ACR 4: Fill Light and Recovery producing halo effect in CS3

When adjusting Fill Light or Recovery in ACR 4, I'm getting an outlining effect in contrasty areas of some images. Happens with both RAW and DNG files.
<br />
<br />This does not manifest itself with any other adjustments.
<br />
<br />Anyone else seeing this? I've included a couple of examples, one with no post processing and one with Fill adjustment only.
<br />
<br />Thanks
<br />

David,
In case you are still monitoring this discussion, I also have experienced these halos whilst using Lightroom to edit Tif files which are both under and overexposed in the same image - that is, they are very contrasty. This experience has been subsequent to the release of both CS3 and Lightroom - which both use the ACR 4 engine, as I understand it. From my observations, the halos result from using a combination of too much Fill and Recovery but seem more influenced by Recovery than Fill. I have thought that this is not unexpected, and is therefore probably not a bug, as there must be a natural limit to how much of an overly contrasty image that you can rescue. I have been able to minimise (but not completely eliminate) the halo effect by judicious use of added Exposure in lieu of some Fill (to recover at least partially some of the underexposed regions) and a reduced amount of Recovery - and just accepting that all the highlights might not be as optimally enhanced as desired. Perhaps the halo effect produced by these wonderful tools may be further reduced in subsequent releases of CS3(ACR4) and Lightroom - a possibility hinted at by Jeff Schewe in his reply to your post.

Photoshop CC camera raw 8.5 where is the fill light and recovery buttons
Hi Teresa, you may have worked this out already? but i just downloaded Photoshop CC and I too used the recovery and fill light buttons and couldnt see them in the raw processing window... HOWEVER!! i did some research and they are available!! YAY, you can toggle between the latest and the older layout... and the recovery and fill optoins ARE  there... the link explains it... but when you open some raw files... on the right you should see a little camera - camera calibration button when you click on there the first drop down PROCESS - change to 2012 mode and then click back to the BASIC processing wheel and they will be there... cheers Danni

I just downloaded lightroom 5.6. Why do I have fill light and recovery but not highlights and shadows?

Your photo is using legacy processing version (2003 or 2010). Click the lightning bolt up near histogram, or use process drop-down at bottom in dev module (right panel, camera cal section) to use current processing version (2012).

  • Visible artifacts caused by Fill Light in Lightroom

With the LR V1.0 I noted in many cases very strange looking highlight-shadow edges. This was very pronounced in same cases, and never appeared with RawShooter in similar situations. After having done some experiments I think that one culprit is the Fill Light algorithm. Please take a look at the following example. Its a quite ordinary 8Mpix Canon CR2 file with an ordinary landscape scene. I soon I use some "fill light" to bring up the shadows on the mountain, strange "band of pixels" appears along the edge of the trees and the sky. RawShooter has a similar Fill Light algorithm, which does not case such side effects.
At first I thought that too strong jpeg compression might be causing this, but that I saw this in the Lightroom screen before any conversion.
I made a few screen dumps from 1:1 view of this image fragments:
    http://www.pbase.com/phototalk_thh/lightroom_strange_artifacts
Have you also encountered such problem?

    Thomas,
Before, I start, I'm going to be entirely objective here. You are having a genuine issue here and I'm approaching from that point completely. You've documented it well, which helps in following it.
Both Fill Light and Highlight recovery use internal masks to work. This means that there has to be an edge somewhere. When dealing with sudden contrast jumps like in your image, then it is possible to get the edge showing. I'm looking at 2 images here on my machine. Both of the same scene. A ruin against a blue sky. One underexposed a lot, the other mildly underexposed. Over 30 of FL gives me an edge like yours on the underexposed image, but not until 60 with the mildly underexposed image. The edge in the first image still looks okay until I start adding Recovery. This is probably because the Masks have the same edge point and are boosting each other, making it look much worse.
FWIW, the Fill Light in Lightroom is not based on any RSP code, so I suspect that a like for like figure comparison is moot, much like comparing F or C scales on a degree by degree basis.
Is there an issue? Not so much on reasonably exposed images, but for underexposed images, I do see an edge when pushing Fill Light in regions of high contrast . It is exacerbated by using Recovery.
It has been mentioned before by me in the past.

