Acrobat Reader 8, problems on case-sensitive HFS+

Hi,
I hope this is the right forum. I have formatted my Macbook to use case-sensitive HFS+ volumes, because I regularly use Unix programs (many of which have a built-in assumption that file names are case-sensitive) and now some functions of Adobe Acrobat Reader 8 don't work properly (e.g. printing and Updater). Since above formatting is the only change from my older installation, I assume it's because of the different HFS+ format. So I propose you test Adobe Reader on a Mac with case-sensitive volumes sometime.
Regards, Thomas Jahns

Which indicates that Apache is bombing out because of the HFS case-insensitive problem... anyone else agree?
So apart from getting the Wordpress people to fix this - can they? How do I go about changing the case sensitivity of the FS? Just don't tell me I have to re-install Leopard!!

I just discovered the crash logs... Can anyone give me a clue to what is cause the bus error from this?

  • Removing Case-Sensitive HFS

    Dear all,
I am using a MacBook Pro, and have been using this machine for so many months. When I started using it, I formatted it as Case-Sensitive HFS. However, by this time, Case-Sensitive is causing so many of my programs to not work correctly. So, I would like to remove it.
What would be the most effective way to reformat my MacBook Pro to use Case-Insensitive HFS, and putting all of my applications/data/preferences back on to it with out any hassles. I have an external Firewire HD. Is there a program that would automate this process for me? Or am I just so out of luck and have to go to the tedious backup and restore process.

Use the Restore option of Disk Utility to clone your system to the external drive. Format the external drive using Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and partition it using the GUID partition scheme. Then boot from the external drive and repartition and format the internal drive. Then using Restore clone back from the external drive to the internal drive.
Partition and Format a Non-startup Drive
    1. Open Disk Utility in the Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select your external hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Click on the Option button and check the option for the GUID partition scheme, then click OK. Set the number of partitions from the dropdown menu (use 1 partition unless you wish to make more.) Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the volume(s) mount on the Desktop.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process will take 30 minutes to an hour or more depending upon the drive size.
Clone Using Restore Option of Disk Utility
    1. Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
    2. Select the startup or source volume from the left side list.
    3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
    4. Drag the startup or source volume to the Source entry field.
    5. Select the backup or destination volume from the leftside list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
    6. Check the box to Erase Destination. Skip this step if you've already formatted the drive.
    7. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.

  • Acrobat cannot be installed on case sensitive formated mac

Any bug fixes available to get the acrobat installed on a Mac with case sensitive formatted hard disk? I formatted my mac withaout case sensitive but when I get the backup with my data from time capsule the original version comes back. Any help to this problem?

No, it's not possible. At this point Adobe programs do not support case sensitive volumes at all.

  • Acrobat Reader X Problem

I recently upgraded from Acrobat Reader 9 to Acrobat Reader X on Windows Vista. Ever since I have not been able to open any PDF documents that are sent to me via e-mail with Adobe Reader X although I can open up pdf files that are on my computer. When I try to open a e-mailed pdf  document with Acrobat Reader X opened on my desktop it gets opened by Acrobat Professional Version 8 which was preinstalled on my computer and cannot be deleted. This does not stay open because I did not subscribe to the software. I have tried reinstalling Adobe Rearder X as well as using the "Repair Adobe Reader Installation" feature in Adobe Reader "Help" and also via the Control Panel "Set Associations" feature. This has never happend previously with any other Adobe Reader upgrades. I am not certain what else can be attempted or how to resolve the problem?

    Hello Michael,
I think Galena01 was actually asking about Reader X and not Acrobat.  She was just trying to give additional information.
I have the same issue in that after installing Reader X, it is no longer possible to open pdf files attached to emails or from websites.  A Reader screen does appear but it remains blank even after several minutes and IE is often locked and a logoff / logon in Windows is required as Task Manager will not shut down IE in this situation.  The only workaround appears to be to open Reader X first, then open the online pdf file.
I believe Adobe have released faulty code.

  • Adobe acrobat reader 9 problem saving forms and copying photos

I used adobe acrobat reader 6 at
work and I have a form that I save with new data. I am also able to copy text and photos using version 6.
When I try to save edited forms and copy files from versiion 9 It wont allow me to do that.
Is their any way that I can copy text, photos and save forms in Adobe version 9?
When I try to save forms in version 9 it states that I am unable to save the form. When I try to copy text or photos it will not allow me to copy.

Are you talking about Reader or Acrobat. These are two different programs and Reader definitely has restrictions. Reader used to be called Acrobat Reader before version 6, but that has been gone a long time. The change was likely because of the confusion between Acrobat and Reader. The problems you indicate are suggestive of Reader, not of Acrobat.

  • Fill and save form in Acrobat Reader + checkbox problem

I use Acrobat Pro X to create fillable forms and then save the file as Reader Extended PDF - Enable Additional Features, and when I want to open it and fill it in in Acrobat Reader, I get a pop-up saying I can only save it as a blank document.
Another issue I'm having is that when I fill it in Preview and save it, everything saves except the checkboxes, they are always blank.
Could this be because I'm using Mac OS X Lion?

