Acrobat 9 Portfolio can't be printed by Reader 9

I have addressed this issue with Adobe Support and have either received references to KB documents that are totally unrelated, or have been told to just uninstall Reader 9 and install Reader 8, since Reader 8 works ok. In my opinion that answer is unacceptable, and I wanted to find out whether any one here can help me further.
Our company has a number of PDF Portfolio documents created in Acrobat Pro 9. When they are opened by Acrobat Reader 9, in certain situations there is a problem printing the document. When there is a problem, the user will see the Adobe warning "For the best experience, open this PDF Portfolio in Acrobat 9 or Acrobat Reader 9, or later." in the preview window prior to printing. (Remember, we are opening it with Reader 9.) If the job is sent to the printer, that warning message is all that prints. This problem is universal in our company (to my knowledge) regardless of the computer used or the username used to login. I have addressed the specific scenarios below.
I have attached a PDF Portfolio which has this problem, as well as a PDF of what prints (or previews) when one of the following scenarios occurs:
- Portfolio PDF opened in browser, XP x86 and x64 (Reader 9 installed), attempting print from File menu
- Portfolio PDF opened in browser, XP x64 only (Reader 9), attempting print from toolbar print button
- Portfolio PDF saved to local disk and opened in Acrobat Reader 9.1.3 directly, XP x64 only, attempting print from toolbar or File menu
Any other scenario (non portfolio, portfolio opened directly in Acrobat on x86 systems, print from right-click context menu, print from "Print Form" button added to PDF document, etc) yields a successful print. Also, opening document on system with Acrobat Reader 8 the user will see the warning when first opening the portfolio, but the individual documents are accessible, readable, and printable with no problems.

I didn't realize XP x64 was unsupported. Thanks for that info. The problem in XP x64 is the same as x86 until update 9.1.3, so for now I might just back them back down to 9.0.0 and turn off automatic updates.
On the x86 machines, some of them may have been upgraded from 8 to 9, but I have tested for this problem on a machine that has only had Acrobat Reader 9.0.0 installed since Windows XP was installed, and the problem still exists.

    Urgent Question
In Adobe Acrobat 7.0, can Bookmarks or the list of the Bookmarks, in the left task pane, be printed in any way?   If not, is there some other way to print Bookmarks that is not too difficult to achieve - like a list or an Index of all the bookmarks or export the bookmark list on the left to a Word document or something?  "Help" in Adobe Acrobat 7.0 is no help with this issue.

    Hi,
    Download this PDF:
    http://partners.adobe.com/public/developer/en/acrobat/BatchSequences.pdf
It is Adobe's "Batch Sequences" documentation for Acrobat 7.
    Next; visit:
    http://www.adobe.com/devnet/acrobat/?view=documentation
Scroll to page bottom, right side -
Download the PDF "Batch sequences". This is the Acrobat 8 documentation.
There is no significant difference between Acrobat 7 & 8 documents.
Just good to have 'em all while you can get 'em.
    Download "batchseq.zip"
    Unzip.
It has same content as "batchseq.zip" for Acrobat 7.
You want to use the "List all Bookmarks.sequ" sequence.
*Read* what the documentation discusses for this or any of the other sequences.
Some are "generic" and need a tweak.
"List all Bookmarks.sequ", when properly configured/used, provides an output PDF that contains all Bookmarks of a "source" PDF.
    Works with Acrobat 5.x, 6.x, 7.x, and 8.x.
Print to hardcopy from this PDF.
Does not work properly in Acrobat 9.x
There are work arounds for this.

  • Password protected document created in Acrobat XI (Mac) can't be opened by Reader XI (Windows)

I have a document that I created and password protected using Acrobat 11.0.2 (Mac).
I can open it with the same password using Reader 11.0.2 (Mac) but not Reader 11.0.2 (Windows).  On Windows I get an "invalid password" message.
    Anyone else found this?

I can tell you in my testing that my results were consistent regardless of whether I typed the hyphen at the keyboard or pasted it in from a text document.
So, that still leaves us with "is this a bug?" or "is it a prohibited character?"
Obviously, in these days of concern over password strength, it is important to understand the range of available character set, so we can select effective (and legal) characters and not have to deal with the trial-and-error of trying to learn which characters to avoid.
I am also still confused as to why the exact same password, entered in the exact same manner succeeds on one platform and not another.  Unless the input dialog is silently converting the character (which I think could only be diagnosed with a debugger), results should be consistent.  After all, the "P" in PDF does stand for "Portable".
Do you have the resources to try and reproduce my test case?  I would be curious to know if the problem occurs both ways or just Mac->Windows.

