Acrobat 7.1.0 WTF?

Today Acrobat offered me to update from 7.09 to 7.1. I downloaded that updated, installed and...Acrobat did NOT lunch anymore. It just appears in the process list but the aplication wont start :(
EDIT: Acrobat site with updates really sucks, updates can not be downloaded manually...

As far as bugs go, Microsoft releases updates on a weekly or almost daily basis to their OS systems. They have just as buggy software, if not worse. This is an issue with large software products where a lot of time is spent testing and still holes are missed to be fixed later. I have watched as CS majors talk about learning to design software based on the statistical properties of working. There is a whole theory for these phenomena. I am not making excuses, but it is true that there is almost no software written anymore without bugs (even years ago). The biggest problem is the security fixes (AA7.1.0) that are almost impossible to predict since they are related to someone trying to break the software on purpose.
As far as the update, I have almost always been able to get there to do a manual download with no problem, and I never to auto updates through the software. If you think the page is so bad, I am sure Adobe would be glad to have you help fix it! I am perfectly happy with it myself.

  • Acrobat Pro X Opens Every Document Directly to Page 2. WTF?????

Hello. I updated to Acrobat Pro X and now when I try to open a PDF file from a link on my website, it automatically opens every document starting on Page 2, instead of Page 1 as I have set in "Properties"
When I open the documents independent of the web browser, they open directly to Page 1, as specified.
    What gives?
    Anyone else having this problem?
I think I might punch Adobe Acrobat right in its face as my customers are going to open the docs on my site and go "WTF????????!?!?!!?!?!?!?!?!?!!" and then poop their pants.
    What to do?

I was having a similar problem, but only when viewing PDFs that were set to "fit page", and only when viewing in the browser.  "Fit width" PDFs worked fine.
I am running Pro 9 but made the mistake of installing Reader X.  (This could explain why PDFs opened locally were fine, but those opened in a browser are not.)
I finally uninstalled Reader X.  PDFs now open to page 1 properly.  Strangely, I didn't have to reinstall Reader 9... I guess it's now using Pro 9 to view in the browser?
Not sure if this is a bug in Reader/Pro X or just a problem with having different versions of Reader and Pro on the same machine, but I thought I'd at least add a "me too" to the topic.

  • Acrobat Reader, WTF?!?!?!?!??!?!?!??!

Why doesn't Acrobat Reader work with windows 7? I have been fighting this issue for over a year now and for awhile I just gave up and had to use friend's computers to read files I needed. NOW ENOUGH IS ENOUGH! I want this problem fixed!
The installation starts and gets to 76%, stalls and then I get the error message !There was and error installing Adobe Reader/ Fatal error during installation.
    Stats of my system:
    Windows 7 64-bit
    16gb of ram
120gb ssd (for os and other minor programs) and a 1tb hdd
    2x gtx560ti's in sli
I use Internet Explorer 11.0.15 as my main connection to the internet
and I use Google Chrome because some morons think it is better and only use it for their websites or to send content
And before you say anything, nope I have never had an issue with IE since I had first used it in the late 80's early 90's. I will not use Mozilla (it blocks half the websites on the internet including state sites, job search sites and various other "safe" sites, so you can keep your Mozilla)
YES I HAVE TRIED EVERYTHING IN THE HELP AND SUPPORT SECTIONS ON THE ADOBE SITE INCLUDING THESE FORUMS. Not only have I tried them all I have tried them all several times each. So now lets see if someone can help me with my issue and why I am having these issues. AND NO I WILL NOT TRY THE STEPS I HAVE TRIED ALREADY. IF THE DIDN'T WORK THE FIRST 3 TIME I TRIED THEM THEY ARE NOT GOING TO WORK NOW. So we are going to need a real solution.

This is a User2User forum not Adobe Support. Since this is your first post about this is long running issue, please try to patient.
    What version or Adobe Reader?
Do you have any other Adobe products installed?
Make sure you uninstall all old versions of Adobe Reader and Adobe Acrobat.

  • Could not find application that created this file error in Acrobat

What is going on? I have an InDesign file that I want to convert by opening Acrobat and then converting to PDF. I am getting the error "Could not find application that created this file. [file name] Please select a file created by an application that resides on your computer."
I most often use this functionality when I have multiple files of different origins and need to combine them into one document. Now I'm reading the forums and some are saying this functionality is no longer supported by Acrobat. Pardon my language, but WTF?!?! This is functionality that is commonly used by me and I can only assume other users. Now you have two Adobe products that won't communicate? If so, then all the hoopla stating how great the Adobe suite is should be edited. I have never seen these products take such a step backward!
Sorry for the rant, but I find this to be ridiculous. What is the workaround, besides converting every document to PDF inside its own software and then combing the PDFs?

