Acrobat Reader crashs for users with network home folders

When network users logon to a MacBook running 10.6.4 Adobe Acrobat 10.0.1 will crash. The users home folder are on a Mac Mini server running 10.6.6. The Safari plug-in cashes also. A local standard user will run Acrobat without problems.

Try this website....just reply if it is works....TIA!

  • Safari 5 Crashes on Launch for Users With Network Homes

I have just upgraded 2 Macs to Safari 5, on both machines it crashes immediately on lauch when the users (who have networked home directories) launch the app. A test local user can run Safari 5 with no problems. The Internet Plug-Ins directory for uses looks pretty clean, and reading through this forum this seems like it's a known issue - anyone have a view on this?
    Many thanks,
    David

    Hi David
Possibly a cache issue. On the specific user accounts via the Finder: Library>Caches>com.apple.safari: move the cache.db database file to the trash, then restart Safari.
Forget the above...looked too quickly at the crash report (or it altered its text from one moment to the next throwing me a curve of sorts ).
Instead might be a RSS feed corruption issue. Go to the same User Library>PubSub folder. There, move the Feeds and Client.plist to the desktop, then restart Safari.
If Safari crashes, move those files back to their original location. Instead, same Library>Safari folder, move the WebpageIcons.db file to the desktop, then restart Safari.
Andy Ball in this thread also recommends moving all files in the Home/Library/Safari/Local Storage/ to the desktop.

  • How to make form field read only for users with certain permissions

We need to make two form fields read only for users with certain permissions. Kindly guide me on how to do this in Infopath. I searched and there is an option to disable to the column, but no option to select user permissions.
Please give your suggestion on this.
    thanks.

    Hi,
    See the link below:
    http://info.akgroup.com/blog-0/bid/69277/InfoPath-Restrict-visibility-to-users-in-a-SharePoint-Group
Here you can add the fomatting action on the field to disable the field if those users belong to certain Sharepoint group (does not matter the permission levels though). Hope it helps.

  • InDesign CS1 Unexpectedly quitting with Network Home Folders

    Hi
We have a Mac OSX 10.4 Server installation running on a G5 XServe with 5 Mac Users running Network Home Folders as well as other services. When the Mac users are working off the server with their files, InDesign unexpextedly quits or when they try to save their work back to the server it reports that they don't have access gto the sharepoint to save their files.
    Any ideas?
    Paul

    Paul,
We have had similar problems with CS1 and CS2, the only fix i have found is when the user cannot save, is to use the connect to server dialogue and to reconnect to the share point that way, in most cases the user can save after doing this. I have also seen this when the user is close to their disk quotas limit (some adobe programs need something like 2/12 times the file size to be able to save properly). For some reason it seems that CS will regularly lose its connection to the server, and i checked the Adobe site once and i am sure it said it was not supported in a network environment. It is certainly the worst program we have for problems since i have set up network home folders for students, second is Microsoft Orifice which also does the same thing.
Hope this is some help, its been driving me and the students mad for the last year.
    Good luck,
    Kevin.

  • Network Users with network homes not really working for me

I have with great pain setup a OS X Lion server on a Mac Mini that was supposed to be my central server to have 4 network users accounts and all the users data is stored on an external disk array with mounted network homes to the 2 iMacs and 2 Macbooks I have in my home.
I have gotten it all working and all my Macs are joined to the Open Directory and each User can login as a network users on any of the Macs and get their files via mounted home directory from the server. The home directories on the server are backed up with Time Machine.
I have found the following items that do not work proberly:
    1) Desktop backgrounds settings are just lost sometimes for whatever reason. Desktop background goes to default and you need to manually set back to the one you have selected. This happen mostly if users have their own desktop pictures.
    2) Keychain get's screwed up. The user often get the "Keychain doesn't exist to store ..." message and need to select to reset the keychain. Anything I have tried from "Keychain First Aid" to removing and have a new one created doesn't fix the problem. It keeps on coming back.
    3) iTunes Storage and AppStore are getting confused about authorized computers. This is because a user logs in from another computer and then iTunes store would tell the user this computer hasn't been authorized to play the purchase music. Same happens with iPhone apps from the AppStore. Apparently those two stores are not setup to hanlde network users proberly.
    4) Permission issues happen sometimes in Application like iPhoto where it would complain not being able to see photos or cannot add new photos to the library. Need to run a permission repair on the Iphoto Library to fix this.
    5) One critical one is that it's not really possible to restore files from Time Machine. The Time Machine backup is done on the server by an administrator account directly backing up the user directories. When you go into Time Machine on the server even the admin can drill down into the user directories so no restore possible. The individual users have no idea that there was ever a Time Machine backup done as Time Machine is not setup in their accounts on the individual Macs. This prevents any possible restore.
I reckon that many of the problems are related to having only one location for ~/Library as the individual Macs are writing their user related settings into this directory in a central location. So what happens is when something on iMac 1 and then I log in on iMac 2 that might not exactly match this Macs config and it get's confused throwing one of the above erors.
Trouble is witth central network home directory the way they mounted i can't exclude the ~/Library folder. The only option I can see is mobile account because I have seen in the preferences that when they sync the handle Library items differently.
Does anybody have any experience out there with this sort of thing and can advise what's the best way forward?
If i can't resolve this I'll go back to have network users with local home directories on each Mac and just setup for each user a network share to which they copy files if they want them available on other Macs. Not as nice but at least it works!
As a said note I did this to make things easier but it has up to now cost me trouble then i had before!