  • User can't print from Reader, tried multiple troubleshooting steps

Working with a client who can no longer print from Reader (v11.0.10). Windows 7 Pro x86 machine.  Tried printing after each of the following steps:
    Rebooted PC
    Restarted Print Spooler service
Uninstalled/Reinstalled Reader v11 (from fresh download)
    Set PDF/A option to "Never"
Set Advanced option for "Print as image"
Uninstalled v11 and installed v10 (from fresh download)
Set v10 option to "Print as image"
In each instance, the printer queue shows no activity following a print command from Reader.  No document is hanging or even appearing in the queue.
Test prints from other applications (MS Excel) and from the printer properties Test button both work flawlessly. When test printing from other apps, the documents are briefly visible in the print queue.
She gets no error message.  It simply does not print.  Have attempted with multiple documents and sending to different printers.
Next step is going to be installing third-party PDF reader software and scrapping Reader altogether.  Please advise if there are any additional troubleshooting steps before abandoning this product.

No dice. Tried disabling protected mode and still could not print.
Installing Foxit Reader (http://www.foxitsoftware.com/Secure_PDF_Reader/index.php) so at least user can print PDFs.  I will keep monitoring this post for any further suggestions anyone may come up with.

I an running it from a MacBook Pro with OSX 10.6.3
I called Epson support and they could not help me.
However they suggested that I try using Adobe Reader.
Well that works OK if I choose to print the document as an image, but I would prefer to just be able to work within Acrobat Pro.
Does anyone outthere have any settings within Acrobat Pro that would enable duplex printing?

  • Can not longer print pdf from Acrobat Reader

All of a sudden I can no longer print pdf files to my printer.  It is shared by all the computers in our household and any time I try to print from any of the computers now, instead of printing it creates a prn file instead.  I can find no option in the printer properties where selecting or deselecting something to enable or disable printing to files.  All the systems are either MS Vista or Windows 7.  Though there are commands that allow sending a prn to a network printer, they require a named print server, which we don’t have on our peer-to-peer network.
It is interesting that I can create a pdf file in Photoshop on my system and it will print from Photoshop.  I can also print the “problematic” documents for Photoshop, which I only have on one system. But anything created in Acrobat will not print natively from Acrobat reader.

In the Print dialog click on Advanced, then uncheck Print to File.

  • Why can't I print to a printer ?

I have a Windows 7 Sony and Acrobat 9.  When I attempt to print to my printer from Acrobat a window labeled "Print to File" opens and nothing goes to the printer. Prior to this I could print from Acrobat, and I can print from Word, Powerpoint, etc.  I have updated Acrobat, tried many different pdf files, and rebooted several times.  This problem just appeared in the last couple of days, and is really frustrating.  Anyone else ever experience this?  And can help me out?

Thanks!!!   This solved the problem.  I was so focusing on selecting a real printer that I never even saw the box.   I suppose I thought that the printer type would dictate whether a file paper was printed, but i guess not.  Thanks again!

  • Can No Longer Print to PDF: No File Created

    Greetings, All,
(I had this problem months ago too, but it went awayApple Update?)
Recently I did something stupid on my Mac (still new to Mac from Windows) and I had to reinstall OS X (Install and Archive). After Installing OS X 10.5.3, I updated back to 10.5.6. Then I reinstalled CS4 Master Collection and installed the updates for that. This was a couple weeks ago.
I seldom need to print anything, but when I do, I print them to PDF. Now, when I do a command-P in any application (Safari, TextEdit, Mail.app, etc), nothing happens. Acrobat creates no file. I am using the Adobe PDF 9.0 driver. There is a work around: In the lower-left hand corner of the print dialog box, I can click on PDF > Save as PDF. I get prompted to name the file twice and then it does print. However, trying to research this issue, someone else mentioned the same thing and was told that's Apple's PDF printer. I want to print using Acrobat 9.
Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong?
    Thank you for any help!
    Keith

Wow! At least it's not just me!
I've been trying to do various tests, and now my results are a bit different:
    Going off Candace's notes:
    1) Doesn't work for me. This is what I used to do and want to do again: create a PDF from any application by clicking Print (eg, the Print link on web page) or pressing command-P. No file is created now.
    2) I didn't even know this option existed. It worked for me, but I don't want to print my documents there. I want to be prompted for a name and folder of my choosing in the dialog box.
    3) Oddly, this morning after reading Candace's response, I now only get prompted with one dialog box, not two. Again, I don't want to do this. I want it to work as before where after invoking Print I would be offered a dialog box asking me what to name the file and in which folder to create it.
Thanks, Candace! I appreciate your post!

