ACR Overexposure with Nikon D3
Exposure to the right (ETTR) is a standard technique that requires placing of the image highlights just short of clipping in the raw file. Such exposure is often judged by the histogram or blinking highlights in the camera preview of the image, but is best determined by examining the raw file, since the camera preview is derived from a JPEG image to which the camera settings (white balance, tone curve, etc) have been applied. When one brings the raw file into Camera Raw, the white balance setting is applied, but the other camera settings are ignored. If the ACR histogram shows clipping of the highlights and a negative exposure adjustment is needed to recover them, this usually indicates that the image was overexposed. However, with the D3, the default ACR tone curve places the highlights too high and clipping occurs in the rendered file even when the highlights in the raw file are intact.
I exposed a Stouffer step wedge so that step 1 was just short of clipping with the Nikon D3 using 14 bit NEF and the results are shown in an Imatest plot using the built in DCRaw converter. The results are linear as expected.
http://bjanes.smugmug.com/photos/271579079_BGUhM-O.png
Next, I split off the the green1 channel of the raw file with Iris (a freeware astronomical program)and examined the results in ImageJ (a freeware program from the National Institutes of Health). This plot shows that step 1 is just short of clipping:
http://bjanes.smugmug.com/photos/271460382_RqUdu-O.gif
and this is further confirmed by the histogram:
http://bjanes.smugmug.com/photos/271460379_qwjtR-O.gif
However, when the file is brought into ACR, with the default tone curve, the highlights are clipped as shown:
http://bjanes.smugmug.com/photos/271460363_jMYHL-O.png
and -0.6 EV of exposure compensation is required to bring Step 1 in range:
http://bjanes.smugmug.com/photos/271460357_vDqYZ-O.png
Nikon Capture NX renders the highlights of this file correctly.:
http://bjanes.smugmug.com/photos/271569001_ZJwqX-O.png
The conclusion is that the default ACR tone curve for the D3 is too "hot" and indicates overexposure when none exists.
Next, here is the camera histogram of the properly exposed image. The histogram shows some clipping which is not really present in the raw file and which is eliminated by exposing 0.3 EV less. The conclusion is that the camera histogram is slightly conservative.

http://bjanes.smugmug.com/photos/271460388_WDMpW-O.png
The blinking highlight display is even more conservative and indicates overexposure by 0.6 EV:
http://bjanes.smugmug.com/photos/271460368_iFDsP-O.png
For optimum results with ETTR, it is best to perform your own tests to determine the accuracy of the in camera histogram and blinking highlights so that these aids may be used for optimum exposure. Since the camera tone curve affects the results, it is important to use the same tone curve each time. Furthermore, one should be aware that the ACR default tone curve is too hot and that one does not necessarily have to reduce exposure when a negative exposure compensation is needed to bring the highlights into range. This ACR overexposure has been noted by others, but I do not know if it occurs with all D3s. If so, then the default tone curve should be revised by Adobe.

Lawrence,
> How do you open a DNG that would be different than .nef?
The difference between the native raw and the DNG (in this case created by Adobe's DNG converter) is not in the raw data itself but in the metadata; BaselineExposure is a creature of the converter (and if the converter interprets the raw data this way, then ACR too is doing it this way).
I mentioned the DNG format, because *in the DNG file* (as metadata) the adjustment can be seen *explicitely*, in contrast to ACR's processing, which is lying about it: the "Exposure" slider is at 0, despite having adjusted the intensity. (Note, that ACR does not show the adjustment with DNG either.)
> Are you suggesting that converting a suspicious file having highlight clipping might be saved by converting to DNG?
There is no need to convert the file. The data is not lost - it is the same, as if you process a well-exposed image and adjust "Exposure" by (in this case) 1/2 EV: some pixels may become clipped. You can counter this several ways (beside by resetting the exposure adjustment), for example by Recovery (even though there is nothing to recover here, for nothing was lost in the first place), Contrast, etc.
The issue is not, that ACR woud lose image data, but
1. the auto-adjustment is not justified in this case (it is nonsense, that a Nikon D300's exposure should be adjusted to some imaginary "standard", even if that causes loss of part of the image),
2. it can be destructive if the user is not versed enough,
3. it is not indicated explicitely.

I'm new to the forums so not quite sure how to begin, but here goes.
Recently bought and loaded PSE11. Everything loaded fine except for Camera Raw. No evidence that ACR ever loaded. Went to update and it downloaded and updated to 7.4 (so it said), however when go to “help”, “about plug-ins” it’s not there (also when try to open a Nikon NEF from an old D200 it won’t even show in the files list). Uninstalled and reinstalled, updated raw again and still not there. Here’s my system info from "help".
Have elements 10 with acr and it works fine but need newer version for my newer camera.
Thanks!

Must be the AMD processor, I know there are some other photo programs that don’t run under AMD (Photoshop CS series included). Really too bad…Elements 11 isn’t much good to me unless I can process NEFs from the D5100. Guess I’m stuck with Nikon Capture (or View), making a 16 bit TIFF and loading that into pse11. Kind of a clumsy work around.

