ACR 8.1 in Photoshop CS6 is terribly slow

I just installed ACR 8.1 into Photoshop CS6 and it is terribly slow. I’m working on an 8-core Mac Pro with 10GB of RAM, but even if I have one single file open (Nikon D800 NEF), simple actions like zoom in or out or show/hide masks only occur after a two seconds (or more) lag. Scrolling through the image isn't smooth, it jumps up and down like crazy and spinning beachballs appear.
I tried to reinstall 7.4 but the installer gives an error message: U44M2P7 (even after removing ACR 8.1 from the Plug-ins/File format folder in the Library).
It is really impossible to work this way (I'm a professional photographer), so does anybody know a way to fix 8.1 or to reinstall 7.4?

Thanks Noel; I used Time Machine to set the various Adobe folders back to their state before the update, and 7.4 is up and running again.
But when I started working on the same file again, it was as slow as it was when I ran 8.1. I had created a fair amount of local adjustments, using both the brush and the graduated filter. With the brush I had selected a rather complex shape.
I discovered that when I removed these local adjustments one by one, ACR became snappier every time. So it seemed that the problem was not related to 8.1, but to both 7.4 and 8.1 becoming sluggish when a fair amount of local adjustments was applied.
I checked the XMP file of this photo and it had grown to 1.7 MB. I then opened another file whose XMP was 1.1 MB and in this case ACR behaved accordingly: sluggish, but less than with the previous photo.
I also tested ACR on my laptop, where I had not upgraded to 8.1, and there ACR behaved identically as on my desktop computer.
So apparently there is a soft, but severe limit to the number and complexity of the local adjustments you can make in ACR. I had made complex adjustments before; and I can't remember to have encountered such behaviour before.
But from version 7 on you could use a lot more sliders than ever before to define your local adjustments, and I'm now working with huge D800 files. Apparently the first time I really went too far and pushed ACR over it's limits, coincided with the upgrade to ACR 8.1.
Anyway, problem solved. I hope future versions will be a little more robust (I'm saving for a 60 MP Hasselblad:-)

Photoshop cs6 running extremely slow on opening a file. have reset prefs and set type to none. have to force quit  most of the time.

I'm experiencing the same trouble.  Photoshop takes 5 minutes to open then runs fine.
I recently bought a new iMac AND updated to Adobe Master Collection CS6.  My concern is that PhotoShop now takes 5 minutes to open. The Photoshop desktop pops up immediately, but the moment you click on a tool or try to open a file (no matter the size) results in the spinning wheel for five minutes before you can do anything.  After that, Photoshop appears to work fine.
    What I’ve done:
    Ran Adobe updater
    Reset Photoshop Preferences
Validated all fonts and removed any trouble fonts
    Ran the font test
Set font preview size to none
Cleared the Photoshop type cache and system cache
    Disabled Symantec Endpoint
Tried running with the GPU processor on/off and in basic
Tried opening Photoshop with optional third party plug-ins turned off (still took five minutes but this time I didn’t even get the Photoshop desktop view until AFTER the five minutes)
I’m wondering since I migrated the files form my old computer (and older versions of Master Collection) did something get corrupted.

  • FAQ: What cameras are supported in ACR 7.0 with Photoshop CS6?

See this link for full details on camera support in Camera Raw versions:
    http://blogs.adobe.com/lightroomjournal/2012/03/raw-support-in-lightroom-and-camera-raw.ht ml
    Snip taken from link above:
You’ll also note that ACR7, available with Photoshop CS6 beta, is lagging the most in updated camera support.  This is based on when we lock down or “bake” the code for each release.   Even though ACR7 was only released last week it was “baked” before Lightroom 4.0 and Camera Raw 6.7.  Similarly, Lightroom 4.0 was finalized before Camera Raw 6.7.  We’ll get Lightroom and Camera Raw in sync soon but in the interim, here’s the latest incremental support list for each product, relative to Camera Raw 6.6 and Lightroom 3.6:
    Photoshop CS6 beta with ACR7
    Canon PowerShot S100V
    Fuji FinePix X-S1
    NOTE:
ACR7.1 will have the superset of all currently supported cameras in ACR6.7 and LR4.1 plus a few extras.

