ACR and Output Profiles again.

I read a techie fight about this subject in an earlier post.
I understand that ProPhotoRGB 8 or 16 is a possible way to go and then reconvert or what ever.
The question that was never answered was: Can we change from the 4 default spaces to a different color space that we want to use while still in ACR?
At this point a simple yes or no would be in order.
If it is a no answer. I would like to respectfully request it be an option in the next version of ACR.
Thanks, Ben

Thanks Jeff,
I receive poor originals from clients that need repair. I like to open them in ACR because I can make a lot of moves in one place and test the waters
IE. I had a very dark, noisy, but basically OK Jpeg image that I would open, if possible in ProfotoRGB but in 1.0 or 1.4 gamma false profile and then do what I thought needed to be done.
This I know could be accomplished in other ways, but I was playing "what if?" and asking "why not?".
I did my own work around in Photoshop and got the job done.
The idea is just one of convenience and time saving. ACR 4.3 is a great asset to me for both raw and cooked files.
The result of the prior wordfest on this subject indicated to me that I am an art guy, not a computer science guy. I would like it If ACR would let me do what I think I need to do in a way that is conceptualy possible for my undersized brain to understand and have ACR do what needs to be done behind the scenes.

  • CS3 ACR and Nikon Profiles

I recently installed CS3 on an older Dell workstation (ca 2005 or so) to enable the use of the Epson scanner on XP Sp3. I also want the user of that computer to access CS3 to at least learn fundamentals. CS3 shows 10.0.1, ACR 4.6.0.30. All I can see in Calibration is 3.6 and 4.6, not even Adobe Standard. I have not had this happen on previous installations on XP and I am stumped. This isn't a big problem, the scanner doesn't use them, but certainly, she should have access to those profiles.
There are two versions of View NX on that machine which she has been using but I have that on my own machine (Win 7) with no apparent interference.
    So, what am I missing?
I should add that the Nikon cameras are D80 and D90, both supported by 4.6

While ACR 4.6 can (if I recall correctly) use DNG profiles, I don't think they were installed with ACR, I think they were (and are now) installed with the free DNG Converter. The current shipping version is 6.6 which should run in XP. Install that and you should then have the DNG profiles.

  • ACR and camera profiles

I feel like such a dunce! I have heard this mentioned before, but I don't understand. How do I select my specific camera in ACR? I'm sure you all know by now, but I am using the Nikon D70.
    thanks!

    Ann,
My problems appear to be OpenGL-related, as do many of the same problems other users are seeing. I'm willing to accept that something about the machine that I'm seeing the problems on (my main XP work machine) are related to something about my system. I've tried everything that's been suggested in the forum, including updating my video drivers and various other things. Part of the problem, IMO, is that video card makers are geared strongly toward gaming, and don't really care about PS users. Adobe tells me to contact ATI, which I did. ATI tells me it's Adobe's problem. Go figger.
    My
main problem is this: When I open a file in PS and then drag the window to a different location, the content of the window disappears, letting the background show through. Adobe says that they haven't been able to reproduce the problem, but it's been reported by some other users. Makes it kinda hard to get any work done!
On my other machine, which is used mainly for surfing, I recently did a clean install of Vista 64-bit, and CS4 works fine on it. Hence, I'm pretty sure my work machine is fouled up some how, I just don't know where to look for the problem.

  • Output sharpening in Adobe Camera Raw (ACR) and Photoshop CS5

Output sharpening in Adobe Camera Raw (ACR) and Photoshop CS5
I want to do two-pass sharpening - capture and output - with output capture done just before I print. I do the initial (capture) sharpening in the ACR Detail/Sharpening panel, with Amount slider set to, for example, 100.  Then, I open the image to PS CS5 as a Smart Object, and use layers and masks for further editting.
My question is, can I go back to ACR for the final (output) sharpening pass?  When I re-open the file in ACR, the Sharpening Amount slider is back to zero, but the other three sliders are still at the settings I used at the start of the process, i.e., the capture sharpening.  If I again set the Amount slider to a positive value, then again open the image in PS for printing, will my second pass through the ACR Sharpening panel take effect - will it accumulate on top of the initial sharpening?
By the way, the reason I want do output sharpening in ACR rather than, say, PS Unsharp Mask, is so I can use the Masking slider in ACR, which is much easier than the comparable techniques available in PS.  I am aware that some say you should not do any masking for the output sharpening. I'd like to though.
    Thanks for ideas.

