ACR 8.3 and D600 .nef Files

I'm using a Nikon D600, shooting with a flaat picture profile to create both RAW and JPG files.
I'm using: Adobe Bridge CC ver: 6.0.1. 6 x64 / Lightroom 5.3 / ACR 8.3 (I'm a CC user and I have all the current software available.)
I have alot of experience with the workflow of Adobe Bridge->ACR->Photoshop using Photoshop CS3 extended version. I'm not sure what the Adobe Bridge Version would've been, nor ACR.
Today, when I look at my .nef files in Adobe Bridge, they are heavily contrasted images. The .jpgs look flat, just like the profile I chose, but the .nef's look like a preset is being applied to them.
I've read the forums topics about .nef files and Camera Profiles, but I've never had to change any preset when I used Bridge->ACR->Photoshop in the past. However, I did go into Adobe Bridge->ACR->Camera Calibration and changed the CAMERA PROFILE to "Camera Neutral" and left the PROCESS as "2012(current)." The "Camera Nuetural" DID help alot. But is that all that is available- or am I missing something?
I thought there was (maybe) a problem with Adobe Bridge, since the images looked like the preset was applied even before I ever tried to open any of the .nef images. So I went into Lr and when I imported the images, they looked like I would expect them to- until I clicked on them. Then I could see the preset being applied. So, I went into Lr->Develop->Camera Calibration and the same 2 settings as mention above where there. So I left the PROCESS as "2012(current), and changed the PROFILE to "Camera Neutral". It helped alot, but is that all that I can do?
Is that all I can do? It seems like too much is being changed on the .nef files without me ever touching them.

Thank you Jim. I appreciate your help. I have seen the different profiles that can be applied and the Camera Neutral makes a huge difference in the .nef image (bringing it back to more of a flat image, which is what I wanted).
I have the same issue in Adobe Bridge, and I can select the Camera Neutral from there as well and it makes about the same difference as in Lr.
I've pulled up some older images that I shot with my D200 (I can't tell you what picture profile I shot with). It confirms what I remember from working with .nef files before I got my D600 and started using the CC versions of Lr & Br which is: The .nef files are, well... 'raw', while the .jpgs look 'refined'.
In my case (now) its the complete opposite. My jpegs look 'raw' and my .nef's are punchy, contrasty, bright....
I can't help but wonder why my .nefs are so changed when they're supposed to be raw files. Even when I apply the profile in Lr, or in ACR of "camera neutral" it still does not get me back to what (I believe) the raw image should look like. Why would a .nef look better than the .jpg when I haven't yet applied ANY setting to it. And, if it's the profile in ACR or Lr that is causing this to happen, then why doesn't the .nef image look at least as flat as the .jpg when I change it to 'camera neutral'?
You said that Lr generates its own preview of the raw image data. I guess I don't understand why, then, when I change the image in Lr to Camera Neutral, how come I still have a .nef that is considerably brighter, more contrasty than the original .jpg?

Opening Nikon D600 NEF files using PhotoShop CS4 11.0.2 and ACR 5.7.0.213

Hello,
I've just bought a Nikon D600.
I have Photoshop CS4 11.0.2 and ACR 5.7.0.213.
With these versions, I'm unable to open the D600 NEF files. I get the following message:
"Could not complete your request because it is not the right kind of document"
Yet I can view the NEFs in other software that pre-dates the D600, e.g. FastStone Image Viewer 4.6.
Does anybody know if I can get a plug-in from Adobe for PS CS4 that allows me to edit D600 NEFs?

Either upgrade to Photoshop CS6 or download the free DNG Converter and covert your NEFs to DNG.

Nikon D600 NEF files and Photoshop CS3

Hi,
I am using Photoshop CS3 and cannot upload Nikon D600 NEF files--obviously a gap between the two debuts. Are there any suggestions, or am I stuck upgrading?

You could get Lightroom 5, then output your files as tiffs to be opened in CS3. I haven't used the standalone DNG converter, so I'm not sure if that gives you the option to save as a tiff also. You could try the dng converter first to see if you can save as another file type, or use a legacy DNG version that is conpatable with CS3.

Updated to 4.3 and D600 NEF Still Not Working

I updated to 4.3 today and I was still unable to import my D600 NEF/RAW files. After I updated, I rebooted and it seemed like I could actually import the D600 NEF files. However a few moments later, somehow those images were no longer in my catalog/library and when I try to reimport them again it says the files are not compatible and no preview was available during the import screen. Any thoughts?

