Acrobat not opening files in "adobe pdf format"????

I just got the message (The document “7/11Diverticulitis.pdf” could not be opened. Acrobat cannot open files in the “Adobe PDF document” format.) after trying to create a pdf file on my new computer. Recently upgraded to MacPro On Snow Leopard oper. system. I had all my old stuff transfered to new computer. It all worked fine before. I am using a HPPhotosmart C7250 all-in-one printer/scanner. I needed to upgrade the scanner/printer software driver, did that already. Why doesnt' this work correctly. Steps for creating a pdf file are also different than before but I was able to create on, but can't open it with the new computer . Any ideas?

You say that you transferred everything from another computer -- did you use Migration Assistant, or just copy things over?
Either way, it is probably best to reinstall Acrobat from the disk, as it looks like some components have not been copied over.
(Nothing wrong with having / in a filename on OS X. The only banned character is a semicolon. If you plan on transferring files to Windows, there is a host of chars that they can't use, though.)

To create a PDF document, go to the source application then print the document to .pdf" I am going to the source application and printing the document to .pdf yet it's saving the file as a .log file. After reinstalling the software, I initially didn't encounter this problem but on my second and third attempts to convert files to .pdf format, this error message reappeared. Running Acrobat Pro 9.4.2 on Snow Leopard, have never had this problem before. Showed up about a week ago, I believe with new update. Can't double click on a file in Finder, or drag and drop to AcrobatPro in Dock, but can open from within Acrobat Pro / File / Open command.
All my preferences are correct with "Open With Acrobat Pro" as the default.
I've read all the threads I can find with no answers yet.
Anyone found and answer, I see a lot of us are going through this over the last year.
Only possible common thread I have found is possibly HP printers. But I've been running HP printers all along with no issues.

Either Acrobat needs to be re-installed or the file is named as a pdf file, but it is not a pdf file. Try opening the pdf file in a text editor and read off what the first line of the file is.

What's the name of the file you are attempting to open? Is it "ScreenFlow_4.5.2.dmg"? If it is the correct name then the message is correct and you are attempting to open a file with DMG files extension and not one with a PDF file extension. Adobe Reader opens PDF files an not any other file type.

It sounds like Adobe Reader X is your default PDF file handler. Launch Adobe Reader X. Choose Edit > Preferences > General. Click the 'Select Default PDF Handler' button at the bottom and choose Acrobat 9 from the drop-down menu. Click Apply, then OK.
Restart your computer. Acrobat 9 should now be your default PDF file handler again.

You may be mixing up two entirely different Adobe products.
1. Adobe Flash Player. Needed to view web pages designed with Flash. Not needed to view PDF files. Not available for Android (not just Sony).
2. Adobe Reader. Reads PDF files. However, the Android can also read most PDF files without needing Adobe Reader.

As a web designer - IMHO, Internet Exploder is absolute garbage disguised as software. This (and thousands of other threads in this and many other forums throughout the web) is just more proof of that. I've used Firefox since 2002 when it was still called Mozilla. It does about a million things IE can't and won't, and does them better, faster, and more sensibly.
Microsoft KNOWS that most corporate workstations have Windows and most I/T departments forbid installation of unapporved software, including browsers, so (by a very slim margin) IE is still the most used browser in the world, but... that doesn't by any means make it the best choice. Because they know so many people are literally FORCED to use it at work, they will not make it more functional than they absolutely have to, because they don't care if people like it or not, when they have no other choice.
On a home computer, it's different, and that's why Firefox is just a fraction of a percentage point behind IE in worldwide use, and thanks to iPhones, Safari is rapidly climbing the numbers too.
Rather than trying to work around something that even Microsoft won't bother to fix, abandon their junk and go with Firefox, Opera, Chrome or Safari. It won't be long till you're glad you did.

First check the version of the document with Jongware's script "Identify.jsx" (ExtendScript/JavaScript).

If it is CS 5.5 or above, you need someone to open it in the version the script says and export an IDML representation from that. Another way would be to install a 30days version of CS6 or above (CC) and do it yourself.
In regards of the script showing a result for InDesign files higher than CS6:
CS7 = CC v9
CS8 = CC v10 = CC-2014 or CC2014.1

Since October 23rd, after downloading the recent upgrade for Adobe Reader, I continually keep getting error code 0.104 whenever I try to open a file that is in PDF format. When I remove the Adobe Reader program, the desktop is ok but when I reinstall the Adobe Reader it makes a mess again on the desktop and in all programs. I am not aware of a way except for photos that allows you to select multiple files in an email. I even checked settings in the Adobe Reader app, and it does not show that ability.

Please try following steps:
1. Run the installed Adobe Reader X.
2. Click on Edit in the menu bar.
3. Then click on Preferences in the drop down menu list.
4. Click on the Internet category on the left pane.
5. Now, make sure that Display PDF in Browser option is checked.
If above steps doesn't work then let me know which Browser you are using, may be we have to do some settings there.
