Acrobat icon in Windows Explorer is wrong

Hi,
I've got Adobe Acrobat 7 installed, but for some reason the Acrobat icon does not appear in Windows explorer. What appears is the 'unrecognized' program icon. PDF files still open with Acrobat, but I've noticed I cannot use Windows search to search for text strings in the PDF files. I tried reinstalling, installing Acrobat Reader, changing to other program icons and changing back, increasing the icon cache size, but I still have the same problem. I even downloaded and installed a trial version of Acrobat 9, but the problem persists.
Thanks in advance for any help.

You are talking about 2 different things. Sometimes the icons seem to change - apparently a MS OS problem. Anyway, you can fix the icon from Windwos Explere to going to the TOOLS>Folder Options>file types menu and selecting a new ICON for PDF files.
As for the text search, I think you are talking about the limited search that is the default with MS Win XP and later. There is a flag in the registry you can change to fix this so that XP will search ALL files, not just the ones in their favorite list (i.e. - OFFICE files). I ran into this a year ago after looking for a file I new existed but not being able to find it for almost a year (sometimes I am bad about filing some files). I found the flag and within 2 minutes found the file. You may still have some problems with a PDF since it is a binary file and the information should be able to be seen directly by the OS. You will have to do a search for the flag as I do not remember it.

  • Windows Explorer copy wrongly offers to merge folders

When copying a folder tree to an empty(!) location using Windows Explorer it often complains about folders already existing in the target location and offers a merge.
This is reproducible on all my machines:
    Using Windows Explorer
    select c:\windows
    copy to an empty directory
Windows shows a dialog "Confirm Folder Replace", offering to merge Windows folder with different create date
I posted about this problem a long time ago, but did not get an explanation.

We have just experienced a similar problem for the first time and think we can at least partially explain it.  We are copying the "My Pictures" folder from our c: drive to an external disc drive, where we then rename it with the date appended.
But when we tried to copy it again a month later, we got the erroneous merge dialog box, just like everyone else.  We tried renaming the old folder (with the date appended) to something completely different, but it didn't make any difference -- we
still got the merge message that said our two different folders had the same name.   Huh?!
We think the problem is related to this:  we saw in one of our Windows 7 books that "My Documents" is just a localized "display" name for the ACTUAL file system name
for that directory, which is just "Documents".  (The connection is made through some hidden Desktop.ini file that points to a system file named Shell32.dll ... don't go there!)
Anyway, this is a "feature" allows us to DISPLAY the name of the "Documents" folder as anything we want, in any language we want, without actually changing the name of the "Documents"
directory in the file system itself.  You can verify this by bringing up an old "DOS" command prompt window and using the DIR command to view the actual directory names in your user profile:  the actual file system directory name is still "Documents",
no matter what you (or Microsoft) has renamed it to be displayed as (in our case, "My Documents").
To our sorrow, we discovered that this property is "inherited" when we copied the "My Documents" to an external drive for backup and then renamed it with a date suffix, ie, "My Documents 2011-03-05".  As it
turns out, we were only renaming the folder
display name.  If we again use a command prompt to look at the directory structure on the
external drive, the actual file system directory name on the backup drive is still "Documents" (!!!!!).
Now, when you try to do a copy/paste of one of these folders, Windows 7 appears to be slightly schizo.  We think it looks at the
actual file system directory names when doing the paste, so (in our case) it sees a sub-directory already named "Documents" in the target folder and decides it's time to put up the folder merger
    dialog.
But when it generates the (erroneous) folder merger dialog window, is uses the local display names for those two folders (which are different).  So you end up with a ridiculous looking message
which, in effect, says "Your target already has a folder named "ABC" so do you want me to merge folder "DEF" into it?"  But at the file system level, it thinks you're trying to copy a directory named "Documents" into a parent folder that already
has a sub-directory with that same name.
We can even "catch" Windows 7 erroneously using the actual file system directory name if we click-hold-drag (in order to move) our renamed "My Documents 2011-03-05" folder from one folder to another folder on the external drive.
The move operation works fine, BUT after the move, the name of the "My Documents 2011-03-05" folder has been altered to display as, you guessed it, simply "Documents".
Yikes!!! Since when does a simple click-hold-drag to move a folder also RENAME that folder?
So far, we've only caught this happening on directories/folder-names that ship with the OS itself, such as "Documents"/"My Documents", "Pictures"/"My Pictures", etc.  It did
not happen with a "Windows Live Mail" directory that we are also periodically copying to our external drive, presumably because Windows Live Mail 2011 was installed separately from the OS.
Well, we don't think we can fight this bug, so we're switching to a new strategy for our backups.  We now create a new folder on the external drive with the backup date in it, ie "2011-03-05" and then copy the "My Documents",
"My Pictures" , etc. etc. folders to that new "dated" backup folder.  This avoids duplicate subdirectory names going into the same folder, and lets the OS call the copied folder name a-n-y-t-h-i-n-g it wants to!  Plus
we don't have to append the date to the copied backup folder names any more.  As an added bonus, when we see that the "2011-03-05" backup folder is so old that we don't need to keep it anymore, we can just delete that folder and all of its subfolders
and files, and that backup is history.

