ACR6 and LR2 in anticipation of LR3

Just a quick question. Does this workflow work?
Edit levels, etc of an image in ACR6.0
In LR2.7, click on the arrow in the top right-hand corner of the image to import settings from the xmp file that ACR updated
Then, in LR, edit metadata and export.
What I'm hoping is that when I upgrade to LR3 when it's out of beta, that I will see the metadata adjustments I made in LR2.7 as well as the image edits I made in ACR6. (I would guess that if I adjust eg sharpening in LR after ACR, then I would have problems, but I'm hoping that I will remember to not do that!).

dj_paige     That's an awful lot of work, especially since LR2.7 will not interpret ACR6 edits properly. I don't see the benefit of this.
I believe  dj_paige understands this - he's simply trying to save his metadata edits in LR2.7. I assume he's using PS CS5 for these edits, and wants to import the photos into LR purely for organisational and metadata purposes.
dj_paige     I don't think that you will be able to take work done in LR3 and "revert it back to LR2.7"
By revert, I mean the Lightroom sofware, not the catalog - uninstall LR3, and temporarily re-install LR2.7. You will then have access to the ORIGINAL LR2.7 backup catalog. This process a contingency only, and to be used only if the metadata edits are lost in LR3.

  • PS4 rendering very "hot" compared to Bridge and LR2- HELP I am stuck

Have done all kinds of tests and still get a difference nearly equal to setting the vibrance to +50 and the saturation to +6 in LR2 to somewhat equal the look of the imported image in PS2.
    Here are the facts:
    I have used Bridge to convert the NEFs  into DNGs using Camera Standard for the D700 with no other changes;
Lightroom 2 and Bridge give the same rederings  in terms of colors and relationships of color to each other.  PS4 however, adds lots of yelow, brightens reds and blows highlights.  I have opened the file three ways in PS4, three attempts through Bridge with Save and convert, another time with Save and option click, another time with Open.  All three methods look equally bad.  I have opened the file directly through PS4, not using Bridge.  Just as bad.
Now here is the interesting part:  when I take spot readings for the image in Bridge and the image in PS4, I get the same numbers.
    For example:  R,G,B for Bridge:  232,205,162   PS4:  232,205,163.
    Should look the same, right?
PS4 Color Settings: Prophoto RGB, Gray gamma 2.2,Dot gain 10%,Convert to working profile, ask for mismatch, Engine: Adobe ACE, all other options not checked.
If I desturate monitor colors by about 15% the image looks closer to Bridge and LR2, but is still more yellow. This is not a good solution for printing reasons, however.
PS4 version 11.0.1     Mac OS/X version: 10.5.8  (not using the latest which is SnowLeopard.)
I have sent the query to Adobe Support, but suspect they'll tell me I don't have support and then there is a time lag, also.
Camera Raw: 5.5.097, PS4 11.01,  LR2: 2.5 with Camera Raw 5.5 in the dialog box
WHAT VARIABLE HAS NOT BEEN CHANGED?

Yes, sorry, you did mention that the Zoom has replaced the Netgear. Regardless, if the Zoom is providing the NAT & DHCP services ... which I would assume that it is by default, the AEBSn should be reconfigured as a bridge.
With AEBSn still configured as a bridge, please try the following:
o Power-down the Zoom, AEBSn, and computer(s); wait at least 10-15 minutes.
o While the equipment is powered-down, connect one of your computers directly to any available LAN port on the AEBSn using an Ethernet cable.
o Power-up the Zoom; wait at least 10-15 minutes.
o Power-up (plug-into power) the AEBSn; wait at least 5-10 minutes.
o Power-up the computer connected by Ethernet.
The computer should now be able to gain Internet access. Please post back your results.

  • OSX + Epson 2200 + CS3 and LR2 - help!

