ACR not using .xmp files after 03/09/2011

I'm using ACR 6.4.1.145 and Bridge CS5 on a Windows 7 x64 Pro machine. Canon S95 and G12 CR2 files created before 04/09/2011 behave exactly as they should: changes aved in .xmp files are recognized and applied in Bridge thumbnails and when the image is re-opened in ACR.
Images created on 04/09/2011 and any later date (tested by altering the file dates) have their changes saved in an .xmp file, but this file is not applied to the thumbnail in Bridge, the Bridge thumbnail does not indicate the .xmp file exists, and the .xmp changes are not applied when the image is reopened unless the .xmp file is loaded manually.
I have purged the cache, restarted Bridge, and restarted Windows. I've moved the images to a different directory, then a different drive. I've loaded the images from the SD card several times now. The problem persists.
All assistance appreciated.

Thanks Thomas.
I am pretty sure the CR2 files don't contain any .xmp data. For one thing, the problem only occurs on my installation. If I use another computer, everything works as it should.
The problem has returned, however. I just tried to make changes in ACR to images created today, and although ACR saves the .xmp, it does not recognize it when I open the image again. I have to load the .xmp manually.
I will bet that tomorrow, the problem has gone away. That would make it somehow time/date dependent. More important to you and anyone else trying to help, it seems to happen only on my installation of CS5. Something has gotten corrupted, I think. If the problem persists, I will probably try a re-install, but I hate the patching proces that follows.

If I open a raw file that was adjusted in ACR in PSCS2 with PSCS3 it does not recognize the adjustments that were made to the file.
PSCS3 opens the file in ACR with the default settings and I lose all of the adjustments and crops.
Is anyone else having this problem. If so: is their a fix or a stting I should use?

First. make sure you have updated to Bridge 2.1.0.100.
2nd, Purge the Cache from the TOOLS menu in Bridge.
3rd, Delete and rebuild your Bridge preferences by holding down the Option key (Command+Option, or Command+Option+Shift work as well) immediately after launching the application.
4th, if that doesn't work, make a fresh, new Mac account and log in as a different user.
    Then report back.

  • Local adjustment brush, not in XMP file

Local adjustment brush, not in XMP file
I shoot everything on location and make minor edits while on location. My location edits usually transfer with the XMP file. I used the new local adjustment tool while on location, however when I got back to my main workstation and transferred the images the local adjustments were not there. Can this be fixed somehow, as it would be nice to only make those edits only once? I do not use as a catalog program, once the job is complete it is removed from the lightroom catalog so again those local adjustments are gone.
    Thanks
    Mark

The problem may be and I am only guessing here that because no other program
currently supports the adjustment brush options that that information is not
added to XMP file. Not even Photoshop or ACR supports that as of yet. Though
I honestly would have expected that information to be there anyways it would
just be ignored by programs that don't know what to do with (basically
    everything but LR 2.0).
Have you tried using DNG files. From what I understand an XMP file it not
needed as the information that is normally in a XMP file in kept inside of
the DNG file. This maybe another reason to go with the DNG format.
    Good luck.

I think you can get Windows 7 for around $99. Install the 64bit version as the 32bit version will not be able to use all your new computer's ram if you have more than about 3.5gb.
Back up your quick books data now before the old hard drive dies. You can copy your data over to your new installation of Windows and quick books.
By the way, there is quick books for Mac http://quickbooks.intuit.com/mac/?sc=BNR-000-COR-quickbooks&priorityCode=4902000 000&cid=ppc_google_QB-Intuit-Core-Brand-Mac_quick-books-for-mac_exact&site=&ad_i d=9347918288&raw_keyword=quick%20books%20for%20mac
So you may not need to install Windows at all.

How do I get rid of the Not Using SoftArtisan File UP notice that is slowing down my uploads to class where I teach? A notice now appears every time I upload an image to class as an attachment that says, Not Using SoftArtisan File UP, and this appears to be slowing down my uploads tremendously. I want to get rid of this. I never used it before and don't need it and don't want it. I just want the uploads to work like they did before this idiotic notice started slowing things down.

