Acrobat 8.1.7 WillClose in a Browser

Running 8.1.7 Professional in OSX 10.6 using Safari 4.0.3 (32-bit)
I noticed that my WillClose handler no longer runs when I close my PDF document inside of a browser window.  Is this a matter of some settings that I need to enable, or has 8.1.7 disabled the WillClose inside of a browser.
Any idea if this can be made to work would be appreciated.

IAJusth,
Have you attempted to run Adobe Acrobat in compatibility mode for Windows XP? Right click on the application, select "troubleshoot compatibility" and follow the on screen prompts.
Also, should you require additional assistance Microsoft does have an official Windows 7 Support Forum located here http://tinyurl.com/9fhdl5. It is supported by product specialists as well as engineers and support teams. You may want to check the threads there for additional support.

  • Adobe Acrobat 6 and Adobe Reader 9 Web browser problem

    Good Day,
    I have a user that has Acrobat 6 and Reader 9 installed on the same computer. Acrobat 6 is used to edit (via open with -> Adobe Acrobat) while for normal reading, they use Adobe Reader 9 (since some files that were created in Acrobat 9 cannot be opened with Acrobat 6).
    From the desktop, everything works as it should. However, the problem is that when the user is trying to open a document on the web (from Internet Explorer 7) then instead of using Reader 9, it uses Acrobat 6 (and because is unable to open Acrobat 9 files) it gives an error saying that you need to have Adobe Reader 8 or 9 installed.
    So far I have tried the following:
    1) Reparing Reader 9
    2) Uninstalling Acrobat 6 running a repair on Reader 9 (which fixes the problem, until I reinstall Acrobat 6 again. I make sure I do not put a check mark on Read files on Internet Explorer)
    3) Went to Preferences on Acrobat 6 and unchecked Display PDF in browser.
    4) Checked on Manage Add-ins and tried disable any combination of Adobe PDF addin to make it work only with 9.
    Note: Reader version is the latest 9.4.1
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks
    Max

    Ok, so after I wrote the last post, I read through the related posts, and found the answer to
    what i was looking for.
    I guess it is unofficial, but I tested it today and works great:
    Registry that needs to be changed is:
    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Software\Adobe\Acrobat\Exe
    Change the path (Acrobat 6) from "c:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat6\Acrobat.exe"
    to the path of Reader 9 which would be something like "c:\Program Files\Adobe\Reader 9.0\Reader\AcroRd32.exe"
    That fixed the problem.
    Thanks

  • Using Acrobat's Catalog (Index) function in a Browser environment

    Operating in a browser-based Microsoft Sharepoint Server environment, our shop accesses a number of large aircraft-related manuals that consist of multiple documents in Acrobat PDF format. We were stymied whenever we attempted to perform a full-search of the documents (cataloged via an index.pdx file)—the function simply did not work. Strangely, even though we linked the search function to the correct index file on the network server, Acrobat searched for a file on one's local drive.
    The documentation for Acrobat 7.0/9.0 offers the following explanation:
    "To search an Adobe PDF index, you must open Acrobat as a standalone application,not within your web browser." But this information was hardly encouraging since we had no intention of giving up the browser-based environment.
    Our IT staff has discovered there is a way to work around this restriction. The trick is to access the index file using Windows file  protocol. This step in effect launches Acrobat as a standalone app within a browser environment. For example,
         1. Add a bookmark labeled "(FULL TEXT) SEARCH" to the document's main navigation window
         2. Edit the properties of the bookmark
             a. Set the Action to "Open a web link"
             b. Edit the URL to the fully-qualified address of the index file using the file protocol:  file://..../index.pdx
              NOTE: You have to use file protocol in order for the catalog function to work
         3. Save the main document to enable the modifed link
         4. Click the bookmark to launch the Search PDF window. The default Look In target now becomes the catalog file (index.pdx) of item 2b.