    Please help.
I just moved to a Mac Book Pro running Mac OS X 10.5.4 (9E17) and the latest CS3 and LR2. I have used an Epson 2200 successfully for years on my previous Windows machine. I have a color managed system. Now I have several issues on the Mac. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
    My issues:
    1) I see all of my profiles (icc files) in the CS3 Print screen but none are listed in the Epson printer setup screen. Why?
    2) My prints are awful; very magenta and with banding. Something fundamental is set incorrectly. What could it be?
    3) I read about Epson Easy Print but I still have to go into the Epson Printer setup screen from the CS3 or LR2 print screen to, for example, turn off color management. Why?
    4) In LR2 when I go to the Epson Print setup screen and try to select Print Setting or Color Management, they are lined-through and I receive this message: "The bundle Color Management could not be loaded because it does not contain a version for the current architecture". Any ideas on this?
Thanks in advance for your help.
    Dave

Thanks. I already did all of that. A couple of times.
Checking all the sites it looks like there is confusion about what driver I should be using. I did get the latest one from the Epson site. I am confident it is the correct one. But then I read on both the Epson and Apple sites that the OS already has the latest version and not to install another one. So I wacked them all and let the OS do it. Then it installed the Gutenprint driver. And that didn't fix the issue either.
I need to read more about the Open-source printer drivers (CUPS, Gimp-Print, Easy Software Products)that seem to come with OSX.

  • Same images in LR3 and LR2.7?

EDIT:  I just reset Camera Calibration->process back to 2003 from 2010(Current) and I get the speed.
    - Terje
    Hi,
I am one of those that has been struck by the LR3 effect with a slow handling .
I have to do some image prosessing and will use LR 2.7 to get the speed back. I have processed some images in LR3 already. Can there be anything in these images "marked" by LR3 that can give me some kind of conflict when opening them in LR2.7?
I will try of course but wonder if someone has done it and experienced something.

  • Uninstall LR2 after upgrade to LR3 (Windows 7 64-bit)?

I just purchased the online LR3 upgrade and then upgraded LR2 to LR3.
The upgrade seems to have worked just fine, and I am able to open and operate LR3 on my existing catalog.
Apparent problem:  LR2 was not uninstalled, so when I insert media, etc, both LR2 and LR3 show up as possible target applications.
Question: Should I uninstall LR2, or should I just leave it there and ignore it?  I definitely do not need to run the LR2 application, but I also do not want to harm my LR3 installation or existing catalog.  FYI, I did upgrade all of the photos in the LR3 catalog to the new (2010) process.  My machine a Windows 7 64-bit box.
Thanks in advance for any help.

That is normal. Some users may want to retain the older version for a variety of reasons e.g. results comparison, possible problems with new version etc.
You see the same behavior with Photoshop or Creative Suite upgrades.
There can be some gotchas in that instance with file handling preferences for example. It's not been an issue for your circumstance though, by the sound of it.

  • Time Machine and LR2

I just recently learned that when using TIme Machine with LR2 that I'm supposed to set up TM in such a way that it doesn't do any backups while LR2 is open. (By the way, this will not be necessary I'm told, with LR3).
I went into my TM preferences but see no way to make this happen. Does anyone know which menu in TM I should be looking for?
    Thanks.

AFAIK, there isn't a way to make Time Machine ignore the LR catalog ONLY when it is open.
What you can do is prevent Time Machine from backing up files and folders related to LR at any time. This is specified in Options on the TM preferences panel. You may as well specify that TM ignore the whole LR folder since it makes no sense to clutter the TM with LR previews...they can be regenerated at any time.
Use LR's backup facility to create the catalog's backup files on an external drive, or on the TM drive for that matter.

  • Merging Lr2 legacy catalog with LR3 beta into LR3

My Lr3 beta catalog opened without a problem in Lr3 and was established as the default catalog .   My Lr2 legacy catalog was selected thru the by specifying the Lr2 catalog and it was updated successfully to work in LR3.  So either catalog can be used in LR3 just by calling for it when launching the application.
But I would like to have a merged catalog so that I can use LR to do multiyear collections ...like my selects from Paris.  So I created a new MERGED CATALOG and imported the LR3 beta catalog which worked .  Then I repeated the effort with the Lr2 legacy catalog and it bombed after about 10 minutes with no error.
The MERGED CATALOG contained my LR3  .lrcat  and I was adding the Lr2 legacy   .lrcat .   I believe I read that if you have any items in both catalogs it will create an conflict ...like two folders with the same name.
Looking for a way to get around this or at least to easily find the conflict?