  • Fill light presets for PV2012

I don't claim that these will match PV2010 fill light.  What I claim is, these applied after import will provide a fill light - like effect similar in strength to fill light of the same name.  I used to start many of my images with fill light, and these are a way to get to similar starting points faster.
    Fill Light 20
    Exposure 0.27
    Contrast -15
    Highlights -10
    Shadows +10
    Clarity 5
    Saturation 5
    Fill Light 40
    Exposure 0.55
    Contrast -30
    Highlights -20
    Shadows +20
    Clarity 10
    Saturation 10
    Fill Light 60
    Exposure 0.83
    Contrast -50
    Highlights -50
    Shadows +50
    Clarity 20
    Saturation 25
    Fill Light 80
    Exposure 1.1
    Contrast -60
    Highlights -50
    Shadows +50
    Clarity 20
    Saturation 25

Well, whilst it may well be a bug, it still can be used to create some interesting images. Try setting the Black level slider to the same value as Fill light one - this creates an interesting stylized effect. This however does not work on all the images.
Look for Paris photos (colour ones) here http://www.aletan.com - these are examples where Fill light and blacks were both upped to 100.

  • Fill Light algorithm

    Hi all
I find the fill light slider in lightroom and ACR 4 to over increase saturation creating an unpleasing effect...
... of course my monitor is calibrated and I have everything color managed the right way
I also tried dxo optics pro, ***I LIKE LIGHTROOM BEST*** but... their fill light algorithm gives much more natural effect, so please talented adobe engineers... fix this in next releases
    Cheers

    To Wolf and Lee :
-Yes shadow/highlight in photoshop is more powerful and can give the exact result one is looking for with some practice
But lightroom is a standalone program aimed at users that doesn't want to much bother with complicated tweaks, I'm not complaining about, I just find that this particular adjustment doesn't match the quality I was expecting
I tried it with a raw file taken by my s3 pro (wich has 14 bit/channel raw format and much more dynamic range then other DSLRS) and I find dxo optics pro giving more pleasing results right away regarding this particular slider
I think that with all the controls we have in lightroom one will be able to achieve the look he's after, and I'm happy with so many tweaks, I particularly like it smart cropping, TAT, the vibrance slider and the facilitated curves controls are really nice and so far unmatched by any other software I know
But still IMHO fill light slider could me much better, trying this particular function in dxo confirmed what I was thinking

  • Issues with a T61 harddisk, UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME, cannot also get in the Rescue and Recovery