Haven't heard anything from anybody so probably to daunting a topic ...
I have now moved on to try Portable Home Directories (PHD) and syncing ... what a disaster!
First it took  me ages to get this right as the way the home directores are mounted on the clients from the server it's just weired which has to do with how AFP mounts are implemented. Since one AFP mount can't be mounted by several users on the same system they use a workaround of mounting it to a temp directory and then linking it back to where it should be. Of course this causes major problems.
Okay it kind of worked so let's move on to syncing PHD. First of all on initial creation it only sync a small portion of the directory that should be okay but on some of my accounts it never went passed this stage. It said it's all synced but it only had synced the first 10% or so of the data. I wasn't able to make it sync anymore.
On other accounts it correctly synced all the data down, or so I thought. Apparently a few sync session back and forth and 50-60% of the data was gone. On further investigation it turned out to be iTunes and iPhoto libraries. Turns out does don't sync probably via Home Sync!!!
Apple product is not able to probably syncing Apple specific library files!!!!
So here my warning to everybody: DO NOT USE PHD and HOME SYNC to sync your data as you will lose stuff if you have iTunes and/or iPhoto libraries with Lion OS X Server!!!
The whole Lion Server experience has been a disaster for me. Now I have a server that does file sharing and time machine backup sharing. I can do the same thing with a standard Mac using those services. What's the point of Lion Sever for Home if nothing works proberly?

  • How to set up Open Directory Users with local home folders?

    Hi folks,
i set up a Mac mini Server with the services DNS, DHCP, AFP and OpenDirectory running. Everything is working fine so far but i want my OpenDirectory Users to have their home folders locally on the clients harddisk. My Leopard clients are already bound to the directory but everytime i try to login the login window is shaking even when i use the Directory Administrator account. What am i doing wrong?
    Thanks.

(Did you read my other reply? You need to make it a portable account for the caching of login credentials.)
With network homes and portable account enabled on a machine you always run from the locally stored homefolder on that machine.
This homefolder syncs with the server network home folder for that account.
If either of these folders get corrupt or unintentionally altered files (permission problems) somehow, there is risk of losing files, syncing problems and more (can take long time to sync at login/out, during even without corruption - I prefer gigabit cable to WiFi for this for obvious reasons).
You at least need to monitor storage space in both places. You don't want either to fill up the disk (worse on server because several users can have their folders corrupted at the same time). Working quota settings / account is probably a good thing.
And you probably need to decide what is synced : all folders or just some (and when / how often).
You either do this form the server (you decide) or let the user have some say or a mix of these two.
You might want to leave out the user's personal files (music, movies and such) and also depending on emaIl client used, maybe not sync email if the client saves it like Entourage does it, in big ever changing database files. Might be better to just backup the mailserver if IMAP based.
If a user puts other large files in their homefolder (often on the Desktop) they can fill up the server fast. DVD-projects anyone?
Mixing different versions server/client might not work too good either.
So having said that, when syncing works it can be really good and you can restore a machine/account fast with pretty recent data. You can if in a hurry even log in from another machine using the account network home folder, getting access to the synced folders/files.
Using Time Machine it's a one way "sync" (more like "duplicate changed and new files" - which I like) and you have to manually set TM settings on the client for what is going to be backed up and when. I do atleast don't know how to do it from/on the server. This "less intervention by the server" can be a good thing but if your users don't "behave" you might want to be in the drivers seat "saving them from themselves".
TM backups can grow fast and probably demands more user interaction when storage space is used up.
As with all "backup" configurations you probably want some rotating media backup of both network homes and/or TM backups so you can do a restore. Of these two, network homes are the more important one to backup "further".