I am using a similar process and getting a duplicate photo message and then the process aborts(so you have to watch it happen).   I first create new MERGED folder with one of the catalogs..by (1)creating a new catalog and (2)importing from an existing catalog (images are referenced in place) .   I can do this with either catalog and get a usable new MERGED catalog.
When I try to import the 2nd catalog ..I get a duplicate photograph message .  Unfortunately I don t get a clean way of dealing with it as in your example.
So I believe we have the cause .but the strategy to clean this up looks wicked as I have 50K images in Lr2 and 10K in Lr3 beta.   If I can find them I can remove them from LR2 before I attempt to merge.   I could also have a problem with duplicate file numbers as I use the original camera generated file number (normally not a problem but a new body will start over so duplicates can occur).    Since I can create a new catalog with either LR legacy or Lr3 beta it has to be a conflict between the two.

  • PSE 7 and LR2

I have PSE 7 and online photo back up on photoshop.com.  I just recently purchased Lightroom 2 (LR2) to edit my RAW files and am not certain where to start.
I do not want to store pictures in the seperate locations already established by me on my computer and that which is the "default" storage location for LR2. More spcifically, I keep my PSE pics in an Adobe file on my C drive and LR defaults to the My Pictures file in my documents.
If I copy all of the files/folders from Adobe to a new file in the My Pictures folder for LR how will PSE know where to sync my online album from?
Help please with my work flow.
    Kay Howard

Can I do this with PSE 7?  I read somewhere that later versions of PSE cannot be imported into LR2 using the import tool (I know I can do it manually).  I agree about two organizers.  My overconfident, overinflated opinion of my understanding of said caused me to delete all of my pictures from their current storage location recently.  Thank goodness for Photoshop.com.
Thanks so much for your assistanace.

  • File system and LR2 file system view summary

    Hello,
Is there a way when navigating a directory via the Folders panel to click on the folder and get summary information about the contents of the folder both from a file system perspective as well as a Lightroom perspective?
file system perspective: number of physical files supported by LR2 in the folder
LR2 perspective: the number of files that have virtual copies, how many total virtual copies total, how many photos are in stacks, how many stacks, etc.
    Thanks,

No, you can't specify an entire filesystem as something to cluster. I
suggest using NFS or some shared filesystem and then running a cluster
              off of that.

  • Hi guys, i work as a school photographer and was advised to get lr3 to arrange my packs

    Hi guys,
    i order several pictures of the same images eg a pack = 412x8's 6 7x5's & some smaller images on a 7x5.
I was advised to purchse lr3 to do this but unfortunately i cannot do it my experience with lightroom is very limited i have used cs for most of my photography work up to now.
Does anyone know how i can click on an image in the bar at the bottom then click on a template that i have made then save thse images to a folder containing all different sizes etc.
    cheers
    everyone
    nik

Someone suggested  "use aperture" and while it's fine program, it's Mac-only and that might be an issue.
For Windows-based systems, you should look into a program called "Express Digital Darkroom" -- it's designed especially for event photography and is ideal for putting together different types of packages for things like school photography.

  • Adjustment features and lens fix together?  LR3

When you use the lens fix and change the shape of the image, do the masks of the adjustment tools
reshape too, meaning do those adjustment brush changes, spotting, etc., stick to where they belong on the picture
even when doing a lens fix undistort?  Or does it matter which order to apply the changes?
Thanks; I dont have LR3 yet, but long wanted this feature too.  Adding this feature must have been
    a coding nightmare?

Auto Write does NOT do the same as Command-S. It's supposed to do the same, but since 1.3 this has been consistently broken. In many cases did I apply (via synchronize) settings to say 1000 images and then let LR sitting around, for hours or even overnight, only to find it had written only seemingly random XMP files. You have to go to grid view, select all, and Command-S if you want the files to be written out reliably.
I have posted about that back then when 1.3 came out, and I was told it was a performance feature to make image switching go faster (so that the app would not have to write out the XMP file out immediately, thus blocking). Nothing has changed in 2 years. Go dig up my first posts and you may be able to find the discussion.