  • I can no longer print any document in PDF format. Not sure why

I can no longer print any document in PDF format. Not sure why? When I try to print, the document saves to my hard drive as a PDF and will not allow me to print? Never had this issue before. Any thoughts?

  • Can't see printer name in the print dialog box as the printer name is too long

This is actually causing siginificant pain as I am using a tablet and moving around a number of floors/buildings needing to be able to print from where I am.
When printing from Acrobat reader, the print dialog box that comes up does not have a horizontal scroll bar and does not fit in the names of the printers in my organisation. We are unable to change the printer name, so it basically means that when using Acrobat, we can't select a printer.
All other windows applications show more characters and also have a horizontal scroll bar in the print dialog box so you can scroll across to see the rest of a long printer name. Why is acrobat not using the standard windows print dialog?
Has anyone come across this? Help!

This is the Acrobat forum, not the Reader forum. In the future you should check there. I am not sure why you can not change the printer name, unless you do not have administrator rights. The name of the printer has nothing to do with where the print copy is sent. It is just for the purpose you mentioned of identifying the printer to print to. If you are not the administrator, ask your IT folks to change the name for you and explain why.

  • Why can I not print PDF files in color?

    Windows 7 Ultimate (x64
    Adobe Reader 10.0.11
    HP Color LaserJet CP1215
I downloaded U.S.IRS tax Form 1040 for 2014 from Forms and Publications (PDF).  All the text is black. Much of the form has a pale green background that does not extend to the edge of the page.  There are fill-in areas that have a pale purple background.  At least that is the way the form appears when I view it on my PC.
When I try to print the form in color, however, all the text is white except for the word "Form" in the upper-left corner.  The green background prints as solid black.  The fill-in areas are white, which makes the white text invisible.  (When I print merely in black-and-white, the text is black, the green background is a very light gray shadow, and the fill-in areas are white.  Thus, the form looks okay.)
Also, if I attempt to print a PDF file that contains color images, the images print strangely.    Images are stretched horizontally and then cut off at right edge of the actual image box.  Furthermore, text is white against a background of alternating, narrow, vertical, black and white stripes.  An example is page 8 of the AVG 2015 User Manual from http://download.avgfree.com/filedir/doc/AVG_Free/avg_free_uma_en_2015_15.pdf.  (Again, printing this in black-and-white, the text is black, the background is white, and the image appears as an appropriate black-and-white approximation of the actual image.)

Do you have Acrobat installed? Can you open it and load a PDF? If so, select print and select the desired printer. If this does not work, then tell us the error message you get. It would help to know the OS and version of Acrobat. Air is a separate product (and I still don't know what it does, sorry).

  • Acrobat Pro XI Mac won't print a .pdf file, but Apple Preview will print correctly

    Hello,
I have Acrobat Pro XI for Mac.  recently I've run into pdf files that will show the document on screen ok, show up on print preview screen ok, but when I send it to a printer I either get:
    1.  no printout... the document passes through the printer queue ok, but nothing comes out (no blank paper, nothing).  no data seems to even reach the printer/print server.  no error.  the print job basically vanishes into thin air like the job was never sent
    2.  prints out with all the characters of a text substituted with squares (again, no error. just prints squares instead of text)
But when I print the same document using Apple's Preview program on the same machine, the file prints out fine.
I experience this problem with two different Macs, with two different OS versions.  Again both machines will print the .pdf file fine using Apple Preview, but not with Acrobat Pro XI.
I've searched for this problem, but no one seems to have this problem. I've tried just printing one page, etc., and no difference (won't print, or print wrong using Acrobat, but prints fine using Preview)
the files are typically sent via e-mail from a vendor, or a web downloaded form (invoice, forms filled out.  some are secure, some are not).  and these are from multiple sources.
Any ideas what might be the problem, and how to fix this?
    system:
Mac Pro (early 2008) and MacBook Pro (mid-2011)
MacOS 10.8.4 and 10.6.8 (multiple computers have this same problem)
    Acrobat Pro XI, 11.0.04
printer: HP LaserJet 5MP (yes.. old.. but it works) via HP JetDirect + print server on  LAN

I just found this solution on another board, I tried it  (I removed the same file listed below) and it worked for me....
Safari won’t save or print PDFs: how to fix

If Safari won’t save or print PDFs (but views them without any problems), you probably have an Adobe PDF plug-in installed. In Safari, go to Help->Installed Plug-ins and do a search for “PDF.” If you have anything with “PDF” in it other than “WebKit built-in PDF,” that is probably the culprit.
On my computer, the problem was “AdobePDFViewerNPAPI.plugin”. To remove it, I quit Safari, did a Spotlight search (Command-Option space) for that file name, and then dragged it to the trash. When I restarted Safari, I could print and save PDFs again. You can also manually find the plugins by going to the system “Library”  folder (the one at the root of your hard disk, not in your user folder) and looking in the “Internet Plug-Ins” folder.
    I’m on OS X 10.8.2, running Safari 6.0.2 (8536.26.17).