RC 8.6 Issues with Nikon D810 NEF RAW files
RC 8.6 does not correctly process Nikon D810 NEF RAW files. See the following blog article for some details:
Nikon D810 vs D800E ISO ComparisonThis is very helpful. My current workflow, until ACR 8.6 and LR fully support the Nikon D810, are to use the DNG converter and import the resulting D810 DNG files into my LR catalog.
I have not yet tried this (traveling right now), but I assume I can still make a custom profile using the X-Rite ColorChecker Passport and it's associated software for my D810 using the RC 8.6 DNG files. This is my normal workflow for all of my other cameras in LR, but the process is direct from native RAW and not DNG (to produce the custom profile).

Until Lightroom gets D810 support, you will need to use the ACR plugin in order to see the profiles. The DNG Converter always uses Adobe Standard, and embeds it into the DNG. Lightroom 5.5 doesn't have the D810 profiles.

Purple and green blotches with Nikon D700 raws
I'm getting some purple and green blotches (mostly purple) with Nikon D700 raws when using the "Camera Standard" profile. This happens a lot during sunset-ish shots. The problem goes away when I select the "Adobe Standard" the profile.
I just tried ACR 6.3 RC and the problem still exists. is this a known issue?
Would be happy to share a raw + screenshots if needed (currently on a relatively low bandwidth connection)
Thanks,
KevinKevin, please try these:

I'm still rather new to Photoshop so I did a little research before posting and I apologize if this question has been answered elsewhere. I currently have Elements 11 and just purchased the new Nikon D750. I cannot open my Raw files from my new camera. Luckily I shoot Raw + Jpg so I can still edit the Jpg's but I prefer to work with the Raw files. I realise that there must be an update to ACR to accomidate or I can use my Nikon software as a temporary work around. I have found that Adobe released CR 8.7 for Photoshop CC and 8.7 RC for Lightroom. My question is: Is there and update yet for Elements, can you use the CR 8.7 for Photoshop CC update with Elements or, are we still waiting?
As Jim has already said you can sue the DNG Converter 8.7 RC to make DNGs from your NEFs and those will open in your older PSE/ACR combo.
The DNG Converter is available, here:
http://labs.adobe.com/downloads/cameraraw8-7.html
Keep in mind that if you touch any of your NEFs with Nikon software that is older than your camera they may be corrupted and won’t work in Adobe software. The accidental corruption can be corrected with the utility, here:

When using the camera downloader in Adobe Bridge CS6 with Nikon D5200 we are unable to see previews of the photos and it is very slow to download. The issue occurs under a the users rights, but not under admin level. This is a new issue.
Hi Jdentremont,
Lync client gets user photos by first querying the Address Book Web Query (ABWQ) service on the server, which is exposed through the Distribution List Expansion web service. The client receives
the image file and then copies it to the user's cache to avoid downloading the image each time it needs to be displayed. The attribute values returned from the query are also stored in the cached Address Book Service entry for the user. The Address Book Service
deletes all cached images every 24 hours, which means that it can take up to 24 hours for new user images to be updated in the cache on the server.
To troubleshoot your problem, please follow the steps below:
1. Navigate to
“X:\share\1-WebServices-1\ABfiles\000000000\000000000” folder. (ABS file share)
You should see some photo files in this folder as the following screenshot.
2. Delete all the files in this folder.
3. On test PC, delete local cache files.
%userprofile%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Office\15.0\Lync\[email protected]
4. Sign-in Lync with the test account.
5. Go back to the ABS file share, check if there is any Photo file in the folder.
Best regards,
Eric

I have been using Aperture 3.3.2 with Mac OS-X 10.7.5. This version doesn't support RAW with Nikon D7100, so I decided to upgrade to 3.4. On downloading, it tells me that in order to upgrade, I need Aperture Version 3, which is what I have. What is one supposed to do??
Have you moved or renamed your Aperture 3 version? If it is not installed in the "Applications" folder or not named simply "Aperture", then Software Update will not recognize it.
Put Aperture back and "Software Update" should find your version.

I can't use The camera connection kit with nikon coolpix s3300
The camera connection kit (USB) doesn't work with Nikon coolpix s3300
The Hero 2 will also nest folders in the DCIM folder and the camera connection kit will read the files in them. Another option to viewing your videos in HD would be to use an app that can play H.264 video, where you will drag and drop the videos in to the iTunes File Sharing under the Apps tab.
If you've never used the File Sharing, simply keep you iPad docked to your computer, select your device, tap on the Apps tab, scroll down past the screen shot of your iPad's home page to File Sharing. In there scroll to the app you're going to share with and tap on it to select it. Then from your computer or straight from your GoPro, select the video(s) and drag them over to iTunes and drop them into the area under Document and you should see the files transfer to the app. When the transfer is done you should be able to see them play in a video app that can play H.264 video, I know the Flex:Player app is one of them. VLC will play 1080p, but not very well. -
Tethered Shooting with Nikon does not save on CF/SD Cards
Has Lightroom 5 now a solution for the tethered shooting with Nikon cameras where no save on the CF/SD cards takes place?
If not, will this covered in the future? An external HDD does not help for the most common image loss during tethered shooting: Transfer problems.
When any transmission problem occurs while shooting and the images are not stored on the memory card, they will be gone. I can't tell you how many images I lost because I had some cable problem while being tethered.
Tethering without a copy on memory card is not a good idea, really. So since the feature is available (otherwise it wouldn't work in digiCamControl, they don't install a new firmware or use super secret camera drivers or anything) I can't understand why Adobe does not support it. -
Will there ever be an upgrade for Lightroom 3 that will work with Nikon d800 NEF files?
Will there ever be an upgrade to Lightroom 3 that will work with Nikon D800 NEF files?
Why not use Lightroom 4 instead?
I mean, assuming you can get it running fast enough, you'll usually get better results with PV2012 - right? And in the cases where you prefer PV2010 (if there are any), it's there too...

