Acrobat 8.2 OCR problem

We are having a problem with running the OCR process on scanned PDF files.  The process seems to run and complete properly, but when the new version of the document is presented on the screen it has been compressed into the bottom left corner of the page.  Below is a sample image from one of my scans.

OK, just what are the steps you are taking. Have you only scanned the image directly in Acrobat (no OCR)? Then you are applying OCR. Did you save the file before the OCR and check the page size of that original save? There are just too many unknowns for use at this point.

  • Acrobat 9 Trial OCR Problems

I am testing the application to see how it would help in creating an archive of a handwritten letters from long ago. There may be as many as several hundred documents.
The letters are all dated and need to be placed in chronological order and will need to be scanned into PDF format. If OCR could be used to create parallel, more readable versions, that would be excellent.
To that end I have tried to test OCR on a couple of the letters. It appears to go through the motions but then I can't find the results. There are no error messages. The program indicates that the task is complete. I believe the last message is, "generating output."
Thinking the results were generated as a hidden layer I tried to make it visible. Nothing there.
I have to be missing the point.
    Help! :)

OCR in Acrobat doesn't do handwriting very well if at all.
You may want to check in to some of the applications that are dedicated to doing OCR and see if they work any better.

  • Adobe Acrobat  has encountered a problem and needs to close.

Just recently when I launch Acrobat X after about 10 seconds I get this error, "Adobe Acrobat has encountered a problem and needs to close.  We are sorry for the inconvenience."  I can create PDFs and open PDFs for 10 seconds.  I've done a repair of Acrobat,  I tried a new user account, and  I disbled all my start up items.  I still get the same error  I have no clue what to do.  Any suggestions?
    J.R.

OK Will,  I pressed ctrl + Shift and double clicked on a desktop icon of a file.pdf I had saved there and it opened and is still open.  By not pressing ctrl + Shift the file opens then closes with that error in about10 seconds.
So now, what has that proved to us is the issue?  Doesn't that load Acrobat without all the extensions?
This issue just started a few days ago and all I remember installing on my computer were some Window's updates.

  • I have paid for Adobe Acrobat XI Pro OCR but it will not recognise a letter in the serial number for me to update my adobe account and any of the programs I have tried using to convert a PDF file on a Mac to a word doc it is converting file with funny sym

I have been supplied info in an email to copy and paste for a new product purchase "Adobe Acrobat XI Pro OCR" but am unsure how and where to copy and paste to. There is also a link below the serial number. I have tried entering serial number into my Adobe ID but it is not recognising one of the letters in the 24 Digit serial number??? Also I have tried other products previously downloaded to convert a 7 page PDF file on my Mac and convert it to a Word doc but everything I have tried is converting the file to display some text correctly but also displays random symbols and fonts in place of the handwritten info filled in on the form... also getting blank pages included instead of the info??? Would appreciate some help... I am older generation and not always tech savvy, and it is doing my head in haha.

    Hi Jock,
I've checked your account, and all is well there. Please make sure that you're logging in with the same Adobe ID/password that you used when you signed up.
Then, clear the browser cache, and try logging in directly to https://cloud.acrobat.com.
Please let us know how it goes.

  • Can't upload files--"Acrobat has encountered a problem"

I'm experimenting with Acrobat. com as a way to collaborate with peers across the country. Seems like an ideal answer. I'm testing the "free," 2-person version at the moment, and can't seem to upload files to My Workspace. I'm trying to upload two files individually--the first a small MS Word file, the second a 1mb PowerPoint. Each attempt produces an "Acrobat has encountered a problem" error message. I can't even upload a photo of myself for my profile. At first, I thought it might be a firewall/proxy problem, but I ran all the Adobe diagnostics. Everything tested fine. I'm even able to establish video connection in the ConnectNow workspace. I'm working off a T3 pipeline, so I don't think its a volume problem. Help.

Hi, can you tell exactly what requirements exist?
I am having the same problem when I try to upload a file. My Admin has opened the site Acrobat.com for me and I can access Acrobat.com via browser, but not upload PDFs. I also cannot upload files for review from other Adobe products (RoboHelp or Acrobat).
This whole issue seems rather strange to me - an online reviewing process should be designed for professional users and these user are typically behind a firewall. Therefore it would be most important to pinpoint exactly which access rights are required, rather then let the user try and stumble around themselves.

  • Acrobat Pro 8 Printing Problems with Xerox 252 Fiery

printer: Xerox 252 with Fiery Controller
    Software: Acrobat Pro 8
    OS: WinXp pro
The problem occurs when I am printing a binder that consists of 8x11 and 11x17's. The printer locks up and does not print. We have had the Xerox techs come out but after numerous trouble shooting efforts we came to a conclusion that there is an issue with Acrobat 8.
Also, in order to print an 8x11 or 11x17 there is a need to go through and set the file size for each time we print. The check box "print by pdf source size" is checked and we are still having problems.
I've had no issue with Acrobat 7 and the problems I'm having are with Acrobat pro 8.

