ACR 5.5 & CS3 & Lightroom 2.5

A couple of questions:
1) It states that ACR 5.5 requires CS4, is there a way to get it to install / run in CS3? Sometimes what is stated is not always the final fact.
I'm looking at installing LightRoom 2.5 (can't use LR3 on a G5 PPC) and the notes talk about how it links with ACR 5.5
2) I'm using CS3 on a G5 dual PPC and want to install LR2.5. Are there any issues that I should be aware of because I'm using CS3 with ACR4.6
thanks everyone....

The last version of ACR that will work with Photoshop CS3 is version 4.6.  No, you can not get ACR 5.5 to work with Photoshop CS3.  As far as Lightroom goes, you want to install Lightroom 2.7.  That was the last version in the 2.x series, and will have the most up to date features and will support the most cameras.  Lightroom 2.5 specifically indicates that it is compatible with ACR 5.5 because the version numbers of Lightroom and ACR generally are synchronized.
There shouldn't be any problems using Photoshop CS3 and Lightroom 2.7.  I still use Photoshop CS3 with Lightroom 3.3, and I don't have any problems, although I'm using Windows XP.  Occasionally, when I'm sending files to Photoshop, I'll get a reminder that Photoshop CS3 will not be able to read some of the Lightroom adjustments.  But that's okay, because I render TIF files that contain all of the Lightroom adjustments, and that is what I send to Photoshop.
If you need support for newer cameras, you can always download the newest DNG converter and create DNG (Digital negative) copies of your raw images.  Lightroom will then be able to edit those DNG files.

  • Are PS CS6 / ACR 7 compatible with Lightroom 3?

    Hi,
If I launch PS CS6 from Lightroom 3.x will ACR 7 recognize that the RAW file has been handled by LR 3 and behave accordingly ? I guess that ACR 7 doesn't have a dual mode (2010 vs. 2012 process) ?

If you use DNG to move from ACR Process 2012 to Lightroom 3.6, then LR 3.6 will not understand the edits. You must edit in Process 2012 and then save as a rendered format such as TIFF or JPG for Lightroom 3.6 to understand the edits.

  • Cautionary note re ACR 4.4 and Lightroom 1.4

On the Adobe blogs, Tim Hogarty writes that ACR 4.4 and Lightroom 1.4 are being taken down:
    http://blogs.adobe.com/lightroomjournal/2008/03/important_lightroom_14_and_cam.html

    Try reading the blog...
    >The Lightroom 1.4 update for Mac and Windows has been temporarily removed from the Adobe.com web site....
    >....For those not in immediate need of the updated camera support available in Camera Raw 4.4 or the DNG 4.4 Converter, it's recommended that you also continue working with the 4.3.1 versions.
There is nothing about ACR or DNG 4.4 being removed.

  • Latest ACR version for CS3?

I have CS3 and ACRv4.6 which does not recognize Panasonic Lumix LX3 raw files.
What is the latest ACR version for CS3 and where can I download it from?
    Thanks.

Version 4.6 is the last update for Photoshop CS3. You will need to either download the free DNG Converter version 5.4 (or the beta 5.5) and convert the raw file to DNG or update to Photoshop CS4. If you go the DNG route, even versions of Camera Raw as far back as 2.4 in Photoshop CS will be able to read the converted files.

  • ACR 4.1 Issue - Lightroom Issue with Nikon D40x Raw Files

I am running Windows Vista and CS3 and am trying to process Nikon D40x raw files (NEFs) using ACR 4.1. The images come up properly in Bridge. However, when I try to add metadata using a metadata template, I get the error: "There was an error writing metadata to DSC_130.NEF." When I try to rotate an image in Bridge, I get the same error. If I try to do a Batch Rename, the name does not change. If I double-click on the image, it opens properly in ACR and the image can be rotated in ACR, and it then appears rotated in Bridge.
I also tried importing the D40x images in Lightroom. The following error appeared: "Problem Importing Files. The following files were not imported. The files appear to be unsupported or damaged."

    Jeff,
    I installed camera raw.8bi (size is 10,187kb)in
    c:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Plug-Ins\CS3\File Formats
I'm beginning to think this is a Windows Vista issue. I just installed ACR 4.1 on my XP laptop and it works fine. For both the Vista machine and the laptop, my raw files are on an external drive. If I move the raw files on the Vista machine from the external drive to the c: drive, there is no problem. I'm exploring whether there is some permissions issue in Vista that is not allowing me to write to the raw files if they are on an external drive. Ain't new operating systems just great fun!
    Thanks!