Quallity problems with Nikon D2Hs files, example files
Hi,
I converted some Nikon D2Hs NEF files yesturday with Aperture 1.0.1 under OS X 10.4.4.
I got some bad results with funny artefacts. I can't use those.
You can download the results and take a look from my website.
In the light blue part of the small.jpg photo you migth see some red artefacts like lines but in the 400_percent.jpg zoom you can see it even better:
http://www.motivio.de/tmp/small.jpg
http://www.motivio.de/tmp/400_percent.jpg
In these example you can see bad artefacts in the light hole. I also added a conversion out of Nikon capture software to compare:
http://www.motivio.de/tmp/aperture.jpg
http://www.motivio.de/tmp/nikon_capture.jpg
Anybody having similar results with Nikon D2Hs NEF files out of Aperture?
JOAperture made some slight improvements to RAW conversions with the 1.01 release. Ever so slight improvements.
Output from D1X conversions are chock full of artifacts and aliasing.
OK! President's day has come and gone marking the comeplete end to the holidays... so let us have that 1.0?? or 1.?? release!! -
Lightroom changes colour in my RAW files captured with NIKON D300
Dear All! Lightroom changes colour in my RAW files captured with NIKON D300. Some of the images are completely ruined. I am sure Adobe must be aware of this problem. What could be done? Is there a solution? Many thanks for your help. Regards, Stanislav
You want "something different" but this "something different" is quite hard to define.
I want a result which reflects the result on the camera. Have the feeling the display
of the D800 is not the greatest, at least (not only the color issue which is often discussed)
but also the exposure. Often I think I would need to compensate it, but then afterwards
on the computer the non corrected version looks most of the time better.
I think its interesting to see how allergic people react when the word jpeg comes up.
This is also just a rendered result, just by the camera. There are many options in my cam.
I like the vivid setting with some modifications. And that gives me a result I like.
And if I like the result, why shall I spend way more time to replicate it?
I do not talk about that I would want the jpeg, I only say that what I get color wise out of the
box is how I would like to look at it. I still want the capability to fix for example exposure in image,
but I want the base the version I got from the jpeg view (or how the Nikon raw software could do).
On Lightroom I did not manage to have a profile that looked as appealing to me.
It also consumes way more time in my workflow to fix all pictures manually and results might differ.
To work on an image you need a starting point, I do not say the jpeg look is always perfect and
what I want all the time, but most of the time it is.
You say yourself you use profiles. So why should there not be a profile which automatically adjusts to the camera settings.
Its so frustrating to see a look which you like (the preview image when the pic is first accessed) and
then Lightroom switches to its own rendering which is flat and which I do not like.
For me its clearly something Adobe and/or Nikon should fix, like the mentioned "auto correct to preview look",
Nikon profiles/settings/raw-details in Lightroom or for example a Nikon import module. -
Tethered shooting with Nikon D700
Hi all,
I am working on a hardware/software plan to streamline my digital photography workflow. I have been doing some research
on tethered shooting with Nikon and came across this blog post by Scott Kelby. My question is.....do I need to spend the 160.00 on
Nikon's 'Camera Control Pro 2' software on top of the 260.00 for Adobe's 'Lightroom 2' software in order to shoot tethered into Lightroom 2?
Can a person just shoot directly into Lightroom 2?
Are any of you out there shooting tethered into Lightroom 2? Can you expand on the details of your workflow?
Thanks in advance for any input.
Best,
DennisHi
At this stage LR hasn't the ability to tether to a camera without additional software. this is a feature that has been asked for many times. I do not know of any other software that comes close to the functionality of Nikon CC Pro 2 for those on a PC. I use CC Pro 2 with LR 2.4 and a D2Xs and although it may take 5-6 seconds for an image to appear using a watched folder it is a wonderful way to shoot for specific situations such as low light panos or with clients wanting to view your work on-site.
CC Pro 2 allows you to work unobtrusively once you are set up and is particularly good for candids or photography in a public space as people are not put off by the photographer behind the camera. I would suggest a setup like Kelby's or McNally's which uses a Manfrottos accessory arm to place your laptop next to your camera as any other method is a pain if you are moving equipment around. In low light I would close the viewfinder to ensure stray light doesn't affect the exposure.

Michael
