dirty.

  • Photoshop CS3 versus Photoshop CS4

    Hi
    I have Lightroom 2.3
    Photoshop CS3
    Mac OS X 10.5.6.
After editing Photo in Lightroom my transfer to CS3 came up with the following message:
"This version of Lightroom may require the Photoshop Camera Raw plug-in version 5.3 for full compatibility.
Camera Raw version 4.6. is the latest version available for Photoshop CS3.  If raw file support for your camera was introduced after Camera aw 4.6., the Photoshop integration features in Lightroom require CS4 and the latest Camera Raw version 5 plug-in.
The version of the Camera Raw plug-in currently installed is 4_6."
Unfortunately I partially read this message. and
Immediately downloaded camera raw 5_3. - Thus was unable to install the newly downloaded camera raw 5_3.  However I installed the camera profiles ( not related to my Nikon D80).
    1.  Should I uninstall the camera profiles?  if so How to?
    2.  Do Photoshop CS3 users have to continue work /edit photos with less up-to date  perhaps lack of Camera Raw developments?
    thank you
    Sue

    priceline wrote:

The highest version of Adobe Camera Raw that will work with CS3 is ACR 4.6, which is incompatible with the raw conversion engine used in Lightroom 2.3.  There is nothing you can do about that other than upgrading to CS4.
The functionality of ACR 5.3 is so far superior to ACR 4.6 that the upgrade to CS4 is a no-brainer.  Really.

If they really got installed, you can locate them and put them in the trash.
    HardDrive/ Library/ Application Support/ Adobe/ Camera Raw/ Camera Profiles/ …
*NOTE: That is your ROOT LEVEL Library, not your User Library,

Yes.  That's why I wrote that the upgrade to CS4 is a no-brainer.

  • Yet another bug in Photoshop CS3: Lab Colour Mode

Using Photoshop CS3 Standard (english) on Windows XP SP2, I cannot switch to Lab colour mode. Or rather, I can, but the image will turn completely black. In the channels palette in Lab mode, there are four channels: L, a, b, and Lab. The three single channels obviously contain the correct data, and I can select each one and the display will show the correct greyscale representations of the L channel, the a channel, and the b channel. But it won't show the colour image of all channels combined, i. e. the Lab image; this will appear simply black instead.
Fortunately, I still have Photoshop CS2 installed. So due to this and numerous other bugs (particularly the §@#!& printing) I am using Bridge 2.1 and ACR 4.1 but not Photoshop CS3. This application is just too buggy to get serious work done :(
    -- Olaf

The exact same thing happened to me just 2 days ago. It was the first time I had ever tried LAB, in any version of PS, and all I got was the black box. I switched to my earlier version (PS7 in this case) and tried it, thinking that maybe my computer wouldn't support it for some reason, since it's several years old. PS7 displayed LAB just fine... I went back to CS3 (I had closed it down completely) and when it restarted - it LAB worked correctly, BUT all my preferences had been reset to default! So, I agree with the previous poster who commented that it may be a preferences thing. You should also check the color management settings in your earlier version & make sure the CS3 has the same settings. I have no idea if that made a difference or not, but I did notice that my CS3 didn't have the same color settings as PS7 did. Try resetting preferences to default, shutting down CS3 and restarting, and then check to see if CS3 will display LAB correctly.

  • Another Bug in Photoshop CS3 or a setting Im missing?

Another Bug in CS3 or a setting Im missing?
    This time in Photoshop.
If I add a solid colour fill layer and pick a Pantone colour from the Colour Libraries I fill it with a Pantone colour and then save the document. When I re-open the document the Pantone Fill layer reverts back to a CMYK setting when I double click on the layer.
I ran a test on CS2 and this definitely doesnt happen in CS2 so why in CS3?
Its a massive problem and in my eyes makes Photoshop CS3 unusable in a professional environment.
Please tell me its a new setting i'm missing and not a bug.

No I don't want to use channels. I want to use a 'Solid Fill Colour' layer. If you click on the little icon at the bottom of the layers palette you get a little menu and at the top of that menu you can select 'Solid Colour'. Then you can select the 'Colour Libraries' tab and apply a Pantone Colour as a Solid Fill layer.
Photoshop definitely DOES support this method because we have been using it here for the last few years, its quite standard practice to work like this before going into channel work or DCS work.
It means you can double click a layer to reveal its intended Pantone colour rather than cmyk match.
As I say it works fine in CS2.
Well it seems its another bug in a very poor update. I just hope CS4 doesn't have the same problems.

  • Photoshop CS3 Program Error

Since upgrading to Leopard I run Photoshop CS3 and I get a programming error message. I say OK and continue working. It also happens when I use the text tool.
    Anyone else? Solutions?

    Hello,
First try emptying your cache in your home directory folder (Home>Library>Caches). Trash everything located in the folder except the folder itself. Quit Photoshop if open and try again.
If that does not work, try deleting the preference file(s) for Photoshop (make sure Photoshop is closed).
If the above did not work at all, then I recommend uninstalling and reinstalling Photoshop CS3.
    I hope this helps!
