Acrobat 8 in Windows 7

I recently upgraded from Windows Vista to 7 and Acrobat 8 functionality is almost entirely broken. I am running Acrobat Standard 8.2.3.   I've twice attempted program removal, fresh reinstall, and install of all available updates.
Encountered problems and corresponding error messages:
- Attempting to open .pdf files in my browser (Firefox 3.6.8) fails, with message "The Adobe Acrobat/Reader that is running can not be used to view PDF files in a Web Browser.  Please exit Adobe Acrobat/Reader and exit your Web Browser and try again."
- Converting PowerPoint 2007 files to .pdf using the built in utility fails with message "An error occurred while trying to print to Adobe PDF."
- Printing to the Adobe PDF printer fails with message "Invalid "Adobe PDF" printer properties: Do not change spooler settings.  Please select "Print directly to the printer" option (from Adobe PDF printer properties "Advanced" tab)."  I can't find this option to change it.  Additionally, Adobe PDF keeps adding new printers - Adobe PDF, Adobe PDF (Copy 1), etc - I'm now up to 11 Adobe PDF printers, probably one for each update.  I've seen this before in Vista and as long as I chose the right one (not necessarily the most recent), I could print.  This is no longer the case in Windows 7.

I assume you are using a 32-bit system. If it is 64-bit, that may be part of the problem. As for PDF Maker, it apparently does not work in Win7 and you have to print to the Adobe PDF printer. Some folks have been successful with the installation and you might want to search the forum to find their posts. You might try to print to the Adobe PDF printer with print-to-file selected. Then open the file in Distiller to create a PDF. If that works, then you will know it is an issue with AcroTray.exe. I am not sure of the full functionality of PDF Maker from within Win7 with AA8. If you upgraded to OFFICE 2007, that might be part of the issue also, though AA8 will work with OFFICE 2007 on VISTA.
I may not have helped a lot, but maybe a small nudge is all you need.

  • How to Merge 1 PDF file  to 50 PDF together not one by one. Using Acrobat 9 Windows xp.

Hi, How to Merge 1 PDF file  to 50 PDF together not one by one. Using Acrobat 9 Windows xp.

Depending on just what you are trying to do, you can also use DOCUMENT>Insert Pages to add multiple documents or simply drag and drop the documents into the current document (OK, I have not tried this one).

  • Prevent Ctrl-W from closing Full Acrobat Search window

When I do a Full Acorbat Search on a folder tree, it can take quite some time for all the hits to be found, and quite some time to work through the hits.  Usually, multiple PDF files are opened as I work through the hits.  As I close the PDFs with ctrl-W, it is very easy to accidentally close the Full Acrobat Search window, which means waiting forever to re-do the search and find my way to my current spot in the list of hits.  I find it highly inappropriate for ctrl-W to close the Full Acrobat Search window in the same way that it closes PDF files.  It is especially risky in Windows 7, where the window frames are translucent and the window with the focus is highlighted in a way that makes it very difficult to distinguish from the windows without the focus.
Is there a way to prevent ctrl-W from closing the Full Acrobat Search window?  I am using Acrobat Professional 8.

    Thanks, Dave.
I'm finding other inconsistent behaviour that is exacerbating the problem. If I close the last PDF file with ctrl-W, the search window stays open.  If I close the last PDF file from the task bar, boom, the search window gets clobbered too, which entails another lengthy re-search.

  • Open Acrobat with Full Acrobat Search window opened

Is there a way to set Acrobat to always open with the Full Acrobat Search window opened and active?
Seems like there ought to be a way to embed Acrobat configuration parameters like this, using some extra URL syntax or something so that Acrobat could be launched and configured for a task (like Full Acrobat Search) with one click.

Your options would be under the Document Properties>Open for the specific document and EDIT>Preferences>Open (or such) for your default use.

  • Acrobat XI Windows 7 - unable to (copy and) paste form fields to a different pdf.

To maintain a consistent appearance and function in the forms I create for various departments, I copy a few form fields  (text, checkboxes) from an unrelated Acrobat PDF. Then I paste those fields into a different PDF document that I am making fillable.
I do this because Acrobat does not allow setting a default for certain attributes when creating form fields, i.e. an unchecked scroll option, a default font other than Helvetica (in Acrobat 8, 9, and X). Plus it is time-saving to copy and paste fields that are the same in another PDF, like name, address, phone. etc.
We just updated to Acrobat XI and Windows 7 and now I cannot paste copied fields onto a different PDF.
Using "replace pages" is not applicable as I am pasting to an entirely different form and copying form fields with the settings I use.
Is this a glitch or is something new that was not in Acrobat 8, 9, and X?
Also, question regarding this forum entry -  http://forums.adobe.com/message/5638333#5638333 - which is somewhat different from my current question.
The PDF creator could not paste copied fields on other pages of the same PDF. Was this ever resolved so that copy and paste worked as it has for the last 3 versions of Acrobat?
    Thanks!
    Joanie

Gilad:  You're right: when the fields are different, such as a checkbox and a text field, and you try to title them the same, Acrobat gives you a message. I received no messages, the field names are not the same or I missed one and Acrobat is no longer messaging about it.
My question is different. Acrobat XI will not let me paste any field copied from a different PDF.  I've been doing that for 5 years in three different versions.  Maybe Acrobat XI has a new process for that, which I could not find in Acrobat help. Maybe it's because all forms now have extended rights automatically in Acrobat XI and there is another method to copy common fields to other PDFs.
Any thoughts about the new Acrobat XI? It's different in many good ways, but different.
    Thanks for your ideas.

