Text appearance in adobe acrobat (pro) files displays inconsistently unless you zoom in. Mainly 'i's and 'l's look bigger than they should.
The pdfs print fine though.

Try doing a spotlight search for all files that start with AdobeFnt. They will be named AdobefntXX.lst, with the XX being some number. They will be scattered across the drive... After making sure that all Adobe applications are closed, trash all the adobefntxx.lst files, those with the 3 letter extension .lst.
Then, restart the system, and open the files in Acrobat again.
Otherwise, what happens in Safe boot? (Remember, Safe boot loads only a default set of fonts.) If they display fine there, the problem most likely is a font issue, one of the fonts that Adobe installed.
Check Adobe's web support page for troubleshooting Fonts.

Contact Adobe about the whole issue, it is after all, Adobe Acrobat... Adobe's contact number is 800 833 6687.

• Using VBA - Check to see if Acrobat Pro is open on users machine

Hello all. I have an Access application that generates a bunch of single page PDF reports in a folder on the users machine, then when it is finished, it combines all of the files into a single pdf file on the users desktop. If the user has left Acrobat Pro open before he starts running the reports, when it begins to try to combine the files, he will get an error message.
I would like to check to see if Adobe Acrobat Pro is open early on in the routine so that the user doesn't have to spend so much time regenerating the reports again. I have not been able to find any VBA code that will do this. Can anyone help?
Thanks,
David

Hello Test Screen Name. I do trap for the error and generate a friendly error message to ask the user to close Adobe Acrobat. The problem is, depending on the criteria they select for the report, it could take 5 to 10 minutes before they ever see that error message because of the hundreds of individual pdf reports it has to generate. It is not until my code is ready to combine those pdf files that they see the message. So, it is not really a runtime error so to speak.
But, I found the answer to my question and wanted to share it with everyone. The answers are located here:
API: Find out if an application is currently running
API: Get Class name of a running app
What I did is paste all code from those 2 pages into a new module in Access. Then I made sure that Adobe Acrobat is loaded on my machine. I ran the sub fEnumWindows() and it printed the Class Names of all of my open programs. I got the class name for Adobe Acrobat, which is AcrobatSDIWindow. Then I modified the select case statement in the following function as so, to include the string acrobat and its Class Name:
Function fIsAppRunning(ByVal strAppName As String, _
Optional fActivate As Boolean) As Boolean
Dim lngH As Long, strClassName As String
Dim lngX As Long, lngTmp As Long
        Const WM_USER = 1024
        On Local Error GoTo fIsAppRunning_Err
        fIsAppRunning = False
        Select Case LCase$(strAppName)
            Case "excel":      strClassName = "XLMain"
            Case "word":        strClassName = "OpusApp"
            Case "access":      strClassName = "OMain"
            Case "powerpoint95": strClassName = "PP7FrameClass"
            Case "powerpoint97": strClassName = "PP97FrameClass"
            Case "notepad":    strClassName = "NOTEPAD"
            Case "acrobat":  strClassName = "AcrobatSDIWindow"
            Case "wordpad":    strClassName = "WordPadClass"
            Case Else:          strClassName = vbNullString
        End Select
        If strClassName = "" Then
            lngH = apiFindWindow(vbNullString, strAppName)
        Else
            lngH = apiFindWindow(strClassName, vbNullString)
        End If
        If lngH <> 0 Then
            apiSendMessage lngH, WM_USER + 18, 0, 0
            lngX = apiIsIconic(lngH)
            If lngX <> 0 Then
                lngTmp = apiShowWindow(lngH, SW_SHOWNORMAL)
            End If
            If fActivate Then
                lngTmp = apiSetForegroundWindow(lngH)
            End If
            fIsAppRunning = True
        End If
fIsAppRunning_Exit:
        Exit Function
fIsAppRunning_Err:
        fIsAppRunning = False
        Resume fIsAppRunning_Exit
End Function
Now I can just send "acrobat" to this function to see if the app is open.
Sincerely,
David

It sounds like an issue of trying to run XI on VISTA. That combination does not work. Info on both the Acrobat full version (including sub-version) and OS would help. It might also be an issue of running 11.0.0 on a system that needs the updates to work.

• How can I make Acrobat Pro XI open by default to thumbnails view (Pages Panel & Pages)?

How can I make Acrobat Pro XI open by default to thumbnails view (Pages Panel & Pages) without changing the properties on every single pdf?

Not possible. This is a file-specific setting, not an application-wide
setting.

• Acrobat Pro 9 opens multiple files (50) on every start

Start the program or click on a pdf file and - pro 9 opens and loads every ******* pdf file I've had open in the past however long.  Seems to be a limit of 50 files - tries to load a few more and then stops.  What's changed since I last used it normally yesterday afternoon?  Nothing other than rebooting the computer.
Appreciate any help.

This is usually solved by deleting your Acrobat preferences.  Since you did not state your OS I cannot give you the path to your preferences but there should be a doc in the knowledge base pointing you in the right direction.  Good Luck!