    Dear Lenovo Support Community,
I have a T61 with XP pro on it. This is the history of my harddisk problems with it:
(the harddisk is HDD0 Fujitsu MHW21160BJ G1 and everything in laptop (HW and SW) are same as the factory sold one)
    1. Unfortunately I had not made any recovery cd/dvd when the computer was healthy
    2. Some time ago, after a crash, and during the chkdsk in the following boot up, harddisk showed 12kb bad sector
    3. Due to more crashes and not being able to login once, went to rescue & recovery and only recovered OS to an old and healthy state. Kept my data, lost all the new programs installed but got the OS fine and running. --> I guess the bad thing that may have happened is that recovered OS may have used those bad sectors as well, but this is just a guess.
    4. Problems, slow downs, the 12kb bad sector, issues kept coming back every couple or few weeks. Repeated the rescue and recovery OS installations another two times.
    5. Few days ago, all was good, but needed to restart, but this time a blue screen came up with UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME. This screen comes up even if I try to go into safe mode, with networking, or even with only DOS prompt.
    6. Tried to go to rescue and recovery (version 4), it took a really long time and was telling me that something wrong with the file \minit\setupapi.log and after a long long time that it got in the page for rescue and recovery, it was not doing anything by clicking on any of the buttons.
    7. Took the hard out, connected it through an external enclosure to another computer, the main drive could not be read at all, I/O error, not distinguishable.
    8. But the SERVICE drive was understood and I could even run chkdsk /F F:\ on it and it repaired the file mentioned above (\minit\setupapi.log).
    9. Put the hard back into T61, went to rescue & recovery, this time the error on the file was not showing up, but since the step #8, I have not been able to get pass the initial screen of rescue & recovery. It doesn't go in at all.
    10. Found it through Google search, the famous post on this forum about fixing the Master Boot Record. Got the little program, burned on a CD, went through all of its steps, finished as described in the famous thread, but I am not sure if it has been any help to me so far.
    11. In few other occasions, connected the hard through the external enclosure to another computer and found online and used programs like Disk Doctors Windows Recovery Data and EASEUS Data Recovery Wizard and was able to just read inside both NTFS main disk and FAT32 service disk (windows can also read the service disk but cannot read the main disk). Using the free version of EASEUS, I could even read and save my personal data since my last backup, so I am good to even format the T61 hard but still I don't want to give up on that.
    12. While the lenovo harddisk is in it, in a restart went to BIOS (F1) and ran the harddisk diagnosis, It said: "Pass: Controller Diag, Error code 0000: Read verification failed". And after the "Test complete", it gave a red message in the middle of screen that "<<< An error was found. Call for service >>>"
    13. As mentioned in #1, I don't have Lenovo's recovery Windows XP CD(s) for T61, but I have some other windows xp installation CD's, I thought I can put them in CD drive, boot up from CD, and try to recover or repair the windows, It seems that they tell me there is no harddisk in your computer!! When I press "R" to go to recovery console, it tells me: "Setup did not find any hard drives installed in your computer."
My questions for dear members of this forum are:
    1. Can I recover my T61 harddisk with the above description? It is being read nicely with the recovery programs, so it should have not been damaged seriously. Please guide me to other things that I can try?
    2. I can see and read the Service part of the drive from Windows (no recovery program needed) while connecting the drive through external enclosure to another computer. Can I run a program from the Service part of disk and make those T61 Recovery CD and DVD?
    3. If I purchase the Recovery CD(s) from Lenovo, would they be doing any magic or help in my case described above?
    4. Can I make recovery CD(s) from another T61 laptop and use them for mine?
Thanks all for reading my long post and helping me. God Bless.
    Best Regards,
    AL_K

    Step One: Install windows
    Step Two: run system update
Step Three: Your done (optionally have a beer and relax)
Sorry, step three was a bit of humor I added.
Actually these recovery CDs were produced before the first T61 was made, probably in 2006. The T61 line was replaced in 2008.
You can activate with the code on your COA, I've done it many times, just make sure you do a full (new) installation, not an upgrade, from an oem disc.
If you do end up using the original product recovery disc set, your steps are more like this...
    1. Install disc one...   wait 30-60mins
    2. Install disc two...   wait 30-60mins
    3. Install disc three...  wait 30-60mins
    4. Install disc four...   wait 30-60mins
    5. Install disc five...  wait 30-60mins
    6. Install disc six...   wait 30-60mins
    7. Install disc seven...   wait 30-60mins
    8. Install disc eight...  wait 30-60mins
    9. download latest service pack for windows and install (over an hour)
    10. Install (replace old version)  system update and run.
    11. go to windows update and update several years worth of patches and hotfixes. (1-4 hours)
    12. kick back and have a warm beer and cold pizza, if there is any left after I finished hours ago and celibrated already.
Also, after going through all that, you've not only installed windows, then replaced nearly the entire operating system, but you've also used valuable harddisc space to make several redundant copies of the outdated files, drivers and apps.
Please understand, I'm not saying the recovery discs are a bad design, they work great, and back in 2006-7-8-9 I'd happily go through all that work, but today all the stuff on them is to old so it's futile to go through all that. It would be really nice if Lenovo updated the install discs, and we could download the latest version to use, but they basically just leave them untouched after the model line is released, so nothing on that disc is newer then about 2006.
I'll also add that both George and I have done this well over 100 times each, so we wouldn't be suggesting this if it wasn't the best option, but in the end you'll have a working system no matter which route you take to get there, so the only question to ask yourself is...
Do you like your beer cold and your pizza hot
Good luck, and enjoy your endeavours

