Acrobat 9 Pro - Closing Causes Extended Hard Drive Activity

This issue started after a year or more of clean running and automated Adobe updates.  My installation is up to date according to Adobe.
Dell Precision 4300 laptop, 4 GB RAM, Windows XP Pro, all patches etc. up to date.
The problem I am seeing only occurs when I attempt to close Acrobat.  Using Windows Task Manager to obtain some of the details, the summary is as follows:
View a 200 KB single page PDF document.
Shut down Acrobat (simply closing the document and leaving an empty instance of Acrobat open doesn't cause any trouble).
Acrobat window remains open for a protracted length of time, hard drive is active constantly.
At this point, Task Manager shows acrobat.exe using 28 MB of memory and this number remains constant while the window is visible on screen.
Acrobat disappears from the screen.
Hard drive activity continues, but now Task Manager shows the 28 MB of memory ramping up.  It eventually peaks and holds at 336 MB!
During this time, the I/O Read and Write associated with the Acrobat.exe process continues to climb.  In this test, the final number is 1,100 MB and 700 MB respectively. Seems a little extreme for a 200 KB PDF!
The acrobat.exe process eventually disappears from Task Manager and the hard drive activity ceases.  This takes a couple of minutes and happens every time I close Acrobat!  I have got into the habit of simply leaving an empty window open, or killing the process via Task Manager.
If I try to do a shut down of the system immediately after closing Acrobat (while the drive is still working hard), I will get a warning that acrobat.exe isn't responding, or sometimes, that font capture isn't responding.  If I wait, the process eventually completes on its own and the computer shuts down.
I have tried the 'repair installation' option in Acrobat.  No joy.  None of the other CS4 applications seem to have this problem... Photoshop just closes without any drama.
Ideas?

I have the same problem of HDD activity after closing any pdf file, whatever the file size.
I'm done with adobe acrobat..
This is not only the problem.. I installed the Acrobat 10 and I found that I cannot modify the toolbar by drag and drop and I cannot add the (properties) bar to the main toolbar (or even the buttons of the properties bar), So the properties bar still floating and when i resize the acrobat window or dock the window to the left or to the righ i have to move the properties bar over the screen...
In Pro9 the properties bar can be a part of the main toolbar, BUT sometimes the properties bar goes disabled and I have to close the Acrobar and reopen it to return the propeties bar enabled again. So, it seems to me adobe acrobat solved the problem in Pro10 by not allowing adding the properties bar to the the main toolbar...
Recently I solved the annoying options dialog box by renaming some plugin files!!
Why the Adobe Acrobat takes 2G of HDD space!!!..
Now I moved to Nitro PDF Professional software and it has all the Acrobat features of editing, viewing, drawing...etc and it takes less than 100M of my HDD...and this what Corel PDF Fusion do as well. The Corel PDF Fusion has the highlight text, editing text and page actions..etc but it doesn't have the drawing feature yet, maybe because it is v1.0 in 2011
tens of new PDF sofware in the market... Wake Up acrobat team...

    Hi 12msonti,
    Please try the following:
Delete the Adobe PCD folder and caps.db file:
    Windows:  \Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Adobe PCD
                        \Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\caps\caps.db
Launch Acrobat and enter the serial number and check.

  • Problems Installing Acrobat Pro 9.0 after Hard Drive Crashed

I am having to reinstall my Creative Suite CS 5.0 on my MacBook Pro after the replacement SSD crached and I had to reinstall the suite back onto my orginal hard drive. Everything in the Creative Suite installs with no problem except Acrobat Pro 9.0 and Distiller. After it is copied, I open it and after a few seconds I am presenting with the following message...
"Suite Product Activation Needed - Adobe Acrobat was installed as part of a suite. To enable Adobe Acrobat, please start another component of this suite (such as Adobe Photoshop)."
I have tried opening Photoshop first and then opening Acrobat, but I get the same message.
I am at a lose as to what to do.
    Thanks for any help.

    Matthew,
As you stated the CS5 version has a separate disk for Acrobat 9 and a separate serial number for Acrobat 9.  Unfortunately the error message you are seeing is usually seen when launching Acrobat shipped with either CS4 or CS5.5 as the activation of the product is tied to first launching another suite product.  Try removing the Inprogress key from the registry:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Installer\Inprogress.
Of course only do this after backing up your registry.

  • Reinstall Acrobat Pro 9 after a hard drive crash?

So I am sitting here looking at the disk I have and the serial number.  I cannot remember where we bought this and I am not sure I even have that documentation anymore.  All I can recall is that it was 2 licenses per disk.  I do know we did not buy it thru the adobe website.
Can I re-install on the new hard drive or am I going to have problems activating because there is obviously no way to deactivate the old one since the hard drive crashed?

If you have only installed once, then you still have one activation left. If you have no activations left, then you have to contact Adobe and explain that you lost the harddrive so that they can reset your activation count.

  • Memory Usage And Hard Drive Activity Increase After Latest Upgrade

I have upgraded to Firefox 3.6.15 and latest Adobe Flash Player. Then i noticed that plugin-container started to take a lot of memory as much as Firefox itself totaling around 600Mb. Then i see hard drive activity intermittently slowing down my laptop and making it unresponsive for a short period of time. I have 50 tabs open. I have disabled Flash and since then plugin-container takes very little memory and i don't see consistent hard drive activity.
I need Flash and i don't want to disable it. Is there a solution to this?

