Acrobat 8 crashes - Reading Untagged Document & Preferences Menu

Hey everyone.
I have installed Adobe Acrobat 8 (8.2.1) Standard on my Win 7 (32-bit) laptop. It was working ok for a short while but when I open a PDF I have a pop-up come up "Reading Untagged Document" and the whole program crashes shortly after. Also I have noticed that when I go to the Preferences menu (edit>preferences) the program crashes shortly after the preferences menu displays.

THis is a copy of a post by Rich1UK it worked for me. it is a workaround though, not a true solution. i hade the same issue moving from vista 32 to Windows 7 64.
Hey everyone. I have been having trouble with Acrobat 8 Standard on Windows 7 32-bit. Version 8.0.0 worked fine but when I try to update from this version I have had a problem. When I open a PDF I have a ‘reading untagged document' popup window open and shortly after the whole program crashes. If open a PDF document when I hold down the shift key the program works fine. However I have also found that if I choose to run the program as an administrator (permanently as an option) it works fine and it no longer crashes. Don’t ask me why but it seems to work. Maybe this can help someone!

  • "Reading Untagged Document" but... I don't have a screen reader

A few weeks back, I started getting this dialog every time I open a PDF. "Reading Untagged Document", asking me to set the Reading Order Options.I have no idea what triggered it, but it seems to be something to do with setting up the files for visual assistance or screen readers. I don't have any assistive technologies installed or enabled as far as I know, so this is really annoying.
I see that there is a checkbox to "Always use the settings from Reading Preferences" and don't show the dialog again, but there is no "Don't use assistive options at all" preference, and I am concerned that something is set up wrong and that would just be hiding the problem. Allowing it to continue (and presumably checking the box) takes time to tag the document. I also suspect it is modfiying the fonts a bit and that isn't acceptable, so I don't want this to be the default. I do not see any options anywhere that I can set to turn this off.
I see that several people have described similar problems, but I do not see anyone responding with a  fix, or even an explanation of why this comes up all of a sudden.
    Two questions:
    1) Why does Acrobat think I have assistive technology installed and how can I tell what is triggering this?
    2) How can I get Acrobat to always assume "No assistive technology - period."
I have Acrobat Pro 9.4.0 on 64-bit Windows 7 Ultimate.

There is a work-around fix which I found once and had to look up so many times that I did a screen shot and saved the file! This annoyance has been addressed several times, leading to the question: Why doesn't Adobe fix this **&^(*&^U problem in the menus? There is also a "complaint" email address which has also been listed, which is in the quoted fix below. Several of us must have complained; I have. BTW, since the latest update (9/23/10) I have to find and turn off even more files. Here's the fix as I got it from these forums:
"Another option is to disable the plug-in responsible for this:
    "Go to C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 8.0\Acrobat\plug_ins
and rename either accessibility.api or readoutloud.api to accessibility.old or readoutloud.old resp.
Doing this means you'll lose the other accessibility/read out loud features, but it will prevent the content preparation message.
    Report complaints at: https://www.adobe.com/cfusion/mmform/index.cfm?name=wishform"
That said, I have had to look at several other apparently related files, and turn them off, too, to stop the annoying problem. I have also turned off "readoutloud.api" to .bak, and also "makeaccessable.api" which I have also changed to .bak.
End of problem! I LOVE having the intruder stopped, like pulling out a sliver!
    Happy computing!

  • Reading untagged documents keeps popping up

My computer has Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit and Adobe Reader 9.4.3.  When I open up a pdf, a window Reading Untagged Document pops up wanting me to take an action.  I have looked at all of the preferences as to how to turn this off and have not found it.
How do I turn this annoying pain off?

Unselect the "Confirm before tagging documents" checkbox from the "Reading" preference category.

  • How do I turn off the "reading untagged document" prompt?

Assume this is a new feature added in one of the multitude of updates that I get prompted for?  All of sudden today, everytime I open a PDF file from an email, I get the "Reading Untagged Document" pop up that's telling me my document is "untagged and must be prepared for reading".  Uhhhh, no it doesn't because I can read.
    thanks..