    How do you access the generic PDF, directly or through an HTML page? It shouldn't make a difference. More importantly, does a user accessing this file have access to all the folders/files associated with the bookmark, that is, are they on the same server?
    Each of the slash pairs is meaningful. The notation with four slashes file://// ... implies that the host computer and a portion of the path is already known or defined, which I suspect is probably not the case for you. For details of the file URL, see http://www.cs.tut.fi/~jkorpela/fileurl.html. Attempting to access the index.pdx via http://... protocol does not work, as you point out, as it tries to locate the file in the temporary Interner folder on your local computer (as defined in the Internet Options dialog).
    The following notation works in my environment:
    file://z:\deptfolder\subfolder\subfolder\main_subfolder\pdf_subfolder\index.pdx (z: is a network drive)
    file://hostname/deptfolder/subfolder/subfolder/main_subfolder/pdf_subfolder/index.pdx (hostname is our INTRANET server)
    Added note: based on my reading of Acrobat 7.0/9.0 Help, the "Cannot find ..." error message indicates that the link relationship between the master file and the index has been broken.  An index assumes a relative path exists between the index definition file (PDX) and the folder containing the indexed documents. If this relative path remains unchanged, you don't have to do anything after moving the indexed document collection. However, if the relative path changes or the index resides on a drive or server distinct from any part of the collection, you will need to create and build the index in the same location as the collection.
    Using Relative Addressing
    The fact that the Catalog index function relies on relative addressing can simplify the task of maintaining links if the relationship between files remains unchanged in moving from one environment to another. For example,  given the following relationship
    main_subfolder (menu file)
        pdf subfolder (PDF files)
            index subfolder (index definition file)
    recreated in a browser environment, you can create the bookmark links in a menu file as:
        Action: Open a web link     ---->    ./pdf subfolder/filename.pdf  (open PDF document)
        Action: Open a web link     ---->    ./pdf subfolder/index subfolder/index.pdx (open INDEX file)
    in which the dot notation identifies (i.e., serves as a placeholder for) the path to the main_subfolder, The Open a web link function permits you to modify the contents of the URL. (Acrobat attempts to open each link using the file:// protocol.) For some reason, Acrobat may change the bookmark Action to "Execute a menu item" after you create and save it,  but this step does not change the funtionality of the bookmark.

  • Acrobat X : no toolbar anymore in my browser

    Hello,
    I updated Adobe Reader to the X version, but when I read a PDF from my Browser (Firefox 3.6.13), there is no Acrobat Reader toolbar (next page, adjust page to the pages width...) in the web page. It is very annoying.
    Is there a way to get this toolbar ?
    Thanks.

    Thanks, hitting F8 will reduce my irriation factor considerably.  It's much faster than the awkward method I was using of hiding the navigation pane and then clicking the Acrobat icon to get the menu bar.  I need to use the toolbar to print PDFs from Acrobat.  For some reason, the Firefox print menu won't work for me with PDFs -- no error box, printer dialog, or anything else for that matter. Save works with PDFs, just not printing them from the Firefox menu.
    Thanks again!

  • Acrobat is changing hyperlinks when opening in browser

    Hi everyone,
    I have a pdf file containing a lot of hyperlinks. When certain links are clicked on, Acroabt opens up a browser window but the page won't load because some of the characters in the URL are being changed. For example the following url:
    http://law.ato.gov.au/atolaw/view.htm?rank=find&criteria=AND~PS~basic~exact:::AND~LA~basic ~exact:::AND~2010%2F4~basic~exact&target=OA&style=java&sdocid=PSR/PS20104/NAT/ATO/00001&re cStart=1&PiT=99991231235958&Archived=false&recnum=1&tot=3&pn=ALL:::ALL
    ...gets replaced with this:
    http://law.ato.gov.au/atolaw/view.htm?rank=find&criteria=AND%7EPS%7Ebasic%7Eexact:::AND%7E LA%7Ebasic%7Eexact:::AND%7E2010%2F4%7Ebasic%7Eexact&target=OA&style=java&sdocid=PSR/PS2010 4/NAT/ATO/00001&recStart=1&PiT=99991231235958&Archived=false&recnum=1&tot=3&pn=ALL:::ALL
    It seems to be swapping out the tilde sign (~) with the following characters:
    %7E
    When I hover over the hyplink in Acroabt, the correct version appears. It only happens once it's clicked and the brower window is opened.
    Does anyone know why this happens or whether there is a workaround?
    Thanks in advance

    Tilde is indeed arguably forbidden in a URL, and should be replaced by %7E. So Acrobat is doing the right thing. We can now often get away with the tilde, but they should be treated as exactly equivalent.
    This is discussed in http://www.cs.tut.fi/~jkorpela/tilde.html which can also be accessed as http://www.cs.tut.fi/%7Ejkorpela/tilde.html.
    You are right that the Australian government web site isn't accepting this. The site appears to be faulty.