    Hello,
'''Try Firefox Safe Mode''' to see if the problem goes away. Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode, which disables most add-ons.
''(If you're not using it, switch to the Default theme.)''
    * On Windows you can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the '''Shift''' key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
    * On Mac you can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the '''option''' key while starting Firefox.
    * On Linux you can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by quitting Firefox and then going to your Terminal and running: firefox -safe-mode (you may need to specify the Firefox installation path e.g. /usr/lib/firefox)
    * Or open the Help menu and click on the '''Restart with Add-ons Disabled...''' menu item while Firefox is running.

I have one folder with several projects all of which Aperure can not find the original.  I do not use referenced files.  I can't make any adjustments like cropping etc. What can I do to adjust or print any of these photos?  IO have no ther projects with this problem.  My Aperture Library is automatically saved to two external drives.
    Dick Koos

I have one folder with several projects all of which Aperure can not find the original.
Have you checked inside your Aperture library, if the original files are still there?
Try to find out, when the images in those projects have been originally imported, then open the Aperture library by ctrl-clicking it and using the command "Show package contents" from the pop-up menu. In the window that will open, select the folder "Masters" and browse the contents. You need to find the subfolder with the year you imported the images, then the folders with the month and the day.
Are your original files still there?
If yes, copy them to a folder on your desktop for safe-keeping, and then try, if repairing the permissions and the other Furst Aid tools will help Aperture to connect to these missing files again - see this link:  Repairing and Rebuilding Your Aperture Library: Aperture 3 User Manual
If the First Aid Tools don't help, then check, if Aperture has moved the missing images to a "recovered folder". If not, reimport the images, you saved to your Desktop and use the Lift&Stamp tool to transfer any adjustment and captions to your reimported images.

  • ACR 4.3 .xmp file problem

Would appreciate help on this if anyone has seen the problem.
I use ACR 4.3 on windows XP Pro with CS3, 4 gig ram.
My normal practice is to copy my CF cards to folders on the desktop, then
drag each folder to Bridge to rough select the keepers.
I then open the remaining images in ACR and make further deletions if
    necessary.
When I delete images from the ACR screen, the X appears as normal but the
sidecar.xmp file is not been deleted, only the NEF deletes.
I can't recall having this problem before I upgraded to ACR 4,3 from 4,2.
Perhaps it's a bug or I may have disturbed a setting in the preferences etc
    when I upgraded.
    Any ideas?
    Regards

That's right. And it also can read the updated DNG 1.2 file format. Camera Raw 4.3 cannot; it will read DNG 1.0 and 1.1 only ... or to be more precise, it
    i can
read DNG 1.2 files but only the 1.0 and 1.1 parts of them.
And DNG Converter 4.4 and 4.4.1 will write DNG 1.2 files.

  • Aperture 3.4.5 will not show NEF files after importing in OSx 3.8.5

Hi this is driving me crazy.  I have quite a few NEF files from a Nikon E5000 that I would love to be able to process using Aperture but have run into a rather difficut situation.  When I import my images into Aperture I can see the preview of the files in the browser but can not get them to display after they have been imported.  I have tried importing localy through the internal hard drive on my IMac late 2007 as well as through an external NTFS formated USB backup of my files.  It also chokes on direct imprting from the CF card using a card reader.  In all cases they will sometimes display for a brief second both in the picture browser after importing or on the film strip view but will then disapear and display "unsupported image format" in its place.  I have reinstalled aperture and run both repair persissions through disk utility and the aperture repair utility that ships with aperture.  I have no problems with canon raw files or other file formats - jpg, tiff, png, photoshop, bmp.  Also NEF files will open in lightroom 5 and photoshop cs6 with out issue as well.
Any help in restoring functionility would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks for the time and effort in advance.
    Que Too

    Nikon E5000
Do you mean a NIkon CP 5000 (Coolpix 5000)? Aperture supports many raw formats, but not all, because the raw support  has to be camera specific. Not all NEF files are in the same format - all Nikon cameras will call their raw files NEF.
For some cameras Aperture never included raw support. The currently supported cameras are listed here:
    http://www.apple.com/aperture/specs/raw.html
It looks like your camera is not on this list, so if you want to shoot raw with that camera, develope the raw files using a different raw converter (Adobe's dng converter or the suftware that came with your camera) and import tiff or dng files to Aperture.

