Acrobat 8.1.3 installed.  Cannot open Reader 9

I am trying to open a tax form online that requires Reader 9. I've got Acrobat 8.1.3 installed. I've also installed reader 9, but the form reports that the version is 8.1.3 and asks me to update again. When I try to open Reader 9 from the start menu, Acrobat 8.1.3 opens.
This is on a work PC (XP SP3) so I probably have a commercial license and I can't uninstall or upgrade Acrobat. How can I force the document to open in Reader instead of Acrobat?

I just wrote this up on another thread. see if this helps you and matches your environment

    Hi,
If the DISPLAY is set properly and you still get the same error, then I would suggest you download the latest RapidWiz version (Patch 7308107 - Rapid Install 12.0.4.9).
I am installaing it in a vm ware image by connecting an External HDD of 1 TB to a laptop with 2 GB RAM, do you advise me to try installing it on a desktop with higher configuration ? IT has close to 270 GB of free space. With this configuration, you should be to install 12.0.4 directly on the laptop.
For 12.0.4, the total space required for a standard system (not including the stage area) is 73 GB for a fresh install with a production database, and 161 GB for a fresh install with a Vision Demo database.
For the stage area, you need at least 33 GB to accommodate the file system and database files in the stage area.

my account is active and paying per month for Acrobat Pro. Why I cannot open files and the screen asks for serial number?

I don't work for Adobe but it seems to me you might be signing in to Acrobat with the wrong Adobe ID.
Check the Adobe ID you use in Acrobat.
Check this Adobe ID on Adobe's to make sure that it has an active subscription.

    Hi TheMom1999,
Do you mean that you are unable to open the pdf files via Reader?
Which OS are you using? Have you updated Reader o v. 11.0.7 and checked?
Was it working fine for you before?

  • Cannot open Reader 80. or uninstall or re-install over existinge 8.0

Here's the window message I get when I try to open Reader 8.0, "Problem with Shortcut" Then in the window, "This patch package could not be opened. Verify that the patch package exists and that you can access it, if not contact..."
I get the same message when I try to uninstall through Add or Remove Programs in XP Pro.
When I try to download it over the existing install I get a message telling me "Adobe Reader 8.1.2", "Error 1714. The older version of 8.1.2 cannot be removed. Contact your technical support group."
    Please help.

Follow the advice of "expert user"!
I have just gone through the same problem of uninstalling reader in order to re-install it. The MS Windows Installer Cleanup Utility worked perfectly. Other attempts manually removing as suggested in Adobe's kb400769 had already failed.

  • Windows XP cannot open Reader

I have a problem that started about a month ago.  Everytime I try to open a PDF in Adobe Reader (9 or 10) or if I just try to open up the reader alone, Windows XP SP3 gives me one of 2 error messages...
    1.  Windows cannot access the specified device, path or file.  You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item.
    2. The application has failed to start because the application configuration is incorrect.  Reinstalling the application may fix the problem.
So today I decided to repair the install.  That did not fix the problem.
The next thing I decided to do was to uninstall Adobe reader 9 and do a fresh install o fthe latest version, 10.
As soon as installation completed I was able to open up one PDF file.  After I closed it and tried opening up Adobe Reader 10 alone or anopther PDF (or even that same PDF), I got the same errors above.
So unistalling and reinstalling Reader did not fix the problem either.  I still have the same exact problem as when I had reader 9 installed.
I tried searching Adobe support and forums for these errors and I cannot find anything at all, which I find rather odd.  Even a google search turns up nothing for me.
Can someone please help me to figure out what is wrong and how to fix it?
    Thanks in advance.

130+ views on this thread and not one reply?
Surely I am not the only one with this problem.  Yet, I cannot find any other similar threads that have working solutions.  I already tried repairing the install and then reinstalling.  I also do not have Acrobat installed, just the reader.
I have also come across many other threads that are somewhat similar to mine and those threads never received any replies, which is very disappointing because I figured this is the best place to start for help on an adobe product.  Please don't prove me wrong Adobe!
Can I please get some help?