Correction it's a Xerox Docucolor 242 PS with Fiery

  • Acrobat 8 Pro - Toolbar Problem

    Hi,
2 days ago I bought a new Dell T5400 precision workstation.  I am using XP Pro SP3. No anti-virus software yet.
After installing everything (Office, Quark, PageMaker, CS3) I launched Acrobat and all seemed well until I used the cropping tool.
At this point everything slowed to a crawl.
Same problem if I use the hand tool - perhaps other tools may also give the problem.
Uninstalled every application including CS3 and used the cleansweep utility (think it is called that) to make sure no legacy bits of CS3 remained.
Re-installed just Acrobat Pro but the problem persists. The programme launches in a blink of an eye and I can zoom in and out at blistering speed until I use the crop tool and then everything just slows right down again to the point where you think the application has frozen. After quiting and re-launching everything works at blistering speed again until I use the cropping tool or the hand tool. Same problem if I choose Document > Crop Pages.
Have tried several different Acrobat files.
Tried installing the Acrobat updates one at a time until 8.1.6 (I think) but the problem persists.
So now, apart from any software that was pre-installed on the machine the only things I have added is Acrobat Pro 8.
The only other think to say is that I used PartitionMagic from Norton before I started.
I haven't tried to re-install the system software and am reluctant to go through this pain unless someone has overcome this problem by doing this before.
I'm guessing that Acrobat 8 Pro has a conflict issue with something on the machine.
    Does anyone have any ideas?
    Russ

In the end it turned out that the standard graphics card which came with my Dell Precision Workstation (nVidia 290) is not supported by Acrobat Pro 8.
I just assumed it would be.
We had a PC Wizard around for 5 hours and having turned on the 2D GPU option in Acrobat Preferences without any success, he went deep down into the machine and turned things off that were on by default and turned things on that were off (memory allocation I think).
After this everything is fine. In fact we can turn off the 2D GPU option and it doesn't seem to affect anything.
I should add that I had actually bought 2 identical workstations from Dell and they both failed to work properly with Acrobat 8.
    Thanks for all your help.
    Russ

  • Acrobat 9 OCR problems

Although this already had a discussion, the replies there didn't solve my problems. OCR in 9 crashes almost all the time and I have applied all the updates available to date. Version 8 works fine but I already upgraded most computers to 9 thinking it would better (my bad). The slowest computer with less RAM but version 8 goes along fine, never a problem; four other faster computers with average of 2 GB of RAM but with V9 installed never complete a batch process OCR (settings are as close to the V8 version as possible) without crashing.
The last discussion ended with the suggestion of installing latest updates; has this worked for anyone? Ongoing projects require use of mutliple computers to complete OCR; ready to uninstall 9 from all computers and try to find V8 to use.
If anyone has any other suggestions, please post. Thanks for your time.

So why start another posting instead of adding to the old one ?! Think of the people searching for an answer at a later date. Multiple threads confuse not help.
Always, always before asking for tech support ensure that you have the latest Operating System updates and Adobe product updates for the specific product you're having trouble with. No one wants to spend tme helping someone when they might not have installed all the latest updates, (which may have fixed the problem in the 1st place). That has to be assumed that the questioner has already done. So don't ask about applying just do it (to answer your question about the updates).
In terms of number it's quite possible you're maxing out your system RAM. It's not uncommon to require 5x the size of the scanned image in memory for each page when processing. That can add up fast for complex pages when OCRing. Acrobat 9 probably uses more memory, but in the end it optimizes  better than version 8.

  • OCR Problem Adobe Acrobat 7

    Does anyone know this error?

Save the pages in Acrobat to the TIFF format, using a resolution of 300 dpi
and the color set to monochrome. Then use the "Create PDF from multiple
files" feature to put the TIFF images back into a single PDF to be OCR'd.

  • How to force acrobat to perform ocr?