  • Acrobat 9 - Comment toolbar drops off in browser window

    Hello,
    We use a browser environment to comment on PDF documents and sometimes (about 5% of the time) with Acrobat 9 the "Comment" toolbar option does not appear (this does not happen with earlier versions of Acrobat). If I close the browser and Acrobat down then restart it appears again.
    Does anyone know why this might sometimes happen?
    Thanks.

    Is IE9 Security preventing the download of the file?  IE9 has a security feature that does this and pops a dialog at the bottom of the browser window, you might want to check it out.

  • Acrobat 9 Help is broken with Chrome browser installed.

    I have Acrobat 9 Standard on Win7-64bit;  browsers are Chrome v. 18.0.1025.142 and IE 9.  Acrobat Help does not work correctly when launched in Chrome;  only shows part of the text, search doesn't work, etc. Acrobat Help works fine when launched from IE (this was determined by cutting and pasting the link into IE).  The problem is that Acrobat is stuck on launching Help from Chrome.  This occurs even when IE is set as the default browser.  I've tried doing an Acrobat install/repair while IE is set to default, but the undesired behavior is not corrected by this:  always launches Help using Chrome.  Any suggestions would be appreciated.

    Chrome ignores Adobe Reader.

  • IE 8.0 forces Acrobat 8.1.3 to open in browser

    I am running XP SP3 and recently upgraded from IE 6 to IE 8.0 .
    I had checked off Internet->"Display PDF in Browser" in the Acrobat 8.1.3 Preferences.  So with IE6, the PDF link opened in a new window.
    With IE 8.0, even when this flag is checked off, it forces the PDF to open inside the browser window with Microsoft hijacking the window.
    How do I override IE 8.0 and open in a new window?
    Thanks to all

  • Acrobat Pro 8, Highlight not working in browser

    The company I work for has a specific audience that requires functionality in Acrobat Pro. This audience accesses these PDF document on our intranet using IE6 and uses some of Pro functionality (highlight, stick notes) and saves the annotation files locally. All that worked well with Acrobat Pro 6.0, but we recently upgraded to Acrobat Pro 8 and all these users are seeing is basic functionality, similar to what is in Reader. NO more annotation features.
    I have verified and Reader is not installed on these workstation, a clean install of Acrobat Pro 8 is installed. If I open a PDF outside of IE6, Pro opens and all the functionality is there, but in IE6 it is limited (Reader Like). I have attempted to add the tools to tool bar but after selecting tools, they do not appear. Browser just refreshes without tools, as if they are being prevented from loading.
    Has Adobe changed the functionality of Adobe Pro to only allow in browser viewing of documents with something like Adobe reader? I have searched the web and have seen nothing about this. Please help.

    I am not sure if VISTA has the same problem as Win7 or not. For Win7, the AcroTray application that is used for PDF creation (both when printing to the Adobe PDF printer and with PDF Maker in AA6) will likely not work correctly. This may also be the case with VISTA. To get around this problem you have to print-to-file (you can change the PDF Port to FILE in the printer properties). After the file is create, you can open it in Distiller to complete the PDF creation. It may be possible to create watched folders to automate this process, but is not as ideal. In any case, you will likely have to use a work around. Also, update your AA6 (currently at 6.0.6). I have been able to do this with AA5 on Win7 as a test and it did indeed work. There may still be other issues for AA5 on Win7, but that was the major one.
    All of these changes came from the rewrite that Adobe had to do to be compatible with the new OSs, not a trivial task. Do you want to blame Adobe or MS or both? Take your pick, but the end result is that it is time to upgrade. Unfortunately, AA6 can not be upgraded to AAX. You have to buy AAX at full cost at this point. To get the upgrade you would have to have at least AA7.