  • Embedded Album Art not Displaying Showing in Windows Explorer

Trying To Clean up my Music Collection using windows explorer.  Embedding album art works fine for MP3's yet it is not replacing the (film/file/musicnote/baloon/) icon for Mpeg4 - M4A files.
What annoying is that the embedded art may be present but I can't tell just by looking at the individual files.  how can I get confirmation outside of loading up itunes?
is it possible for me to get the embedded art to display in place of the file icon in windows explorer for these file types?  if so, how?

It only happens wih some files, and I can't seem to find out what the correlation is.
If I take a series of mp3s where the album art cannot be displayed in iTunes but can in MediaMonkey or, extract the album art from the the tag through MediaMonkey (iTunes artwork fetching usually gives me poor results), and then assign the album art through iTunes, yes the album art does appear to be saved and displayed through iTunes.  But that's a process.
Additionally, if I reassign the artwork in MediaMonkey (not readding it, just reapplying the assignment to all selected items) the artwork will show up in iTunes.
I'm going to play around with Mp3Tag and see if that yields anything.

The maintenance service runs as a background Window service if necessary and is responsible for downloading and applying an update for all installed Firefox versions without the need to respond to an UAC confirmation that comes with a dimmed window. You only need to give permission once when you install Firefox and the maintenance service isn't installed yet.

  • Windows Explorer Search problems for PDF's - Windows 7 - Acrobat 10.x and 11.x

    Hello,
If this is in the wrong forum please move it.
I work in an enterprise environment and our systems are having trouble searching file contents in Windows Explorer using Acrobat X and Windows 7 32 bit. The files are on a mapped network location.
After removing all adobe products from a test machine and reinstalling the Acrobat 10.0.0 software the windows explorer search function seems to work locally but once I install Acrobat 10.1.anything update, it will fail. It never worked on a networked location.
I have also tried installing Adobe Acrobat 11.0.00 after removing 10.0. Then I made sure my indexing settings were setup to index files and contents and made sure the .pdf extension was selected under file types.
I then created a mapped drive to the network location, and setup my indexing to the folder on that network drive. I was able to do this by installing this Microsoft Add-in that allows use of UNC paths in the indexing.
    http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/confirmation.aspx?id=3383
Once I set this up, I rebuilt my index and restarted the computer. This is where it gets weird. I can now search the contents of PDF files in this indexed network location, but only by one letter. Searching "c type:pdf" will produce results, but "co type:pdf" will not. I know for sure some of the documents have the work Comment in there so this should should up.
Does anyone have experience getting this to work correctly with the latest versions of Adobe Acrobat X or XI and Windows 7 32 bit? It would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you.

I am surprised you got a search of contents to work in Win7. MS changed the process and I have not seen a fix as there was with XP. The search engine of Win7 was designed only to search MS documents and other designated documents from MS. For Win7, the solution is typically to use a third party search engine. I had to use a 3rd party program when I was searching the content of non-MS files. An additional issue with a PDF is that it is a binary file and you may not find text or such, particularly if encryption is set.

  • Using Acrobat XI - no PDFMaker icon in Internet Explorer

Why would the PDFMaker icon not show in Internet Explorer -- is it not compatible with 64bit?

    Lori,
    I have Internet Explorer 9, version 9.0.8112.16421IC  64-bit Edition.
I followed the steps you suggested, but don't see the Acrobat icons.

  • File preview thumbnails aren't working for Acrobat DC files in Windows Explorer

I just upgraded from Acrobat XI to Acrobat DC on Windows 7, and now any new PDFs I create display with a generic PDF icon rather than a thumbnail preview of the file.  Files created in Acrobat XI are displaying correctly (see screenshot).  Is anyone else experiencing this and is there a resolution?