    Hi Folks,
Is there any way I can force acrobat to perform an OCR on pages which it says have "renderable text"?  The problem is that, when I copy and paste from the document, I just get a bunch of gobbledegook out.  You can see the problem document here: http://www.gofc-gold.uni-jena.de/redd/sourcebook/Sourcebook_Version_Nov_2009_cop15-1.pdf
    Thanks!
    Acrobat Professional 9.2.0
    XP SP3

That there is no real solution to this, after many years is an indication that either:
    Adobe does not care, or
    Adobe does not get it.
I was about to suggest my employer upgrade to a newer version of Acrobat, but see no indication that Adobe has really fixed the problem.
PDFs can contain multiple layers.  When there is bitmapped text, from a scan, and "renderable text" such as a footer containing a document identification number (there are many, many, millions of such pages used in the legal world every day) then for reasons only the programmers at Adobe can explain, Acrobat is incapable of running OCR on the bitmap and leaving the rendered text in its own layer.
This is not a difficult problem. Since Acrobat can deal with layers making up each page, it should be somewhat trivial to have the OCR function find the bitmapped layer and operate on that layer.
Instead Acrobat gives the LAME error message.
The "fix" of saving to TIFF and back is a pain-in-the-arse work-around. It even froze Acrobat when I tried to save to TIFF.
The "fix" of ignoring renderable text in the margin area and running OCR on the interior bitmap is also not acceptable.
Adobe, you once were a reputable company. You gave the world Postscript. You gave the world PDFs. Why can't you get the OCR function to work properly in Acrobat?

  • Acrobat 9 pro and problems with pdf made by photoshop cs4

    Hello,
I have encountered a problem when viewing pdfs exported from photoshop cs4 using acrobat pro 9. If I open single pdf, it's ok, but whenever I open another pdf, all text is jagged. Then if I close all pdfs and try opening the second one, it's ok again. It looks like acrobat is not able to render texts correctly in newly opened pdf when another pdf is already opened.
This happens only with pdfs exported from photoshop (file->save as->pdf). It does not really matter if the first opened pdf is from photoshop or not, all other opened pdfs from photoshop are crapy.
I tried different settings when saving pdf but the results are always the same - jagged type (it does not even look like aliased, it's completely screwed and unreadable) in second pdf. It is funny because text present as smart object from illustrator renders fine all the time. Therefor I think the problem is between photoshop export and acrobat, vectors are rendered with no problems.
I tried opening on different pc (also with acrobat 9 pro) with the same result. Systems are vista on exporting pc, the second pc is running windows7 beta. However on the third pc with windows XP and adobe reader 9 everything works fine.
Any ideas how to make this work?
    regards,
    embee

Solution found for me. From Adobe Acrobat & Reader 9.1 Release Notes:
Roaming Profiles on Windows and Networked Home Directory on Macintosh
are not supported configurations for 9.0 or 9.1, however we have made
several fixes in 9.1. We are looking at the possibility of supporting
this for the next major release.
As I am working with roaming profiles, my current solution (which is no solution at all) is to wipe current and reinstall Acrobat/Reader 8. Among other things there are supposed console hacks to make the purchased Adobe software run at all in a group work environment. I will end up trying them later.

  • Acrobat V9 Pro OCR can't produce a file

I am trying to perform OCR on a credit card statement. The statement has 3 PDF pages and except for the non-regular header info at the top of the page, everything is in nice columns - five of them.   I specify the output file to be an excel spreadsheet. The OCR engine works OK on pages 1,3.  It chokes on page 2 with an error that it cannot recognize any table OR sometimes produces this message: Acrobat could not perform recognition (OCR) on this page because: This page contains renderable text.
I tried the technote soln to convert to .tiff , but that did not work (actually the instruction are not clear: do you rerun OCR on the .tif file or the newly created .pdf that was made from the .tif file...no matter, I did both, and both failed)http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/333/333110.html
I have also seperated the .pdf doc into three individual files, and OCR'ed page two with same results.
I took page2.pdf, scanned it (not with Acrobat), at 600DPI, and tried to OCR it again, same results.
The page contains a bar code in the margin-could this be killing the OCR process?  I  tried to edit out some of the noise but can't figure out how to delete parts of the .pdf doc.
Also, I highlight only the colums, select Document-> OCR Text Recognition -> Recognize text using OCR....and it does its thing, says it generates output document, but....WHERE?  It does not ask me where it should be placed, and I have no clue where it sticks it.....
    Any help is appreciated....

  • SWF Export, no font showing in Acrobat and zoom border problem (Acrobat & Reader) - Indesign CS6

