Acrobat 9 License: No Service Bureau

I just noticed section 4.6 of the Acrobat 9 License Agreement, which is:
"4.6 No Service Bureau. You will not use or offer the Software on a service bureau basis."
I'd be interested to hear any opinions on what this might mean. The term "service bureau basis" is not defined in the agreement or used elsewhere in the agreement. I've found a number of different definitions, so I'm unsure what to make of this.
Thanks,
George

I am an IP lawyer and drafting license agreements is one of my specialties.  The term "service bureau" (http://www.thefreedictionary.com/service+bureau; and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Service_bureau) was an somewhat archaic term dating back to the early days of computing (i.e., 1960's) when having the huge mainframes and software programs were so expensive that only big universities and companies could afford them.  IBM and other mainframe manufacturers offered a time-sharing arrangement to allow users access to these computers, which became the first offical service bureaus. See this quote from WikiPedia:
"Centralized hosting of business applications dates back to the 1960s. Starting in that decade, IBM and other mainframe providers conducted a service bureau business, often referred to as time-sharing or utility computing. Such services included offering computing power and database storage to banks and other large organizations from their worldwide data centers."
The term's use (or its concept anyway) has been revitilized, but the latest nomenclature is SaaS or Software as a Service.  Obviously, if the software author is the provider of the Saas, it does not care about prohibiting the service bureau because it controls the software's use.  However, if a licensee has a broad enough license to offer the use of the software to third parties (ala a service bureau), the licensee can undercut the software author's ability to receive license fees from the ultimate end users.  Hence, most license agreements expressly prohibit licensees from operating a service bureau using the licensed software.

  • Acrobat SDK License Agreement Question

The following is a section of the latest Acrobat SDK License Agreement from the Adobe website:
"3.2  Development Restrictions.  You agree that You will not Use the Software to create, develop or use any program, software or service which . . . (b) can both (i) communicate with Adobe Reader Products and (ii) modify or save a PDF (Portable Document Format) document (including saving any modifications to a separate file for such documents);"
Does this mean that I am NOT allowed to develop a program that both:
Interfaces with Adobe Reader/Acrobat via the Acrobat SDK for PDF viewing purposes and
Builds and modifies PDF's using third party component(s)?
If the answer to the previous question is "YES", that means I can only use the Acrobat SDK in a program that is limited to PDF viewing and printing as far as PDF issues are concerned.  That would be very restrictive for a real world application that involves PDF's, especially when I am supposed to "add significant and primary functionality" as the license aggreement also states.

How do I go about contacting "Adobe Legal"?
Also, just to clarify our discussion on some subtle but important points . . .
I understand that Adobe Reader is just that, a read-only application.  And, I understand that the Adobe solution for modifying PDF's is Adobe Acrobat.  I have components from 3rd parties that let me programatically modify PDF's.  So, from a strictly programming tools point of view, I don't need Acrobat to modify PDF's in my application.  The 3rd party components handle the PDF modification tasks.  I'm not trying to use the Acrobat SDK to modify PDF's, but rather only to view PDF's.
    So, when you say:
"You can NOT use Reader to view PDF documents as part of a software solution that also modifies the PDF using some other technology"
    Do you mean:
It is your understanding that using the Acrobat SDK for PDF viewing and 3rd party components for PDF modification in the same application constitutes a violation of the Acrobat SDK License Agreement?
    And when you say:
"Acrobat, however, does not have this limitation"
    Do you mean:
Adobe requires licensed Acrobat to be used for PDF modification in any application that uses Acrobat SDK for PDF viewing?  (In other words, PDF modification is where Adobe wants to make a profit.)
    Thanks for your input.

  • Editing multipage PDF in Illustrator for print service bureau

I have a series of 4-page PDFs that I've edited in Illustrator and resaved back into the original files, which were created in Quark (not by me, and the Quark files are not available). My client will have these printed by a professional service bureau, so I want to be sure there'll be no problems with the files I send them. If I outline all fonts, is there anything else I should be aware of?
    Thanx for any help.

This depends on your service bureau, adn if they prefer .ai files or .pdf files.
The advantge to a .pdf file is that the service bureau prints the file as is, and it is quick for them.
The advantage to .ai, is that the service bureau has more control over the file, and have more power to make changes and they can get your job done right if they want to put the time into imaging this.
I would consult your service bureau for which PDF compression works best for them. The most important thing is that you comb over your file prior to making a .pdf to check for things(eg: are blacks using consistlently the same CMYK breakdown, do you want rich blacks of 60c 40my 100K, is everything bold or thin enough, etc).

  • I can't activate Acrobat Pro license

    Hello
after the inconveniences and the impossibility to connect and sync my documents with Creative Cloud Connection, now it is the turn of Acrobat Pro to giving me trouble.
I can't activate Acrobat Pro license, so I can't use it.
After launching Acrobat Pro, a blank page that should contain the license agreement appears, but the button for accepting the license doesn't work. I have deinstalled and reinstalled several times the application without success.
Thank you to explain me how to resolve this problem.

