Acrobat form; how to set-up a drop down list that has catagories?

Hi,
We produce business directories.
I am working on a display ad proof template where the user has a choice of 10 main categories where each main has 5 to 15 sub-categories.
In my new Adobe Acrobat Pro 9 I understand how to create a drop down list, but can't seem to find where to tie in the sub-categories for each for the main listing.
When the main category is chosen it would only show the related subcategories. See clip below. I am sure this is easy...just find the steps in the instructions.
Thanks, Bruce

Hi Bruce,
This forum is specific to Designer, which comes with Acrobat Pro 9. It will be easier to create this type of functionality in Designer (compared to achieving it in Acrobat).
Designer creates XFA Forms, which are wrapped in a PDF. The user doesn't see any difference: eg they see a PDF which will open in Acrobat/Reader. However for user with Reader to be able to save the data they input, the form must be reader Enabled. This is a topic in itself and there are many discussions on the forums - just try a quick search.
Now to the question...
Yes, you can achieve this with some script. Basically you would need script in the preOpen event of the Business sub-category, which would look back at the selection in the Business category. Based on this value, the script would populate the sub-category with appropriate items.
There is an example here: http://assure.ly/jcTahK.
Hope that helps,
Niall

  • How to set focus on drop down list

    I've a drop donw list and when the user click on a record of the list, i'ld like to set the focus on the previous record.
    Can u help me pleassse

    I'm not sure if you can detect the "previous" element, it may be possible through tab order perhaps.
    But you could use the drop downs change event, to set the focus to any field by hard coding it:
    form.drop_down_list::change - (JavaScript, client)
         xfa.host.setFocus(form.previous_field_name.somExpression);

  • Create a drop down list that populates based on the selection form another drop down list.

    I need to set up a drop down list that is popualated (i.e. displays a certain list of selctions in the drop down list) based on the choise the form user selects in an adjacent List
    For example
    There are two drop down list field sitting side by side in the form
    1. Select State          2. Select Course
    What I want to do is have a list of states in the first drop down list (1.Select State) and depending on which state the form user selects , the second drop down list (2.Select Course) will populate with a selction of courses available in that selected state only (i.e. it will on;y show course available in QLD if QLD is selcted).
    Is this hard to do?

    Hi,
    If you are using WD Java following are steps of filling values in DD Box:
    1 Create a simple type in the Dictionary.
    2 Create an attribute "CountryNew" in the Context of type created by you.
    3 Write following code in the init method of the form:
    IWDAttributeInfo countryinfo =
                   wdContext.nodeEmployee().getNodeInfo().getAttribute("CountryNew");
    ISimpleTypeModifiable Country = countryinfo.getModifiableSimpleType();
    IModifiableSimpleValueSet countryValueSet =
                   Country.getSVServices().getModifiableSimpleValueSet();
    countryValueSet.put("IN", "INDIA");
    countryValueSet.put("US "USA");
    4 Add a Enumrated DD box in the form and bind it to the attribute "CountryNew"

  • Does anyone know how to Add a date drop down list to a pdf file?

    Can someone tell me how to add a Date drop down list in a form

    There's no built-in function that does that in Acrobat, but there are some third-party tools that do.
    The two most known ones are by FormRouter, which is free and based on form fields (but also a bit buggy), and a non-free version created by Max Wyss, which is based on a dialog object.

  • How to add a interactive drop-down list

    I want a drop-down list that will add a set of required fields based on the choice from the list.
    In this case, we want users to fill in their job title, and based on that title selected we need them to fill in specific licensing information. I haven't found a javascript (or I don't have the expertise) to make this happen. I have done forms in the past that would just hide unneeded fields, but is there a way to actually have the fields become active, or appear based on the list selections?

    Yes, it's possible. The general code would be something like this (as the drop-down field's custom validation script):
    var field1 = this.getField("FieldName1");
    var field2 = this.getField("FieldName2");
    var field3 = this.getField("FieldName3");
    if (event.value=="Value1") { // Show field1, hide the rest
         field1.display = display.visible;
         field2.display = display.hidden;
         field3.display = display.hidden;
    } else if (event.value=="Value2") { // Show field1 and field2, hide the rest
         field1.display = display.visible;
         field2.display = display.visible;
         field3.display = display.hidden;
    } else if (event.value=="Value3") { // Show all fields
         field1.display = display.visible;
         field2.display = display.visible;
         field3.display = display.visible;
    } else { // hide all fields
         field1.display = display.hidden;
         field2.display = display.hidden;
         field3.display = display.hidden;
    PS. Make sure you tick the option to commit the selected value of the drop-down field immediately (under the field's Properties - Options).

  • How do I make a drop down list of text in numbers as it is made in the example spreadsheet for comparing cars for buying where you can choose a value from a dropdown list for each car?

    how do I make a drop down list of text in numbers as it is made in the example spreadsheet for comparing cars for buying where you can choose a value from a dropdown list for each car?