  • Detect if fillable form is open in Acrobat (as opposed to Reader or web browser)

    I have a fillable form that is Reader Extended (so it can be saved from Adobe Reader). After a user fills in the form, he clicks a submit button that sends a data stream to a servlet. The servlet embeds this data as XML in another version of the form, converts the form to be PDF/A compliant, and returns the new PDF/A form with embedded data. That all works fine when the fillable form was open in either Reader or a web browser. But if the user has the fillable form open in Acrobat when he clicks the submit button, the embedded data is stripped out of the PDF/A form that's returned by the servlet.
    It's not a problem if the user fills in the data while the form is open in Acrobat, as long as he closes the form and opens it in Reader or a web browser before clicking the submit button.
    Is there a way to detect if the fillable form is open in Acrobat (perhaps in the preSubmit event?) so I can display a message warning the user to save and close the form, and then open it in Reader or a web browser before clicking the submit button?

    I added the following code to my submit button, but it gives me the same appType and host.name values for IE and Acrobat, so I can't tell them apart:
    var
    viewerType = xfa.host.appType;
    var
    viewerName = xfa.host.name;xfa.host.messageBox("Viewer is "
    + viewerType);xfa.host.messageBox("Host is "
    + viewerName);
    viewerType is Exchange-Pro
    viewerName is Acrobat

  • Adobe Acrobat documents continue to open in web browser...

    Hi,
    I have a situation with
    Web application general setting "Browser File Handing" set to strict in the general settings. Also tried changing to permissive, does not help.
    Site collection "Open Documents in Client Applications by Default" feature Enabled
    Document library advanced setting "Default open behavior for browser-enabled documents" set to Open in the client application.
    The documents still open in the browser. Any suggestions? Can serverfiles.xml help?
    Regards,
    Arsalan.

    There is no server-side solution. This is a client-side application configuration. It is basically an ActiveX plugin that Adobe Acrobat installs to handle opening documents in the browser, SharePoint has no control over it.

  • Acrobat file hangs up even when just browsing in explorer

    I created a concatenated file from a collection of smaller pdfs using acrobat (vers 8, Vista) about 21 MB. However, even trying to change its name or look at its properties in windows explorer causes the window to hang with the spinning blue circle. I can open the pdf OK by quickly double clicking and even save it again - but the new file has the same behaviour. I cant move the file itself for that reason, but I can copy and move the folder its in.  There does not seem to be an error in the file itself according to disk  check. I suspect it is trying to preview the file when I click over it, but not succeeding. Is there anything I could do with it - e.g. stop its preview if that is a problem? (I would have to change its properties from Acrobat, not windows explorer). I have already removed its hidden data etc.

    Installed the latest version of acrobat (8.1 something) and restarted the computer. Problem went away so not sure what the issue was in the end.

  • How can I install Adobe Acrobat without installing the browser extensions?

    Hello All,
    I am a computer Technician at a high school and we have very strict browser requirements for different services. We need to use Adobe Acrobat to convert PDF's, and other tasks, and we need to use Chrome to open Adobe Reader files. The issue is that I want my 3 browsers (Chrome, IE, Firefox) to open PDF files using Adobe Reader XI. All my plugin settings are correct to use Adobe Reader to open PDF's, but it either downloads a PDF to the computer, or opens up in the browsers default reader (Chrome does this), or opens up to a blank page with a blank error message. I went into the programs Internet settings for Adobe Reader and Adobe Acrobat and it's telling me the browser opens them up using Adobe Acrobat (With no option to change the setting). The problem is only solved when I uninstall Adobe Acrobat.Then I am able to open PDF's in Adobe Reader just like I want (but this gets rids of Acrobat). This leads me to believe that when I install Adobe Acrobat, there is a registry key or something that is telling the computer to open PDF's in browsers using Acrobat. My initial question is this: How can I install adobe Acrobat without linking it to the browser. I JUST want Adobe Acrobat as a program installed on the computer.
    Additional Info:
    - I build a computer image and use that image on several computers. This issue persists with all of the computers I installed the image on.
    - I am using Adobe Reader 11 (Now DC, but I am willing to use either) and Adobe Acrobat Pro CS3 (I think it's version 9?)
    Thanks for the help.
    - Charlie
