Acrobat 8 unable to update windows installer errorcode 1642

I am facing a servere problem with updates to our CS3 DP installed clients as of this week and hence acrobat 8. The issue concerns both OS's Win XP pro 32 bit and Win 7 pro 64 bit. After succesfull install of CS3 DP, an update request results in a pop message:
"There are no updates available at this time.
Please note that some updates for the following products cannot be determined at this time:  Adobe Updater"  On the initial installe this popup is followed by a eventlog in Program eventid 1024, were the errrorcode 1642 is mentioned.
I have read posts in here concerning the error 162 and tried a clean install on a brand new workstation win7 pro 64 without Acrobat reader and only fabrik installed windows updates thus i rule out any recently Microsoft updates coursing the issue. i have tried with combitions of older Acrobat reader  eg 9.1 as well as 10 all with the same result in the end "There are no updates available at this time." I haven´t tried the update to Adobe Updater to version 6.2 since it is for CS4, but i am almost certain that is this update that courses aour problems.
Any hints or suggestions are welcomed..

>> ... Acrobat v8 is no longer supported.
So: this is completely excruciating. I've got an original Acrobat 8.0.0 installation CD, genuine purchase, with 24 character registration code. It installs properly, and has done so on every new OS installation since. Up to now the update process taking me from 8.0.0 to 8.3.1 had been tedious, but it has worked.
Now, because a page in the calendar has turned, I'm stuck with 8.0.0? What a lunatic policy decision. Even if v8 was no longer supported or developed, updating to 8.3.1 shoulkd still be possible (I mean, it is necessary, if security is to ne maintained ...)
Summarising:
1)    Help -> Check for Updates results in the response
"There are no updates available at this time. Please note that updates for the following products cannot be determined at this time: Adobe Updater"
2)    Downloading ALL the updates 8.1.0 -> 8.1.7 -> 8.2.0 -> 8.2.6 -> 8.3.0 -> 8.3.1 from the download centre and starting at 8.1.0 yields:
"The upgrade patch cannot be installed by the Windows Installer service because the program to be upgraded may be missing, or the upgrade patch may update a different version of the program. Verify that the program to be upgraded exists on your computer and that you have the correct upgrade patch."
Is there something missing between 8.0.0 off the CD and 8.1.0 off the web? I'm absolutely raging.

  • 9.2 ITunes Update " Windows Installer Service Could Not Be Accessed" HELP!

I'm running Windows 7 64 bit OS system and I have no problems installing or uninstalling anything on my computer EXCEPT Itunes. I have not been able to install the new update to 9.2 and I need to before I can get the new Iphone software for my new IPhone 4.0 tomorrow.
Please help, this is my work phone and I have gone to every support place possible to fix this.

After much searching I found the following solution...it worked for me. So simple you would think the Tech guy at HP I spent an hour on the phine with would have known it. Good luck!
This is the solution that worked for me:
    Go to this registry key:
    HKEYLOCALMACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\MSIServer
    Look for
    WOW64 and it's value.
    Is it 0x00000001 (1) ?
This value tells Windows Installer only to deal with 32-bit installers
and to return you an error whenever you try to install something that is
64-bit. To fix it, just set the value to 0. So you will see in your
    editor:
    WOW64 REG_DWORD 0x00000000 (0)
After changing the value to zero, restart your Windows Installer Service
    by using services.msc or reboot.
This simple solution of changing the 1 to a 0 allowed me to finally
    install Itunes on Vista 64

  • Updating Windows Installer to Install Drivers

So I've partitioned my hard drive, installed Windows XP, but when I try to install the drivers, It gives me a message saying that I need to update the Windows Installer. So I tried my Windows XP reinstallation disc and it said the same thing, so I tried to update the installer so I could install the drivers. The problem is I need internet to update the installer, and I need to install the drivers for Airport. Is there any way I can get around this?

    Hi,
sounds to me like you used either a XP version prior to SP 2 (Service PAck 2) or a manufacturer-bundled version that originally was sold with another computer.
XP with SP2 and non-bundled is the minimum requirement for BootCamp.

  • Unable to open Windows installer file sql_rs.msi

    Hi all,
I'm installing SQL Server 2008 r2 Enterprise edition in Windows server 2008 R2 for TFS setup.
Previously i have tried Express Edition of SQl server.
    Later it was all uninstalled.
I'm facing an issue during the installation, Unable to open the file specified sql_rs.msi file.
Kindly someone help me out on this.

    Hi,
According to your error message, this issue might be caused by the corrupted setup file, please check if your setup file is corrupted or not. If it is corrupted, please try to download it again and choose “Run as administrator” to reinstall. If the setup file
is complete, the installer may have problems accessing the files on the C:\SQLFULL_ENU_x64\setup folder, as Prashanth’s post, you could try to copy the setup file to a different directory where your account has full control permission to this folder, then
choose “Run as administrator” to rerun the file and check if the error still occurs.
    Thanks
    Lydia Zhang

  • I can't seem to print to PDF from other programs.  I have Acrobat 9 (with latest update), Windows 8, and when I try to print to PDF it defaults to a  *.prn file, and when I change the name to *.pdf the file that it produces doesn't open.

I can print to PDF using PDF995, but not the regular Adobe PDF that comes up in the list of printers.
I've tried repairing the Adobe installation, but that didn't help.

It might help to understand the process, though I am almost surprised that AA 9 worked for printing on Win 8 (thanks for that info). Normally the print process is to print to the Adobe PDF printer (without the print-to-file checked). The process does create a PRN file that is actually a PS file. AcroTray (running in the background) completes the process of taking the PS file and running Distiller in the background to create the PDF. If you have problems, you should be able to print to file (assuming the print driver works -- but you indicate it does) and then opening the PRN file in Distiller to create the PDF.

  • ITunes 10 Installation Error: Windows Installer

I'm sure this is a common issue, but I have yet to even solve this problem and I am in need of assistance. Topic with same issue: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2599360
I have uninstalled a previous version of iTunes to upgrade to iTunes 10. When I finished downloading it, I go into the installation process. Right in the middle of the installation, an error message pops up with this:
+*There is a problem with this Windows Installer package.*+
+*A program required for this install to complete could not be run.*+
+*Contact your support personnel or package vendor.*+
I've tried many solutions while I lurked the internet:
    -Run As Administrator
    -Installed the Latest Updates
    -Updated Windows Installer
    -Cleared Unworking Registry Files
And some I may have forgotten, but I'm sure I covered all of it.
I'm still given the same issue after all that.
Is there something that still needs to be done?
I'm running on an Acer laptop with Windows Vista.

    Thanks for the help, polydorus!
But now I have another issue.
Before I had the iTunes problem, my sister gave me her iPod Touch 3G, which has been synced on her laptop before. I resetted via the Reset Options in the iTouch, then after a reboot, it came up with the iTunes Logo, a +, with the USB iPod Connector. So, I did what it said. I pulled up iTunes and plugged the iTouch in... The iPod Touch doesn't appear on the list. I tried unplugging it and putting it back in, resetting iTunes... then I upgraded iTunes, and now I'm still having the same problem.
So, my question is now... How can I get iTunes to find my iTouch?
I tried uninstalling Apple Mobile Device, but unsuccessfully uninstalling it, I repaired it after being able to upgrade iTunes. Could that be an issue?

  • Acrobat 7.1 update fails -- Windows Installer problem

This is followed by a message from the Adobe installer that it has failed because "Missing source media. (Error 1612)"