I was just curious and hunting around ACR 7.1 and Photoshop trying our the features. Also I have found that LR4 RC2 has follows ACR 7.1 as far as lens profiles go working with RAW images, so there is some consistency.
Wonder what the difference is between a RAW rendered image in ACR versus a Photoshop rendered image. Given, I could be wrong here, that Lens Correction is based on the optics of the lens, focal length, and the characteristics of the sensor, so would they not be the same in ACR and Photoshop?
I think I need to go check out a lens profiler
    Cheers
    Mike
There is one reason that I may go back into the Lens Correction Filter and that might be to fine tune some of the persective tools. With a large panorama much easier to see what needs to be done rather than view seperate images, and i have done that in the past. did not come to me until after I had hit the Send Button

  • ACR 7.1 Beta & Photoshop CS6 Lens Profiles

If I open a Nikon RAW (NEF) file in ACR 7.1 Beta it correctly finds my Camera and Lens Combination Nikon D3 with the Nikon 24-70m f2,8 with the Adobe Lens Profile. However, when I leave ACR and the image is open in Photoshop, go to Filter, Lens Correction it does not automatically detect the correct camera and lens combination.
It shows the Camera Make as NIKON CORPORATION, but the Camera Model and Lens Model are not detected and I am asked to choose. In the Lens Profiles I see two choices, one for a Nikon D3x with the correct lens, the other for a generic Nikon Camera with a Sigma 24-70 F2.8.
I would have thought the detection process would have been the same?

  • Photoshop CS6 very very slow (Windows 7)

Hi, im desperate as ive run out of options i think. Photoshop CS6 behaves slow, very slow.
Even with no document open, right after launch it reacts with delay on any mouseclick, sometimes it takes
more than 20 seconds before a menu pops open after clicking. Painting paintbrushes are impossible slow.
    Basically any action is dragged.
Its impossible to work like this. With all previous versions of PS i never encountered this.
    Things i tried :
    - turned off gpu acceleration (i read that gpu can cause performance issues, some ppl solved slowness by turning it off)
    - updated latest nvidia drivers
    - reinstalled photoshop
    - tried to inspect photoshop processes with ProcessHacker, even when at 5% cpu it runs extremely slow
    specs :
    Windows 7
    Nvidia GT545
1 terrabyte free scratch disk space (on C:)
    8 gb ram
    CPU i7 2600

Has it always run slow, or did this start recently?
What anti-virus are you using?  Have you tried disabling it to see it that make a difference?
Are you working over a network?

  • Brand New Machine and Photoshop CS6 running very slow

I just installed Photoshop CS6 on my new Machine and it is running horrible. Moving around objects, turning effects on/off, zooming, and more all take for ever to render.  I can not figure out why. I have updated video card drivers and more. Scratch Disk is set to a second disk and messed with all of the GPU settings. Only photoshop runs bad on this machine. I should not be having issues with the system. Below is the system info from Photoshop. Also this machine is running with two SSD drives which should make PS run even faster.

Tried Photoshop at all sorts of various settings including default. All with the D drive being used for the Scratch disk. Working on the similar size file described above. The file I am working on now is 4000 x 4800 pixels, CMYK, 8 bit depth.  Photoshop is slow selecting layers with auto select, very slow when moving layers around the Canvas, and slow rendering the Canvas when zooming in and out. This document also has about  30 layers and is 80mg.
I only use the 64 bit version of Photoshop these days. Also all three monitors are set at 60 Hertz. Photoshop is closed and reopened upon all changes.
I use to be a Photoshop Certified Expert in CS3 so I am extremely familar with the product. I am just stumped.

  • Photoshop cs6 opacity slider slow refresh why?

    Hi
    i have photoshop cs6 64 bit , windows 7 64bit with 32gb of ram
the last intel cpu , i nvida geforce gtx 760
photoshop cs6 run fast outside the opacity slider , if i increase or decrease with the mouse , i have a slow refresh
without gpu is more quickly what's wrong?
i have the last nvdia drivers , can you help me?
i add a screenshot to let you see which slider i'm talking about

I have no answer...But yesterday my PsCC win7 would not display on/off when checking on/off previews.  But a restart of Pc and all is normal again.  So I'd try a CPU shutdown and restart....if not fixed, try a Ps prefs reset.