This is pretty much the way I do it, and I also always found ACR sharpening superior to anything in Photoshop. There is the "sharpen for output" in ACR, but you have little control over it.
The tricky part is feeding the file through ACR a second time. I don't think re-opening the Smart Object will do anything more than you could have done the first time. I do it with a rendered TIFF, and have an intricate set of actions that I run in the Image Processor Pro. It's a mess, and you don't want to know.
The frustrating part is how to action ACR. I just can't figure it out. It'll work, and then I have to change some setting and the action stops working. I suspect you need a script, but so far I haven't found any.
So I've come to a compromise: I first process to TIFF in a temp folder, then I bulk open them in ACR to sharpen, then a second process to finish up.
For less critical files I have a sharpening action that comes close, involving edge masks and blend ifs, using smart sharpen which tends to preserve edges better than unsharp mask, and with less accumulation of noise.
Bottom line: I'm also very interested in further comments to this. BTW, I recently bought Lightroom 4, so maybe there is a posibility using that in a mixed workflow.

  • Camera Profiles and Lens Profiles are missing in ACR 8.2.

Yesterday I tried to install a new update for CS CC, but it failed. Then I uninstalled the app completely, and installed it again.
When I opened ACR 8.2 I found out that there were no Camera profiles and LensProfiles (as it used to be before). Instead of usual Camera Profile was Matrix. There were no Lens Profiles in Photoshop  Lens Corrections either.
The folder C/.../App Data/Roaming/Adobe/CameraRaw/LensProfilesDefault was also empty.
I reinstalled the application a couple times with the same result.
How can I fix the problem?
    Regards, Yulia

Well,  C:\ProgramData\Adobe\CameraRaw\CameraProfiles\Adobe Standard is also completely empty.

  • Same problem yet again max speed and ip profile sl...

I have only just had the issue fixed and it is again here it seems to happen between the 3rd and 5th of each month.
Everything was going good 28th august did speed test my max achievable speed was 7150kbps. My ip profile was 2500kbps.  My hub setting for noise was at 3.0db/19.0dB
1st September noticed the speed was not as quick did a speed test max achievable speed was now 2000kbps and my ip profile had gone to 2000kbps and my hub noise was on 12.6dB/18.0db
This morning i got a phone call but nobody there checked my speed after as ive had such calls before and after these have happened it affects my broadband WELL GUESS WHAT
my Max achievable speed is now 500kbps and my ip profile is 500kbps and my hub setting shows my noise at 19.1dB/ 16.0dB So again i cant really use my broadband as it takes so long page to load it times out.
this is happening every month now from march and im getting really fed up with it now it gets fixed yep for a short while but then im back to square one again the beginning of the next month . I would like this issue to be fixed for good.

I have done the quiet line test and i hear nothing the modem is connected straight into my main socket which is the only phone socket i have it does have a built in filter in it.

I have deleted all old M0zilla profile folders and reinstalled Firefox again to no avail.
After intallation was completed, the automatic startup just placed a small box on the screen "Import wiz". This just sat there with no activity. After I closed this box, none of the Firefox start buttons would open the program -- just the blue rotating icon for about 2 seconds then nothing.

  • How does Adobe make their camera  profiles for ACR and Lightroom?

I'm not interested in the proprietary algorithms , but I am curious as to the photographic mechanics and hardware tools used by  Adobe to make the various camera profiles as they differ markedly from the ones I make using the DNG Profile Editor.
My methodology is to set an X-Rite 24 patch Color Checker target, light it evenly with electromic flash (with 0.1 stops from center to corners as mesured with a Sekonic L-758r Meter) and make a series of exposures bracketed in third of a stop increments around the meter reading in case the camera sensitivity differs from the meter's.
I then process the raw files and convert them to the DNG format, select the best exposure and run it through the DNG Profile editor. My results differ from Adobe's generic profiles for that camera enough that that I don't thin kthe difference can be credited to the difference between a generic profile a specific camera.
How do the different tools work in the DNG converter? Starting with the Options for "Base Tone Curve"? Is there a document a moderately color geeky person can understand that explains this?
I thin kthe DNG Profile editor is a great and under usedtool. I wish more people knew about it.
Thank you for your time and consideration.