  • Using acrobat 9 license for lesser version

    Hello,
My company has several acrobat 6, 8 and 9 licenses. We have an application that only supports version 6. We do not have any version 6 licenses left, but we do have several 9 licenses. Is it legal to install version 6 and just subtract from our version 9 licenses?
    Thank you

So if I have say 20 arcrobat 6 licenses (all with the same license key) that are all in use, and 20 acrobat 9 licenses (all with same key but obviously different than the version 6 key) with only 14 in use, I could not just install acrobat 6 in place of 9 (using the 6 key)?

  • Error retrieving Adobe Acrobat 11 license

I'm currently receiving an error message everytime I attempt to retrieve my Adobe Acrobat 11 license from the licensing website.
    'Data retrieval error!'
    Please can someone help?

I don't have a better answer, unless you are not running it as the administrator so the activation is properly stored. Just to be sure, the activation is done in Acrobat itself and not by logging in to Adobe.com -- I am assuming you activate in Acrobat. If that is so, I am not sure what the problem may be and hopefully someone else will drop by with a solution.

  • Adobe Acrobat Pro license problem

I had an Adobe Acrobat Pro license and now the program is asking for my serial and does not recognize it. I have entered in trial mode and I can get assistance directly from Adobe and cannot access the chat. What should I do?

Jmmussat, no, it is NOT a browser problem, I have tried several now.
I suspect it could be very bad luck and not a purposeful block so customers like me, with old licenses, will be forced to purchase.

  • License Validation Service

    Hi,
I am trying to run the License Validation Service Report Viewer but encountered this error
'HTTP request error' after clicking on Query.
    Would appreciate any advice. Thanks.

    Belita,
You would want to check that there is nothing else (no other service or application) that is using port 30005. You can also verify that this is the port that LVS "thinks" that it should be using by checking the ..\Program Files\SAP\SAP Business One LVS\LV Service\SAP.LVService.exe.Config file.  You can open this in Notepad and verify that port 30005 is in this file. Prior to the port in the LVS Report viewer, you can try the server name or the IP address of the server.
If you are still having issues, you may want to un-install and then re-install the Adobe AIR Viewer.
Also, just to verify, if you look at the LVS Db via the SQL Management Studio, do you see data in the tables such as CumLicenseInfo, DayFormUsageList, etc.  If you do ... then data is being collected.

  • Acrobat Connect Pro Meeting Service Plans

    Dear all,
We would like to join the Acrobat Connect Pro Meeting Service Plans (Per Host Plan).
We are in Hong Kong and we will use Connect to communicate with our client in Europe, Australia and South America.
We would like to know how does the system decide to use which server in location.
Also, if we had record the meeting, will our client in South America play the recorded meeting with a good performance?
    Best Regards,
    Ivan

As we are in Hong Kong, when we open a meeting room, it will use the nearest server and that means the server used will be in Asia.
Then, no matter where our client's location, they will connect to the server in Asia to have web meeting.
Also, if the meeting is recorded, it will be stored in the Asia Server.
If our client want to see the video, they will connect to the Asia Server.
    Is my understanding correct?
If so, can we choose the server location?
We can do something to our broadband to make sure it is good enough for Web Meeting.
However, we can do nothing to our customer side broadband.
If we can choose the server location, for example, server in Europe, then, it can definitely help improve the performacne with Europe client.
    Please kindly help advise.
    Best regards,
    Ivan

  • Acrobat DC license downgrade

I just purchased an Acrobat DC license.  Every other machine that we have with Adobe has Acrobat XI.  I tried to install XI with the serial I got from DC but it did not work.  Is there a proper way to do this so that I do not have only one machine with a different version of Acrobat?

    You can't.
Acrobat licenses are application-specific. They don't give you any rights to install previous releases or different versions (DC vs XI, Pro vs Standard etc.) - and Adobe only sells the current version on the website. Some resellers are still offering Acrobat XI 'boxed' licenses, or you could subscribe to Creative Cloud - which does allow installation of either Acrobat DC or Acrobat XI.

  • Acrobat Pro License

  • Acrobat Connect Pro Meeting Service Plans - licensing and pricing questions

Hello! I was hoping someone here might be able to help me with a few nitty-gritty pricing / licensing / functionality questions, in regard to the Adobe Connect Pro Meeting plans.
    1) The pricing is $55/mth/host - if you have, e.g., 5 hosts, but make more than 5 recorded meetings available on-demand, will they all be accessible at any given moment?
    2) 25 concurrent users is the limit; is that per recorded meeting? e.g., if 15 people access one recorded meeting and 15 people access another recorded meeting, all at the same time, would you be over your limit?
    3) If you do happen to go over your concurrent user limit, what will happen for the 26th user? will they be denied access, or will you simply be charged an overage fee?
I'd appreciated any help or insight you have to offer!

I assume you got this pricing from the on-line website?  I ask because when you buy it from Adobe enterprise sales and through our corporate channel then this is all different.
    Answers:
    1. Yes. On-Demand recordings don't apply against your license.
    2. No. That 25 limnit is for concurrent live meetings. It's unlimited for on-demand recordings. That 25 limnit is completely set by the kind of license you are buying. if you purchased thru the software channel versus on-line then that number would be 100 not 25. On-Demand recordings have no limit.
    3. If you exceed the concurrent license, then the 26th person trying to join will receive a pop-up message saying the room limit has been reached and they will not be able to join. Yes, denied access. No way to charge a fee for overage.