  • Photoshop CS6 running extremely slow after graphics card switch

My old graphics card died (a evga 8800 Ultra Superclocked 756MB 384 bit), so I replaced it with a (XFX HD-455X-ZAFR Radeon HD 4550 1GB 64-bit DDR2 PCI Express 2.0 x16 ).  I knew this was a less capable card but from reading other forums it seemed that GPU performance was not as big of an issue in Photoshop and the 4550 was a supported card by Photoshop.  However, I was previously able to batch open about 15 (ish) photos at a time to work on in Photoshop.  Now if I open more than 1 everything is VERY slow and even that 1 doesn't open as fast.  Bigger photos appear blurry (but when I zoom in they are not) many filters are slower.  Very annoying.  Nothing else has changed on my computer, just the graphics card.  Here are my specs (I know I need more RAM and have been considering an upgrade there but am not sure if I need to ditch my current video card as well)
    Asustek p5e3 motherboard
Core 2 extreme qx9650 (quad core at 3.0 ghz)
    4 GB of DDR3 1333mhz ram
    (3) 500 GB 7200RPM hard drives
    Radeon HD 4550 1GB 64-bit DDR2
    500 Watt Power Supply

I don't mean to be critical, but why would you upgrade to an outdated card like the 4550?  The 4000-series isn't even listed under the cards Photoshop is tested with any more.
Tested video cards for Photoshop CC and CC 2014
That said, a problem that can happen with a video card switch is that drivers get left in the system from the old one.
Maybe it would be a good start in diagnosing this for you go to into the Help - System Info menu, copy the data in the whole first section, and post it here.

  • Photoshop CS6: How Long Will ACR Continue to be Updated to Support New Camera Models?

I have Photoshop CS6 and do not wish to update to Photoshop CC.
I see that Panasonic have recently announced the Lumix DMC-FZ1000, and it is rumoured that a Lumix DMC-LX8 will shortly be announced.
Should either of these cameras suit, will Adobe update the ACR version available for Photoshop CS6 users, so that these camera's RAW formats are supported in Photoshop CS6, in due course?
Edit: I see that Photoshop CS6 is still available to buy from Adobe, so I would assume that the ACR version available for Photoshop CS6 will continue to be updated to support new camera RAW formats, up until a short time after CS6 is eventually discontinued?

I am having the same problems. My guess is that a lot of people are having the same problems and just living with it. Those of us who know where to go on the Internet come here to find a fix.
It seems Verizon has some explaining to do. Maybe they should try Beta testing new software a little better. I would rather have to wait longer for something that works. I am sure that some manager or director said this is close enough, deploy it and we will see what happens. Well, you are seeing the problems. Time to fix your mistake.
All of us are telling our friends about the problems. The longer this goes on, the more people we will tell about it.
Wouldn't you rather us be telling our friends that their is an error in the new interface and that you are working hard to fix it?
If you want to be up front about this, then just tell us. We are adults and can handle it. If you made a mistake, own up to it and give us some credit for doing your Beta testing in the field.
Customer Service is all about telling the truth and if you made a mistake, admit it and lets move on with a fix. I do not want to be told again that I should be able to unplug it, power cycle it, try the on-board diagnostics, etc., etc.......
I am going to be repsonding on a daily basis to keep this topic at the top of the list.
Time to come clean. You will feel better Verizon.
    Let's talk tomorrow.

  • My computer can't read raw files from my nikon d4s in Photoshop cs6

    Hello,
i have a MacBook Pro and have Os X 10.8.5 installed
Photoshop CS6 can't open the raw files from my Nikon D4S.
I tried to install Adobe CameraRaw 7.1 but keep getting error messages. ALso tried to install the patch to no avail.
    Any suggestions?
    Thank you

ACR 8.4 provides support for the Nikon D4s, and there is now ACR 8.6 for Photoshop CS6.