  • Dual Monitor (digital vs. analog) and LR2

I have both digital and analog on my video card. Where should I place the
main program on the digital or analog monitor?

    > Where should I place the main program on the digital or analog monitor?
That would depend entirely on the quality of the monitor. Let us know more ... including how you intend to calibrate either (altho today's calib systems can generally do either, but sometimes not both).

  • LR1.4 and LR2 - Rotate and redraws very slow - Quadro issue?

I have recently upgraded to Lightroom 2 on my brand new workstation, having used v1.4 on my old laptop for a while.
The workstation is a Dell Precision, dual quad-core (8 total) Xeon 2.5GHz, 8GB RAM, 15k rpm 300GB SAS disc, and an nVidia Quadro FX 1700, running XP x64 (64bit Lightroom installed).
The laptop was a single core 1.7GHz Pentium M, 2GB RAM, 5400 rpm disc with an ATI 9700 Mobility, running 32bit XP
Now all the CPU intensive activities are dramatically quicker, as I'd expect. Import, export, colour corrections etc are very quick. However, there seems to be a problem redrawing the screen. If I turn on pinstriping for the background colour and choose a new image, it takes a couple of seconds as the pin stripes fill in on one side of the photo and then the other, the drop shadow draws along the bottom, and then the photo slowly fills in from top to bottom. This was fine on my laptop.
Even with pinstriping off the drop shadow and photo draw take about 3/4 of a second to perform. Menus and pop ups don't fade properly, and stick over the top of the photos.
Also, if I try and rotate an image, I click and drag and it takes a good 2 seconds to perform the first rotation amendment, and only updates the image about once a second, making it very difficult to line things up correctly.
I also tested the trial of Lightroom 1.4 on a machine at work, an 8-core 4GB Boxx running XPx64 which also has a Quadro card (3500 I think), and noticed exactly the same issues with the pinstriping behaving slowly, but with colour correction being fast. I then tried 1.4 on my home workstation, and get the same result, so it is a problem in both versions.
Clearly I have left pinstripes off, but still get slow performance switching photos. Has anyone else experienced this?
Is this an issue with 64bit XP? My initial thought was that it must be a video driver issue, as it seems to be only the drawing of screen elements which is slow. A driver issue? An incompatibility with the range of cards? I updated from the installed drivers to the latest ones from nVidia (6.14.11.6996), and this seemed to make the photo a little redraw faster, but has done nothing for the rotate, nor dropshadow nor pinstripes. Is there a recommended driver version for Lightroom?
The result is that Lightroom feels slower to use on my new workstation than a 5 year old laptop.
    Any help gratefully received.

The problem with rotating images remains. It is so slow as to be virtually unusable - slight changes are pretty much impossible to achieve as the feedback is so bad.
I have tried making all the changes to the nVidia settings as described in other posts and there is no difference to performance. I have also updated to the latest graphics drivers. Version 2.1 of Lightroom also makes no difference.
I installed Lightroom on my new laptop, which is a dual 2.1GHz with 2GB RAM, runs Vista32 and has onboard Intel graphics, and the rotate function is fluid and immediate, great to use. So
Does anyone else get this problem? Is anyone else using a Quadro FX 1700? I can find no other mention of this issue on the forums. Any other suggestions gratefully received - I'm getting so frustrated trying to use the software.

  • Power Failure caused all Catalogs and Folders to go Missing,  LR3.4

Running LR 3.4 on a  PC with Vista 32 bit when there was a power failure in the area. I switched off the 'power' to the PC.
When the power was restored I restarted the PC and LR and all the catalogs, folders and files have all gone missing
and LR wants to start importing like it has just been installed. The last time the lrcat was backed up was on 20th June.
Wondering whether there is a more up to date lrcat hidden somewhere in the PC as it is running fine or is there any other
way to recover my last two days' work and restore back to the point just before the power failure?
Appreciate any suggestion before I recover from the 20th June back up.

