Acrobat 9 combines files alphabetically. Why?

I recently upgraded to Acrobat Pro Extended 9 from Acrobat 7.
In 7, when I wanted to combine individual PDF's to one PDF, I would select them, right click and choose "Combine in Acrobat".  It would then order my PDF's in the order that I selected my files, and give me the option to rearrange them if I needed.  Now when I select my files and right click to combine, the files are always listed alphabetically no matter how I highlight my files to be combined.
I don't like this feature.  I print individual PDF's in an order in which I want to combine them.  When I select all of those and right click to combine, I don't want to have to rearrange out of an alphabetical order.  Is there a way to set the default order to the actual order in which I highlight my files to be combined?

I am not sure how to do this given what I am  doing.
Scenario 1:  I have scanned a bunch of pages into a single pdf file and at my leisure move the pages to different files.  Not sure how I would use insert pages in this situation.
Scenario 2:  I open a monthly statement and move the pages into another file containing previous months statements.  Would I have to actually save the file first before I could follow your suggestion?
Is there anyway of determining what fonts I need in order to check if I have them?

Subject: acrobat 9 pro seems to be damaging files, why?
To test the font issue, try using insert pages to add a file to another one rather than the drag and drop. There could be a bug in the latter, or just that fonts don't work well with that process, particularly if you do not have the fonts on your system.

  • Beginner Acrobat Combine Files questions

    1. I'm trying to combine files that includes an IRS fillable form pdf file. I believe the warning when I try to Combine Files calls it an Adobe XML file.
Is there a way to combine into one?
Can I change it to a "regular" pdf and then combine?
    2. As another alternative, I tried to create a PDF Portfolio. I know nothing about PDF Portfolio. I got the files into PDF Portfolio but not in the correct order. Read the Help and it does not look like I can reorder. Is that true?
    Thanks for any help

Bill@VT, thank you very much for the help. Not very user friendly of the IRS. Surprised... guess not.
A beginner forum question since I'm new here or rather an infrequent visitor to the Adobe forums.
Did you send me the last post or did it get forwarded as a result of my Forum Preferences?
I haven't been getting post replies and I'm trying to figure out what setting I have/had in error. Didn't get your first one, did your second.
    Thanks..

  • Acrobat is not letting me combine files anymore. It says an error has occured while converting. Why

When I try to combine my files, acrobat starts to get the files ready and then it shows that it has failed because of some error occurring. I even tried to combine files I have combined before and the same has happened to them, so I know that it is a problem with acrobat and not my files. How can I rectify this.

    Hi daicheese,
Are you trying to combine files in Adobe PDF Pack (either online or via Reader) or in the Acrobat desktop application?
If you're using Reader, please choose Help > Check for Updates and make sure you're using the most recent version.
If you're using PDF Pack, please clear the browser cache and try again, or try converting using a different browser. Also make sure there are no firewall or proxy settings that are limiting your access to the Internet.
Please let us know how it goes.
    Best,
    Sara

  • Acrobat X: Combining Files to PDF hangs and refuses to load

So I am hoping someone can help me.  I bought this product and installed it yesterday (10/16/12).  I am running Windows 7 OS, and had no problem with the install. 10.1.4 is the version of Acrobat (more specifically) that I am working with.  Today, when I go to combine files, It asks me to chose: File, Folder, etc...
When choosing "file" the program opens the explorer window to go find the file, but never fully loads.  Then it just hangs forever.
This is primarily why I upgraded, since my Acrobat 8 couldn't handle the new Office 2010 stuff and refused to recognize those files.  Now, I can't even get ANYTHING to load to combine.
    Ideas/suggestions/fixes?  Thank you!

    hurricane_heide,
If you just bought Acrobat X, you may be elligible for a free upgrade to the latest and greatest Acrobat XI.
Obviously it should not happen. A few typical things to retry.
    (1) Reboot. [Fixes all sorts of glitches]
    (2) Turn off your virus and spyware protection does it work now?
    (3) Try a clean install of the program. Run the Acrobat Cleaner tool. http://labs.adobe.com/downloads/acrobatcleaner.html
    (4) Try as a different user.