  • Photoshop CS6: are my expectations too high?

Photoshop CS6 is very slow opening some files.
I am using Windows 7 Pro 64 bit, an
    Intel Core i7-4770 CPU @ 3.40GHz,
    16 GB RAM
2TB accelerated (via 32GB SSD) primary HDD (6gb Sata III) - OS and Photoshop on this drive
120GB Samsung Evo 840 SSD dedicated for scratch disk usage - no files on it whatsoever
The file I am using as a reference is a .psd file that is 166 MB in size. This file has many layers.
When I have cache tile size set to 128k it opens in less than 6 seconds. At these settings the document size reads 24.1M/929.6M and efficiency shows 88%
When I have Photoshop set to use 1024k cache tile size, opening this file takes a good 27-32 seconds. Document size shows 24.1M/4.45G and efficiency shows 30%! (scratch reads 18.4G/12.2G)
First off, I admit that when I installed the dedicated SSD for a scratch disk I expected I would see an immediate improvement in operating speed of Photoshop and that this particular file would load quickly even if I had set the tile cache to 1024k. However, I see virtually no difference in opening this file from before when I had no dedicated SSD scratch disk.
Are my expectations wrong on this count and if so why?
Second, I can't get my head around the issue with setting the tile cache size to 1024 creating such a difference in file opening speed when compared with 128k as well as the reported doc size of 4.45G and 30% efficiency!
I thought for sure I'd never see my efficiency drop down much below 100% due to the fact that I have so much ram (i have set Photoshop to use up to 85%) and that I have this dedicated 120GB SSD scratch disk. Why is the efficiency so low when I have unleashed Photoshop to use all 120GB of the SSD and the Scratch size reads 18.4G/12.2G so it doesn't even appear as though it is using much of the SSD, yet my efficiency remains at 30%!?
Are my expectations wrong here too, and if so, why?
    thanks

    Hi doctorhifi,
I was able to download your file.
Settings:  Cache Tile Size: 1028K (my normal setting)
Dragging it from Explorer to Photoshop, the application opens and loads the file in 11 seconds.  At that point I'm presented with a dialog with a list of 9 missing fonts (not unexpected, every system is different).
Just to get to the point where the dialog is presented, my Photoshop Temp scratch file grows to 27.4 GB.  System RAM usage (per Task Manager) reaches 17.9 GB.  Clicking through the missing font dialog and displaying the document causes RAM usage to go to 18.1 GB.
Doing Image - Reveal All takes another 8 seconds and results in a very wide 11413 x 3365 pixel canvas to be shown, which is white and extends off to the right.  RAM usage is at this point up to 26.1 GB and the scratch file to reach 49.5 GB.
    Settings:  Cache Tile Size: 128K
Dragging it from Explorer to Photoshop, the application opens and loads the file in 7 seconds.  At that point I'm presented with the missing font dialog.
Just to get to the point where the dialog is presented, my Photoshop Temp scratch file grows to 4.5 GB.  System RAM usage (per Task Manager) grows to 9.0 GB.  Clicking through sees RAM usage to go to 9.2 GB.
Doing Image - Reveal All takes another 5 seconds.  RAM usage is at this point up to 11.2 GB and the scratch file at 8.0 GB.
    - Faster and with much smaller numbers than with the large cache tile size.
It's pretty clear the smaller cache tile size is the better choice for working on documents similar to yours.  And I have to say, I'm surprised to see the system resource usage go up so much just with the larger cache tile size - that's not typical.  What IS pretty typical, however, is for Photoshop to chew through gigabytes like candy.  I believe the fact that the RAM usage is a bit higher than the amount you have is probably why it takes quite a lot longer to open on your system with the large cache tile size.
I'll admit I don't know all the internal implications of the different cache tile sizes either, but Adobe DOES say that a "tall and thin" document will do better with the smaller choices.  "Tall" meaning lots of layers.
I haven't looked your document over in detail yet to try to determine why it's quite so resource-intensive.   I see on a quick glance that it has some smart objects that have been transformed.  I wonder if something about having done that is causing some thrashing in the process of generating the final image.

