Acrobat 8.1 Bombing Regularly

My disappointment with Acrobat Standard continues to grow. I rely heavily on Acrobat throughout each and every day, but the program regularly bombs -- probably once every other day.
I have tried uninstalling and completely reinstalling on a few different occasions, but this never helps.
The problem of the program regularly bombing was also something I dealt with in version 7 as well. I thought that upgrading to version 8 (a little less than one year ago) would hopefully solve the problem -- I thought it might be something inherent in version 7 -- but version 8 has proven to be just as much of a headache.
I'm not really sure there is anything that can be done to troubleshoot this problem; attempting to work with Acrobat support 8-10 months ago didn't really prove to be successful. We thought we had a solution in place, but the program started regularly bombing the very next day. We never followed up with tech support because they really didn't have any answers in the first place.
I guess I'm just hoping -- probably hoping against hope -- that someone out there has experienced a similar problem and has overcome it... somehow.
(At this point I'm seriously thinking of going over to Nuance's PDF Maker program. Hopefully it will prove to be much more stable...)

The program generally freezes -- the vast majority of the time -- when I have converted a webpage to a PDF document. Generally these webpages are just editorials from newspapers -- documents that contain almost no graphics whatsoever.
I will switch over to the newly created PDF and after about 10-20 seconds of reading this editorial, it will freeze and I will get the normal error messages (Vista).
(I read a lot of editorials each and every day -- part of my job -- and it's much easier to convert them to a PDF document because the text becomes much larger and easier to read... just in case anyone was interested as to why I was doing this.)
As far as other major programs running in the background: I generally only have Firefox, Microsoft Outlook (2007), and Microsoft Word (2007) running at the same time. That's it.
I'm running the 32-bit version of Windows Vista Ultimate.
I do not have any third-party plug-ins installed with Acrobat.... at least I don't believe so. Never have done anything like this with either version 7 or version 8.
I do not have Microsoft Live OneCare installed. I have no other versions of Acrobat or Acrobat Reader installed.
I have not tried starting Acrobat without the plug-ins installed as you have suggested, but will do so (even though I don't have any third-party plug-ins that I know of).
Thanks for everyone's help!

  • Acrobat 9.3 And Office 2010 PDFMaker Issue

    Hello:
From the Adobe knowledge base I found that the Acrobat Menu Ribbon Tab for PDFMaker which is normally visible from within Word, Excel or PowerPoint does not appear in Office 2010.  This was to be fixed in Acrobat X, but since I haven't acquired it yet, I am using the suggested workarounds.  However, the workarounds don't let you "fine tune" the parameters you can set in PDFMaker.  Is there a way to still access the settings in PDFMaker to make adjustments such as which headings and titles create bookmarks, or am I limited to the smaller set of options in the regular Acrobat Options?

    I appreciate your comments Dave.
The Australian academic year is late February to early December and so we rebuild our software image at this time each year. Our purchase of our volume licence for CS5 is less than 2 weeks old so this is not old software. When asked about a CS5 dot point release with Acrobat X we were told this was not happening and to look to CS6 at the end of 2011 for Acrobat X to be included.
Please remember that most of our clients are acquiring Acrobat as part of a Creative Suite and so do not have Acrobat X either (we regularly poll our students to see the penetration of new software releases) and are not looking to spend extra dollars on top of their suite purchase. We considered the separate upgrade path, but that would put us out of synch with the majority of our client base.
We are not seeking a free upgrade here, only the patch that Adobe technical support has told me is coming for Acrobat 9 (as recently as 14th Dec) – just don’t have any idea of the timeline.

  • Acrobat 9 and Office 2010 pdfmaker ribbon

We are an adult training institution using the latest Microsoft Office Pro and Creative Suite Design Premium suites. (Currently 2010/CS5)
Pdfmaker has been a key part of the PDF Basics syllabus for some time and to have to wait till the end of 2011 for a solution (Creative Suite 6?) is a large inconvenience.
Given that Adobe are still selling Acrobat 9 as a “current” product as part of the suites, I believe that a free upgade to Acrobat 9.xx that has the functionallity restored should be in order, rather than being told that “ps and by the way … the product that you bought TODAY doesn’t work and possibly never will unless you upgrade”!
Spoke to Adobe customer support about this yesterday and their response was to downgrade to Office 2007 if pdfmaker is that important – a fairly arrogant approach.
This is an Adobe problem, not Microsoft, as they are the 3rd party providing the plug-in. (Adobe are quick to point this out when it comes to Photoshop plug-ins.)
As we advertise using the packaged suites upgrading an individual product outside of the automatic updates is not an option.
In the past I have found Adobe to be a responsive organisation, but given we have already paid for Acrobat 9 Pro volume licencing twice (CS4 & CS5 Design Premium suites) this has to rate as very poor and my worst experience with Adobe in the last 15 years!
When are they going to "see the light"?