Someone who only eats sausage may not want to know how it's made.  Someone who creates things with food, a chef, a cook, or otherwise is thinking about a career in the food industry, might have a interest in such things.  Someone who is thinking of making sausage will want to know all the details.  Someone who is concerned with the public safety might want to know how sasauge is made.
It would be nice for a sausage maker to give some hints about the process as compared to what each of us can do with the DNG Profile Editor and to the original poster's question, why are our profiles different from Adobe's?
It is my experience that when I create a profile with the DNG Profile Editor, and then compute the color error for each of the 24 color patches of a CC24, using a program like Imatest, some colors are quite a bit off and some are very close, and the colors that are off, are not the same ones that are off when I compute the color error using one of the Adobe Standard or Camera Standard profiles.
Is Adobe using more detailed and sophisticated color targets with hundreds of different colors, or if not, do the tools provide more feedback and allow more manual manipulation of the profile and so the differences are due to their judgement about which colors to make "right" and which ones to let have more error associated with them, that can be manipulated by hand instead of merely letting the DNG Profile Editor apparently distribute the error amongst the various colors with some sort of even-handed calculation.
For example it is easy to imagine that someone tweaking a profile by hand with a live readout of the error of each of the colors plus an overall composite error, might put more emphasis on skin tones being right if they have a background in people photography, or more emphasis on bright colors being right if their experience is in textiles and the current trend in the US is bright colors--and a different emphasis when the trend is muted colors so there is cultrual bias and life-experience coloring a "standard" profile.
In other words, how much of the difference between Adobe and our profiles are due to Adobe having different or better science, and how much of it is due to Adobe have different or better "artists" who decide what colors to make correct compared to others.

  • GT72-2QE Display/Monitor output and colour profile

I recently got the GT72-2QE which has a CMN1735 display panel. My problem is that this is listed as a Generic PnP Device, and when attaching my TV (via HDMI), it's also listed as a Generic PnP device.
I'm using colour profiles (using windows colour management), but both devices are listed as Generic PnP Monitor and the profile is sometimes switched between the two devices. Does anyone else have a similar problem/solution?
I don't really use extended/duplicate displays, only switching, so I thought I'd write a script to enable/disable my HDMI out as and when needed, but when I disable the TV (also listed as a Generic PnP Monitor), both monitors disappear from windows colour profiling.
It's really frustrating, as the panel is so badly calibrated, it needs the colour profile. I've also uploaded it here: <filedropper.com/spydercal> for anyone else if they want it. It was using a Spyder3 with a target of 2.2/6500 (backlight set to 60%). It won't be perfect on everyone's screen, but I'm pretty sure it will get a lot closer.

  • ACR and the Bridge thumb regeneration problem.

I just installed the 8.4 RC version of ACR to see if it fixed a bug that appeared back in version 7.2. It did not.
The bug appears in Bridge where Bridge randomly and repeatedly regenerates thumbnails. The bug is discussed in several threads on the Adobe Bridge forum. It is a difficult and mysterious bug because it appears to effect only a few people (maybe others don't notice). And those affected report different suspected causes.
Everyone in those threads assume the bug is within Bridge. But in my case, I believe the bug is caused by ACR.
In my version of the bug (Bridge CC on Win7) when I point Bridge at a folder of images, the progress wheel in the bottom left corner will spin and report "xxx thumbnail extractions" while xxx counts down. If I leave that folder and return later (with no changes made to the images) it will regenerate thumbnails and count down again. But not for the entire set of images, just some of them. By "return later" I mean 1 second later.
I've saved proir versions of the "Camera Raw.8bi" file. If I use version 7.1.0.354 of Camera Raw, regeneration of thumbnails ceases. Any version greater than 7.1 causes regeneration.
I have a theory, but ask for help or comment on the likelihood of my theory.
When Bridge scans the images in a folder and compares them to the existing thumbnails in the cache, that comparison has to involve dates. If the date of a thumbnail file is different than the date of the image file, Bridge needs to regenerate the thumbnail.
I don't know what dates Bridge is using to compare cached thumbs to images. I'd guess they are what we see as "Date File Modified".
I don't know where Bridge is getting those dates. Is Bridge getting the dates from the Operating System file management service? Has Bridge stored the thumbnail date in the cache index, and compares it to the image date? Because the regeneration comes and goes depending on the version of ACR, it would seem that Bridge is asking ACR for one of the dates.
All programs display dates in human readable form (Example: 7/15/2013 1:11:50PM). But dates are stored in some other form. I don't know what format is used, but it's probably some floating point format.
My theory is that the dates Bridge uses are in stored in different formats or different precisions of floating point. So, when Bridge compares two such dates they sometimes look unequal when in fact they are the same.
Different CPUs with different math chips might behave differently on critical floating point ops. This would explain why some users suffer the problem while others do not, even if they have the same version of OS.
My knowledge of floating point operations dates back to the IBM mainframes of the 70s. I have no idea how modern CPUs work. I'm hoping someone with current knowledge can comment on my theory. Also hoping the theory reaches Adobe techs, who currently appear to be stumped by this problem.