There is no way to turn them off as Adobe, in their infinite wisdom, assumes everyone wants to see this as it's part of Assessibilty.
That said, there is a work around, but it involves removing or renaming files in the Adobe install directory.  Basically you want to remove or rename the following files:
    <your_adobe_installation_path>\Reader\plug_ins\Accessibility.api
    <your_adobe_installation_path>\Reader\plug_ins\MakeAccessible.api
    <your_adobe_installation_path>\Reader\plug_ins\ReadOutLoud.api
The easiest method is to create a "backup" folder somewhere (it can be in the Reader folder) and simply move those 3 files there.  The benefit for this is Adobe Reader runs a lot faster and the annoying document preparation is disabled.  Why Adobe doesn't allow users to disable these through the preferences is beyond me since that's the first thing I think everyone does after installing Adobe Reader.

  • Getting rid of "Reading Untagged Document" dialog

I scan documents to PDF soley for personal use.  What can I do to forever banish the "Reading Untagged Document" dialog:
It is driving me to distraction since it ALWAYS somes up if I open a PDF created from a scan.

I do found the same symptom in ALi 6.5 and above portal. At first I thought it was browser security settings problem. But after trying Firefox/Opera/Chrome/SeaMonkey/Chrome with no luck, I think it's nothing to do with browser. It should be server side settings or gatewaying issue.
I captured the header info, hope someone can shed some light:

  • Adobe Reader / untagged document / assistive technology

    Hi,
I created a package for Adobe Reader 10.1 which then applies 10.1.3 during install.
I noitced when I open a PDF file on my Citrix servers, I get a message saying I'm opening an untagged document. I also get an message about Accessibility or Assistive Technology.
I didn't see any options in the Customization Wizard for these options.
Since these Citrix servers will be provisioned and we're not saving profiles, users will get this all the time.
Does anyone know how to turn these off in the package?
    Thanks

This is probably because Reader detects the presence of assistive technologies on the workstation. See the blog below for workarounds:

  • Adobe Reader 11.0.03 crashes every time I open a PDF.  I see the grey box saying Reading Untagged Do

Adobe Reader 11.0.03 crashes every time I open a PDF.  I see the grey box saying Reading Untagged Document then it crashes with the message that Acrobat is not responding.  I have Windows 7 Professional.  I have tried uninstalling and re-installing several times.  What should I do?

    Hi,
Could you please let us know if you are using any 3rd party plugin for Adobe Reader? If so, can you please temporarily remove the same and see if you are facing the same issue.
If you are not sure about the same, please do the following:
    1. Navigate to the Reader installation folder. Usually its C:\Program Files\Adobe\Reader 11.0
    2. Ensure that Adobe Reader is not running and delete the entire "Reader" folder
    3. Initiate a Repair transaction for Adobe Reader from the Control Panel > Programs and Features.
Also, it would be great if you could let us know if the issue is PDF specific or does the issue happen with all documents. Do you observe the same issue with the below mentioned PDF as well:

  • Document Preferences

On page 19, in the Acrobat reference manual, ref: in “Document Preferences/Save Settings/Save As Optimizes For Fast Web View Restructures a PDF document for page-at-a-time downloading from web servers.” So my question is, when I save a document as a PDF, is it saved ‘as is’ or saved with its definition losing some of its quality, like after using ‘OCR’, and then the after-effect is clearly noticeable…? Is this action for my end or the end user, whom received the PDF I sent and downloaded it; optimized, restructured…? What is meant by, ‘Restructured’…?

You might want to check the Acrobat manual for a better overview (you have been there), but my understanding of optimizing for web view would be related to both graphic resolution and transfer process (like interlace graphics so that they load faster for display. The actual statement in the manual is that it states the document is downloaded page by page so that you can have a page up for viewing while the rest download. So the way that things are put into the PDF are changed in the order to allow this single page load at a time. That would be a restructure of the PDF, just changing the order of things.
You have mixed a bunch of things together with the addition of the OCR. The latter has resolution aspects as well as replacing visual graphic text with a replacement text or putting the text in a hidden layer behind the graphic. The latter even has the option to compress the graphic.
So I am not really sure what the question is. I have the impression you are not sure what to ask either.

  • When I compare 2 documents Acrobat 9 crashes

When I compare 2 documents the progress bar will come up and will not disappear.  Eventually the following error will appear
    Acrobat.exe - application error
The instruction at "0x0000195a" referenced memory at "0x0000195a".  The memory could not be "written".
The above error also comes up if I click on the Progress bar for Document Compare.
Acrobat then crashes.  We are running Acrobat Pro 9.5, and have this happening on multiple machines
    Thanks