  • Acrobat and Windows 8.1

We are currently running Windows 8.1, IE 11 and Acrobat Professional 11.0.0.9.  Whenever we attempt to view a PDF in the browser we get the "unable to download.  The system cannot find the file specified" error message.  In order to fix this, I need to either reset IE settings or go to Manage add-ons and disable to Adobe PDF Reader add-on and then re-enable the same add-on.  This would be a fine solution, but it has to be done multiple times throughout the day.  We tried rolling Acrobat back and installed Acrobat X, but that will not work as Adobe no longer shows up in the ribbon since that add-on ( PDFMOfficeAddin.dll) version is not compatible with Word 2013.  We need a workable solution and I have yet to find anything helpful online.
    Please advise.

  • How do I fix Error 1602 in Adobe Acrobat X (Windows 8.1)

I just did a clean install of Windows 8.1 (64-bit) on my Dell laptop with 8GB of RAM and an i5 processor.
I then installed Adobe Acrobat X from the Adobe download site and used the product key that I have.  The install completed successfully and I've used Acrobat to review and edit a few documents.  Everything seems fine.
The issue I'm having is that Acrobat X has downloaded software updates for me to apply.  However, when I try to apply them, I click on Install and then receive the following in a dialog box:
    Update Failed
An error occurred.  Adobe Acrobat Updater will try again later.
    Error:  1602
I have researched a fix on-line, but those fixes are for Windows XP and Vista for Acrobat 8 and 9.
I would appreciate any help you all can provide.
    Thanks,
    Mike

try renaming the arm directory for your acrobat x using the info for 8 and 9,

  • "Save As" Dialog Box in Acrobat X/Windows 7

One of the best things about Windows Vista and 7 is the much-expanded and much-improved Open/Save As dialog boxes.  They are much more efficient and much easier to work with, especially as you build huge document libraries.
When I installed Acrobat X I was very excited by the assumption that a post-Windows 7 Acrobat build would utilize Windows 7 dialog boxes.  Oh was I wrong.  It seems that Acrobat X still utilizes the old Windows 2000/Windows XP dialog boxes.
Does anyone know of a way to force Acrobat to use 21st century dialog boxes?  Or am I doomed to remain stuck in 1990s file navigation hell?
    Thanks.

This is really unbelieveable that Adobe is apparently unable to detect the version of Windows that they are running on and alter the Dialog box to suit! I can only imagine that their code base is so bad and riddled with old legacy stuff that their developers are unable to make this change without breaking everything. In which case, why even bother to bump to a new major version of X ?
    Why do we support this?
Chris Cox, your answer of "We've been trying to - but we still have to support XP and Vista." is unacceptable. You know how to detect that you are running on Windows 7 and you can still support XP and Vista. Any developer out there know this.

  • Acrobat Professional Windows 9.1.3 Crashing in Preflight Droplet

    Hi,
I created a preflight droplet using Acrobat Professional 9.1.3 in Windows XP SP2 and when I run the droplet I'm getting the message "DDEHandler unhandeled exception caught!". This message appears in every scenario I tried:
      - Acrobat running before the file is dropped in the droplet icon
      - Acrobat not running before the file is dropped in the droplet icon
      - Acrobat running before I started the droplet in the command-line
      - Acrobat not running before I started the droplet in the command-line
Eve scenario was tried with a pre-built profile and a custom profile. Nothing works!!!!
If I run the same preflight profile normally in Acrobat (not as droplet), the preflight runs ok, with no error.
    Any clue?
It's a trial Acrobat Pro. I'm planning to buy a license if the preflight works...
I just downloaded Acrobat Pro for Mac and I found a very similar crash (of course, with a different error message but with the same conditions) and there's a thread opened in Acrobat Mac forum since February with no solution from Adobe. I'll look for a competitive solution, it seems Adobe isn't interested in provide a decent solution.
The Acrobat's preflight tool is made by a german company, Callas Software, and this company sells similar preflight products (with additional functions and higher prices). Callas' products work very fine in Mac and in PC.
If you need a scriptable preflight, please forget Adobe Pro 9....
    Best regards,
    Lorenzo

http://forums.adobe.com/message/2907499#2907499 – as you say the same error occurs in OS X. Here is the corresponding mac-thread with a bit more information (applying both to Windows and OS X). Note that despite the error Acrobat DOES perform the preflight, but has to be restarted after.
It is an issue with Acrobat 9, and the possible (not very good) workarounds can be summarised as:
    Use Acrobat 8 instead
Check the box for making a summary PDF
    Do not generate detailed reports
If you are scripting etc. you might also find a way that automates restarting Acrobat after each preflight (yay...) or that closes the summary PDF created after each preflight (if that options is used).
And yeah, I do hope Adobe fixes it as Acrobat does have a whole lot of powerful preflight/fixup tools built in and it's a shame the droplets are broken.