InDesign uses a different method of making PDF files when you use the File->Export option in InDesign (even with Acrobat installed, it uses an internal copy of the PDF Library engine). As such, the two applications do not communicate directly with each other.
Support for driving the PDF conversion process from within Acrobat has been removed from Acrobat X, beacuse with the new features in InDesign CS4+, Acrobat doesn't have access to the settings it needs to control things such as multimedia, spreads and transitions. ID CS5 divides PDFs into two concepts - "print" and "interactive", neither of which match the presets used by Distiller. Creating PDFs from InDesign files must therefore take place from within InDesign itself.

  • Experience Scanning with Acrobat 9 on a Mac

Friends asked for a copy of a 4-page document we'd used in a study group.  I'll just scan it in with Acrobat!  Then we have the benefits of its being electronic.  Plus it'll give me a chance to try out Acrobat 9, which I just got, and scanning on my Mac (on Windows until recently).
Why it took me an hour to scan the document:
Acrobat can assemble a PDF file from scanned pages and OCR it.  I'll just scan in this four page doc and send it out as PDF.  Simple, right?
Bring up the Acrobat panel to Create PDF From Scanner, and it says to select a scanner.  There are none on the list.  Hmm.
When I set up my Mac a few weeks ago I tested and was able to scan.  Maybe it's because my printer/scanner is now plugged in via TimeCapsule rather than directly as before.  Can my Mac see it?  How do I know?  Can it see the printer device--perhaps both printer and scanner don't come online at the same time.  Bring up Sys Prefs, it shows a green light by the TimeCapsule-connected printer.  Ah, but it did that yesterday even though it could NOT print to it.  Bring up the Print Queue for that printer and click Utility.   ...scanning for printers...found none.  Do I believe that?  Try printing to it.  It works.  Finding none doesn't mean it isn't working.
Try plugging the printer/scanner directly into the Mac.  No difference.
Follow the "maybe scan is different from printing" thought.  Where is the System Prefs for Scan/Fax?  Doesn't seem to be one.  Maybe it's just TWAIN drivers.  How was it I tested scanning initially?  Search [Finder] for scanner.  Nothing obvious.  Futz around a bit.  Ah, it was Image Capture.
Image Capture CAN see the scanner.  So I could scan in by hand to separate files and assemble in Acrobat.  Sure would be easier if Acrobat had control of the scanner as it [presumably] knows more about what it needs re scan settings.  Search Internet for problem.  Aha, found it on the third hit.  The Epson TWAIN (scan) driver must not be Universal binary.  Acrobat sees only Mac Universal binaries.
Check Adobe documentation to see if there's a way around this.  None found.  They don't even acknowledge the Universal binary requirement when talking about Mac.
So, scan separate pages using Image Capture.  Ahh.  The document's printed on really thin paper so type from the back side is bleeding through, badly.  How can I adjust the contrast on the scanner to compensate?  Nothing obvious.  What if I tell Image Capture it's Text?  No, that just seems to change Bit Depth to 1.  Changing it back to 8 causes the Document type to be Photo.  Well, at least there's a setting for B&W Photo.
Scan to TIFF files (the default).  Go into Acrobat and create a PDF from the four TIFFs.  Run OCR.  Hmm.  Still looks awful because of bleed through in image--OCR just adds invisible (selectable, searchable) text on top, without discarding image--and file size is rather large.  It's good enough, but now I'm curious as I've had better results with this in the past with Acrobat 8 on Windows, though it's been so long I can't remember exactly how.
Back to the Internet to read about OCR in Acrobat 9.  Ahh.  I think they phased out the previous method I used and replaced it with "ClearScan", a new technology which creates Type 3 approximation fonts on the fly and places those visible on top with the scanned image, greatly compressed (and de-skewed) underneath.  They recommend scanning at 300 dpi (I'd used whatever the default was, 150 I think).
OK.  Try scanning again.  Set to 300 dpi.  Hmm.  Must be SOME way to change the contrast to correct the bleed through.  Ahh.  It's set to "Image Correction: None".  I'd missed that before--my bad.  Try "Manual".  I get a control panel.  No contrast but I can affect brightness separately in Dark, Midtones, and Light.  Turning up Light does it.  Scan all the pages again.  Bleed through is gone (as seen in Preview windows that pop up).
Go into Acrobat and recreate the PDF from the TIFFs.  Well, it won't let me see the files.  I scanned them into /tmp.  (I've set up a symlink of /tmp to /FinderVisibleRoot/tmp (along with other hidden / dirs).)  tmp is greyed out though not others in that dir.  Futz around a bit trying other operations which open a file panel, come back, and now tmp's not greyed out.  Sigh.
Create the PDF from the TIFFs.  Looks exactly like before, bleed through and all.  WTF?  Check the TIFFs in Preview--as expected; no bleed through.  Perhaps something got cached.  Close and restart Acrobat and try again.  Same result.
The Image Capture adjustment to Brightness must not have changed the actual scan but some meta data stored in the TIFF. ??
Where can I tell Acrobat to honor that?  There are no options when I open files to be combined to create the PDF.  "Try again, Luke."   Nope.
Let's try just one file at a time with Create PDF From File.  Same problem.  The files panel for opening those files DOES have a Settings... button, but it's greyed out.  It's set to "All Types", which includes TIFF.  What if I change it to just TIFF?  AHA!!  Now the Settings... button is active.  Not obvious to me (I get why, given multiple types could be selected, but my gosh).
Now I can control how Acrobat changes the incoming TIFFs (I'm guessing PDF doesn't support TIFF directly so converts to JPEG, CCITT, etc.).  Not exactly sure how conversion works so futz with a few of what I imagine are the obvious options.  No effect.  Hmm.
Ah.  Maybe Image Capture (or the driver) is actually creating a color profile to affect the image adjustments I made, and embedding that in the TIFF.  Can color profiles be put in TIFFs?  I didn't think so.  Turns out they can.  And retaining embedded profiles was turned on in the conversion settings by default for all image types EXCEPT greyscale. :-)  Turn it on for greyscale and try again.  Voila!
OK.  Go back to Merge Files Into Single PDF to do all the pages.  Oops.  There's no Settings... option where I can tell it to keep the embedded profiles.  Sigh.  Use Create PDF From File for each page then merge those.
Now run OCR with ClearScan on the resulting PDF, and keep only very low resolution of original scan.  Result is a small (196K for 4 pg), clean looking, fully searchable document!
The on-the-fly Type 3 fonts it created aren't great (flaws visible when zoomed).  I think an older technology we had at Adobe of trying to match scanned chars to available fonts stands a better chance for high fidelity (and this may still be avail in a non-ClearScan option).  However, I still like the new ClearScan technology for some uses like this, where fidelity isn't such an issue.
Hopefully, the Universal binary problem on Mac with Acrobat will go away at some point (when I get a new printer? ) so I'll just be able to scan directly into PDF.  And Adobe will need to add Settings for Merge Files Into A Single PDF to control color profile handling, etc.
Thanks to all the Adobe forum folk whose posts informed me for this task.
    --Dan