  • Rescue and Recovery Won't Open on My R61i Laptop

Computer: 2008 Lenovo R61i Laptop with Windows XP, SP 3, 2 GB RAM, Intel Duo Core processor, 34 GB free on the hard drive
I had been wondering why my 160 GB hard drive was filling up even though I only have 10 GB of documents, photos, and videos saved, so I downloaded a little program called windirstat, and it told me that 50 GB was being used for RRbackups. Google told me what that is, and I opened it and checked to see how many backups were there (it said 5, counting an initial "basic" backup). I attempted to delete the newest one, but I can't tell if the process finished, and now I can't get Rescue and Recover to even open. I have defragged my hard drive, I have tried it in SAFE MODE, nothing works.
Here are my questions and additional info:
Is the initial "basic" backup where the backup of  the Windows XP operating system is located? (I'm guessing that if the answer is "yes," then I don't want to delete that backup.) The size of this backup is 36 GB.
If so, could that backup be moved to an external hard drive and still be usable?
I also have Go Back (keeps a compressed image of my hard drive on the same drive for restoration of files and reverting the hard drive to a previous status). I have used this program for years and would rather use it that Rescue and Recovery for incremental backups because it's automatic and updates more often.
I also now use Carbonite, so I may need to rethink how I should use R & R and GoBack.
I'm thinking that I would like to keep the R&R initial back for Windows files but tell R&R to not to any more backups, then continue to use GoBack and Carbonite.
The primary problem at the moment is that R&R won't open at all, so I can't delete any backups and I can't tell it to stop trying to do incremental backups. HELP!
    Thanks in advance,
    Jim King

    Hi,
can you please describe, how did you tried to delete the RnR backup? Using GUI, or manually in the RRbackups?
NOTE: The files stored in the RRbackup are encrypted and each file has also a metadata file, that conatins the informations on the purpose of that one file and some other usefull informations for RnR so that the restore can work.
Here are the answers on your questions:
    1) If I understand it correctly, then the answer is YES. In case you have placed all the RnR backups localy, then the basic/initial backup and also the other incremental backups are stored exactly in the RRbackups folder.
    2) YES, you can move it, BUT not manually. You need to use the RnR GUI to copy/move the backup on a network drive, or USB HDD. You can read more about this option in the Manual for RnR (sorry I don't want to describe it in here, as this is a bit longer description). So please review following guide:
    http://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/pc/pccbbs/thinkvantage_en/rnr43dg.pdf
Page 61 describes this process using the rrcmd.exe utility.
    3) I think, this is just a note
    4) same here
    5) In this case, it's of course possible to keeep just the original/inicial backup. In case you don't want to do any other backups, then you just make sure, that you dissable the scheduler of RnR and don't do any other backups.
    6) For this situation, the crucial point is, what did you deleted in the RRbackups. However, the first point, that I would do is to reinstall, or repair RnR. NOTE: Please use the same package, or the package, that is stored on your system. From Add/REmove programs.
Please let me know, if you have any add questions to this situation.
    Cheers

  • Rescue and Recovery's disk management is pathetic and senseless, please help.

I'm using an X61 (which i've been very happy with, by the way, not that this is relevant) which has Rescue and Recovery installed by default. This is okay, as I see the value of regular backups. However, the default setting is to keep a history of 5 of the last backups. Each backup consumes ~10gb of space for a total of about ~50gb if I let the program run as it came configured, which is totally unacceptable for a machine that has 100gb of storage. That's my first complaint.
Second, I've attempted to neuter the R&R's idiotic disk usage behavior by reducing its maximum number of incremental backups. Oh, trouble. The program will not allow me to have any less than *3* incremental backups, for about ~30gb disk usage. Why does this program insist on dictating how many backups I choose to keep on hand? Ridiculous. I think 2 incremental backups would be reasonable, but R&R will not allow this.
Third, I have also attempted to repair the situation by deleting old and unnecessary backups. Oh, trouble again. Upon attempting to delete some of these backups to *free up space*, it notifies me that it cant, because it *lacks available space* (!!!!).
Whoever designed this program's behavior should start thinking about a career change, imho. Or perhaps I am at fault and it is merely my ignorance that is preventing me from using this application properly. I do hope it's the latter, as I typically have great faith in anything produced by IBM/Lenovo... but this just has me extremely frustrated. Please send any words of advice, I thank you all in advance.

