Acrobat 9 Pro very slow open files over network in Windows 7

I have installed Acrobat 9 pro on my new PC. It's running Window 7 64bit. I use it for pre-press of high-resolution files for printing. Sometimes the file sizes run into the 100s of MB.The new PC has reasonably high specs, with 6Gb of RAM and a 2.8Ghz Quad core i7 CPU and gigabit networking.
Opening them when on the local hard disk is reasonably fast. For example a multi-page 400Mb file starts drawing the first page withing 3 seconds. But opening the same file when it's on the server of our gigibit network generates a very long pause. The application locks up and dispays a "not responding" message for 2-3 minutes. The bigger the file, the longer the pause. It doesn't completely crash -- eventually it starts to draw the pages and I can work as normal.
I used to have Acrobat 9 pro on my old XP PC which was a cheap low-end machine when bought 3 years ago. (has on-board shared RAM graphics card and only 1Gb of RAM). But what grieves me the most, is this slow old machine will open the same 400Mb file off the server so much faster than my expensive new machine. There is no lock up and it begins drawing the first page after only approx 5 seconds.
The problem doesn't seem to be simply related to slow network speed. I can copy the entire 400Mb file from the server to my hard disk in only 12 seconds. The old PC is actually slightly slower copying to/from the network. If the application was for some reason copying the entire file into memory or to a local cache, this should still only generate an extra 12 second delay -- not 3 whole minutes.
Adobe Reader 9 doesn't have the problem. I can open the 400Mb file off the network on either my new or old machine within seconds.
Acrobat 9 Pro doesn't have the problem on an old G5 mac either. It's somewhat slower than my old PC but will begin drawing the first page after a few seconds,
So what exactly is Acrobat doing for those 2-3 minutes?
I have already tried:
1. changing network ports/cables.
2. disabling anti-virus software
3. disabling "remote differential compression"
4. Patching Acrobat 9 to 9.2
5. Files located on Windows servers and Mac Xserves.
Not improvements from any of these.

I think I have isolated the source of this problem. It's the Pitstop Professional 9 plug in. I un-installed this, and everything opens quicker than greased lightning. I re-installed it and it's back to slowsville.
Unfortunately Pitstop is essential to my workflow.
Until recently I did my pre-press on a Mac G5 with Acrobat Pro 7 and Pitstop 6.5. I never had this problem with slow file opening. But it seems that the delays would occur when I used the plug-in with large complex files.. So it would open files as fast as you'd expect from an elderly machine. But starting to use Pitstop would result in a prolonged period of staring at a spinning beachball.
I wonder is there any way to stop the Pitstop plug-in from initializing until it is used? So the plug-in stays inert until you select the tool from from the menus.

  • Crashing in PS CS and Quark when opening files over network

Mac Pro and MacBook Pro 10.4.8 using Adobe Photoshop CS2 and Quark 6.52 will crash or become VERY unstable when opening files from server or remote machine. Server is 10.3.9 or remote Mac running 10.4.7, all works fine IF file are copied to client machine, but cannot use -File/Open dialog. This is a network isue in relation to Intel translation, is there a fix (Rosetta?)

Try looking for some "special" characters in file or folder names ( e.g. / or ?).
I had similar problems with PPC-Apps (InDesign CS2 and 4D Client 2003) since 10.4.7 and 10.4.8. App crashes or shows strange grey boxes on the screen when I tried to open files over the network, no probs with same files locally.

  • Acrobat X Pro: Really slow opening files

There's a post with this name in a read-only section. I haven't posted here for years, but I'm having this problem. I bought Nitro PDF as my workaround. It's good software, but, goshdarnit, I'd really like my Acrobat Pro to work also. There's no fix posted over there, so I'm wondering if there is a fix anywhere? Thanks.

...I've uninstalled the trial and, following this, my system is working perfectly again.  I'm sorry but ever since version 10 of the software was released, my system hasn't been able to use Acrobat Pro without having a nervous breakdown.  It's causing trouble even when I'm not using it!  I suspect this is something to do with the software that checks whether it's a trial version or legitimate copy; unfortunately, it's active all the time (much like Vista's useless build of UAC), and so the entire system grinds to a halt.
I've commented about this issue before in previous releases, but either your team at Adobe doesn't know why it affects certain computers but not others, or you do, and simply ignore the software problem.  It's a shame, but I will just have to do everything through a service via your website from now on.