Jasonized, you are my saviour. I cannot thank you enough for getting me back to where I was just before the power failure. Everything that had gone missing have now been recovered except the enhancements to the last photo that I was working on at during the power failure.  The lrcat file plus the lock and journal files were not in the recycle bin but was somehow saved into my LR V2 backup folder in E: drive !  I systematically searched all my drives and found it there.
This forum rocks !  I am smiling again.
Thank you ! Thank You ! Thank YOU !

  • Should I Avoid LR4 and Get LR3 Because of My Huge Hierarchical Keyword List?

I abandoned LR2 several years ago because it crashed from my hierarchical list of 12,000 keywords. (Botanical and common names and other terms.) I have been using CS5/Camera Raw/Bridge to manage and edit my images. The hierarchical list is necessary for my stock photo business.
I will soon be needing to compare and edit images for a book publication and gallery show and I am thinking I may need to return to LR so I can work more effciently.  I do not care about not exporting some keywords or synonyms etc.  I think (right now anyway) that it is fine that all keywords associated with the images get exported for my stock submissions. I  ususally check off only the sub-keywords or sub-sub-sub keywords.
    Here are my questions:
    1) Is LR 3 able to handle my huge list of hierarchical keywords which is now larger than 12,000 words?
    2) Should I upgrade to LR3 and not to LR4 to avoid the keyword mess I have been reading about but don't understand very well?
    3) Is it possible to even upgrade to LR3 now that LR4 is released?
    3)  Would LR4 handle my keywords better or worse than LR2?  Than LR3?
    4) Is there a work efficiency reason to upgrade to CS6 without using any version of LR and continue using Bridge and Camera Raw as I have been?
    5) Is there anything else I have not thought to ask? I am somewhat technically challenged and dread learning new software, having been burned in the past with ExpressionsMedia disaster and LR2 which crashed etc.
Thanks for any and all input from the forum!

I try to answer your questions. I also have a large list of hierarchical keywords (funny ... also botanical names) but not as much as you have.
    1) I think that Lr3 is able to handle your list of keywords. I have not heard from anybody that there is a limit to the number of keywords that Lr is able to handle.
    2) There seem to be some keyword issues in Lr4. My keywords were perfectly fine in Lr3 but after upgrading to Lr4 some of my keywords were not populated, meaning that the keywords themselves were listed in the keyword list but the image count showed 0. I still have my Lr3 catalog so was able to check (with Lr3) that, indeed, in Lr3 all the keywords in question were populated with the correct number of images. Fortunately there were not too many of these not-populated keywords, so I corrected the issue manually.
Since correct keywords are mandatory for your stock business, you are right in hesitating to upgrade to Lr4. In my opinion, the improvements that Lr4 offers over Lr3 are mainly in areas that are - probably - not so important to a stock business: improvements in the Develop Module and new Process Version, the Book Module, the map Module. On the other hand I would think that image management is paramount for you and in this area Lr4 is not much different than Lr3.
    3) You will not be able to get an upgrade to Lr3 from Adobe now that Lr4 has been released. So you had to find a 3rd party vendor (B&H? Amazon?) who still sells Lr3.
    4) Apart from the issue described above, I don't see any difference in keyword handling between Lr3 and Lr4. Lr2 is too far back for me - I don't remember.
    5) My suggestion for you would be: You have to upgrade at some point. The longer you wait, the more difficult the transition will be because the differences of future versions to Lr2 will become greater. Since at the moment version 4.1 is in the works (there have been two RCs (Release candidates) of version 4.1 already), maybe it would be wise to wait until the final 4.1 version is out. maybe the keyword issues have been fixed.
    6) You can "upgrade" to Lr4 and still have Lr2 on your system. All the Lr versions are stand-alone versions, not "plug-ins" for the previous versions. So you can have two (or more) different Lr versions on your system. So I would suggest that you upgrade to Lr 4.1 (once this version is out) but leave Lr2 on your system. When you Lr4 you will be asked if you want to upgrade your Lr catalog to Lr4 and you have the option of saving the Lr4 catalog as a different file, so that your Lr2 catalog is still available for Lr2 (Lr2 will not be able to work with the Lr4 catalog!). That way, if anything is amiss in Lr4 you can go back to Lr2 and work from there.