  • Cannot open Reader program, no error messages (Windows XP, SP3)

Hello all! I am hoping someone can provide a solution to my frustration....
Earlier this summer I was having some computer trouble. The computer was under warranty - HP came out and changed the memory and system board.
I have not been having any issues except for ONE thing - I cannot open Adobe Reader to view PDF files. Any PDF files on my system show the Adobe icon, but when clicking on a PDF file or the application itself, nothing happens. The hourly glass shows up briefly and then goes away, but otherwise, nothing.
Temporarily, I got by using another PDF reader. Unfortunately, some of our business systems only work with Adobe, so getting Adobe to work is now critical.
What I have tried (with no luck):
    1) Uninstalled Reader, did a system search to remove all Reader files, re-installed latest version
    2) Searched the Adobe community and other internet sites for help - tried a Microsoft fix, Adobe cleaner program, went into the Program Files menu to accept the user agreement, etc.
    3) Installed earlier verions (9.5, and then 7.0)
Any other ideas? I called back HP, and they tried to be helpful but said it was a software issues since all other programs were running successfully. They suggested I re-install the operating system!
    Thank you for your help.
    -Marcus

  • Mavericks cannot open/read RAW files

Just upgraded to new MacBook Air with Mavericks. Moved my photo library over, and cannot read any of my RAW photo files (neither Canon CR2 nor Nikon NEF).
System is up to date, including latest Digital Camera Raw Compatibility Update (5.04). Based on several posts I found, I already tried to remove the Camera Raw Update and install older versions, restarting the machine. No change.
OS (Mavericks) does not open/read the files with either Preview or Quicklook - shows a black background. Applications don't open/read them either (tried both Aperture - which says "unsupported image format" despite rebuilding the library and trying all other things - and iPhoto - which also just shows a black background image), but since Preview doesn't even work, it's clearly an OS problem.
I'm very frustrated... Most grateful for any suggestions.

btw - i also seem to be missing the "Raw.plist" file. does anyone know where it is? it used to be under "/System/Library/CoreServices/RawCamera.bundle/Contents/Resources/Raw.plist" but it's no longer there. I imagine this may be related.

  • Cannot open reader 10.1.3

I cannot open the reader....everytime it starts to open I get "Adobe has stopped working" I have installed and unistalled several times, still the same thing. I'm running windows 7....can anyone help?

    Hi dpete3,
Do you have any plug-in installed for Adobe Reader?
If yes, please try the following:
    1. Uninstall Adobe Reader and delete the following folders if they are present:
              - c:\Program Files\Adobe\Reader 10.0
              - c:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\ARM
    2. Then install Reader again from : http://get.adobe.com/reader/
If this doesn't help, then go to-> C:\Program Files\Adobe\Reader 10.0\Reader, Right click on Reader.exe and then click "Run as Administrator".
Also which antivirus are you using and is your windows 64-bit?
Are you able to other files like excel, doc files?

  • Acrobat 9 on Windows 7 - cannot open

At work we have a number of users running Windows 7 Pro x86 and Acrobat 9 Standard.  Within the past two weeks I've had 3 users running this setup complain to me that they've been periodically seeing an issue where they cannot open a PDF file.  After examining the situation I find that there are multiple instances of Acrobat hung up in the background.  Once I kill all of these instances  via Task Manager, I can open Acrobat just fine.
I'm wondering if the most recent Acrobat update (9.3.2) could possibly be causing this issue?

    Hey jeroenb16613921,
Please specify exactly when you get this white popup screen. While opening a PDF or launching Acrobat by double-clicking on the Acrobat icon.
If it comes when opening a PDF, then where is this PDF actually stored?
Let me know more on the same so that I can analyze the issue.

  • Cannot open Reader

I've tried to download both the XI and the 9.5 versions of Reader and I continually get an error message; "Adobe Reader has encountered a problem and needs to close", when I try to open the program. I have Windows XP - SP3 on my computer and I cannot find any other versions of Acrobat/Reader on my computer. I've tried the "Change" tab on the "Add/Remove" software on the Control Panel, doesn't help!! I've also unistalled both several times and rebooted my computer, still no luck, HELP!!!