  • Acrobat 10.1.7 opens files on network drives extreamly slowly

    Computer Information
    Windows 7 Pro (64bit) SP1
    Processor: Intel i7-3820 @ 3.6GHz
    RAM: 32 GB
    Actobat 10.1.7
    Issue:
When opening a file saved on a network drive it now takes a few minutes to open, but when I move the file to my computer (takes a few sec to transfer) and it opens instantly.  This issue started today after I updated to 10.1.7 last night and we haven't made any changes to the network.  I've seen potential fixes like changing the security settings under preferences  but it nothing has made a difference.  Is there a way to revert back to a previous update?
Note:  Saving a PDF file after making changes also seems to be having the same issue.

    Hi David,
So Compressor is the only one that I'm positive does this all the time. We've had uncompressed files that have been sent on hard drives from clients, which they had captured from tape, that have also had this problem. In all cases, those were captured on AJA boards, but I don't know which application was used, or if it also went through Compressor at some stage before it got to us.
It doesn't matter which application tries to access it. Even looking at the file in Windows Explorer shows it as 0kb in size, and it can't be opened in anything, from Quicktime Player to any of our encoders to After Effects on Windows. The only fix is to bring the drive back to the mac, duplicate the file, then bring it back to Windows. That does it every time.
Here's what MediaFour has to say about the issue: http://support.mediafour.com/entries/174761-macdrive-file-hard-links-are-zero-by tes
We also have HFS For Mac from Paragon Software (cheaper, by the way), and it has the same issue.
We've got no trouble with files over SMB, other than the network bottlenecks (and we recently upgraded the network with a new Cisco switch and bonded ethernet). But SMB has so much overhead it's not practical for uncompressed files.
our SAN allows us to set up iSCSI volumes as well. Those nix most of the performance issues, but then we're basically sneakernetting without the sneakers.

Indesign CS 5.5 update to 7.5.3
    Anyone can explain me ????

Look in the upper left corner of your screen. I’ve seen instance where the program opens with nothing but a tiny window there.
If that doesn’t do it, then restart Windows.

  • Open file over network

I need to access a txt file on a computer that is on my network but I do not know how to write the path to the file.  Any ideas will be greatly appreciated.

If you can browse to your text file using Windows Explorer then the easiest is to just enable the browse function of a file path control on the front panel of your vi, browse to the file, and then run the vi. You can then save right click on the control that now contains the desired path, go down to "data operations", "make current value default", go to the diagram side of the control, right click on the control and "Change to Constant", giving you a file constant with the path to your file, if you want a fixed path.

  • My Acrobat Pro will not open my PDF Files any suggestions?

My acrobat pro does not open, anyone else out there with the same problem?

Sherbear2359 (I believe that the US has the right to arm bears so I will be very nice.)
My Adobe Acrobat stopped opening pdfs. Now in the past it was Windows 8.1 playing tricks by thinking that the Adobe software was a trial which expired
Doesn't launch after 30 days | Installed as part of a CS6 suite Tried it and it worked.
Tried the fix again now no change.
I suspect that a Microsoft patch stuffed it up. They have had a few problems.
I used Reader with open with but I want pdf to be opened by Adobe.
    Thanks

  • MacBook Pro very slow to bring up homepage, won't open programs; likely related to attempt to upgrade Java software on the Parallels side, not successful because of low C drive capacity, recommended C drive compression not successful/completed.

MacBook Pro very slow to bring up homepage, programs won't open; likely related to failure to upgrade Java on Parallels, told that C disc low capacity, disc compression recommended was unsuccesful/failed. Rebooting, battery removal hasn't helped. Can't open Systems Preferences. Suggestions?