• Acrobat Pro not opening PDF files when I double click on them- It only works if I bring up the program-.

I've installed a trial version of Acrobat XI Pro. It will open the file if I hit control->open with->Acrobat Pro Luis: but if I double click on the document it only brings up the Acrobat XI Pro window with the "Open a Recent File", I've changed the "Open With" option on "Get Info" and still can't open the PDF files with a double click. Can anyone help me out? Thanks! LAGA

When I double click the file after Acrobat is opened nothing happens...
The PDF file only opens if I start the acrobat program then look for the PDF file or any PDF Files and then I am able to open them.

• Deploying Adobe Acrobat Pro XI in a VDI environment

In our VDI environment (using VMware Horizon View 5.3), we are using a Windows 8.1 base image (Parent VM) with Adobe Acrobat Pro XI installed on it (signed-in and registered). We then deploy new instances (Linked-Clones) of Windows 8.1
using this base. When userA logs into any desktops we have deployed from this Windows 8.1 base image, they get prompted to license the software: 1) Sign in and 2) Provide serial number.
Even though UserA licenses the software properly on DesktopA, they get prompted for the same licensing information on DesktopB and so on.
I have tried to virtualize the application using VMware View ThinApp. Same issue.
What is the proper way to distribute the application to multiple systems/users without running into this licensing loop?
I have read this post, but no luck: Packaging Adobe Acrobat XI Pro - Bug after installation
Thanks.

First thing to know that this VMware Horizon View 5.3 isn't a currently supported environment. They support Citrix XenApp.
Second, VMWare's ThinApp implementation isn't supported either.  They do support MS AppV
See the following documentation:
12   Citrix Deployments — Enterprise Administration Guide
14   App-V Deployment — Enterprise Administration Guide
Finally, the issue that you are running into is likely a permission problem on the licensing folders.
Have a look at this KB and adjust your permissions on these folders with appropriate permissions to see if that makes a difference.

• Photoshop CS5.1 on 15" Macbook Pro (File opening/Application Frame problem)

I have seemed to narrow the problem to my preferences file but cannot figure out why.
I installed a clean, fresh version on my Mac. (No previous versions were ever installed).
When I open Photoshop for the first time, everything runs fine: I can open files and edit as usual.
As soon as I close it and re-open many things happen:
a) I can go to open a file, but with Window>Application Frame unchecked, I cannot see the open file.
b) All other palletes go awry. I cannot change the open palletes and or edit anything.
c) If I check Window>Application Frame, everything is back to normal. No problems here.
So, what is going on? Anyone else having this problem?

I get this same issue with PS CS5.1 a recently purchased 15" Macbook Pro
In PS5.1 use File/Open to open an image file but image doesn't appear (histogram and other properies dialogs show the right info, though),
switching to Application Frame mode makes the photo appear,
trying to switch back out of App Frame mode locks PS5 up (ie nothing displays & have to Quit and restart via the Dock icon).
For me this issue only happens when my secondary display in NOT connected. If the 2nd display is hooked up everything shows up normally. Doesn't seem to matter about the power profile (ie running on battery or not) and not affected by various background apps, devices hooked up (eg backup drive, USB mouse. All Mac & CS5.5 software updates have been applied to date.

• Convert from Word 2007 to Acrobat Pro 9; bookmark issue

When converting from Word 2007 to PDF using Acrobat Pro 9, enabling "Convert Word Headings to Bookmarks", not only are Headings converted to bookmarks, but bulleted text (styles), as well.  I attached the subsequent PDF, but this forum does not permit the document attachment.  I really only want to show the Headings.  (It may be noteworthy to mention that when using this same set of styles in Word 2003 and Acrobat Pro7 the conversion was seamless.)
Does anyone know how to correct this?  I have reviewed my Word styles and the issue does not appear to be on the document level.  Am I missing some obscure setting?
I'd appreciate any help.
Thanks.
-PS