I don't know what you did but Lr 4.3 works perfectly with the NEFs from my D600.
Have you - previously to importing them into Lr - transfered them to your hard drive with Nikon View?
There have been reports that this renders the NEFs incompatible with Lr.
Try importing the NEFs directly from Camera / Memory card into Lr, or if you prefer to put them on the hard drive first, use your OS for that.

LR 4.2 will not send D600 NEF files to CS5 or CS6

LR 4.2 will not send D600 NEF files to CS5 or CS6 whenever I right click on the image and chose "Edit In"...is this a glitch that is to be fixed in the upcoming LR upgrade or is this something I can fix now? Converting to a jpeg or dng before I can export to CS is a pain in the rumpus ;o)

They are release candidates, which means they're undergoing final testing but they're much more stable than a beta version. They have full support for the D600, so you should find the rendering looks better too.

PSE11 not recognising D600 NEF files?

I used to have a Nikon D600. When I first got it I didn't upgrade from PSE9 and consequently I processed quite a number of files in ViewNX 2.
On revisiting those files now that I have PSE11 (which works well with D800 files) PSE11 doesn't seem to recognise and when I go into the Editor and try to open one from there I get the following message:

Lightoom 4.4, Camera raw 7.4 and D800E NEF files

I am trying to get a NEF files made on a Nikon D800E to Import to Lightroom 4.4 with Camera raw 7.4. I get an error that states the following files were not imported because they could not be read.
I can import them to Photoshop CS6 and use them in photoshop but cannot find any way to get them into Lightroom. For a while my photos were partially importing and some NEF files werent on the first few tries (but subsequently did). I have updated LR, updated Camera RAW, updated the MAC operating system, and have a newer version of PS (CS6). I have tried from the camera directly and through a card reader with multiple cards but nothing works. Help!

If you are doing a Copy or Move Import method, the “could not be read” means the DESTINATION folder in your Import panel is not writable, and so when LR tries to read the files after it has copied them to the destination, it cannot.

LR4.4 AND D800 NEF FILES

I attempted to load several photos from my new D800 on LR4.4, actually it was add. About the first 10 photos had an error message which read Preview not available for NEF files. The other 59 or so pics downloaded with not issue, it was just the first 10 or so. later I noticed that all the ones that were loaded were 8bit. I think the ones that wouldn't preview were 14 bit. I processed those in CS6, saved as a TIFF, saved back to my external HD and added them to LR. I'm using a new iMac 27" (less than 2 mos old). Using Mac Mountain Lion as the operating system. Is there a 14 bit issue with LR and the NEF files for the Nikon D800?

I have my D800 set to 14 bit, just as my previous Nikons. No problem there.
Raw files are in any case encoded into 16 bit in Lightroom. 8 bit files either have to be jpegs (jpeg only supports 8 bit), or they have been exported as 8 bit rendered files from Lightroom.
The "Add" option is not available when you import from a card reader, you only have "copy" and "copy as DNG". So have you transfered the files onto your computer with an old version of Nikon Transfer? It's known to corrupt files so that Lightroom can't read them (the newer versions are OK). I think View NX did that too.
The CDs that came with my D800 are still in their plastic wrapping and I've no intention to touch them, whatever they contain.

Help with Nikon D600 NEF files, CS6, and ACR 7.3 beta

I have been unable to open NEF files from my Nikon D600 in Photoshop CS6, and ACR 7.3 beta. Any suggestions/guidance would be much appreciated.
RAW was set to 14 bit color, but I can't see that that would matter?

From discussion with others, it would appear that the files were corrupted during transfer.
I have some suggestions that I will try tomorow.
I have no problems opening old Nikon D700 NEF files in Photoshop CS6, and when ACR opens the file it indicates I'm using ACR 7.3 beta.

Strange Artifacts in ACR 3.7 and 4.0 and D70s NEF files???

Hi to all. Yesterday i found strange bug in ACR 3.7 and higher (4.0). When open some of my D70s nefs some artiffacts appear in my images, especially in overexposed arreas. In ACR 3.6 and Nikon Capture this artifacts does not appear. What is wrong with this versions of ACR?