When I posted the message, it showed me "More Like This" with some relevant threads.  Relevance was pretty cool.
I read there are Acrobat app-wide conversion settings for importing different file types.  If I set Preferences/Convert To PDF/TIFF settings, it affects files specified to Merge Files Into A Single PDF.  It's still inconsistent that I specify it one way for Create PDF From File and another for Merge Files Into A Single PDF, but at least it can be done.

  • Edit Form in Acrobat Pro 9.4.2

I have a form I created in an earlier version of Acrobat about 12 months ago. I've now been called upon to edit this same form and, surprise surprise, I can no longer edit it.
There are no security settings in place in the file.
Where before I had the option to edit or add fields via the Form menu, this doesn't seem to be available anymore. There's this nifty (note the sarcasm) little Form Wizard which doesn't like this file at all.
From what I'm reading, I'm not seeing any way that I can fix this, short of redesigning the form and creating everything from scratch and hope it works, using some Adobe online form thingy or switching to some form designer thing that comes with the PC version of Acrobat.
    Any suggestions?
I love Adobe's stuff as a general rule but I'm not loving this. I'm also not loving the whole upgrade thing - can't upgrade Acrobat in CS5 because it isn't a stand alone product. But you're welcome to buy a whole new copy of it! Wtf? And while I'm ranting, what the hell is up with the difference in upgrade price between Australia and the US? The AU dollar is almost at parity and has been for ages and yet if I was stupid enough to upgrade to Pro X it would cost me over a $100 more to buy it in Australia, even if it's a digital download. This sucks so bad and I hate that we get screwed over down here with stuff like this. How can it cost more for the same product with no actual physical product supplied?
And if I have to upgrade to get my form sorted then I think I'm gonna start looking back at Quark and any other alternative. All the things that we hated about Quark is exactly what Adobe has turned into.

Yeah, I know, but what can you do? Can only try and describe as fully as possible what the problem is and hope for the best!

  • Bought Acrobat Inter Eng Ver, but always install to be NorthAmerica Ver, Can't use the code to register

I bought a CS6 Design and Web Premium, which includes Acrobat 10.0. First I installed them well, but with the update of Acrobat 10, the Acrobat became no response. So I uninstalled the Acrobat and Installed it again, but when it was installed, it always went to NorthAmerica Ver., I indeed selected the Inter Eng Ver. however. Hence it always says my code is not for this product, which drived me crazy.