  • New camera profile not "appearing" in ACR, but does in Lightroom

I recently created a camera profile for a Nikon D200, using an X-Rite Colorchecker chart photo and the Chart feature in the DNG Editor.  I exported the camera profile.  When I go to the Calibration tab in ACR 5.5, the new profile does not appear in the drop down list with the other camera profiles.  However, when I go to the Develop module in Lightroom 2.5, the new profile does appear in the drop down list there.
I am running Windows 7.  Snooping around my root drive I find that if I look within the Users\User Name\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\CameraRaw\CameraProfiles directory (referenced in the Fraser and Schewe CS4 Camera Raw book as the Vista location for the profiles) I can find no camera profiles and when I place the new profile there it still does not appear in ACR.  When I look in ProgramData\Adobe\CameraRaw\CameraProfiles\Camera\Nikon D200    directory I can see the regular set of camera profiles for the camera, as well as the one I created, but as I previously stated, the newly created profile does not appear in the ACR list.
A side note - I did some experimentation with camera profile names.  I added "XX" to the end of the Nikon Vivid profile name (not the extension), and then that profile no longer appears in the ACR list of profiles.  I removed the extra letters and then the profile reappears in the ACR list of profiles.  Seemed odd behavior to me.  I also noticed that the profile I created with DNG Editor is noticeably smaller than the others provided by Adobe (28K compared to 110k).
Hope someone has a suggestion for me.

Your reminder about both Photoshop (main) and Bridge needing to be shut down for changes to take effect reminded me that I had Bridge set to "auto-start at log-in".  So I checked and it was still running (shown with the other hidden icons).  When I "shut it down" from the UI I had thought it was fully terminated.  So I completely shut Bridge down, restarted, and the new profile now appears.
Thanks for the reminder/pointer in the right direction.

  • Help - Canon Mark IV CR2's won't open in ACR from Bridge CS3

Hello, I have CS3 - Bridge version 2.1.1.9 and I've uploaded 200 RAW images that show up blank.  The files show 21 mb and as a .CR2, show up in the camera, however, no previews in Bridge.
Do I need a newer version of Bridge and ACR?
    Thanks,
    Captain

I did see, as I was researching my response, that there's only one model that has reached Mark IV stage so far, so my question wasn't completely necessary.  I have been anticipating a 5D Mark IV at some point to counter Nikon's latest offerings.
    -Noel
You may need to wait a while since the 5D Mk III is baely out of the starting gate.
The reviews seem to all say that the 5D Mk III is blowing the competition out of the water.  I an't verify that since I use a 7D.
BTW, I would recommend upgrading to CS6 as opposed to using DNG converter.  The new features such as the automatic CA correction, lens corrections, and better noise reduction make it worth upgrading.

  • Lightroom 2 - Photoshop CS3 - Lightroom 2

    Here's my scenario.
All RAW files have been converted to DNG.
I would like to catalog all DNG files in Lightroom (thus, starting my workflow there). If I shoot an ISO 1600/3200 shot, I would first like to run it through Noise Ninja in Photoshop CS3. So I right click on the Image, Edit in Photoshop CS3 (I have both Edit and Open as Smart Object as choices - unsure which is the right one to use). I can want to run Noise Ninja over the image to remove some noise, and then return back to Lightroom (WITH that change) for further editing. Creating new files (like a PSD) to accomplish this isn't a big deal.
I just don't know how to do it! The image in Lightroom after running Noise Ninja still shows noise.
I've tried the above, saved the PSD, but Lightroom appears to ignore it. Does it matter what the file is called? Does it matter where it's located? How do I tell Lightroom to acknowledge the change?
Any help (step by step) is appreciated.
    -Craig

I figured out how to create an action, make it a droplet, which creates an exe, and reference it via Lightroom. Now I can Export in Lightroom, run the "noiseninja.exe" droplet (needed to make it "run as administrator" in Vista), and have a .psd auto-imported into Lightroom's catalog. Works pretty well (and fast).
I end up with two versions of the same image - one the original .dng, the other a .psd. Which I understand the reasoning for.
Here is what I don't understand:
When I use Export, the .psd is named the same as the .dng file (CRW_2593.dng is imported as CRW_2593.png for example). If I then go ahead and "Delete from Disk" the CRW_2593.png file, both the .png AND.dng files get deleted! These files are not stacked, one only was selected, etc. This doesn't seem right (as I lose the .dng file by deleting the newly generated .png).
Here's something a bit interesting. If I go ahead and "Edit in" the .dng file (after restoring it from a backup), and use the same droplet (set up via Preferences/External Editing), I will also get a .png automatically added to the Lightroom catalog, though it's name is a little different (CRW_2495-Edit.png in this example). I'm presented with a dialog box before conversion which forces me to "Edit a Copy with Lightroom Adjustments". If I go ahead and "Delete from Disk" the CRW_2493-Edit.png, the original .dng stays! I assume that the "Edit a Copy..." above makes it this way.
Is there a way to make the "Export" function behave the same (with regards to the "Delete from Disk" feature) as the "Edit in" function? I've been through the screens for Droplet and Export a dozen times and don't see any setting that refers to the .dng and .png being linked.
    Thanks,
    -Craig