I do not have an answer to this, but if you can tell me where I can go to actually attempt to delete the "backup" that R&R *did* create on my local drive, I would be most appreciative.  I had never used it (R&R) before (and I have used TP's going back *a long* time!) so I assumed when I tried it the first time that it would ask me where to put the backup, e.g. on the network, external drive, &c.  Instead, it started backing up *everything* to my local drive.  While it was running, I had to close the Tablet, which apparently did not make R&R happy.
Bottom line: my 100GB HD is already down to 25GB free (and it is only a month old), the "backup" apparently did not complete successfully so R&R will not recognize it to delete it.  So, I have a worthless backup taking up a ton o' space and I cannot find it to delete it.  HELP!!!  Next time, I will know to have R&R set up *before* running it to back up to the network. (or, based upon the original post to this thread, I may just manually back up my data or save all my important stuff on the network to begin with and let the sysadmin guys worry about backups!)
If anyone even knows what the name of the backup file(s) is/are, that would be a start.

  • Camera Raw 4.0 Fill Light Slider Not Working

    Hi,
Just installed Photoshop CS3, and I'm having an annoying problem.
When using Camera Raw 4.0, all the sliders work smootly except for the Filli Light slider. Its the only slider that is almost impossible to adjust via dragging the slider via my mouse. Of course, this is probably my most frequently used adjustment.
The Photoshop CS3 was a clean install, directly from the CD provided by Adobe.
There was never any Beta version installed.
Sure hope that you can help.
    Thanks,
    Ira

The Fill Light adjustment is the single most processor intensive of all the controls in Lightroom. When you first move the slider it causes Camera Raw to generate a large blur copy of the image and that takes a bit if time. During that initial bit if time, fill Light will NOT be as responsive as the other controls in Lightroom...it only takes a moment but if you are trying to make adjustments while CR is building the mask, you'll get jittery results. The key to using it is to move the adjustment off zero, pause a bit while the mask is being generated and then start fine tuning the adjustment. After that initial move off zero is done, it should be about as fast as most of the other controls-and no, you DON'T want CR to auto-generate the mask for every image by default, it would make Camera Raw much slower overall.

  • Urgent - Rescue and Recovery application affects CHKDSK function

I hope this is the correct Forum/spot to post this:
I have an IBM ThinkPad T23 with MS XP and SP2, with 640,MB of RAM.
Previously, when I had ThinkVantage Rescue and Recovery application  loaded, I soon discovered it effected CHKDSK function, and would produce the following message during power up or Restart whenever I set CHKDSK to run:
     Quote:
    Checking File System on C:
The Type of File System is NTFS
Cannot open Volume for Direct Access
Windows has finished checking the disk...
     End of Quote.
when in reality, no check disk has been performed by Windows.
Consequently, to avoid serious system problems, I had to uninstall ThinkVantage Rescue and Recovery application.  Immediately, CHKDSK function worked perfectly, which helped to prevent system errors and crashes previously occurring.
Hoping that by now, the bugs/problems with this application would have been fixed, I've reinstalled the application (V4.0) and upon testing, found I've immediately again lost the CHKDSK function.
To avoid problems, I'm going to have to again uninstall ThinkVantage Rescue and Recovery application unless there is a patch/fix for this problem that I'm not aware of...if such a fix/patch exists, can someone direct me to it?
Thanks in advance for any guidance/assistance on this anomoly!

Based on Nick’s recommendation I used the Hitachi Data Fitness Test 4.13 to erase all of the file on the hard drive.  The details of the installation are below:
    1.    Download the Hitachi Data Fitness Test 4.13 from http://www.hitachigst.com/hdd/support/download.htm (file dft32_v413_b00.iso) to another computer and created a bootable DVD using cdburn d: dft32_v413_b00.iso from the directory I downloaded it to.
    2.    I started the T61 and put the Hitachi Data Fitness Test DVD in the DVD drive and turned off the T61 and restarted the T61.  Note, the boot priority in the BIOS was set to ATAPI CD0:MATSHIAVDV-RAM.
    3.    I ran both the Hitachi Data Fitness Test Quick Test and the Advanced Test.  The drive past both.  The I ran the Erase Disk.  These took several hours to complete.
    4.    After theErase Disk was complete, I rejected the Hitachi Data Fitness Test DVD and loaded the Rescue and Recovery CD from Lenovo () and restarted the system.
    5.    ThinkVantage Rescue and Recovery loaded and I selected “Restore” and then “Restore my hard drive to the orginal factory state”  [Next]  then “I do not want to save any files.”  [Next], [Next], and following the loading of the Rescue and Recovery Supplement CD, and six Product Recovery CD for ThinkPad T61, R61 Type 6480, 7659, 7658, 7660, 7661, 6378, 6379, 6481, 7663, 7662, 7664, 7665, 6337, 1959) and finally Rescue and Recovery Supplement CD again.
Note there was a several minute wait after inserting the Rescue and Recovery Supplement CD for the second time and a system restart, for the Product Recovery to begin processing files.
    6.    During the Window creation, I cancelled the use Login for the Administrator’s password.
    I back up and running!

