Acrobat lying about file size

I am trying to create a small PDF using Acrobat 8 on a Mac. I have several jpg files, and together they are exactly 10.17 MB. I am using the Combine Files feature of Acrobat. I press add files, select my jpgs, and choose 'Default File Size'. I press Next, than Create. Acrobat then proceeds to combine the files, and informs that the Original Total Size is 10.17 MB, and that the final PDF size is 103.16 KB. So I press 'Save', and save the PDF file. But the PDF file that is saved is about 10.4 MB!!
There is obviously an issue here, and I'm pulling my hair out trying to figure out why the Combine Files dialog is lying to me. Please help!

This does not seem to help There are no embedded fonts; I'm just putting images together using Combine Files. I set the options to the following in the PDF Optimizer, and the file size is still 10.4 MB (text in red is what is selected):

Like I said, the above options yield a pdf of the same size (10.4 MB). I don't know what the deal is.
Recently I've had to reinstall CS3 due to a hard drive failure. Could there possibly be some default option that is different now? Because, before the reinstall I used Combined Files and it always yielded a pdf of the size that Combine Files said it would be.
Just in case additional details are needed: I'm using Acrobat 8 Professional as part of CS3 Design Standard, on an Intel Mac running Mac OS 10.5.7.

  • Why does Acrobat X Reduce File Size make significantly bigger files?

Drawings at AO size, probably from AutoCad, each pdf ranging in size from 600 to 800kb.  No encription.  No attachments.  No embedded fonts.  Reprinted them through Acrobat X Pro to A3 then combined them. Binder size was about 5MB, too large for my client's email system.
Ran the binder through Reduce File size with compatibilty to Version 7 and the binder blew out in size by 20%.  Increased the version compatibility to Version 8 and it increased yet again, to Version 9 stayed the same as 8.
Optimised the same binder and it blew out yet again.  Auditing showed no difference no matter what i deleted.

If you have a file made from AutoCAD it is probably just line drawing. There is really no scope to reduce the size of these (except by taking away lines, which wouldn't be popular). I don't know why it gets bigger, but it's unlikely to get smaller, so I'd recommend finding a different way to deliver the file (many web sites exist for delivering large files).

  • Acrobat Pro 9 file size increases 10x

When I edit a pdf file in Acrobat Pro 9, even the smallest edit like the date, my document size increases by 10 fold.  Another user, on the same version, makes the same edit and it does not change much at all.  I have uninstalled/reinstalled 3 times, tried Reduce File Size and many other things but nothing seems to work.  Has anyone else experienced this same thing and found a resolution?

That is my bad...I must have been in a hurry trying to beat the snow storm and misposted.  How can I move or delete and get this in the correct forum?
    Thanks

  • Acrobat 7Pro - Reduce File Size

I make PDFs by exporting from QuarkXPress 8, using the "Screen - Low/ Quality/Low Resolution" option for proofing. When I try to "Reduce File Size..." in Acrobat, it re-writes the files but DOESN'T make a smaller file. Any suggestions? I hate sending 9mb proofing files to my clients.

  • Question about file size when using "Export for Web"

    Hi!
I created a .mov file and worked to get a great balance between file size and quality so that I could deliver it via the web and make it easier for end users to see the video on a slower connection.
My question: When I use "Export for Web," my .mov file is converted into a very large .m4v file--more than double the size of the original file. I know that this export option is to optimize the file for a wide variety of users/internet speeds. Am I correct in guessing that the end size is not an issue? I would post the .mov file instead, but I really like the option of embedding into a html page along with the "click to play" option.
Bottom line--is it better to post the smaller .mov file that i originally started with or to go ahead and link to the bigger .m4v file that was created with the "Export for Web" option?

"Export for Web" is a feature of QuickTime Pro and it makes 4 files and the html page code for easy copy/paste Web page editing.
The very first file is called a "reference movie" and it links to the other 3 files (56kbps, 900kbps and 1.5Mbps). It, and the page code, "read" the connection speed of the viewing hardware and "serve up" the correct file based on that connection speed.
In nearly all cases the "Desktop" version would still be smaller in file size than the original source. The times the file would "increase" in file size would be when an already compressed was used as the source file. You can find out more about your source file by opening it in QuickTime Player and viewing the Movie Inspector window information.
There are dozens of other html "tricks" that could be used if your source file is already compressed but you want a different display size:
Page code to show "aspect" or scale="tofit". This code allows values "outside" of those found in the actual QuickTime file be used for the Web page display. A 320X240 QuickTime .mov file looks pretty good at double size (640X480) but the file size would still be that of the source file.
"Poster Movie" is another html trick that loads the Web based file directly in the QuickTime Player application (bypassing Web page layout restrictions). These files are also known as "Presentation Movies".
Another method is the QuickTime Media Link file (.qtl). These are simple text based files that are used as a "direct link". These use simple XML (Extensible Markup Language) and are easily created in any text editing application. The simple syntax has amazing control over a simple QuickTime .mov file. You can launch (and quit) the QuickTime Player, display at other dimensions and even embed "links" inside the display.
Some of my files as examples:
    http://homepage.mac.com/kkirkster/Lemon_Trees/ a "Poster Movie" style.
    http://homepage.mac.com/kkirkster/.Public/RedneckTexasChristmas.qtl
A QuickTime Media Link file. A tiny file should download to the viewing machine, launch QuickTime Player, present the movie and it even includes a "link" to my Web page.
Edit: It appears you must now double click the .qtl download to launch QuickTime.