  • Signature Scribble field not retaining image file after saving

I have 2 issues with my PDF dynamic file I sent out
         1) The add/remove controls is adding a random amount of extra blank rows upon saving the PDF
         2) The image files selected for the Signature Scribble field is not retaining the image file after saving. It also doesn't give an opportunity to actually draw in a signature.
I even tried to use the Subform Instance Controls Insert/Remove/Move in my table, but I keep receiving the error "You have reached the maximum number of items allowed"
I would appreciate any help you can give me! I have been farting around with this for too long.
    Thanks!

Thanks Pat.  Tried each, restarted computer each time; tried the "Accept" routine several days ago - it worked briefly and then stopped.  Uninstalled Reader and Flash as well.  Strange thing with Flash, one of my online broker programs provides streaming of CNBC.  When I clicked on the CNBC option to initiate CNBC, I got a message saying that I needed to load Flash.  I did, and it loaded again with no mention of Flash having already been installed.
Using Internet Explorer works, as well as, clicking on the .pdf file within Windows Explorer (WE).  Expanding the window in WE makes it large enough to read.  I would still like to find a way to open the files as they are designed to open.
I have done all of the Adobe updates as they have been presented.  Microsoft updates load automatically, and restart my computer in the process.  I do not look to see what the updates have been.  I figure if there was not a need, Microsoft would not make the updates.

  • Bridge CS5 not recognizing xmp files created on CS6?

An employee of mine edited several shoots, using her own computer.  She has CC and used Camera RAW.  I still use CS5 and am trying to process the files she edited (I have the RAW and the xmp files).  Typically, I process these through Bridge.  However, Bridge doesn't seem to recognize her xmp files.  Any ideas on 1. why this is happening, and 2. how I can apply her xmp files when converting the RAW to jpeg?  We are talking about 1500 images.  Thanks!

What camera model is she using?  What camera raw version are you using on your CS5?  Is her camera model supported by your cs5 acr?
Perhaps she could process her raw files+xmp into dng files to pass on to you.

  • "Automatically Write Changes into XMP" Not Saving XMP Files

I tried finding some other discussions on this but I couldn't seem to find anything...
I recently checked the "Automatically Write Changes into XMP" setting in my "Catalog Settings". However, as I continue to add pictures to my library and make changes, I do *not* see the XMP files being written to the location of the pictures (Nikon NEF files located on my hard-drive). In fact, I can't find the XMP files anywhere. If I want to output the XMP files I have to do a Ctrl + S (Photo --> Save Metadata to File).
I did notice that when I unchecked the setting and re-checked it, *some* of the XMP files showed up. However, in my import of 24 photos, only 14 had XMP files. I had to manually "Save Metadata to File" to get the XMP sidecar files to show.
Am I doing something wrong? Is something not working right? I'm a bit confused. I assumed it would automatically export the sidecar files.
How often should it be outputting XMP sidecards? If I import a new image should the XMP sidecar file be created? Or is it created the first time I change an original picture?
I am using Adobe Lightroom 2.0 (Camera Raw 4.5) on a Mac OS X 10.5.5.
    Thanks,
    -Leftquark

@Eric: hitting cntrl+s works but can be tedeous on large galleries. I've been doing this but it can be a pain.
@Jeannine: different topic than this thread but to answer anyways... Lightroom automatically saves all changes into your catalogue. You never need to dave your changes (here's the kicker though) as long as you do not move the original file. If you
move the file than lightroom won't know that it's the same image as the one you've edited. Once you are done editing your image you will need to "export" the image to a new file (you don't wan to overwrite the original). If you don't export than only lightroom will have your edits. Lightroom is "non-destructive" Which means that it doesn't touch your original photo. Lightroom keeps a text file containing the instructions on what you did to make the edited version. Since your changes are just text inatryxtions you have to "export" the image to get your final image in a version you can put online, print, etc. But to answer your original question, I think you prob moves the original image. If not, could you give us more info?