  • Acrobat XI Pro combine files window not visible

So I was trying to combine files into one pdf this morning, but Acrobat's window for doing so would not appear. I could minimize it, and see it down on the bottom of my dock, but when I tried to maximize it, it would disappear. (I'm on a Mac). Everything else on the app was working perfectly. I:
    -checked all preferences
    -tried to re-arrange window configurations
-made sure my 2nd monitor was up as it might have been last time I used the program
-opened pdfs and then tried to combine them
-quit and re-opened the application several times
-tried again to access the 'combine' window from every angle I could
-rebooted, then went through it all again
-went to adobe to check for updates. Application manager says Acrobat XI is up to date. Won't let me do anything.
So, I decided to uninstall it so I could start fresh and re-install. Uninstalled, went back to the Cloud. App manager says Acrobat XI is up to date, and still won't let me download or anything else.
Rebooted. Went back to the Cloud. Same thing again.
I would very much like to be able to use this app. I have things to do...

I figured out how to recreate the preferences and it fixed the problem.  Here is how I did it:
    Quit Acrobat
In Finder hold down "option" and open the "Go" menu.  Pick "Library"
    Open "Preferences" folder
Drag "com.adobe.Acrobat.Pro.plist" to your desk top
Reopen Acrobat and try to merge 2 files
If it works you have solved your problem.  Acrobat will replace the missing file with the default.
If it doesn't work you can drag the original folder back into "preferences" and keep trying to figure out what was wrong.
Part of the answer was in the Acrobat workspace instruction.

  • Getting "save as" dialog box to auto populate when combining files in Acrobat X Standard

In acrobat 9 the "save as" dialog box auto populated when I combined files, in Acrobat X it creates binder1 and then I have to click file and save as.  Is there a setting that I am missing so I do not have to do the extra step of file, save as?

    Hi cp-daytona,
Please elaborate your issue and if possible then please attach the screenshot.

  • Error Message when Combining Files to PDF in Acrobat XI-Pro

    Hi!
I am trying to combine multiple CAD files to PDF and keep encountering an error message.
I'm using the Combine Files to PDF, dragging in the corresponding files (.DWG files) into Acrobat and then clicking the Combine button. They convert to PDF but a dialog box immediately pops up:
As I'm the person creating the .pdf document and am using Acrobat XI-Pro to do so, what am I doing wrong to continue to receive this message?
    Thanks for the help!

    Hi TTownWriter,
Try creating a combined file as follows :
    - Open one of the files .
    - Open thumbnail pane of the file via Left hand tools pane .
    - Go to options and Insert the second(or subsequent) files to the opened file using "Insert Pages" menu option.
    - Save the file.
    Refer the screenshot.

  • How to Combine Files in Acrobat XI Standard?

I see that you can combine files in XI Standard. But can you right click on multiple files and hit "Combine files in acrobat"? Or do you have to open one file, then search for the others, and combine them that way.
That's how it works with XI Pro that i downloaded for a trial. But i have Windows 7 64 bit, and that has made my old Acrobat 8 do some weird things, including taking away the choice of right clicking to combine.
Can someone please tell me if this works? Thanks!

It might with AA8 if you have installed the updates. Without the updates AA8 may not work correctly. A few have reported it works for them on Win 7, 64-bit. But you are the first I have heard asking about combining files.
Are the files PDFs or something else. It may be if they are MS OFFICE files, then your AA8 is not compatible with the MS OFFICE you have for this function to work.

  • Acrobat 9 Pro - Combine files dialog box - order of files

Hi! For my job, I need to combine files into a single PDF that are numbered a certain way, but the way Acrobat orders these files mixes them up when I try to sort by name. For example, it orders them as 09-12167-1, 09-12167-10, 09-12167-11 and so on. Is there a way I can change the order? Or do I have to rename them? 09-12167-001, 09-12167-002, 09-12167-003 etc. orders things the right way.
    Thanks for your response!