  • Quartz Composer maximum file size for videos?

I'm using the Movie Importer patch and large videos refuse to play. I had no trouble with a 16-minute, 249.6 MB file, but a 7-hour, 534.6 MB file doesn't work. The patch acts like I don't have a file selected at all: it doesn't output an image or a duration value like it's supposed to. I have tried a variety of formats (.mp4, .m4v, .avi) and a variety of frame rates and resolutions. All of my test videos played fine in Quicktime Player (I use Perian, which may explain .avi compatibility... I don't think that's supported natively).
I can't find anything in the docs about file size or duration limits. What am I missing?
    Thanks for the help!

That is a pretty small file for being 7 hours long.
Have you tried using interpolation and converting the hours, seconds and frames into all seconds or does that defeat the object of the composition? I have a bunch of movies taken with the same camera and some do not provide a timecode. Has been an issue for me for a while. In X.6.+ even apple created comps cause the finder and QC to crash. • Reducing PDF form file size

When creating the dynamic PDF form in LiveCycle Designer ES 8.2.x, the file size is < 200K. When opening in Acrobat 9 Pro and extending to Acrobat Reader, the file size > 1.2MB. Is there any way to reduce the file size?
    Thanks!
    -JoeF

Are you using any font's other than the standard ones (aka base-14)? The standard ones are Helvetica, Times, Courier (including four variants of each), Symbol, and Zapf Dingbats (Adobe Pi is the replacement).
If that's not it, do a Save As, as opposed to just a Save. This will rid the document of unused objects that accumulate each time you save.

  • YouTube/File Size

I have an 8-minute clip I want to upload to YT, among other sites. At that length, it becomes a rather large file to try to put on YT.
So the question is: If I print to video in Final Cut then recapture that footage, can I beat the File-size sheriff at YT this way?
I've used this trick to get around a YT glitch gremlin that caused some audio issues in the past. But I never thought about file size until my normally 5-minute works grew into an 8-minute piece this go-round.
Thanks in advance for any ideas.

Hi. I am fairly happy with the YouTube results of files I upload to them using H.264 via Compressor. You can easily get under 100MB with your 10 minute video. For longer videos use the preset in Compressor for fast broadband streaming. I generally experiment with a few sets of settings. FWIW you can check out my results at YT by searching "Covita".
As a side note, if I need folks to see a better quality, I send them to my .mac account website, where they can view the videos in Quicktime just as I upload them. Very nice.

  • Incorrect file sizes in Finder

Was looking at other discussions about file sizes but they didn't seem to reflect the same issue that I'm having. Maybe I misread them.
Since updating to Snow leopard on all my Macs, I noticed that all the files are reflecting about 3-8% more than their actual size. Basically, the Finder is reporting the wrong file sizes. By using a file transfer software like Transmit, the file sizes are reflected correctly. For example, if I download iTunes 9.3, the download file is 93.6MB but the Finder shows 98.2MB. Transmit shows 93.6MB which is correct.
Anyway to fix this annoying issue?

I think the issue has to do with the fact that some programs have not adopted the new method yet. Unfortunately programs like iTunes can be used on on operating systems as far back as Tiger which used the old system. I noticed this several months ago and find it very irritating, especially when trying to do things like burn DVDs/CDs and trying to fill them up as much as possible. The only thing you can do about it is provide feedback to Apple at http://www.apple.com/feedback/ and hope they fix it in upcoming releases of their software.

