Acrobat opens instead of Reader from links in MS Office

Hello,
we've installed Adobe Acrobat 9.4.5 and Adobe Reader 10.1.3 on our terminal servers (Windows server 2008 R2) and given the users separate permissions based on two security groups in AD. Everyone has access to Reader, but only some users have access to Acrobat.
Somehow Acrobat is selected as the default program for opening PDF files instead of Reader. We managed to work around this by setting some registry values with a GPO, like:
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOTAcroExch.Document.7shellOpenCommand]
@=CProgram Files (x86)AdobeReader 10.0ReaderAcroRd32.exe %1
But now we've discovered that if you try to open a PDF with a hyperlink in any Microsoft Office products, it'll try to open it in Acrobat again. This causes trouble for the users that don't have access to Acrobat and the session freezes for a while before it opens up in Reader at last.
So my question is, how can I make Adobe Reader the default PDF program for everyone and everywhere?

The default PDF handler needs to be set at install time as described in the admin guide and/or Wizard Help. Setting it post-install is a hack.

Try tapping the pdf and pressing "open in". This should allow you to open your pdf in reader. Let me know if this does not work for you.

  • Having trouble opening connections and reading from Bluetooth devices.

    Hello,
As the title states, I am having trouble opening connections and reading data from a Bluetooth device. We are using a PDA to communicate with LabVIEW. First, the Bluetooth Open Connection VI displays a timeout error half of the time. Second, when it does open, it does not read what the PDA is sending. Third, if it does allow an open connection, it will not do it a second time unless the devices are turned off.
I also have another related question. I am using a Linksys Bluetooth USB adapter, and the driver is proprietary. Labview requires the use of a Microsoft driver, and we are having problems going back and forth between the drivers. What Bluetooth receiver would you suggest using? The reason I ask is the fact that you have Bluetooth examples of client VI's. Therefore, you must use a similar device. Thank you for your time.
    -Jon

    Hi Jon,
I'm not sure what Bluetooth receivers were used to verify the functionality of the VIs. However, I still want to help you solve your issue. Please make sure that you are running the shipping examples and let me know what version of LabVIEW, what PC OS and what PDA OS you are using. Does the Microsoft driver work for your Bluetooth receiver if you uninstall the Linksys driver?
With your answers I'll do my best to help you out.

  • How do I make safari open a pdf file with acrobat x instead of reader

I would like a pdf file from a link in Safari to open the linked file with adobe acrobat x rather than either adobe reader of the safari version.  Where can I set the preference to get this done?

Aha!  The properties for the plugin file nppdf32.dll for Adobe Reader indicate the file is for Adobe Acrobat.  This misidentification is then used by SeaMonkey as a label in the helper application list.
Adobe Reader 11.0.3.37:  nppdf32.dll has version 11.0.3.37.  This is the version in SeaMonkey's plugins folder.
    Adobe Acrobat 7.0.8.218:  nppdf32.dll has version 7.0.9.50.
As for having both Adobe Reader and Adobe Acrobat on the same PC, this generally works providing Reader is installed AFTER Acrobat.  Reader is freeware, and I want to keep it current.  Acrobat is purchaseware, and I cannot afford to keep buying  upgrades or newer versions.

  • Adobe Acrobat opens up every file from the day before, always

Usually it would do something like this when it crashes to recover but now whenever I open a PDF and have none already opened it will open every single PDF I opened YESTERDAY as if it crashed with them all open. I did not have most of those PDFs open even within the same hour yesterday nor did Adobe crash at any point.
It will also do this randomly while open with a PDF while using Quite Imposing to create a new PDF. It will just go, Hey! I'm going to open up 60 PDFs to freeze your PC!
    Any suggestions?

It may depend on the plugin that is loaded into your browser. However, right click on a PDF and select the Open With option and go to the default button to select Acrobat as the default. That might do it.

  • Opening a new tab from link without moving to the new tab

Hi, first of all thanks to the firefox team for such a innovative product, without this browser my day is incomplete.
I have a query, when we use Alt+Ctrl+T to open a link in a new tab the focus also moves to the target new tab. Is there any shortcut/feature where in the focus remains in the source tab even though the link is opened in the new tab. It would be really helpful for people like me who do a lot of reading over the internet.

Tools > Options > Tabs: [ ] "When I open a link in a new tab, switch to it immediately"
This issue can be caused by an extension.
Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).
    * Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.

  • When I open a new tab, a new window opens instead. I have set preferences... doesnt matter. Help please.

Everytime I open a new link from an originalpage a new window opens instead.

    Are that JavaScript links?
You can look at the browser.link.open_newwindow prefs on the about:config page.
    * http://kb.mozillazine.org/browser.link.open_newwindow.restriction (0)
    * http://kb.mozillazine.org/browser.link.open_newwindow (3)
To open the <i>about:config</i> page, type <b>about:config</b> in the location (address) bar and press the "<i>Enter</i>" key, just like you type the url of a website to open a website.<br />
If you see a warning then you can confirm that you want to access that page.<br />
*Use the Filter bar at to top of the about:config page to locate a preference more easily.
*Preferences that have been modified show as bold(user set).
*Preferences can be reset to the default or changed via the right-click context menu.