    This is still not working.
I have uninstalled Acrobat Pro DC, but when I go to the linked download page, select Acrobat XI Pro, and click the button which says "Download Acrobat XI Pro," it begins to download Acrobat Pro DC.
Does a link need to be updated or something...?
Previous versions of Acrobat can be found on Adobe's FTP website. Acrobat XI Pro for Windows is at ftp://ftp.adobe.com/pub/adobe/acrobat/win/11.x/11.0.10/ (latest version)
Acrobat Reader XI for Windows is at ftp://ftp.adobe.com/pub/adobe/reader/win/11.x/11.0.10/
Choose your language from the appropriate subdirectory.
Other platforms are available higher up in the directory structure.
If running Windows, it helps to reboot your computer after removing Acrobat DC to remove any remaining files.
After reinstalling Adobe XI or Adobe Reader XI, you can restore your PDF thumbnails by going to File->Open and viewing the selected directory contents. Thumbnails will be recreated as you view them in the list. You don't actually have to open any file. To view the thumbnails in Explorer or on the Desktop, you may have to refresh the display (F5 or Ctrl-F5 or right-click, Refresh).

  • Print multiple PDFs from Windows Explorer causes Acrobat Pro 9.4 crash

I sometimes need to create a batch of PDFs independently, after which it suits me to print them all as a single job. FYI I am running Acrobat Pro 9.4 under Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit.
The sequence of the problem as follows:
    - With Acrobat closed, I go to the directory containing my multiple PDF files using Windows Explorer.
    - I highlight between three and six PDF docs (each individual doc is small, one page, black and white only).
    - I use the "Print" option made available within Windows Explorer.
It's clear that the system then tries to use Acrobat to print these docs, however I consistently get the same behaviour - some print, some do not, but on every occasion I receive the error "Adobe Acrobat 9.4 has stopped working".
Any ideas? Annoying for a paid-for piece of pro software although, granted, not on a level with famine in the third world it would be nice to have all the functionalities working correctly. If it helps my machine spec is below.
    Thanks,

    Disk 1TB (RAID10) of which 920GB free
    Windows 9 Ultimate 64bit
    Acrobat Pro ver 9.4.1

It may partly be a 64-bit issue since AA is apparently a 32-bit application that can run in the 64-bit environment (not that familiar with 64-bit systems, so I may not be stating it correctly. However, I would start by going to the Control Panel>Programs and Features and do a repair on your Acrobat installation. That will hopefully resolve the issue.

  • Windows explorer is not displaying thumbnails ( as it was earlier) instead it is showing default program icon

Hi have been reading the blog for two hours now and I am no closer to a "fix" for this for  our network users. All users on the SOE build now cannot view  or preview image files in windows explorer it is showing just the default icon for
all images files in a folder in Windows Explorer. Is ther a permanent fix to this problem that we can add to out SOE build or to the a windows update that Mircosoft has released?

    Hi,
Here're two settings we need to check:
Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Folder Options, under "View" tab, untick "Always show icons, never thumbnails "
Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\System, in the left panel, click "Advanced System Settings", then under "Performance" tab, click "Settings", under "Visual Effects" tab\Custom, find "Show thumbnails instead of icons", tick it.

  • JPanel Scrollable mimic Windows Explorer Icon View

I am developing an image viewer application, and I want my thumbnail image JPanel to mimic MS Windows Explorer's layout in icon view. However, I have not been able to accomplish this. I have searched high and low, finding many others with my same problem, but no solution. To see exactly what I want to mimic, go to Windows Explorer and take a look at Icon View.
Windows Explorer seems to be using a type of FlowLayout, and the icons get wrapped to the next line. If the number of icons exceeds the viewable space, the vertical scrollbar appears. Note that there is no horizontal scrolling; only vertical scrolling with the FlowLayout. If the user adjusts the SplitPane, then the layout adjusts the scrolling and icons accordingly.
    ============================================================
QUESTION: How can I get my JPanel to mimic Windows Explorer Icon View?
    ============================================================
10 Dukes to anyone who can get this to mimic Windows Explorer. Ideally the solution would not be too involved.
P.S. I think it stinks that JPanel, by design, does not implement Scrollable Interface. Even then, it doesn't work the way I want it to with my FlowLayout and only vertical scrolling. Does anyone understand why it doesn't implement Scrollable, like JTextArea, JEditorPane, etc. do?
    Thanks

Thanks camickr! I didn't try your layout manager since I managed to find another one which seems to do the trick as well. Here is the link from which I found it:

It seems that in the source there is a small bug which is easy to fix. I think the boolean parameters in minimumLayoutSize and preferredLayoutSize should be changed.
    So in minimumLayoutSize():
    return computeSize(target, true);and in preferredLayoutSize():
return computeSize(target, false); After that fix, it worked just fine for me.

After installing Acrobat/Reader on Windows 7 or Vista, icons of all applications/file-types change to Acrobat/Reader icon and double clicking on any icon/file launches Acrobat/Reader (instead of the native application associated to the file type). Is there an easy fix for this problem?

I'm sorry, but I wasn't aware of a native PDF viewer for Windows.
Nonetheless, if you want to change your default PDF application in Windows, you need to right click on any .PDF file, select "Properties",
    then "Change",