  • What happened to fill light in Camera Raw 7? I miss it.

Fill light seems to be missing in Camera Raw 7...how to substitute for it?

If you really, really want it back you can force the conversion to use process 2010.
But try Trevor's suggestion, and especially try taking the time to unlearn the old way and get used to using all the new controls.  I'm finding it easier to get good results more quickly with the new setup.

  • How to manage Rescue and Recovery Backups

Hi I've been using disk image backup solutions since the days of powerquests Drive Image. And have had my days with Ghost and Acronis Trueimage. I recently built a clean Vista image on my T400, and I'd like to take advantage of the Lenovo Rescue and Recovery 4.21 tool since it the recovery technology is already part of my system and I have tested it once.
I'm used to the idea that a backup tool will produce an image file, which I can manage myself, moving to various media....hiding under my bed etc. With RnR, I've noticed it prefers to control the directory's where backups are placed (this is a bit annoying to me, but I can live with it, as long as it's isolated to the RRBackup directory - which it appears may not be the case). I do appreciate it's ability to specify various backup media locations (network, CD, 2nd HDD, USB) and recognize that it's a simple approach for basic usage.
Recently I've backed up my image to USB drive, and also to the local disk. I'd like to take that back up and split it up into DVD's and burn it to disk. I know there is a built in RnR feature which lets us copy backups from the local drive (why only local drive ??) to USB/Network/CD, but unfortunately the CD copy feature burns directly to my thinkpad burner...which is a CDR device, not a DVDR device. I'd like to use the DVDR device on my desktop...
Anyway, I'd like to know if there is more resources on how to manage RnR Backups. I found the following guide http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/MIGR-70344.html (which is hard to get on Lenovo's site...google finds it better), I'm still reading it, but so far it appears more focused on the pre-desktop area than backup management.
    Any insight would be appreciated.
    Thanks!

    Hi Danielle,
Consider this allegory; factory settings will make your thinkpad like a never driven 0 meter car [with reference to software]. Hence it will be far-flung from it's previous state. Apart from what you have already saved on memory stick, all settings and the software you have installed on the notebook will be lost.
    I hope this helps.

  • Rescue and Recovery 4.52 - Makes Full Image Backups?

So, this may seem like a simple question to some, but I can not find a conclusive answer yet.
I have Lenovo's Rescue and Recovery 4.52 - Windows 7 (64 bit) for my Lenovo T540.  Will Rescue and Recovery 4.52 create a full image backup such that if in the event my hard drive crashes, I can reinstall the entire operating system, programs, etc at one time, without having to reinstall individual software programs?
I just don't want to install Rescue and Recovery 4.52 because it is a large program, without it being able to do a full image backup.
    Thanks

In my personal opinion, Rescue and Recovery is obselete.  For Win7 and later, my advice is to use Windows built-in backup and restore.  You can create both a complete system image (what you are asking about), and also backup individual files/folders in your libraries.

Rescue and Recovery was great for XP and earlier OS when there wasn't any built-in backup and restore functions.  But for Win7 and later, my advice is to use the OS built-in feature.  Hope this helps.

  • Is there any slider in Aperture that equates to "fill light" in Light Room

is there any slider in Aperture that equates to "fill light" in Lightroom?   thank u, joanlvh

I always have to chuckle at this question. Aperture introduced a much, much more sophisticated tool, Highlights and Shadows, in Aperture 2, if not 1.5. Now that Lightroom has finally caught up, everyone thinks that it is something new.

Bottom line, Highlights and Shadows can do much more than "Fill Light." And, in any case, Lightroom 4 dropped "Fill Light" for ... "Highlights and Shadows."
If you want a brute force "Fill Light", try some of these:
    -- "Brightness"
    -- Brushing Dodge and Burn
    Enjoy!