I am seeking solutions for same problem.  When playing simple online games such as solitaire my memory usage for the plug in container is 300-600 mb while FireFox may only be 80-120 (with several windows or tabs open of mostly text pages). If I disable Adobe add-ons memory usage is greatly reduced. If I understood correctly it is possible to disable the plugin container and run adobe via the old method and another user thought that would solve the problem. I do not understand how it would make a difference but if you havent found a solution you may want to try it.  See these 2 threads in the Mozilla forum:
A question and brief  explanation  and   how to disable plugin container in config
I've previously had problems with Adobe crashing Firefox . At least now with Adobe being in the plugin container Firefox does not crash along with it.
I have another issue - I can sometimes still hear the music from a game after I have exited the game and closed the window. I would like to know how to release the resources used by Adobe - kind of like FireFox's RamBack.
Well, good luck to you (and me!)

My MacBook pro won't recognize hard drive I put in it. It boots only to a white screen unless I boot to my recovery USB. If I do that then I can select my USB and my external time machine drive in the disk utility, so no problems there. But what do you think it is? It won't recognize any hard drive I put in the machine, so might it be the sata cable?

Boot the Recvoery USB, use Disk Utility to select the internal drive makers namea and size on the left.
Now select erase and select the midde option and click erase, it will take a bit to complete but it's best for the drive.
Now select Partiton tab, click the big box and Options: GUID and then Format: OS X Extended journaled and click apply.
Quit and you should be able to install OS X now with your Apple ID and password.

I had Adobe Acrobat Serial loaded before the hard drive crashed on my old PC.  I have tried to download Acrobat 9 on my new PC, but always get the message “This is not a valid serial number”.
I had Adobe 9 Standard on the old.  But what downloads from the page http://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/kb/acrobat-8-9-product-downloads.html is Adobe 9 Pro.  Perhaps this Pro version is the problem.
Anyway, can you point me to a way to install Adobe on my new PC?

  • App to monitor hard drive activity?

    Hi,
    I posted here: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2001256&tstart=0
about my Seagate external firewire 800 drive that keeps waking up from sleep, apparently unecessarily. I have seen one other person with this problem with a Lacie Drive: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=9334437&#9334437
Anyway I still can't figure out why it keeps waking, so I was wondering if anyone knows of an application that monitors (external) hard drive activity, so I can work out what it's doing when it wakes up?
    Thanks
    Nathan

Thanks Carolyn. I know it's not Time Machine that causes it to wake, and I have downloaded an app called Spotless which is supposed to prevent Spotlight from indexing the external drive. Usually spotlight will show when it is indexing, and it's not showing that when the disk is waking.
However, it could still be that Spotlight has its filthy paws on it.
I've looked into disabling Spotlight but there doesn't seem to be a way to remove it without causing problems in other apps; I've heard that Mail, for example, uses Spotlight to search.

  • After suspension of hard drive activity, my mac is unable to restart (I must shut down and restart)

when occurs a suspension of hard drive activity, manually or after a period of inactivity, this suspension seems to be incomplete (a ventilator continue to run)
therfore my mac (powermac G5, OS 10.4.11) is unable to restart, no possible action from the keyboard (I must shut down and restart)
is it a known problem ?

I have zapped the pram (5 times)
I have reformatted the hard disk
I have reinstalled all properly (with full updates to 10.4.11)
there is no more problem with classic (il was probably caused by spoiled files)
    but the suspension problem persists
it appears that it is probably not the hard disk suspension but the system suspension that is problematic :
when I set preferences so as to accept disk suspension as often as possible, but so as to avoid system suspension (set to "never"), there is no problem
does it exist a specific hardware use to manage suspension and reactivation, and is it tested in apple hardware test ?

  • Way to see how much Hard drive activity processes are doing?

    Hello
Very often in OS X or Windows, the hard drive will just randomly spin up and start doing  a ton of activity, slowing everything else down. I tried using the Activity monitor in SL, and the Task manager in windows 7, and neither seem to have a way to view which processes are reading or writing a ton to/from the hard drive. The reason I'd want to know is so if one is doign a ton in the background, I can just kill it and get it to stop slowing the rest down.
Is there a tool for Either OS that allows for viewing hard drive activity per process, or do I just not know what in particular to watch for? (I know it's not CPU% though). This doesn't just apply to my mac pro, but whatever computer I use, whether it be Mac or PC.

    Hi Chris,
maybe fseventer http://www.fernlightning.com/doku.php?id=software:fseventer:start is what you are looking for.

  • Hard Drive Active Time spikes at 100%

Hello, so recently I have been having some issues with my PC. At first, around 2-3 months ago my pc started lagging. I checked my task manager and noticed that my active time on my HDD spiked to a 100% and stayed there for about 5 minutes before going back to normal. I didn't think much of it at the time. But now, the explorer.exe started crashing and my HDD seems to be spiking from around 30 to 100% every few seconds. I tried scanning all the files with Kaspersky, chkdsk /r, I tried disabling the BITS from the service as some people suggested, nothing helps :/ Any ideas of what could be causing this?

  • Hard drive activity every 10 seconds

While troubleshooting a problem with my power saver/screen saver, I noticed that every ten(10) seconds my hard drive activity lamp flashes and a small blue circle appears on the screen (about one second).
I suspect that this is why my PC never sleeps even though the power option is set so sleep after 20 minutes of inactivity. My screen saver never activates either.
My system is an ENVY h8 1500t.
Task manager shows no applications are running but there are many processes and services running.
Any idea what could be causing this recurring activity???
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

Using "Event Viewer", I found that error events are being initiated at about every 10 seconds. There are thousands of them. I suspect that this may be th source of my problem.
    There are also many warnings.
    The errors pertain to "HPConnectedRemoteServices.exe.
    Event ID's are 1000, 1026, 7031
What is this service and how can I stop the errors?

I have a 500GB external hard drive and only 120GB Macbook. It worked fine before the latest Maverick's update. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

My guess would be it has created an entirely new backup of your drive when you upgraded to Mavericks.