Download the Adobe Cleaner here: http://labs.adobe.com/downloads/acrobatcleaner.html
Download the FULL installer here: http://get.adobe.com/reader/enterprise/
    Save the files.
    Close your browser.
Run the Cleaner to completely remove Reader.
Then run the full installer to replace it.

  • Cannot open Reader on Ipad

I've been having problems with  the AR app on my IPad - the first I've ever had. In the last few days I've tried to open the app but all I get is a blank page - a gray column on the left and a white space on the right, nothing more. I've tried deleting and re-installing AR but to no avail. I have not updated to iOS 8 yet. What's worse, nothing seems to have been backed up to iCloud. Any insight would be most helpful, thanks!

    cv67,
Does Adobe Reader for iOS disappear after a while or just sit there displaying the "blank page" permanently?
Is your iPad a "Wi-Fi only" or "Wi-Fi + Cellular" model?
We have heard of some Wi-Fi connectivity issues from the users with the "Wi-Fi + Cellular" model and iOS 8 (but not iOS 7).
I've tried opening PDF documents online...
Do you first open a PDF document in Safari on your iPad then choose "Open In" to open it in Adobe Reader for iOS?
I tried the following steps on my iPad.
Open the following PDF document (which is relatively small in file size) in Safari.
    http://www.adobe.com/content/dam/Adobe/en/products/creativecloud/cc/pdfs/cc-enterprise-ove rview-ue.pdf
Tap "Open In" and select Adobe Reader for iOS.
It opened successfully in Adobe Reader for iOS version 11.6.4 for me.  I used an iPad 2 (Wi-Fi only, no Cellular) running iOS 7.1.2.
Could you try opening the PDF document above to see if it works for you?  You can also try opening it in iBooks instead.  (The result will tell you if the problem happens only with Adobe Reader for iOS or not.) The PDF document that you are trying to open may be too large or your Internet connection via WiFi/Cellular may be too slow.
Unfortunately, it is hard to diagnose the problem because I cannot take a look at your iPad in person.  Your help and patience would be appreciated.
Here are a couple of things that you could try.
Turn Settings > Wi-Fi off and on.
Reset or restart your iPad. See Restart or reset your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support
Terminate the Adobe Reader app by pressing the home button twice and swipe up the app.  Then launch it again to see if it starts without opening a PDF document.
Download your PDF document on a Mac or Windows computer, transfer the PDF document to your iPad using iTunes, and open it in Adobe Reader for iOS.
See the "How to transfer PDF documents from your computer to your iPad/iPhone" section in How to backup and restore PDF documents on your iPad/iPhone using iTunes
The last option is obviously not a feasible solution for a long term.  There is another option for "Reset Network Settings", if you suspect that your problem is caused by bad Internet connectivity.  But it is rather time-consuming to re-enter network configuration information.  So let's leave it as the last resort.
Please let us know if any of the above works for you.
Lastly, regarding your iCloud backup problem, is it configured to back up automatically?
iCloud: Back up your iOS device to iCloud
iCloud - Backup - Apple Support
It is an Apple issue, if iCloud backup is not working.
Please note that if you uninstall any iOS app, the associated app data (local files, preferences, etc. that are locally stored on your iPad) will be erased by iOS.  You can restore everything (including app data) from iCloud if you have made a backup automatically or manually before.

  • Acrobat 9.0 Network install not removing reader or supressing license

I am running a network install created by the customization wizard of Acrobat 9. In the wizard I told it to remove all versions of reader and Acrobat and suppress the user agreement. The program installs but users have to agree ULA, and reader 7 is still there and default.
It seems as though the MST is not being read during the install process. I have checked the setup.ini and it is pointing at the correct MST file. I have also used this same install in other remote offices without issue.
    Any Ideas?

Are you installing the package directly from the .msi file? If so, you'll need to specify your custom transforms by using the transforms property. For example,
    msiexec /i AcroRead.msi transforms=AcroRead.mst /qb