  • Syncing problem with network home folders

    Deaar Community,
I recently obtained a Mac Mini Server. I had a problem syncing my iPhone after moving all my data to network home folders.
Everytime I got the following message:
"Syncing cannot be enabled on this computer"
"Multiple computers are logged in to this same network home folder."
"Please turn off syncing on all other computers..."
There were no other computers syncing into the same directory.
This turned out to be a wrong error message.
I solved the problem by turing off the firewall on the server.
That was strange. Although the firewall rules were set to allow all traffic within the local zone iTunes had a problem with its presence.

Please be also sure that the permissions for the files are set correctly. In my case it turned out that the permissions for the iTunes Library were set in a way that the directories were owned by the server administrator's account. I had to reset the owner.
I also feel that there is a bug in the permissions administration in snow leopard server. I ended up with files that had a lot of permissions entries which were completely identical.
    i. e.
    Angela read only
    Steve read+write
    Steve read+write
    Steve read+write
    everyone none
Stll, a different error occurs randomly, but I finally managed to completely sync the iPhone. The error message now says that the iPhone could not be synced because the sync server could not sync the iphone. (?! This is somewhat redundant.)

  • Using Illustrator with Network home users

We have approx 300 macs all binding to an open directory server, all users log in with network home folders.
We have InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator installed locally on all machines.
InDesign and Photoshop launch fine, but Illustrator bounces in the dock for 20 seconds, then does nothing, causing the user to force quit.
I have done all the normal things, preferences, permissions, new user created etc.
A local account, (non-admin, or admin) works fine. I am NOT going to go around to 300 systems and create and manage a local account just so people can use Illustrator, that is insane, so.. what are the alternatives?
Does Illustrator have a problem with network mounted preferences? Because that is the only part I can see as affecting this.
Can you make Illustrator use a local TEMP or /tmp folder for preferences?
Do I just have to let everyone keep using Quark 8 forever? (Not likely)
    Thanks in advance.

This definitely sounds like something you might want to take up with Adobe Customer Support. (In case you didn't know, the people here are just other users, like yourself).
If your company bought 300+ licenses, I'm sure they'd be willing to help.
Will they be able to solve the problem? Well, that's a different issue altogether.

  • Network home folders owned by (unknown) user.

I am seeing something strange happening and i will try and describe it as best as i can.
This is happening in a middle school with about 750 users, 150 emacs(10.3.9) and 1 xserve(10.4.?).
I am not sure if this is a capacity issue but it seems to happen when there are lots of users trying to log into the computers. There are several different work groups the students can choose from when they log in and at any one time there may be 60 to 100 users logged in with network home folders and 1 or 2 other auto mounting share points.
Occasionally a few users will not be able to log in. A closer look will show that they are able to get passed the login screen and choose a workgroup and actually log into a desktop environment but they are not able to access their home folder. If you try and access anything in their home folder you will get an error msg informing you that you do not have sufficient access privilages. Of course the documents folder that normally sits on the dock is displayed as a question mark, and trying to launch any application will fail as it cant access the prefs file stored in the users library folder in their network home folder.
There are a couple different scenarios i have observed when looking at the permission information on the home folders.
Scenario one: when i look at the permissions on the home folder using get info tool, the owner is a completely different user. Doing an ls -sl from the command line shows the same information.
Scenario two: when i look at the permissions on the home folder using the get info tool the owner is (unknown). Doing an ls -al from the command line will show the owner as being a number. I assume this is a uid number, and the number is usually a uid that does not show up in workgroup managers current list of users, and i assume this is why the get info tool reports the owner as being (unknown).
I can fix the home folder by using a chown -r but dont know why this is happening to begin with.
Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions.
I have done some research on google but have not come up with anything concrete.

This is not a definitive answer, but you are certainly pushing the capabilities of a single XServe. As best I understand it, the XServe is really meant to be part of a deployment of OS X server in an environment such as yours. You should really have at least one replica server for authentication purposes and a separate device, such as an XServe RAID, or at least another server to house network home folders. You should at least consider getting another box, even a dual G5 or Mac pro, make it a replica, and split the home dirs between the new box and the XServe. Think about it. You have a lot of users authenticating a buncg of shares and at the same time a bunch of users zipping all sorts of big and little dats files (like office or appleworks files) as well as all the web browser chache files and whatever other cache files are flying around. That's an awful lot for the XServe's network connection, nevermind the read/writes on the HD.
So honestly, it would be really tough to tell if there;s just a bottleneck causing issues, or some other software/configuration error with that much traffic to a single server.
And this is in no way meant to be a lecture - I learned a lot by trying a similar feat on my network

  • IPhoto not showing up -- Network Home Folders on Windows server

When our users who have their home folder on a Windows server open iMovie, they can't access their iPhoto library within iMovie. The same is true for the 3rd party app, ComicLife. Is there something going wrong where the Windows server is screwing up whatever links the iPhoto library with other apps? Users who are on the Apple server are working just fine.
Thanks for any help you can give.
For reference, this is any mac client on 10.4.9 with Networked home folders going to either Win2003 server or Mac Server 10.4.10.