I had a similar situation occur when converting Word 2007 docs to Acrobat Pro 9 Extended via the PDFMaker (Acrobat add-on tab in Word 2007), and I want to share a workaround. In summary, I had extraneous bookmarks appear in the PDF (heading 3s, body text, XE Index tags, etc.)  that I did not select to be in the PDF.  I contacted Adobe's support and ended up talking for approx. 2.5 hrs to 2 different reps with no solution. They reproduced the issue on their end, but couldn't figure out how to fix this. I recently upgraded to Tech Comm Suite 2.5 from 1.0. The Word 2007 conversion to PDF via Acrobat Pro 8.x worked fine.
Scenario: I have 400-page user guides that I am required to publish as 'Press Quality' with navigable bookmarks to certain headings in the PDF. I have to generate the PDF via the Acrobat Add-On tab in Word, since I do not want to manually insert bookmarks in the PDF for 400 page documents (as you would when using the Adobe Print driver or 'Save As PDF' operation).
In the Adobe PDF Maker dialog, I have the following Application Settings selected in the General tab:
Create Bookmarks
Add Links
In the Bookmarks tab,  I originally had only two Elements selected for bookmarks:
Heading 1 (a Word Heading already present) as the Level 1 Bookmark.
Table of Contents Bookmark (a Word Style I created) as the Level 2 Bookmark.
As a result, the Convert Word Headings to Bookmarks and Convert Styles to Bookmarks were both enabled in the Bookmarks tab.
The resulting PDF contained extraneous bookmarks that I did NOT select, such as Heading 2s, 3s, even body text - too much to clean up for 400-page documents! Additionally, and this was annoying too - I noticed that all bookmarks appeared as Level 1 Bookmarks, making the PDF Bookmarks really messy. I converted multiple Word 2007 documents with the same results.
How I resolved the issue:
In the Word 2007 document, open the Styles window, select all instances of the specific Word Heading (in my case, Heading 1). All instances of the selected Word Heading will be selected in the doc.
Click the New Style icon in the lower left part of the Styles window.
In the Create New Style from Formatting dialog, create a new style name (e.g., I created H1).
Just to be sure to NOT create the new style from an existing Word Heading, I selected (no style) in the Style Based On field.
Configure the remaining formatting items as necessary, and then click OK. All of the selected instances from the old Word Heading style are now changed to the new style created (in my case, H1).
Click the Preferences tab in the Acrobat add-on tab in Word 2007, and open the Bookmarks tab.
Remove the old Word Heading (in my case, it was Heading 1) so it no longer will be included as a Bookmark in the PDF.
Select the new Word Style that you created (in my case, H1) to be generated as the Level 2 bookmark. Note: My original Level 1 bookmark, "TOC Bookmark," is still selected. Now, only the Convert Word Styles to Bookmarks is enabled in the Bookmarks tab.
Generate the PDF once again via the PDFMaker, and no extraneous bookmarks appear in the PDF.
Note: I also noticed that when Index tags (XE tags) were present in an element selected to be a bookmark in the PDF (such as my new style, H1), they also appeared in the PDF Bookmarks pane. I just moved the XE tags down to the body text so they would no longer appear in the PDF.
Question for discussion: Maybe there is a bug in the PDFMaker when both Convert Word Headings to Bookmarks and Convert Styles to Bookmarks are selected? The extraneous bookmarks do not appear in my PDF when only Convert Word Styles is selected.

• Acrobat Pro X Opens Every Document Directly to Page 2. WTF?????

Hello. I updated to Acrobat Pro X and now when I try to open a PDF file from a link on my website, it automatically opens every document starting on Page 2, instead of Page 1 as I have set in "Properties"
When I open the documents independent of the web browser, they open directly to Page 1, as specified.
What gives?
Anyone else having this problem?
I think I might punch Adobe Acrobat right in its face as my customers are going to open the docs on my site and go "WTF????????!?!?!!?!?!?!?!?!?!!" and then poop their pants.
What to do?

I was having a similar problem, but only when viewing PDFs that were set to "fit page", and only when viewing in the browser.  "Fit width" PDFs worked fine.
I am running Pro 9 but made the mistake of installing Reader X.  (This could explain why PDFs opened locally were fine, but those opened in a browser are not.)
I finally uninstalled Reader X.  PDFs now open to page 1 properly.  Strangely, I didn't have to reinstall Reader 9... I guess it's now using Pro 9 to view in the browser?
Not sure if this is a bug in Reader/Pro X or just a problem with having different versions of Reader and Pro on the same machine, but I thought I'd at least add a "me too" to the topic.

• Acrobat XI file association issue

OS: Win 7 x64
problem: i cannot set acrobat as the default program to open pdf files. i have tried "open with", or in control panel set file association, but acrobat still cannot be added in the default program list. Any suggestions?
Thanks.

You have to be sure you go into the default definition part of the Open With and be sure the default check box is selected. What other product is claiming the default and is this an issue with the other program? A repair of Acrobat might resolve the issue.

• Adobe Acrobat Pro 7 Accessibility Issue

I have an existing form that was designed in Adobe Pagemaker 7 that includes check boxes (wingding font). I've converted it to a pdf using Distiller 7. I open it using Acrobat Pro 7 and then run the Full Check tool for Accessibility I get the following:
15 words(s) that contain characters with no reliable mapping to Unicode.
No Unicode for characters
I have the fonts installed locally:
C:\WINDOWS\Fonts\WINGDING.TTF
Can someone please tell me how to fix this?
Thanks

The important thing is that the document actually _is_ accessible.
That doesn't necessarily mean blindly eliminating all of the messages,
it means understanding the messages you do get, and deciding which
ones affect your technical/statutory requirements. Or so it seems to
me.
It doesn't seem likely that there is a Unicode value for "check box",
but even if there was, I don't see any accessibility benefit here.