Linc, the resident dump guru, will probably be along in awhile and provide deeper insights, but here goes for now. I'm seeing an awful lot of warnings and messages from Chrome. Any chance you could lay off that browser for awhile and use Safari in the meanwhile? No red messages anywhere in the listing. Have you tried rebooting into Mountain Lion Recovery Mode to do a Repair Disk and Repair Disk Permissions? (Cause in spite of what your config tag says, the dump indicates you are running a ML kernel)

  • Very slow open cr2-photos

After update to os x 10.9 mavericks, my macbook is very slow open CR2-files. In Quick-look or Preview.app - i have slowdown about 5sec, then photo opens. At 10.8 similar photos open instantly. Seems like something broke after update. My config: Macbook Pro 13" with Retina, Core i7 3GHz, 8Gb RAM, Intel HD 4000. Have ideas?

I am having the exact same problem after just updating to OS X Mavericks. CR2 files take ages before they are shown. In 10.8 these exact same photos loaded very quickly (instantly). In Adobe Bridge these photos show up quickly as well.
I am running a 13" Macbook Pro, Mid 2010 with 8GB of RAM, 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo.
Since I use my laptop mainly for photo editing, this is very frustrating. Hopefully there will be a fix soon enough.

  • Adobe Acrobat 11 will not open files in IE 10.0.06

Adobe Acrobat 11 will not open files in IE 10.0.06. Problem started about 2 months ago. It can open older files on computer but cannot open or downloadd any from internet. Using Office 2010. Already spent an hour with my computer tech support under warranty. Please help identify issue. Thanks

As a web designer - IMHO, Internet Exploder is absolute garbage disguised as software. This (and thousands of other threads in this and many other forums throughout the web) is just more proof of that. I've used Firefox since 2002 when it was still called Mozilla. It does about a million things IE can't and won't, and does them better, faster, and more sensibly.
Microsoft KNOWS that most corporate workstations have Windows and most I/T departments forbid installation of unapporved software, including browsers, so (by a very slim margin) IE is still the most used browser in the world, but... that doesn't by any means make it the best choice. Because they know so many people are literally FORCED to use it at work, they will not make it more functional than they absolutely have to, because they don't care if people like it or not, when they have no other choice.
On a home computer, it's different, and that's why Firefox is just a fraction of a percentage point behind IE in worldwide use, and thanks to iPhones, Safari is rapidly climbing the numbers too.
Rather than trying to work around something that even Microsoft won't bother to fix, abandon their junk and go with Firefox, Opera, Chrome or Safari. It won't be long till you're glad you did.

  • Why can't I open and retrieve my files from iPhoto and my address book after importing the files from my Power mac G5 to my new Mac Pro? I get a warning that says the new OS on my Pro doesn't open files from a Power Mac. Any idea how I can fix this?

For your addressbook, export the files to vCard on the PowerMac, then bring them over to your Mac Pro. For your iPhoto, copy the Users -> yourname -> Pictures folder to your Desktop on the Mac Pro, and open iPhoto on the Mac Pro holding the command and option keys.  Select the library file from that Pictures folder and open it.  It should import all the pictures into iPhoto as part of the rebuild process.  Other PowerPC to Intel migration issues are covered here: https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-2295

  • Aperture suddenly becomes very slow opening library

    Hi.
I've got only 100 or so photos, and Aperture suddenly becomes very slow, it take a couple of minutes now to open the library.
Just before this started to happen, I got a very short massage, saying something like, "It's repairing some files."
I wonder if there are some corrupt files there, causing very slow opening the program.
Is there any way to check this and fix this problem?
    I'm using 3.4.3, and OS 10.8.3.
    I appreciate your help.
    Hiro

I'm surprised nobody has responded to this yet. Hopefully you have already figured it out, but if you double click on the aperture library while holding down the option and command keys, Aperture will bring up a dialog that gives you three options for dealing with potential library issues: repair permissions, repair the library or rebuild the library. You should try them in that order, and it is a good idea to back up your library first (especially before rebuilding the library).
    Hope this helps.

  • Acrobat Pro V7 not opening pdfs

Acrobat Pro V7 not opening pdfs - just started happening. are there some preferances that can be trashed etc? don't tell me this will require a full reload?

    ok I tried that but still get;
"a required component was not found. PLease restore the Adobe Acrobate folder from your original CD."
Thing is, I recently moved and cannot find the Adobe CD.
AppleJack seems like a neat little application. Can it also check for duplicate files? I DL'ed a Dup Finder program once but it seems tooo convoluted to use. I couldent tell which were nesssesary files and which were simply taking up space.