Prior to the last upgrade to Adobe Pro 8.0, we were able to select multiple files in Windows explorer and then right mouse click and select the "Combine supported Files..." and the Combine window would open.
After the last update this functionality stopped working. You would select the 2-3....files and click on the "Combine..." option and nothing would happen. No errors, no combine screen, nothing.
I downloaded a trial version of Adobe Pro 9.0 and it does the same thing on one machine and on another it works fine.
Does anyone know of a setting or parameter that would cause this behavior?
    Thanks

This issue orignally occured on Acrobat 9. I repair installed 9, then uninstalled and removed the Acrobat folder from the program data folder, rebooted and reinstalled 9. This did not work. Next I upgraded to 10 rebooted and attempted the combine and it still failed. I logged in as the administrator and tried again and it still crashed. I am not sure where else to go with this.
I am currently on Acrobat X Standard version 10.0.0
    You help is appreciated.

First of all, update to the latest version of Acrobat X.

  • How to retain numerical order (Of file names) when combining files in Acrobat (9) Standard

How to retain numerical order (Of file names) when combining files in Acrobat (9) Standard, please see the attached screenshot for a clearer explanation.
I understand that if we prefix all files with leading zero's this will probably resolve the issue but I just wondered if anyone new the answer. The ironic situation is that version 6 has no problem.
I have spent over an hour with techincal support who were unable to provide me with an answer

It is not clear how you are trying to do the order. Have you tried to select a set of files and then use the arrow buttons to move them in the list? If you select the heading, that will typically reorder the files by that heading and undo everything you had done before.
You should be able to select groups of files and move them up and down in the list. All of those options appear on your view, so what is the real question?

  • Possibility to execute Acrobat Pro's "Combine files into PDF" function from within SAP?

    Good day.
Presently, a company uses Acrobat Pro to manually combine files such as *.pdf, *.jpg, *.doc, which have been downloaded from SAP's Document Management System, into one pdf file. I would like to know if it is possible to automatically execute Acrobat Pro's "Combine files into PDF" function from within SAP (ECC 6.0) application system. I'm wondering if this could be achieved from a program via OLE (Object Linking and Embedding) or RFC (remote function call).
Thanks in advance for your thoughts and inputs.

Yes, you can combine PDF files via IAC/COM methods.

  • Acrobat 8: How to prevent "Combine Files" from adding a header?

    Hi All.
I am using Acrobat 8 (Win XP SP II) and am having a problem with the "Combine Files" feature. In the past, I've used this function to create hundreds of PDF files from thousands of individiual PDF's. It worked great. But now, suddenly, Acrobat increases the landscape page height from 8.5 to 8.8 inches, and then adds a header containing document name and date info.
I don't want this header. I've looked all over Acrobat and Distiller and converter preferences but can't seem to find how to shut this feature off. Can anyone help me?
To see an example, go to:

    Many Thanks!
    Gary Wedemayer

I have multiple single-page PDF files lying in a folder; I hit Files-->Combine Files, select the relevant PDF files, and let it rip using any of the quality settings (low, medium, high- makes no difference).
But I see nothing in the Combine Files dialog box that is relevant to this kind of header, so it must be hidden somewhere else. Can't find it for the life of me, tho!
If I have to I'll revert back to Acrobat 6.0 or write a Javascript to combine the files for me, but I know I can do it straight up in Acrobat 8 'cos I've done it many times before.
    Thanx.

  • Suggestion: Please make the Combine Files dialog modal to the Acrobat application instance.

I often combine files into a PDF with Acrobat (XI). It is annoying that the main Acrobat window is shown while the Combine Files dialog window is open. I often review other PDF files during the process of selection for later combination. It happens far too often, that I accidentally close the Combine Files instance main Acrobat window during the process and subsequently lose the already specified file selection. I would suggest to make the Combine Files dialog modal for the Acrobat instance so that users would have to close the Combine Files dialog first, before closing the instance. I would appreciate this in a future update. Thanks a lot.