I found a folder of about 60 images, of which about 80% always repeated extractions, even if changing focus to another application for a couple of seconds.
If I batch-toggled Enable Lens Profile Corrections checkbox on every file in the folder, the repeat extractions stopped. If I toggled them back again, it started again.
This didn't surprise me too much, as the pre 7.3 bug, where repeat extractions occured when active Lens Profiles were combined with touching edge crops (fixed in 8.2), was also Lens Profile related.
Unfortunately, I couldn't isolate the combining factor which causes the repeats in combination with 80% of the files in that folder. Totally stumped.
As ssprengel suggests, it might be date/time-related. I did once notice some weirdness with file system timestamps in the Bridge cache folder. Maybe my 'bad' folder had files with a significant date/time.
Meanwhile, I now disable Lens Profile Corrections by default, which is the factory default setting. I only enable it on some shortlisted images. Repeat extractions a greatly reduced now. YMMV

  • Output profile for the web...

Just curious, which output profiles do you use with Aperture? I've loved Aperture, despite it's GA bugs, and it has saved me a loads of time.
One area that has posed a challenge is the profile to use when exporting to jpg. With Photoshop, I could use SRGB and the browser rendering in MS Internet Explorer and Firefox was fairly close. With Aperture, the rendering in Safari is nearly identical to Aperture for me. That's fine when I'm browsing, but most of my audience to my web proofing are not Mac users.
How do you get around this? My output thus far has lacked "pop" in IE & Firefox, but I'm pleased with the output in Safari.

By and large, the internet isn’t color managed. At least our Windows friends don’t have anything like color management. This is the primary reason we send files to the web in sRGB. It’s a best guess/one size fits all color space for windows users with un-color managed browsers.
Safari and IE on the Mac are working correctly in that they can use your display profile and an embedded profile in web graphics to preview the files correctly (as you’d see in say Photoshop and Aperture). But few people want to embed a profile (it adds all of only 4K to the files but that adds up) and again, since so many users are working with browsers that are not ICC aware, the current answer is just output the files in sRGB and pop them untagged on the web.
One problem I find with Safari (well most if not all Apple applications like Preview, Safari etc) is their assumption for untagged files (those without an embedded profile). ICC aware applications have to make some assumption about the color space. On these Mac applications, they assume your display profile which I think is silly. Using sRGB makes more sense.

I then made sure it could get through my firewall and that did not work. So my latest attempt I removed firefox 10 again and uploaded the beta version hoping that would do it and once again nothing. It will not open at all. Please help - is there a live chat or a number to talk to someone at Firefox?

I think when uninstalling you may also have to choose (tick) to delete the preferences and other personal data like the bookmarks, stored passwords etc. to erase completely. If you are installing afresh, please try right-clicking on the file and '''Run as administrator''' to install. And when uninstalling, please also make sure choose to delete all data and also manually delete any '''Mozilla''', '''Mozilla Firefox''' or '''Firefox''' from %appdata%, %localappdata% and %programfiles%. You can open a location by typing for eg. %appdata% in the '''Run''' box (Windows key + R). You may also have to check the '''VirtualStore''' folder in %localappdata%. Files in the VirtualStore can be problematic. I think a clean installation may help.

  • How do I make a VI that contols a 6534 card take less time to load 1Mbyte and output data ?

    Hello-
I'm developing a pattern generation burst mode type VI that reads byte characters from a text file, manipulates the bytes that it reads and then outputs the data from a 6534 card. The REQ1 pin is pulled high which makes the card continually output data until the internal buffer is empty. An internal clock is used. The problem is that the size of the file that is read by the VI can be relatively large, in the 1MByte range. After the VI manipulation, the output array is 16 times larger than the input string. So, when the VI reads a 1MByte text file, the output array contains 16 million entries (each array entry is 3 bits by the way). It takes about 20 seco
nds to run and output data from the 6534 even when reading files that are 200kbyte or so. I'm outputting the data at 5Mbps. I'm not sure where all the delay is coming from. Using the 'Profile VI" function under the 'Tools' menu shows a snapshot of time that really doesn't help me since it only shows that the time is spent in my VI. Is this just the result of loading large files ? Or, is there a way to preload the 1MByte file into the 32MB of RAM on the 6534 card before the VI is actually run. What I mean is that I do have the option in my system to have a time when all text files will somehow be loaded into the 6534 memory, during some initialization period, and then the VI would be run with the text file already loaded. This of course assumes that the delay is loading the file from the harddrive, but since the harddrive transfer speed is fast, I have no idea where to speed things up. Any ideas ? Thanks !