    Where is this example spreadsheet? Without seeing it I can only guess at what you are asking.
    To make a drop-down list (a pop-up menu in Numbers-speak), format the cell as a pop-up then edit and add to the list of items.
    If the example spreadsheet is pulling in a dollar value based on what car you chose in the pop-up, it is probably using LOOKUP or one of the other lookup functions, getting the information from another table (a lookup table). If, instead, these dollar values are what you are choosing in the pop-up, then you need to create a pop-up with these values in it.
    The Help menu includes a link to a page where you can download the Numbers Users Manual. It also has a link to the Formulas and Functions guide. Both are useful to new users.

  • How can I get a drop-down list selection also be selected in another field with the same list but a different name?

    I have a street address and a billing address. A question is posed with a checkbox — "Is the billing address the same as the street address?" If Yes is checked, the street address automatically fills the billing fields. If No is checked, the user must fill in new information. In both the street address and billing addres, the State field is a drop-down list. How can I get the drop-down list selection in the street address State also be selected in drop-down list for the billing address State?

    Has anyone done this?

    Hello Michael,
    Thank you for your response.  My operating system is XP.  When I try to open a pfd document I just get a series of letters and symbols in a dialog box.  The top of the box says "select the encoding that makes your document readable".  I can choose Windows, MS-Dos, or other (there is a long list to choose from).  None seem to make a difference.  If I save the document to my desk top I can right click on it and choose an option "Open with  AdobeReader 9" and it opens fine.
    Thank you,

    Hello:
    What operating system does your computer use? What happens when you attempt to open a PDF document rather than saving it first? Please include any/all error messages. Also, have you tried opening documents from other locations or just one in particular?
    Thanks,

    Hi Katie,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions and the Numbers '09 forum.
    Numbers vocabulary for this feature is a "Pop-up Menu". It's available as a Cell Format, and is set and edited in the Cell Format Inspector.
    See "Using a Checkbox, Slider, Stepper, or Pop-Up Menu in Table Cells" starting on page 96 of the Numbers '09 User Guide.
    This guide, and the equally useful iWork Formulas and Functions User Guide are available for download through the Help menu in Numbers.

  • How do I edit a drop down list in a form just created?

    I've created a fillable form in Adobe Professional and my text boxes are prefilling...I did a few tests and it promts me to use the language used in my testing.  I do not want the text boxes to show prefilled options.  I checked Options tab and it does not have any values.  I am not sure why it's prefilling and how to remove it.  Any suggestions?

  • How do I make a drop down list required?

    I'm trying to make a form that has two drop down boxes that I need to make required. currently, no matter what I put as the first item or in the initial values, it won't detect when someone hasn't selected anything, because it just counts the first item as being valid. Is there a way to set the first item as not being valid? I've tried setting the value of the first item to:
    null = --please select --
    which doesn't work. Does anyone know how to do this?
    If you need more info please let me know.

    Based on above scenario i expect that you are using OOTB form components (like drop down etc...).
    If yes, then you can achieve it easly by setting up constraint value as required under "constraint" tab and dont initialize "default value" under "initial values" tab.
    If above will not help as per your requirement. Then try below.
    The form (drop down component) configured using 'selection' widget (xtype) so you can configure this property as not null by setting 'allowBlank' property as below.
    name                 type                value
    allowBlank         boolean           false
    I hope this will help you. Let me know if it doesn't work

  • How do I use one drop down list to refresh the list in another drop down?

    I am using a drop down list full of years (i.e. 2008, 2009..etc). When I make my selection from this drop down list (say for instance I select 2009) I want it to update the available data in the second drop down list. I have the query statement set up within the JSP page but it needs to be a dynamic SQL statement based off the value I selected in the first drop down.
    String sql = "SELECT GameId, GameDescription FROM Games WHERE Year = " + year;
    The variable "year" is the value I need to figure out how to assign. Now this variable is a Java variable (attribute) and Im unsure how to get the value from the previous drop down and assign it to that. Basically I need the JavaScript value from the first drop down assigned to the Java attribute "year".
    Anyone able to help me with this???
    Thanks,
    Jed

    Here are my two drop down lists. As you can see I build the second list dynamically based off the value of the year. I want to be able to assign my year to the value I select in this first drop down. How do I do that?? I only want to show games for the year I select. I currently have the year hardcoded to "2009" as you see below. How can i change that to be assigned to the JavaScript value i extract from the first select box?
    <select name="season">
    <option value='2009' selected>2009</option>
    <option value='2008'>2008</option>
    </select>
    <select name="gameselect">
    <%
    try
    String year = "2009";
    String connectionURL = "jdbc:mysql://localhost:3306/ElmwoodExpos";
    Class.forName("com.mysql.jdbc.Driver");
    Connection con = DriverManager.getConnection(connectionURL, "root", "thejedster");
    String sql = "SELECT GameId, GameDescription FROM Games WHERE Year = " + year;
    Statement s = con.createStatement();
    s.executeQuery(sql);
    ResultSet rs = s.getResultSet();
    while(rs.next())
    %>
    <option value="1"><% out.print(rs.getString("GameDescription"));%></option>
    <%

    </select>