  • Photoshop CS6 Stuck on Hand Tool in ACR & PS with Mac/ Mountain Lion

Photoshop CS6 gets stuck in "hand mode" after being open for a few hours. Suddenly, I can't use liquefy because Photoshop gets stuck in hand mode. I can't use ACR to the full potential because I can't use the adjustment brush because all I have is the hand tool. I try to open files, but all I get is the hand tool!
I know it's not an issue of pressing the space bar, I have tried that. I have closed all the Adobe programs (Bridge, Lightroom, Photoshop), then re-opened Photoshop and it does not go away.
It only goes away after re-starting the computer, but that is not acceptable.
I am on a 17" Macbook Pro, Mountain Lion 10.8.1, using CS6 products.
    Can this please be fixed?

Maybe a corrupt PS cache. Can you try clearing & re-creating your preferences? Follow instructions here: http://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/kb/preference-file-functions-names-locations.html

  • Photoshop CS6 won´t recognize ACR after installing ACR 8.4 beta.

    Hi all,
just today Adobe has relaeased the new ACR 8.4 beta. As usual I downloaded it, installed it to my Photoshop CS6 (running on a 2010 iMac/ OS is 10.6.8), and to my surprise PS no longer was able to find ACR at all. In other words: I could no longer open any RAW file.
I cranked up time machine, replaced the PS folders with those stored via time machine from a few days ago, restarted the computer and tried again, but the result is the same: PS seems unable to find Camera RAW.
Does anybody have an idea where the problem might lie? Any help is appreciated!

    Hi there,
    Very sorry for the inconvenience.
Camera Raw 8.4 is no longer supported on OS X 10.6.x (Snow Leopard). We first announced this back when Camera Raw 8.3 was released, here:
    http://blogs.adobe.com/lightroomjournal/2013/12/camera-8-3-for-photoshop-cc-and-photoshop- cs6-available-now.html
This notice was also posted at the top of the 8.4 RC download page on Labs, here:
    http://labs.adobe.com/technologies/cameraraw8-4/
You can either upgrade your OS to OS X 10.7 or higher or uninstall ACR 8.4 and reinstall 8.3.

  • Photoshop CS6: ACR Local Adjustment Slider Settings Retained Even When Cancelling Out of ACR

I've come across something in Photoshop CS6's ACR 7.2, which I don't think for a moment is a bug, but just what I would consider a slightly strange way of how Photoshop CS6 behaves:
When working on an image in ACR, if you select one of the local adjustment tabs, such as Graduated Filter, and move any of the sliders on the right-hand side, any values you change will be retained if pressing 'Cancel', then opening the image again in ACR and selecting the same tab. I find this surprising, as I would have thought that by pressing 'Cancel', any adjusted settings, since opening the image on this occasion in ACR, would not be retained.
Furthermore, if you open another image in ACR and select the same local adjustment tab, the same settings that you adjusted in the other image have identical slider settings in that image as well.
I can see that this behaviour could be viewed as useful, i.e. when wanting to use the same local adjustment on multiple images, as any adjustment of the local adjustment's slider settings, on their own, will have no effect unless you actually perform the selected local adjustment to the image. But, as I say, I would have expected Photoshop to simply not retain any settings you have adjusted, since opening the image on this occasion in ACR, if you don't press 'Open Image' or 'Done', and simply press 'Cancel'.
Does anyone have any thoughts about this?

Clearly since those settings are not actually going into the image, but are just preparation for the next pin to be dropped by the local adjustment brush (or are further adjustments done on the last pin selected), Adobe didn't see fit to revert them on Cancel.
That said, I have to agree; if I were to botch up a bunch of settings I had before and wanted to revert them all, the first thing that would come to my mind is to hit the [Cancel] button.
I wonder if the disparity between the ways Apple and PC software typically interacts with the user could be at the heart of this...  On PC, adjustments in a dialog are generally "staged" until an [OK] button is hit, so of course [Cancel] throws them away - while on Apple adjustments are often (by convention?) stored permanently as soon as the control is released.