  • Optimizing file size for project (Splitting)

    Hi,
I have recently taught myself Captivate 4 and have nearly pieced together all the requirements of a training video. There is no user interactions or quizzes. I am still not sure what is the best method to present the video. I want to publish to our intranet using Flash.
I captured a video using the inbuilt Automatic Recording Mode (so most of the slides are stills with a couple of  FMR sldes) This produced a project with 140 slides. I understand after reading topics about file size reduction, you should try and keep projects around 60 slides. Therefore my question is do I cut this project up into three smaller projects (VideoPt1.cp VideoPt2.cp etc) then in the first project set the last slide to open Videopt2.cp and then repeat this for each project. Then publish the first project to flash. (Which is a very tedious task and I am sure there must be a better way to do this)
When I do this and review the output when it gets to the end of the first section, it errors and says cannot find next file.
I checked the adobe help file but does not seem to offer much explanation on the topic. Just two flavours (open file/URL or Project)
Are there better ways of doing this, the Aggregator seems to offer a sort of solution but I dont want a user seeing multiple chapters for what is in effect one chapter.
    Cheers exup

How can I keep tabs on the file size when importing from the Event Library into a Project? I want to ensure the movie will fit onto a 4.7Gb disc?

iDVD does not care about file sizes, as it compresses the file to the standard DVD format of mpeg2.
It only cares about length i.e. max 2 hours including titles etc.
    iDVD encoding settings:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=iDVD/7.0/en/11417.html
    Short version:
Best Performance is for videos of up to 60 minutes
Best Quality is for videos of up to 120 minutes
Professional Quality is also for up to 120 minutes but even higher quality (and takes much longer)
Professional Quality: The Professional Quality option uses advanced technology to encode your video, resulting in the best quality of video possible on your burned DVD. You can select this option regardless of your project’s duration (up to 2 hours of video for a single-layer disc and 4 hours for a double-layer disc). Because Professional Quality encoding is time-consuming (requiring about twice as much time to encode a project as the High Quality option, for example) choose it only if you are not concerned abo
In both cases the maximum length includes titles, transitions and effects etc. Allow about 15 minutes for these.
You can use the amount of video in your project as a rough determination of which method to choose. If your project has an hour or less of video (for a single-layer disc), choose Best Performance. If it has between 1 and 2 hours of video (for a single-layer disc), choose High Quality. If you want the best possible encoding quality for projects that are up to 2 hours (for a single-layer disc), choose Professional Quality. This option takes about twice as long as the High Quality option, so select it only if time is not an issue for you.
Use the Capacity meter in the Project Info window (choose Project > Project Info) to determine how many minutes of video your project contains.
NOTE: With the Best Performance setting, you can turn background encoding off by choosing Advanced > “Encode in Background.” The checkmark is removed to show it’s no longer selected. Turning off background encoding can help performance if your system seems sluggish.
And whilst checking these settings in iDVD Preferences, make sure that the settings for NTSC/PAL and DV/DV Widescreen are also what you want.

  • Image size vs file size

    Hello,
I would very much appreciate an answer to the follwing:  When I save a file to jpeg the image size in photoshop remains the same as it was as a tiff file BUT according to the information that comes up in windows properties the file is much smaller (300k vs 2.9mg).   Can you advise me which is the correct file size?   If the correct size is the one showing in windows (300K) does mean that the file compressed in JPG and lost a lot of information?  and if this is the case how can I prevent that from happening and still save the file as a JPG?   [ I would like the image to remain the size photoshop shows it to be] .  Thank you very much.

The file size of the JPG on disk is 300kb this is because it is heavily compressed.
The file size shown in Photoshop is uncompressed and appears at the larger size.
Yes, compressing loses information but it may not lose much quality the first time it is compressed.
To minimise data loss use a compressed TIFF format.
Or stop worrying about file size – storage space is cheap!
The only time JPEGs should be used is for display on the web.
In fact for general use in Adobe applications, the PSD format is fine. (As long as it lasts!   )

  • HD Video File Sizes?

My class is switching over to HD next year and the school is worried about file sizes being too large.  No one, including myself, seems to know for sure and a search didn't turn up an answer I was looking for.
We used to use a Canon ZR800 (or similar Canon model) to capture with PP.  Now, we'll be using a Sony HD mini-DV camcorder (I do not have the model info in front of me).  We will be using this (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/516841-REG/Sony_GVHD700_GV_HD700_HDV_Video_Walkman.h tml) to capture our video with using HDMI connections/video card.
The computers we are using are pretty standard/basic.  2 GB RAM, etc.  I forget the processor speed but it's right in line with what you'd expect at 2 GB of RAM.
What kind of file sizes are we looking at while capturing?  What other capacity problems should be a concern?  I have not submitted my budget yet but need to do so this week.  Everything is ready to go but the school wanted me to get some answers on this sort of thing.
    THANK YOU so much!!!!!!!!!

Ok, well here is the camcorder info for the one I plan on purchasing:
    http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?ci=0&shs=SOHDRHC9&sb=ps&pn=1&sq=desc&Initi alSearch=yes&O=jsp%2Fproductlist.jsp&A=search&Q=*&bhs=t
Will Adobe CS3 compress these files?  If so, how much (what sizes are we talking...1 minute equals ?) and how much quality, if any, is lost?
Does the camcorder handle the compression, the software, or both?
I obviously want to avoid a sitaution where what we order simply does not work or when the footage is fimled is too large to do anything with.