    Hi Everyone,
If anyone could help me on this that would be great, I've spent hours on the forums and manuals to no avail.
I'm making an interactive PDF brochure in Indesign for one of our new products and I'm having issues (actual or perceived??!!) with the SWF export and PDF creation.  I'm placing animations and video in the INDD, exporting it as an SWF (with the text option as Flash Classic Text) and then opening the SWF (not importing to a word doc or anything, just opening the SWF) with Acrobat using the advanced options to import the video resources and to enable the content when the page is opened.  I then save the file as a PDF.  In the PDF everything works as it should, the animations, the buttons, the video plays and so on.  Great.. hmm not quite.
The trouble I am having is that all the content of the SWF when viewed in Acrobat seems to be getting rasterised/flattened - is this correct?  After the SWF is opened, Acrobat indicates no fonts in the fonts tab in the document properties so when the SWF is zoomed in Acrobat, or the saved PDF in Reader, the font gets pixelated and the document is not searchable/text can not be highlighted.  The images are not selectable either - it is as if the entire page has been flattened to one image.  Is there a way to stop this so that the SWF opened with Acrobat retains the font and individual images like a normal PDF?  Do I have to open the SWF in Flash first to set some parameters or something?  Is there something I am doing wrong when exprting the SWF from Indesign?  I think I have tried about every possible export combination.  When I open the .HMTL (exported at the same time as the SWF from Indesign) in a browser, the same happens.  All the animations work but the text appears to be rasterised/flattened/not searchable.  Sorry if I'm not using the correct terminology.
I have tried importing the SWF back into another new INDD and exporting that as an interactive PDF but then the video does not work.  I suppose I could try exporting all the individual animations as SWFs, importing them all and trying to get them to work with the video but I can see that will take quite some time and does not seem to be a guaranteed solution from what I have read on the forums - video playback being the issue.
Another problem is that when the SWF, or saved PDF, is zoomed in Acrobat/Reader between approx 150% and 210% a thick white border appears in the document and the content is squashed into the middle creating a slightly pixelated and narrow page.  When I zoom out from the page I get a small white line on the right hand border at around 70% zoom.  Please see images.  Does anyone have any idea why this is happening and what I can do to fix it?
On another, sort of related topic, my timing panel went blank yesterday and was not showing any animations in documents that it had been used to order and synch animations on page load as well as new documents.  The panel was blank.  I updated to V8.0.1 and the panel sprang back into life - hope that helps anyone else finding the same problem.
I am not very familiar with Indesign/Acrobat/Flash so I guess all the above could be what I'm doing or I could be asking  really dumb questions - apologies from a newbie.
    Best,
    Emily

    Hi All,
I have now pretty much solved all the issues by creating the SWF in Flash rather than Indesign.  I would advise anyone looking to create an interative PDF with animation and interactivity to go with Flash from the start.  While Flash is a little more involved to create the same effects as Indesign, the extra time taken will ensure a more controllable and better looking PDF in terms of text quality, scalability and so on.  Plus you will not spend days trying to get video to work along side imported SWF etc in Indesign.  One of the best controls in Flash is being able to set the stage.scaleMode for the document so the PDF still looks crisp when zooming, no white borders etc.  So, create the .fla, export to .SWF, open the .SWF with Acrobat, modify the advanced settings to enable start on page load and save as a PDF.  If you don't know Flash, I didn't a couple of days ago, watch a couple of tutorials on Youtube.. buttons, tweens, embedding video and you'll be ready.  Don't be put off by ActionScript, there are really handy Code Snippets in CS6 that do all the heavy lifting for you.
    Sorry Indesign!
    Best,
    Em

  • Acrobat 8.0 Distiller problem - please help

I have Adobe 8.0 Profeessional installed on a vista machine.
I am trying to .pdf some lotus apporach reports into the distiller.
The distiller launches and acrobat launches fine.
When I choose the distiller printer and am asked for a file name and location... I choose a file name and the desktop location.
Then nothing happens. No .pdf of my document is displayed and no file is added anywhere on the hard drive yert alone on the desktop.
Anyone have a location where I can read step by step instrcutions on setting up the distiller printer corectly or help with these simptoms?
    Thank you
    Mark
    [email address deleted by host]

You print to the Adobe PDF printer using the PDF Port. That is how AcroTray notes the file that is produced and starts Distiller. Printing to file with the Adobe PDF printer and then opening in Distiller is the base line of PDF creation that all other methods depend on. If this one does not work, then you have a problem. If you can print to file, then open the file in Distiller to get a PDF, then it is typically AcroTray that is the problem. Sometimes you have to kill AcroTray and then restart it.
It sounds like you may need to do a repair on the Acrobat installation. That is done from the control panel. In XP it is in the Add-Remove Programs. It was moved to another icon name in VISTA. It seems MS and Adobe both like to move things around and rename them!
You say you get an error when you check the print-to-file button, or at least that is what I think you said. Is that correct, or were you able to get a PDF with Distiller? Some folks have also found the need to do a repair after a Windows update. You might also want to look at the subversion you have. AA8 is up to either 8.1.7 or 8.2. You can check in the help file and then download any updates from Adobe.com>downloads>updates>Windows Acrobat. Be sure you install any updates in order, they are no cummulative unless it specifically says so.