In case anyone else is looking... This was being caused by connecting to the home folders on the windows server using AFP. Switching it to SMB fixed the problem.

  • Network home folders: iCloud password question re-appears at every logon

    Hello,
Is there any way to enable iMessage and Facetime together with Network home folders. Im using Mavericks server (Directory services enabled) and two Mavericks clients. Every time a user that was using machine A logs on to machine B the iClouds password prompt re-appears and subsequently security questions are sent to iOS devices that a new device was added.
Is there a way to circumvent this? I think I tried once in combination with mobile home folders. However, even if I excluded iMessage/Facetime system files from syncing, questions still re-appeared.
The more iCloud services are tied into the system, the more you would like to use them; even if you are using network home folders.
    Regards,
    Thomas

    I also have this question.

  • Changing location of Network Home Folders

    Hi
We're about to add two 500GB mirrored drives to our Xserve in place of the two 250GB drives we have already. This means re-locating user's network home folders to a new sharepoint.
Is this simply a case of setting up the new home sharepoints, moving the homes to the shares and allocating the appropriate new home share path in the user's home folder setting? I tried a test user and the only thing that didn't work was the shortcuts in the sidebar, which can be replaced.
    Any pointers welcome, thanks

I've never tried this, but you may be able to use Carbon Copy Cloner (http://www.bombich.com/software/ccc.html) and backup everything to a USB/Firewire drive. Then put in your 500GB drives and restore the backup to the new drives. You then wouldn't have to create new sharepoints, everything would still be the same, just with more storage. Someone correct me if I'm wrong on this though....

  • Want to change the default save location- users have networked home dirs

I am doing some work for a school which is still using iMovie HD because it allows them to save their movie projects wherever they want. The issue is that iMovie 08 and 09 do not allow you to change the location in which they save their movies. Currently all users/students have network home folders, so their home directory, documents, etc all pull across the network. All students are limited to 1GB of space, and the system is an older G4 Server- 2GHz with 1GB of RAM and 2x 500GB hard drives. Since the students can make some large projects transferring that data back and forth can kill the server. Currently they are staying with iMovie HD so they can save it to the local hard drive, and when the student comes back in for class they sit at the same machine- thus giving them access to their stored movie files.
This summer they plan to upgrade both Xserves, but again internal storage in the Xserve is a joke and in my opinion not planned out properly. Which might require them to use one of the Apple Promise RAID units- major financial burden on a school.
I wanted to see if there was a way to change the default save location for iMovie 08 or 09 to the local storage rather then the "Home" folder for each user.
    Thanks so much!

    wrong info.
iM08/09 has a different file concept than iMHD6.
Both versions allow to store Events (=huge files) 'anywhere' to usb or firewire connected, hfs(+) formatted harddrives. the Project files (=small files) can be de-located from 'internal' drive with vers09, for 08 you have to use a socalled symLink to de-locate Project files.

  • Acrobat Reader crashing alot

    Hello,
My Acrobat Reader crashes frequently. I've uninstalled it, confirmed my system exceeds the system requirements, and installed it again. When it crashes, I receive an error message about something called Data Execution Prevention (DEP). Does anyone know if Adobe has a DEP-compatible version of Acrobat Reader X? Or how I can ask Adobe directly? Has anyone experienced similar issues? Do you have any other light to shine?
Thank you; I am just finding my way around here, so please forgive me if these questions are really basic and/or ought to be unnecessary.
    Thank you. ~ Anne Marie

    I appreciate the response.
Operating system: Windows Vista Home Premium (copyright 2007, Service Pack 2)
When it crashes, the message is "Adobe Reader has stopped working. A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available."
The next one is: Adobe Reader was closed.
Then, a longer message comes up near the program icon at the bottom strip across my window, about the Data Execution Prevention (DEP) -- it is one of those that is only there fleetingly, and I cannot copy it down in time before it disappears. However  it contains a link to an FAQ about Data Execution Prevention (DEP).
I gather that Windows feels obligated to close the program for one of two reasons: either security has been breeched (I ruled that out) OR there's an issue with how/what part of my system's memory is being accessed.
    Thank you!