Your sig says XPS. I assume that means XP. Your permissions must be corrupt in the registry, even though you are on an admin account. I got this same error when I upgraded my laptop to XP SP3. I had to run a tool from microsoft to fix it.

I upgraded to Acrobat X yesterday and now my combine/create pdf function is online. TWO big problems…the first is I printed three excel sheets to adobe pdf.  When I use the "new add files" side bar thing, the three pdf do not appear as supported documents (wtf?)…second, after going on line it appears I’ll now have to pay for this?????
I guess it is time to back to primo pdf.  Not a move I want to make...I'm an Adobian at heart.
    Mark Fuqua

    Hi Mark,
Oh gosh, I'm mortified: of course the part of your question regarding online PDF creation is relevant to the CreatePDF online service. I apologize for misreading your posting. However, just to get the nomenclature straight, Adobe Reader never allowed for combining files, or even creating them; yes, you could save them, or even fill in a PDF form, but not create or combine them. This has always been the case with Reader. If, however, you were using Adobe Acrobat (and based on your description, it sounds like you were), this functionality would certainly have been available, and continues to be available in Acrobat X. Is it possible that you're currently using Adobe Reader to do something for which you used to use Adobe Acrobat? If you upgraded Adobe Acrobat, you'd know it, as it would have required you to make a payment to the Adobe store.
Whew. Okay. So that's the desktop portion. As to creating PDF files online, it's certainly available to you as an option (either with Acrobat.com or with CreatePDF). If you have Adobe Acrobat, you should be able to create PDF files from your desktop; if you only have Reader, it won't be possible to create PDF files with that software, and therefore if you attempted to do so, you may have been led to the CreatePDF webpage (http://createpdf.acrobat.com). Furthermore, if you tried to create a PDF file from an existing PDF file, you may have encountered the error message you reported ("not a recognized file type"?).
Please feel free to correct me on any part of this hypothesis, but for now I recommend locating on your computer the various kinds of Adobe software you have installed (Adobe Reader and Adobe Acrobat). If you have both, then you can go back to using Acrobat for your file conversions. Let me know what you discover, and we'll take it from there if necessary!
    Thank you, Mark!

  • Object Stacking Order in Acrobat 8

I don't know if this is some sort of bug or if I'm just really stupid, but I was working on adding alt text to some figures in my Acrobat document and I saved and closed it. When I reopened it, it had changed the stacking order of some of my objects.. for example I have some logos that appear above a semi-transparent oval and after opening the file again it's now sitting behind the oval. I've searched through ever ******* control bar and what not I can find on Acrobat but I can't find anything like "move backwards" or "move forwards" like there is in InDesign and Illustrator.
What on earth is going on?

HA! I thought I was being smart and opening the PDF in Illustrator so that I could move the layers back... of course then I lost my reading order and my alt tags bringing me back to square one.
WTF? This really shouldn't be this complicated.

I have had other issues, harder to quantify or describe, but it seems as if this update broke a few things.

I am a USA customer using usa English. I have downloaded the Acro XI Pro install package three times from Adobe,  both after purchase (which seems to be one separate download process) and as a trial download using the Adobe download install program.. Different sites, different methods. Installed manually twicw, allowed the Adobe downloader to install twice and installed on two different computers. Eash time, the opening sequence and various other pages/windows are in Swedish, not English. During the installation process, English is chosen every time.. These Swedish screens include various web links in Swedish as well as "local" screens. I have ten screen shots of the Swedish screens. I spent 2 hours with tech support, tried a variety of fixes, including repair.modify, uninstall re-install, and uninstall and re-downlaod, install: all to no avail. WTF?

  • Filename in XFDF - Acrobat 9?

While submitting the PDF form field data, do we have to manually add the 'f href' element in the XFDF when running on Acrobat 9? Or, is it the acrobat javascript method 'submitForm' which generates the XFDF with field names and 'f href' ?
Please let me know asap. In my project, its observed that 'f href' element (i.e. filename) is missing in the XFDF retrieved in Acrobat 9.
    Thanks.

Just revisiting on this topic and hoping for some assistance.
We are currently generating .xfdf xml form files and they are using <f href=filename.pdf>
This works fine when superimposing the data in the form onto PDF's using Adobe Reader 8 and lower but with version 9, when the client opens the .xfdf file the .pdf file for the form does not load for the aforementioned reason in the previous posts and therefore the user cannot view the document with the XML data superimposed on the PDF.
I would prefer not to have to roll users back to Adobe Reader version 8 to make these forms work so I was wondering, can the code eg. <f href=filename.pdf> be changed to be compatible with Adobe Reader 9 as well as backwards compatible with versions 8 and lower and so forth. If this can be done, how does the link need to be coded?
    Thanks in advance