  • Acrobat replaces NTFS permissions of Temp folder

    Acrobat Pro v11.0.1
I have set location of my Temp folder to another drive F:.

My user (ex. "SomeDomain\SomeUser") belongs to Adminstrators group and set as owner of this folder.

At random time intervals Acrobat would change the NTFS file permissions of the Temp folder and remove my user (i.e. "SomeDomain\SomeUser") from the permissions list.
Here is an audit event log entry (EventID 4670):

    Hello,
I am using Acrobat to create documents which can contain quiet a decent amount of fields (like 90 or more). Acrobat flickers on a regular basis when I start to edit these fields (meaning the fields are loaded again and again from top to bottom) which is a big inconvenience.
Is there any workaround to stop/limit this  behavior ?

  • HT6114 pdf's freezing in Preview!

I see that there is no update for Preview in the current update (10.9.2) regarding the fact that it keeps freezing randomly when reading pdf's.  Is anyone else still having this problem?

I do like Adobe Acrobat and use it regularly but there are parts of Preview that I like a little better.  That being said, this is a new problem that Preview has, where it is freezing while scrolling through pdf's.  I've been using the same type of pdf's for years now and it is only after the Mavericks update that this freezing problem has started.

  • How to run distiller 5.0 as localsystem service

We have been running distiller as a windows 2000 service along with our Formscape application. In the past the service was running under the formscape account. Occasionally, the service will stop running if the formscape user is not logged in. Not sure why this is. I've been told to run this service as the localsystem instead, however, nothing happens when files come in this configuration. I believe this is due to there is no way to specify "watched folders" for the localsystem user.  I think each user can log in to the server and customize the "watched folders" to their liking, so when running as a service under "formscape" user, it will look at the watched folder settings for formscape.
How do we either set the watched folders for the local system user or ensure that the service keeps running under formscape even if formscape user logs out?

Was this the special Distiller Server product? Or just the Distiller that comes with Adobe Acrobat?
Because the regular one is not only not designed for server use, it's not licensed for it either. (Take a look at the warning on the watched folder set up screen as well as the EULA).
Sorry not to have better news, but it's best to get this sorted.

  • Unable to find??? What does this mean?

First off I will explain what I was doing before I encountered trouble. I was attempting to print a USPS shipping label and I believe it had something to do with Adobe. I had early printed a sample label without any trouble. But when I went to print a real label it was giving me issues. Then everything(even simple Microsoft works documents, it was telling me to save the file. It was giving me a save as and the file was .xps I attempted to do a system restore to another point and that didn't fix it. Somewhere I think I deleted a file or something. I understand computers pretty well, but shows what happens someone who doesn't have a clue gets themselves into trouble.
But anyways now when I turn on my computer and it loads up I get this message
    Unable to find C:\ProgramData\AdobePDF\Settings\*.joboptions"
And it says I must be an adminstrator to load these files or something.
If anyone can help me I appreciate it very much. I have since uninstalled Adobe Reader and Re-installed it and I still get this message. So how do I solve this trouble?  Computer was working fine until this incident.

can you try uninstall, reboot and run the cleaner form
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301, reboot
again using admin power ID look if you still have traces of acrobat reader in the application folder of  all users, admin, your own ID
if needed manual remove them all after full backup,
    also do
    reg query "hklm\software\adobe\Acrobat Reader"
reg query "hkcu\software\adobe\Acrobat Reader" form your regular ID
be sure there is not any
if there are, you best do a backup before deleting anything.

  • Append 0 in front of a number from 1 to 9

    Hi,
I am trying to create a textfield that accepts the months of a year expressed in a MM format. The unfortunate thing is that when I go to the Format tab and set the Format category as Number, when I type in 01 representing Jan, it will remove the 0 in front.
How do I use Javascript to append 0 in front when it is from 1 to 9 and not append when it is from 10 to 12?
    Thanks for reading!