Your question actually belongs to the Measurement Devices >> Digital IO section since it concerns operating the 653x family of digital boards. You will see other related questions and answers there. In the future, please direct your digital questions to that forum.
If you are trying to profile your VI, you can break it into different pieces. For instance, you can make a subVI out of the file data manipulation.
Now, are you doing pattern generation or burst mode handshaking output? From your description of the signal connections, it looks like burst mode. You can double-check in the 653x User Manual at the http://www.ni.com/manuals pages. Still, it looks like you could accomplish your task with pattern generation. There are example VIs for both operations that
I suggest you start with. They are located in the LabVIEW >> Examples >> Daq >> Digital >> 653x.llb directory.
It also sounds like you are doing a single buffered operation, where you have a set amount of data that you want to output, and once done, the VI will stop. You are preloading the data to the buffer at DIO Write.vi before the 6534 actually outputs the data with DIO Start.vi when you program like the examples.
Thus, start with the appropriate example and then add the File I/O to it. You can even test with a smaller file to see the effects. You will also find useful information concerning the 6534 in the KnowledgeBase, particularly KnowledgeBase 298CGF9M "How Many Samples of Data Can I Store in the Onboard Memory of the NI 6534?". You can find this online by going to the http://www.ni.com/support and choosing KnowledgeBase from the Technical Resources pull-down menu. Then, type in keywords to search for, such as "6534".

  • Please assist with modifying this script to read in a list of servers and output results to excel

    Hello,
I have an excellent script written by Brian Wilhite to gather the last logged in user using Powershell.
    http://gallery.technet.microsoft.com/scriptcenter/Get-LastLogon-Determining-283f98ae/view/Discussions#content
My Powershell Fu is stumbling to modify this script to the following requirements:
Currently the script must be loaded first into Powershell, then it can be executed.  I would rather edit the script in my Powershell ISE, add the .txt file to the script itself that gives a list of the servers I need to scan.  Then when I
press Run Script in my ISE it executes.
I would also like to output the results of the file to excel (.xls or .csv will do).  Currently the results look as follows:
    Computer : SVR01
    User : WILHITE\BRIAN
    SID : S-1-5-21-012345678-0123456789-012345678-012345

I would prefer it shows up like so:

Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated.  I'll add the full script to the end of this post.

    Function Get-LastLogon
    <#
    .SYNOPSIS
This function will list the last user logged on or logged in.
    .DESCRIPTION
This function will list the last user logged on or logged in. It will detect if the user is currently logged on
via WMI or the Registry, depending on what version of Windows is running on the target. There is some "guess" work
to determine what Domain the user truly belongs to if run against Vista NON SP1 and below, since the function
is using the profile name initially to detect the user name. It then compares the profile name and the Security
Entries (ACE-SDDL) to see if they are equal to determine Domain and if the profile is loaded via the Registry.
    .PARAMETER ComputerName
A single Computer or an array of computer names. The default is localhost ($env:COMPUTERNAME).
    .PARAMETER FilterSID
Filters a single SID from the results. For use if there is a service account commonly used.
    .PARAMETER WQLFilter
Default WQLFilter defined for the Win32_UserProfile query, it is best to leave this alone, unless you know what
    you are doing.
    Default Value = "NOT SID = 'S-1-5-18' AND NOT SID = 'S-1-5-19' AND NOT SID = 'S-1-5-20'"
    .EXAMPLE
    $Servers = Get-Content "C:\ServerList.txt"
    Get-LastLogon -ComputerName $Servers
This example will return the last logon information from all the servers in the C:\ServerList.txt file.

  • How do I create an xControl with multiple inputs and outputs?

    Hello,
i am trying to write a new Xcontrol Element. In the data model I can create data types using the cluster to create compound types, eg an int and an int array. But how do I create an xcontrol which has multiple data inputs and outputs?
    Kind Regards

    Limping_Twerp wrote:
Alright: I see: An xcontrol is either an input OR an output. How do I achieve an output? Secondly: So you are saying the only Elements that can have multiple inputs and outputs are VIs?
Can you take a few steps back and explain what you are actually trying to do. SubVIs and Xcontrols have nothing in common and it is not clear why you even try to compare them side by side (e.g. in terms of the number of connectors).
Your questions about input or output tell us that you seems to have some misconceptions about xcontrols. Xcontrols are like regular controls, except they have some built-in intelligence that you can program. Most front panel object can be either controls or indicators and the same is true for Xcontrol. You create an Xcontrol, and after placing it on the front panel you can decide if it should be a control (where the code reads the value) or an indicator (were the code writes values to it). When you define the xcontrol facade, you also need to program how the visuals change if it is changed from control to indicator or vice versa.
As a first step, you should opend the example finder and look at some xcontrol examples.
Again, what are you actually trying to do?