  • LR not writing XMP files in an exisitng catalog

    Hi Folks
My problem is regarding XMP files. I read on a couple of forums that turning on the xmp files is a good idea...... (Automatically write changes into xmp) OK so I thought lets try it....
If I turn this option on in my existing catalog it does not work, no xmp files are written.
I have tried creating a new catalog and importing some RAW files and it seems to work just fine..... xmp files are created as expected.
So is this option only for new catalogs or can I use it on existing catalogs....
    Many thanks in advance
    Regards
    batandball
    My config is the following
    LR 5.7
    Win 8.1

The files that were previously imported prior to the activating the "Auto write to xmp" will have to be updated using the menu bar> Metadata> and selecting the option to write to xmp. (or Ctrl-S)
Be aware that the develop module edits saved as xmp is only useful to an equivalent version of Adobe Camera Raw plugin in Photoshop.

  • Do I need to keep my xmp files after converting my raw files to dng?

I originally set up Lr to automatically build xmp files.  Recently, I decided to go with dng files and have converted all my raw files to dng.  Can I now delete all my xmp files and change my Lr setting so xmp files are no longer automatically produced?

    WDKlein1000 wrote:
I think I've got this straight.  My goal is to keep the xmp data with the image file (embedded into the file in the case of dng files) as well as in the Lr catalog.  I still need to auto (or manually) save xmp files in order for Lr to save the xmp data internally to the dng file.  Right?
    Perfectly right.
    WDKlein1000 wrote:
I've been converting to dng after I have done my initial Lr processing of the raw files and the sidecar files have already been produced.  When I convert to dng, the side car files aren't automatically deleted.
I *think* if you say: do not delete previous raw, it keeps both xmp and original raw files. However, if you say: delete original raws upon conversion, it will delete both raw files and xmp sidecars. In other words, they are treated as a unit. So I suspect your raw files are not being deleted either, right? Note: if this is the case, then whenever you sync your folders, it's gonna wanna pull in all the original raws again. If it were me, rather than deleteing the xmp and leaving the sibling raws, I'd move both to a backup.
    WDKlein1000 wrote:
I wonder if the sidecar files would ever be produced if I imported with the option to convert to dng and then wouldn't ever be editting the raw files?
They would not. If you know you are going to prefer DNG, it seems prudent to convert upon import.
    WDKlein1000 wrote:
I know the sidecar files are relatively small, but I guess it wouldn't hurt to go back and delete them once the xmp data is embeded in the dng files.  Right?
    Right again - delete away...

  • PS4 shuts down... PS4 also adding XMP files after I edit images

So there is another thing going on I have noticed...
When I open PS4 and don't do anything else, it will shut down on it's own after 3 or 4 minutes. All I do is open the program and just wait... Poof-It's gone! (And it's also shutting down on it's own during image edits but i generally get a few more minutes out of it.)
Also-everytime I edit an image, PS4 creates a XMP file that is about 6kbs. So now I have a bunch of extra files that I don't know what to do with. If this is a new feature, I sure would like to know about it.
    I am running XP (sp3) with 2GB RAM. Pentium D 3.00ghz (I am letting PS4 use 640mb of 1686mb available RAM)
Never had these issues with CS.

Hey thanks for the quick reply...
I just downloaded the upgrade but funny... I am on 11.0 (Why didn't they sell me the most recent version since I purchased (and downloaded) the upgrade direct from Adobe a few days ago??)
I will upgrade to the most recent version.
Oh and yes- CS4 is what I meant.
I will check the event logs and see if I can find what happened.
Great link you sent on the sidecar files!! Appreciate your help!!