To fully understand this code you need to be versed in core JavaScript, Acrobat-specific JavaScript and Regular Expressions...
You can read about JS here:
    https://developer.mozilla.org/en/JavaScript/Reference
    or here:
    http://w3schools.com/js
Acrobat-specific JS reference can be found here:
    http://www.adobe.com/devnet/acrobat/javascript.html
There are many excellent tutorials about this subject here:
    http://acrobatusers.com/tutorials
Here's a short description of what the keystroke code does:
event.rc is the property of the event object that determines whether or not to accept the keystroke.
event.change is the value of the keystroke.
So what this line says is this:
    Accept the keystroke if:
    - It is blank (for example, when the user deletes a character) OR
    - if it is composed of a single digit (expressed with a Regular Expression)

  • Need Merging PDF forms in Android Tablet (with a twist!)

Hi guys I was wondering if there is anyway to Merge PDF documents in a Android app and keep the repeating information in forms intact. Let me explain. I have a regular form which cilents fill out but some times another form needs to be filled out also which have the repeating fields like name, date of birth, etc. I know that it is possible to do it in in Acrobat X Pro where you combine two PDF documents and as long as the form field is the same name or copied and pasted in the two seperate PDFs , information repeats itself automatically. However I was wondering if there is a way to do this on an android tablet (Motorola Xoom for me). I have tried apps that merge 2 seperate documents however the information from those that would normally repeat in Acrobat X on a regular computer does not do so in PDF merging apps I tried. I normally use qPDF and ezpdfreader but they don't seem to have a merging of two documents option (Or i don't know/can't find one). So any help? Any useful app I don't know about that can some my dilemia? Thanks ahead !

    Hi,
i know this is rather late, but based on what I've read online, it seems your issue is common among pdf form apps on the Android. From what i hear, qPDF Notes works well, but doesn't allow calculations.  My guess is that the app developer hasn't loaded/programmed the necessary scripts in order to achieve calculations.

  • Save editable form into regular PDF document using Acrobat Reader

    Hello,
With Adobe Pro, I've created a PDF form using the following:
    Save As Other...
    Reader Extended PDF
Enable More Tools (includes form fill-in & save)...
Once saved, I am sending this form to colleagues for them to fill out.  These colleagues only have access to Acrobat Reader.
What I'm hoping to do is to have them save the file into a regular PDF document with the info inserted in the form but without the option to change the form info (change from editable form to regular PDF file).
    Thanks for your help.

Hrm, OK. Well I actually DON'T have my document set as a reader extended PDF. If i fill out my fields then try to use the sign feature, it's not flattening the fields when I save/close reopen. They are still editable.
Just as a test, I saved it as reader extended and the sign feature is grayed out as you stated it should be. I am using acrobat X to create my fields and using reader XI to test inputting data/saving.
I need users to be able to fill it out, save then send and the recipient NOT be able to modify the fields. Am I missing something with the sign feature?
    Thanks again for the reply!

  • Convert a Live Cycle Designer generated PDF to regular acrobat PDF

    Hi,
I am assigned to the task of converting Live Cycle Designer generated PDF to regular acrobat PDF. I tried all options know to me but cannot succeed. The forms in LC designer is a fillable form with two buttons at the bottom. (Print & reset). The controls on the forms are
    Textbox
    Checkbox
    Print & reset buttons
    I tried the following options
print  to a new pdf but the form became non-fillable with no controls
importing into acrobat as new form but it said "document contran xml form and cannot be imported"
tried save as with no success
I am willing to re-do the form but trying to minimize the re-work
The add or edit fields on form menu is not available for the form generated in live cycle.
we want to get rid of all live cycle dependencies and stick to bare bones acrobat
    Please help

The only way I can think of woudl be to print the XFA form to PDF (using the Print driver that comes with Acrobat). This will create an AcroForm PDF for you but all fields and structure wil be lost. This will give you the boiler plate, then you can use the Form Tools in Acrobat to lay fields on top of the form.
Note that if you want to change some of the boiler plate you will have to go back to Designer and repeat the process. You may want to bite the bullet and redo the form now.

I opened Adobe Acrobate XI Standard to create a form.  I then selected From Template, which took me to Adobe FormsCentral Online.  However, I think the form is an HTML web form.  All I wanted was a regular PDF form that I could email my co-workers for an internal project we're colletively working on.  Now I see that FormsCentral is going away and I can't get my doc to save as a PDF without an upgrade?  Help

You should be able to log into the online Formscentral Acrobat XI air app and see your doc there. From there you would need to save it out as a PDF without a submit button to have it continue to work past July. If you don't see your online form(s) please let me know the adobeID you use to log into the service as well as the form name that is missing and I will look into it for you.