  • PDF Opens Fine in Acrobat Reader (Windows), Won't Open in Acrobat Reader (Playbook)

Hi.  Anyone have a suggestion for a PDF file that opens fine in Adobe Acrobat Reader on one platform (in my case, both Windows Vista and Windows 7), but won't open on another (in my case, Blackberry Playbook)? This is a camera operation manual from Pentax: I have downloaded it from Canadian, US and Japanese websites (different file names, same file size), but always get the same result.
Here are some of the details:
    1. I can see the PDF file on both platforms, and it's the same size on both platforms (i.e. it's not a copying error creating a null-sized file on the Playbook).
    2. Technically, you could say it "opens" on the Playbook, because Adobe Acrobat Reader launches... but the document reads like a zero-page blank file.
    3. All the other PDFs I've ever used on the Playbook are fine: I have PDFs with hundreds more pages than this one, and they read and open OK.
I would get around the problem by saving the PDF in a different format, but password protection is preventing me from doing that.
Any suggestions you can offer will be welcome.
    Thanks.

Hi Kenneth, I am having this same issue but I am in a domain controlled environment.  What I discovered is that I had to go to the actual exe file in C:\Program Files\Adobe\Reader 10.0\Reader\AcroRd32.exe then right click on the exe, run as local administrator.  Then I got a pop-up talking about this protected mode that I have seen in other places.  I chose to ALWAYS open with protected mode disabled.  Then my reader opened and worked perfectly.  UNTIL I closed it and tried to open it again as my user.  My problem is that I can't even get to the settings as my user to be able to disable protected mode.  It seems the setting change is user to user not system wide.  I hope this helps.  Hopefully though I can get some help on being able to disable protected mode for the whole system.  I currently can't find a registry key...there must be one!!

I have both Acrobat Reader XI (including latest updates installed) then installed Acrobat XI and did the updates.
    Any help appreciated.

I'd like to add to this thread. I created an account just for this issue. My major frustration with Adobe began yesterday when 11.0.08 security patch was released.
Now my environment has 100+ computers and I deploy this using the best practices using Adobe's guide, via an AIP and deploy these updates via group policy throughout my organization.
So prior to yesterday afternoon my entire environment was working perfectly fine on 11.0.07 - installed throughout using AIP with GPO.
So I download 11.0.08, install that to a new AIP and then deploy new policy to install 11.0.08.
Two users reboot and get 11.0.08 installed, upon launching Adobe, it prompts for Serial Number, now I already had the serial number in the transform mst file, so I log in and sure enough the valid serial number was not validating. Then I uninstall/reinstalled, same problem, then tried to go back to 11.0.07, same problem, wouldn't validate the damn serial number. Now at this point I figure it's an issue with Adobe's validation servers. Spent 45 minutes on hold for a first level tech to basically tell me what I assumed was true and that they couldn't give me an ETA. He told me to download and install the trial or Pro version. I'm like - I have 100+ workstations, how the hell am I supposed to do that. So I removed the 11.0.08 GPO and luckily it didn't get pushed to more than 2 clients.
Checked back in at 10PM last night and the serial number worked. So I then went to test out the upgrade and fresh install on 4 workstations. 2 worked fine with 11.0.08 AIP install. 2 are having this issue of Adobe crashing immediately with them Faulting Module amtlib.dll, version: 6.2.0.46 error. Now I've been installing/reinstalling/uninstalling for the last 4 hours with versions 11.0.07 and 11.0.08. Two machines are fine, 2 are having the problem. So now I'm about to install 11.0.0 and see if I can launch Acrobat. I'm thinking it might be an update or some setting somewhere, however I am using the adobe cleaning tool as well after I do the uninstall.  I'm not sure what to do if I can get the fresh install from 11.0.0 to work, I have 100+ workstations to deploy. At 50% success rate for the GPO update to 11.0.08 do I wait until the next update comes out or take my chances and push this out and possibly have to manually install this 50 times? Waiting for someone from adobe to chime in here. It seems to me that this problem might be related to something more on the windows side, perhaps one of the many Microsoft updates or Flash updates that occurred in the past two days as well?
Adobe please help us out. Pro works fine, but Standard is having issues!!!!!

  • Acrobat 9 windows 7 adobe toolbar missing

New Dell, Windows 7 nothing special or tricky, installed Adobe Acrobat 9

Understood but there is no toolbar in IE8, whereas before in vista and XP I always had the Adobe toolbar to use. It simply isn't there, and I don't know how to reinstall it. A 'repair' did nothing. all references assume the install creates the toolbar for IE8 or whatever. I can create a pdf per page but again, the toolbar was key to capturing the entire page.