  • Camera Profiles Missing from Lightroom and ACR since upgrade to Lightroom CC

I upgraded to the latest version of Lightroom yesterday. I have discovered since then that the only profile available in the Camera Calibration profiles pop-up menu is Adobe Standard. This applies to Lightroom CC, Lightroom 5 and ACR. Furthermore the folder where the profles were stored is missing. This is a problem as I have lost a custom profile for editing the white balance in infrared photographs. What is the likelycause of this situation and how can it be remedied?

    Hi Beat,
thank you very much for your reply! :-)
That is what I find so  puzzling - there are hundreds of profiles in that folder under a "1.0" subfolder...
And yes, I'm sure it's RAW I'm looking at (and the error message appears before I see Lightroom, so it's not about RAW/JPG).
While fiddling some more I found out, that if I start Lightroom as an Administrator, everything is back to normal, but I never had to do this before and I don't see why this should be the case. What would cause such a behaviour to appear suddenly?
    Rant:
The whole UAC idea - as Microsoft implemented it - is a major pain, but so far I was willing to bear the burden for the supposed raised security, but more and more I tend to think about switching it off as I did under Windows Vista. If it interferes with my ability to get anything useful done it's not worth it (and I have other software that doesn't like it, not just - suddenly - Lightroom).
Thanks for any hints what this problem could be about!
    Cheers,
    Thomas Helzle

  • Configuring a MacPro for Photoshop CS3/Lightroom/CS3 Suite usage

After hearing that Leopard is delayed for a few more months, I've decided to go ahead and buy a MacPro now instead of waiting any longer (was going to hold out until after the WWDC in June). There are a couple of important details that I'm unsure about, and wonder if anyone here offer any wisdom about them.
Right now I'm looking at the quad 2.66GHz MacPro. I'm uncertain about how much RAM to add, as I work with large Photoshop files (up to 1GB in size), and will typically have Photoshop CS3 and other CS3 apps running along side of Lightroom, etc. at the same time. How much memory will Photoshop CS3 be able to really utilize, and how much additional memory would the other applications need on top of that? I'm guessing 4-6 GB of RAM total, but would there be any advantage to having more RAM? I'm also unsure about which video card would be sufficient, e.g whether the Radeon X1900 XT is worth it versus the stock GeForce 7300 GT if I don't plan to use Aperture or two 30" monitors? I don't know how the new Adobe apps will respond to more GPU horsepower if at all.
Any comments would be greatly appreciated.
Dual MDD PowerMac 1GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.9)   2GB RAM, lots of storage internal and external

How much memory will Photoshop CS3 be able to really utilize, and how much additional memory would the other applications need on top of that?
Presuming Photoshop CS3 utilizes system memory for caching in the same way that CS2 does then the answer is all of it. It's actually quite clever. For instance, if you have 6GB system memory and 3GB allocated specifically to PS, if PS needs more than that 3GB then it'll ask the Mac OS X memory manager to handle the caching. Mac OS X being as clever as it is will do as best it can and if it's available as RAM it'll provide that.
I'm guessing 4-6 GB of RAM total, but would there be any advantage to having more RAM?
That'll depend on how many applications and processes you like to be running at once. For Photoshop it's fine. I would probably suggest starting with 5GB (4 x 1GB + factory 2 x 512MB) and see how you go.
I'm also unsure about which video card would be sufficient, e.g whether the Radeon X1900 XT is worth it versus the stock GeForce 7300 GT if I don't plan to use Aperture or two 30" monitors?
Currently the Adobe CS3 design (as opposed to the video) applications don't make specific use of the GPU. That does not mean it'll stay like that, especially given Adobe has public said they are looking into doing so (whether it pans out is another matter). You might want to consider it as a "future proofing" although I don't believe it's necessary as of today and CS3.