I'm sure I open the one that I save as enabled version but it does sound like the file is just being saved as a regular PDF. Here is the screenshot below of the security settings, I'm not sure exactly what the enabled version is supposed to show.
And here is the message I'm getting:

  • Consistant Acrobat Reader Update Problems

Why the hell can't adobe produce an acrobat reader update that doesn't feel the need to drop an icon on the desktop if it does not find one there?
This apparent need to mark you territory is highly annoying. Or can't you figure out how to disable it in the patch utility?

You mean Acrobat.com?  This is an outdated software which has been replaced with online services at https://www.acrobat.com/

    Hi Ganesh,
it's not a jdbc problem. when u try to query
using matches (%'s), it looks for exact match.
u can Compare the values by converting them
    to uppercase using to_upper.
    ex: where to_upper(table_field_name) = to_upper('%
    ur_string_value%') ...

I have a pdf file that contains both text and graphics. When I open it into Reader I can usually use the Select Tool to copy graphics out of the document. On one of my computers, though, I can't select any of the graphics. Is there an option that got accidentally switched or something? Why would I be able to select graphics on all but one of my computers?

I have found out the hard way that quite a few games will not install or will not run on a case-sensitive HFS+ formatted volume.

I didn't save a link, but I think I've read a similar message in the past month or so... are you on a Mac, and what is the volume name of your hard drive?

  • Case-Sensitive File System?

I downloaded the trial for Flash CS4 pro and it won't install on my computer.
    It says:
    System Requirements Error
This software cannot be installed because the file system of the OS volume is not supported. The OS volume should be local , writable and should have non case-sensitive file system
Anything I can do to get it to work? I have a MBP running Leopard on an intel processor.

The hard drive is internal. And Adobe tech doesn't work on the weekends. I checked the "get info" on my hd and it said it is case-sensitive,
that's your problem. Lots of apps have problems with case sensitive drives so you should never use case sensitive file system unless you have a compelling reason to do so. Your only recourse now is to move your data to a non case sensitive drive. Clone your hard drive to an external drive, boot from the leopard install DVD, reformat the drive non case sensitive and install leopard on it. then use migration assistant to migrate your data from the external.

  • Acrobat Reader X slow to open

Acrobat Reader X (10.1.0) is slow to open on some computers.
I've read that removing the 'Protected Mode' seeems to correct the problem.
    Is that right?
Is there other setups we should change?
    Thanks

Ok, so they are being opened directly in Acrobat/Reader.
In this case, Acrobat (or Reader) doesn't need to read the whole file
in the general case. A PDF file contains a large number of objects
describing what is on the pages, and the other aspects of the file.
There is an index to these objects.
So Acrobat starts by reading the index, then reads what it needs.
In some cases it may have to read next to nothing, to show the first
page of a document of many pages. In other cases it will have to read
all of the file, because (perhaps) it has one page and so everything
needed has to be read to show you that page.
The amount of data read has very little relation to the file size
(except that it should be no more than the file size). You have to
look at how the file is made up (e.g. page count? What is on pages?)
    to go further.

  • Case sensitive field in to_date function

    update "Ab_Order" set "OrderDate" = to_date("Order Date String", 'yyyy/mm/dd)
Here the OrderDate column is of type Date
"Order Date String" is varchar2. Iam trying to copy the data from "Order Date String" which contains data in this format '2011/04/24' to OrderDate column to perform some date functions
when I try to run this query it gives a error: ORA-01830: date format picture ends before converting entire input string
So I tried to run this query by creating a test table wit 2 columns : update testtable set column1 = to_date(field1, 'yyyy/mm/dd')
where column1 is date field and field1 is varchar2 and this worked.
So Iam assuming this is the problem with case sensitive fieldnames . As far as i know we should include case sensitive fields in double quotes. Is there anything else to do wit the to_Date function. Can anyone please let me know how to do that.

when I try to run this query it gives a error: ORA-01830: date format picture ends before converting entire input stringThat error occurs when when you have characters in the 1st argument that do not correspond to anything in the 2nd argument. For example:
    TO_DATE ( '30-Aug-2011 12:00'
         , 'dd-Mon-yyyy'
)In this example, TO_DATE doesn;t know what to do with the ' 12:00' at the end of the 1st argument. According to the 2nd arguemnt, there's only supposed to be 11 characters in the string. So it raises the ORA-01830 error.

It's more likely that you need to use SUBSTR (or some other string manipulation function) on "Order Date String" before using it in TO_DATE.
Whenever you have a problem, please post a little sample data (CREATE TABLE and INSERT statements, relevant columns only) from all tables, so people can re-create the problem and test their ideas.
Also post the results you want from that data, and an explanation of how you get those results from that data, with specific examples.