Hi, I have had a similar problem in Acrobat 10.1.9.22 for *specific files*, and talking to the Adobe tech support, they were also able to reproduce the crash with Acrobat 11 with these files, so it sounds like this bug is definitively not fixed yet.
    The bug:
    - When comparing 2 documents (View | Compare documents...), after some progress, Acrobat crashes (on my Windows 7 machine, it says "the application stopped working", the exception reported for me is c0000005 which is according to Google a memory access violation code). This will happen only on some *specific* .pdf documents (though it will be systematic for these). I am able to compare other .pdf documents fine without any issue.
** Current workaround** (thanks to tech support about this): You basically 'clean up' these bad .pdf documents by converting them to postscript and then back to pdf:
    Instructions for Acrobat X:
    For each document, do:
    1) File | Save as | More options | PostScript
    2) Then (in Windows at least), right click on the .ps file and choose "Convert to Adobe PDF" to convert it back to .pdf.
Now the convert the two documents should work fine with these 'refreshed' documents (hopefully).

  • Reader X 10.1.1 slow Preferences menu

I have Acrobat Reader X installed on both Windows XP SP3 and Windows 7 SP1 machines.
On both scrolling the Edit\Preferences menu is very slow. The options are not directly displayed, but seems to be created and slowly appear.
I already tried to disabled Protect Mode and disabling the Enhanced Security. That didn't work.
Any tips ? Waiting for new version ?

If everything else fails, you may want to try the following:
Run this fix from Microsoft: http://support.microsoft.com/mats/Program_Install_and_Uninstall Uninstall all traces of any versions of Reader.
Download the full installer of Reader from http://get.adobe.com/reader/enterprise/

  • Appending new pages to signed documents now makes Acrobat 9 and Reader 9 mark signature as invalid

    Hello!
I have developed a service that appends additional pages to existing PDF documents. Some of the documents the service works on happen to be signed. As the service appends the pages using incremental updates, the signed contents are left untouched. This makes Acrobat 8 and Reader 8 display the signature state as "valid with subsequent changes" which is ok and no one complains about.
Now along come Acrobat 9 and Reader 9, and all of a sudden the signature state is "invalid" which my users do complain about. Telling them that inspecting the signature state details they can see that the signed content still is untouched and the actual change is recognized to be some appended pages, doesn't help either as they in turn forward the documents to their customers who don't accept the documents if the Adobe Reader sais the signatures are invalid.
Does anyone know a way new pages can be added to a signed document without having the new Adobe program versions choke on them?
Even a hint that involves adding some flag to the original unsigned document or the signature itself would help as the users in question can tweak those processes. Due to the nature of the workflow, though, signing unfortunately must happen before my service can add the new pages.
    Best regards, Mikel.
By the way, the signatures in question are regular approval signatures, nothing fancy, especially not certifying signatures (which indeed can forbid any changes or at least any changes but some form fill-ins and annotations)...

    Hi Fritz,
In the interest of full disclosure, I got the answer to the problem from one of my distinguished colleagues, I'm just the messenger in this case.
The problem is that the form adds some items to the Arzneispezialität / Zusatztext combobox which are there during signing but the form doesn’t remember that it did this on the next form open.
Since this field is included in the MDP+ signature and the field has changed in the re-opened version vs. the signed version, the MDP+ signature becomes invalid.
XFA has a feature that remembers these kinds of things for you but it is turned it OFF. Please open the attached screen shot to see the control in question.
So, you can either (1) turn this feature ON (Automatically), or (2) write some script to clear the combobox items prior to signing or (3) write some script to repopulate the combobox items on the subsequent open to match the items that were there during signing.

  • Can't apply redaction! Problem reading this document (16) Acrobat 9 pro

I am trying to apply redactions to sensitve data. I go through all the steps, mark it for reaction etc.. but when I click to "apply redaction", I get the error message "There was a problem reading this document (16). I can't find an answer to this anywhere!
The file I'm using originated from a CD sent to me from our retirement administrators. There are no restrictions on what I can do with the files.
I've tried this on 3 different computers, using both Acrobat 9 Pro (with most current updates) and Acrobat 10 Pro and I always get the same error message. Even when I extract one page, rename it and try to manually redact (without using search and redact), I still get the same message.
Any ideas???  I really need to redact social security numbers!
    Thanks
I'm using windows 7 pro if that helps...

Can't believe I didn't think of that! It worked!

A "quick" fix that worked for me was to uninstall Adobe... then download the base install for Adobe Reader 11.0.
Then download each of the individual updates and run them sequentially.
I've installed back up to the last security update which is version 08 and have been able to do normal Save As operations.
You will have to disable automatic updates in order to stay at version 08 until Adobe resolves this issue in a later release.