  • Optimal Workflow with CS3, Lightroom and iPhoto

I am using Lightroom and CS3 for my initial workflow, adding keyword tags, ratings and flags to my photos in LR. I would like to be able to work with these photos in LR and CS3 and transfer/copy the best of them into a "iPhoto" directory and import them into iPhoto with the CS3 work, meta data and keywords intact so I don't have to go through these changes again in iPhoto. I prefer CS3 for doing the work, but like the emailing, slideshow and iBook capabilities of iPhoto.
    Thanks in advance,
    Kevin

Few people use both Lightroom and iPhoto - they both do essentially the same thing but are different and in the past iPhoto has found LR processed photos unacceptable - and they can not operate on the same physical photos - you must export photos form LR and import them into iPhoto since they both manage photos
If you want to use both you will have to have photos imported into each
Fortunately external hard drives are cheap -- iPhoto is perfectly happy having its library on an EHD

  • Change in Luminance from ACR to PS CS3

I have a series of images, all the same BW image with different tints applied. I used Tiffen DFX filters to do this. When I view the TIF files in Bridge or ACR they are very high in luminance, as though I were viewing them as slides on a light table, but when they get to PS they are much darker, as though I were viewing a slide by holding it up to a window. Why ??? I don't get this one at all. The embedded working space is Adobe RGB while my PS working space is ProPhotoRGB. It doesn't matter whether I convert working spaces or not, the change in luminance is the same. I don't get this one. I haven't seen it happen before. Is DFX perhaps doing something to cause this ?

  • Lightroom vs. ACR slider response

I have been having this issue ever since installing Lightroom last year but have been living with it. When I move any of the adjustment sliders to correct an image, the image seems to flicker or alias slightly while the slider is in motion then stops when I stop moving the slider. It isn't so bad that I can't work on my pictures but I never have this happen when using CS3's ACR. With CS3 the movement of the slider produces a nice smooth transition as I adjust it. Does anyone else have experience with this or know what might be happening? It does get annoying after a while, if I'm working on a lot of images, and I find I end up going over to CS3 ACR to work on them. Any advice would be great. As an FYI I'm using a pretty high end machine with tons of RAM so I have ruled that out.

Maybe the proper question to ask here is: IF it is supposed to be a performance enhancer...HOW is it supposed to work to enhance performance? 'cause nobody with a system that is attainable to mere mortals* sees a performance enhancement from it!
    * When I say this I mean a system with 2-4 cores and 2-4 gig of ram. This is all now "some what" affordable. So please don't tell me that it enhances performance on a 3ghz octo-core with 12 gig of ram. This systems specs are unreasonable. ( I also understand the 8 cores and gobbs of ram Will be More affordable in about 1.5-2 years- but not now)

  • Can Photoshop CS3 be used with files from Lightroom 5?

I have Photoshop CS3 and I am considering buying Lightroom 5. Does anyone know if output from Lightroom 5 can be processed in Photoshop CS3?

The process engine in LR 5 is equivalent to ACR 8.1(Process version 2012) in PS CS 6 or PS CC.
So if you are using LR 5 you have the equivalent of the latest version of ACR, do all the processing of your raw files with Lightroom. When you are ready to make other advanced editing functions in PS CS3 you use the "edit in function" and a tiff or psd file is rendered by LR and sent to Photoshop.
The only disadvantage is that you cannot use the "edit in function" to make ACR in PS CS3 render the raw file with LIghtroom adjustments, since it is just not capable of reading the full adjustments from LR 5.
PS CS3 uses ACR 4.x (Process version 2003)
This is why you have to use LR to create the tiff/psd file for use in PS CS. In the final analysis when you have completed your work in PS CS you still are left with an additional file tiff/psd.

  • CS3 Mac can't get ACR working since Sno Leopard

Since upgrading to Snow Leopard I had a range of problems.
I fixed them for a bit; re loading CS3, updating CS3, ACR etc
But then after I cropped  files I was getting error messages saying to install a printer (despite the Epson R288 working fine)
So I tried re loading (after deactivating) and now I am going in circles trying to find the right ACR and DNG reader working.
So; where are ACR updates for CS3 hid (CS4 is easy to find)
    WHere does DNG converter reside
    Thanks

Yeah I think I had gone down that path which when you select camera raw Macintosh and you end up with Ver 5.5 for ACR and ditto for DNG converter; but these turn out to be for CS4 if you go down on the download page and see the system requirements.
So I gave them another go, and found they don't work as it is the wrong PS version (CS3 not the CS4 these 5.5's are looking for)
So went and put the version 4.6 ACR for CS3 in and so far so good.
Thanks though, but Adobe have to confuse things by numbering ACR's in a cofused manner