  • Adobe Acrobat 9 still can't convert Word 2003 files?

http://forums.adobe.com/thread/673769 is a link to the same discussion a year ago.  There was no option for me to add a reply, so I had to create a new discussion here.
HAS THIS PROBLEM BEEN FIXED?  Fujitsu's pdf printer S1500 comes with a full OEM version Adobe Acrobat 9 Standard, which I just installed.  Immediately it caused problems with Word 2003, just as the above discussion link illustrates.  Clearly that's a problem with Adobe Acrobat not being able to read SOME fonts.  Where is there any bug fix for this?
Why would a customer want to upgrade Adobe Acrobat, if he can't get font support?  In my case, it appears that GREEK FONTS are not supported, which makes no sense, if the fonts are installed in Windows.  The pdf-converter knock-offs like Smart Creator PDF Pro can convert just fine -- so why not Adobe Acrobat?  Who wants to pay more for Adobe, if it is worse?
So again I ask -- has this problem been fixed?  Very unprofessional, if the answer is 'no'.
Very unproductive, too.  I spent hours on computer crashes, reinstall uninstall detect and repair, just like the posters in that thread above, from a year ago.  Businesses don't need this kind of aggravation.  IS ADOBE EVEN LISTENING?  Very unprofessional, if the answer is 'no'.

First, this is a user-to-user forum and not one for Adobe. They are sometimes around, but not on a regular basis. The lengthy discussion in the link did not apparently get folks to a solution. I did not see your handle in the discussion.
Two common errors were suggested, one the color setup and the other was font errors. Keep in mind that just because you have a font, it might not be able to be embedded in the file. That is due to copyright restrictions. The font file has to have the permission built into it to be used. That may be the case for any font that you download from another source. Most of the MS fonts are licensed for embedding.
Also, just because you have a font with the same name, does not mean it is the same. There are often multiple versions of the fonts, some that are useful and others not.
Out of the linked discussion, I have no idea what issues you are having -- there were many. I use AA9 with OFFICE 2007 and have no problems. I also use AA8 with OFFICE 2007. For AA7 I have a machine that runs OFFICE XP (2003). None of these have issues. To be able to help (if we can at all) it is necessary to track down the conditions when the problem occurs and possibly try to replicate it some. A few folks mentioned 64-bit systems in the linked discussion. The 64-bit systems have caused a lot of problems and generally require the updates for proper opertation.
From the point-of-view of trying to fix things without delving into the specfics, all I can suggest are a repair and then updates to the latest version of Acrobat. The updates should be able to be done from the Help menu, but if not from there you can download them from the Adobe Downloads>updates site.
Probably not considered much help at this point, but I really don't have enough information to home in on the problem. It may be that my copyright comment about fonts is really the issue (you should get an error message from Distiller if you print to the Adobe PDF printer that suggest the problem. As far as other packages, if they do indeed embed copyright fonts that do not have permission, then you are technically violating the law, even if allowed by the software. I have no idea if that is the case, but it is a possibility.

  • Acrobat Pro 9.51 Hangs When Printing to PDF from WordPerfect.

Seems Adobe Acrobat 9.51 is hanging when attempting to do a conversion to PDF by printing to PDF from WordPerfect (using X3/X5).  Problem is it also hangs the rest of the PC.  Have to attempt to kill the process (though it is so slow I end up having to restart the PC).  Anybody have any thoughts on this.  Attempted to do a repair (no help), removed the program and reinstalled (also no help).  Thought maybe another process was killing this but turned off all startup items.  Maybe I missed some uninstall items I need to manually remove?  Any help would be appreciated.

Knowing the OS would be helpful as it may be a factor.
If the OS is Windows 7 Acrobat 9.x will not provide full functionality.
Regardless, WP file format(s) are not compatible / supported by Acrobat PDFMaker.
Corel uses its own publish to PDF process rather than anything Adobe.
With Acrobat installed you can print to the Adobe PDF virtual printer.
If you are not doing a File - Print and selecting the Adobe PDF printer then you are using a WP rather than an Adobe process provided by Acrobat.
    Be well...