  • Making the vi faster - read from txt or array or binary reading

I prepared a vi that reads a table from txt file and find the desired values corresponding independent two variables by interpolation-attached. This via reads the txt file for each calculation. I wonder that is this process slow or enough for me. Becasue I add this via to a daq vi and I send measurement values from this via to the interpolation.vi. I acquired samples once in a sec. Or is this more convenient to read the txt once and after writing values to arrays and use these arrays as a constant (Right click array-->Data Operation-->Make current value default) in the vi? Which one is faster? And also, I wonder that instead of reading from txt file, is it a good way to convert my values in txt to binary data and read this binary values by vi? Last thing, how can I learn a vi program run-spend time?

Reordering your words a bit... Are you asking how to measure how long it takes to run your VI?  You can do this with a sequence structure (one of the few reasonable uses for them): in the first frame put a "Tick Count" or "Get Date/Time in Seconds" function.  In the next frame put your code.  In the last frame, put the same function that you placed in the first frame.  Subtract the time value in the first frame from the value in the last frame; the difference is the time it took to run your VI in milliseconds or seconds (depending on which time function you used).
Another option is the VI Profiler, under Tools -> Performance and Memory.  Open that window, click "Start," run your code, and click "Stop."  It will report how much time it took to run your VI along with other timing information.
Thank you nathand. I am sorry for usage of wrong order. I tried your suggestion and it works great. The first vi takes 4-6 msec. And the second one takes just 0 msec because it does not calculate anything, including just constant values.

  • Windows 8: Make PDFs open by default in Acrobat Standard or Pro instead of Reader

In a Windows 8 environment, how can you set set all PDFs to open in Acrobat Standard or Professional instead of Reader? I've tried right-clicking on a PDF in Windows Explorer, selecting Properties, then changing the default app from Reader to Professional. Although it seems to work (does not generate an error), PDFs continue to open in Reader. Surely there is a way to change this. I've spent about 15 minutes Googling this, but was surprised I could find no solution.

  • Why does Firefox load an old links (from e-mails or a previously played POGO game) when it first opens instead of my homepage?

Every time I receive an (Outlook) e-mail with a link, Firefox will open and navigate to the link, but then seems to remember and reopens that link every time I start Firefox, instead of loading my homepage. If I receive another e-mail (with a new link), and I navigate to the new link or the wife plays a POGO game then it opens each time I start Firefox. I currently using version 4, but the problem has been going on since approximately the last 3 or 4 updates.

Open the Firefox preferences (from the "Tools" menu, choose "Options"). In the "General" section, you can change the "When Firefox starts..." option to show your home page, instead of showing your tabs from last time.

  • Error when opening a pdf as a http-link in Reader from C#

    Hi all,
My problem is this. If I start Adobe Reader 9.2, select open and paste a http-reference (such as http://www.education.gov.yk.ca/pdf/pdf-test.pdf) then that will work without any problem. But if I try to do the same from C# with
    Process.Start("AcroRd32.exe", "http://www.education.gov.yk.ca/pdf/pdf-test.pdf");
then Adobe Reader starts but the file is not opened, instead I get this error message: "There was and error opening this document. The filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect".
Does anyone know why it doesn't work from C#?
    /Rick

I tried this from my laptop with IE8 and it worked fine.
I trust that answers your question...
    Thanks
    C

  • How did my pdf files get converted from 'open with Adobe Reader' to open with Adobe Acobat'?  And if I have a ''free'' Acrobat account why does it not open?  When I do click on the account it ask me to pay $89.99.  I never wanted Acrobat.  How can I get -

How did my stored files get converted from 'open with Adobe READER' to 'open with Adobe ACROBAT'? How can I get them re-set to open with 'Adobe Reader'?
Please reply to my e-mail:   [email protected]

It sounds as if you downloaded Adobe Acrobat Pro. If you did, uninstall it. Then repair Adobe Reader.
The free Acrobat account has no connection to any of this.

  • Acrobat Reader can't open PDF file downloaded from the internet

I downloaded the following pdf file from the internet and saved it to the desktop. When I tried to open the file I got a message saying Acrobat couldn't open it. I do not have trouble opening other PDF files. There is something about opening certain PDF files from the internet that is causing this. Is there a setting in the PDF preferences that is causing this or some security setting.
    http://www.porteverglades.net/include/content/docs/media/Port-map-2009.pdf

It seems that Safari is unable to export the document as a PDF because the exported file was zero bytes. That's why I couldn't open it. I tried Firefox and did a File>Save. It saved the file as a PDF which I was able to open. So proglem solved.

    Hi.
Does this only open on that specific site?
In any case, you may want to:
    - instruct Firefox to handle PDF files in a specific way by going into Tools > Options > Applications and selecting the option you want for the PDF files
    - reinstall Adobe Reader and its Firefox plugin
    - install another reader instead of Adobe Reader. I recommend Foxit Reader ( http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/reader/ ), since it's free, VERY light, VERY fast, safe and also has a Firefox plugin (make sure you don't have both Adobe Reader plugin and Foxit Reader plugin enabled/installed at the same time in Firefox)