In the case of the Pentax files, it was Macs (OK) WIntel (NOT).
I also forgot to mention that Thomas Knoll stated a fix would be forthcoming only for ACRv4 and lightroom versions. The symptoms are definitely the same, but you have to wonder if it's the same problem, and for which ACR versions a fix will be forthcoming.

D600 .NEF files won't open in CS5 Camera Raw?

.NEF files taken on my new Nikon D600 won't open in CS5 Bridge Camera Raw.
Error Message: The Photoshop Camera Raw plug-in did not recognise the format of one or more files."
.NEF files taken with the Nikon D90 are opening perfectly.
There must be plug-ins available - I just can't seem to find them. Can someone send a link please?

D600 raw files only open in CS6/ACR7.3. You need to upgrade your Photoshop. http://www.adobe.com/photoshop/
An alternative is to use the free DNG Converter to convert your NEFs to DNGs and those will open in older ACR versions. Another alternative is to get Lightroom 4.3.

ACR 8.5 and Nikon NEF: in Photoshop and Lightroom

Today I was on Nikon presentation. A manager from Russian office sad that Nikon gave Adobe some information how to open NEF files CORRECTLY in ACR, but that algorithms can be used ONLY in Photoshop, not in Lightroom. Is that true or fake? As I know, ACR for Ps and Lr is the same in case color reproduction (and has some differences in image correction).

To compare PS/ACR with LR, if you have both products, you can do an Export a TIF from LR and do a Save Image TIF from ACR, using the same parameters, and then open both in PS and layer one on top of the other, set the blend mode to Difference, merge the layers, and see if you have anything besides 0s for the pixel values of the combined layers. You could stretch the image in Levels to make finding any non-zero pixels, easier.
It has been said, above, that LR 5.x versions had a bug where they did not apply noise-reduction or sharpening in some situations during the Export so its important to understand what precise versions of the products you're talking about. Intending for the raw-conversion algorithms to be the same, and a coding error making them not so are two different things. In other words the mathematics would be the same, but the implementation in a different programming language by different people could have coding errors.
As far as which of Nikon Capture or Adobe Lightroom/PS-ACR is better, the words someone says or writes are a fact if you have the recording or original documents, but the idea they are communicating is an opinion and you can really only list pros and cons for someone else to draw their own conclusion, and unless you're quoting word-for-word, your interpretation of what is being said is also somewhat of an opinion, yours.

Unable to open D600 NEF files in CS6 despite updating to Camera Raw 7.3.

Hi, I have a Nikon D600 and can not open the Raw (NEF) files in Photosop CS6.
I have tried:
Upgraded to CS6
Updated CS6 and Camera Raw to 7.3
Uninstalled CS6 (as per Adobe instructions)
Reinstalled CS6
Updated to Camera Raw 7.3
and
Downloaded the Adobe DNG converter, and updated it - I get an error message when I try to use it:
'The source folder does not contain any supported camera raw files.'
I have no idea what to do now! Has anyone else had this problem and worked it out?
Any help would really be appreciated.

How to read Nikon D600 NEF files

I bought a Nikon D600 but am unable read the NEF files read with my version of Lightroom 3 that runs on an older Mac Book which cannot be upgraded to LR4. If I buy a new Mac, can I upgrade to LR4 on the new machine or do I have to purchase a new version? If I can upgrade how do I transfer LR3 to the new machine. Also, I have a student version of Photoshop CS5 Extended. Can I purchase an upgrade to CS6 on a new machine?
In doing research I saw where both Lightroom 4 and Photoshop CS6 had some problems with Apple's OS X 10.8. Have these been resolved yet?

The D600 is diectly supported by Lightroom 4.2/Camera Rw 7.2 and higher. So updgrading to Lightroom 4 or Photoshop CS6 will provide full suppor for the D600. Alternatively, you can download the free DNG Converter 7.2 or higher and use it to convert your NEF files to DNG format which is already supported by Lightroom 3.x
You can upgrade from Lr3 to Lr4 on your old and/or new machine as there is no activation code to stop you. You'll probbaly be asked for the Serial Number for Lr3 on the new machine to prove that an upgrade is legitimate. Buying Photoshop CS6 then upgrading the new machine to this is also possible, but you'll need either the DVD for CS5 or have it already installed on the new machine. Basically, CS6 needs to see that a copy of CS5 is available for installation or already on the computer.
As to the problems with 10.8. These have been addressed.
