Acrobat Reader versus Acrobat Professional or Standard

When I use Safari and I want to open my PDF outside the Browser, how does Safari choose between Acrobat Reader, Professional or Standard?
For example: I have Acrobat Reader 7 and Professional 7 installed on my G5 (10.4.4). I have changed the preferences in Acrobat Reader and Professional to open outside the Browser. How does it make it's decision? I could not find a preference in Safari to choose which one I wanted.
I'm sure it is somewhere, I just can't find it.
G5   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

Hi Julia
Welcome to Apple Discussions
You don't need to use Reader if you have Adobe Professional 7 installed. Professional allows you to read, create, or edit PDF files. With Reader you can only "read" the PDF. I suggest "uninstalling" Reader by moving the app. to your trash.

  • Acrobat Pro versus Acrobat Reader

    Hi
I apologize about this very basic question. However, a Google search failed to return an answer, so I am asking it here.
I have Adobe Acrobat Pro 9 installed on my Windows 7 (64-bit) machine, as part of the Adobe CS4 package. I keep all Adobe products (including Acrobat) updated to the latest versions/patches.
My question concerns viewing PDF documents in my web browser, such as Firefox or Chrome. I am concerned about some of the vulnerabilities in Acrobat Reader (and Acrobat Pro), which allow the introduction of malware by viewing PDF documents on the web.
So, specifically, I would like to know:
    1. Since I already have Acrobat Pro installed, I don't really need Acrobat Reader, do I? Under Control Panel > Installed Programs on my computer, I do not see Acrobat Reader installed, and yet I am able to view PDF documents in my browser. I am assuming this is because Acrobat Pro includes a reader, and this is what is invoked by the browser when it encounters a PDF document. Am I right in thinking this?
    2. I wanted to turn OFF javascript in the Acrobat Reader. Again, since I don't seem to have Acrobat Reader installed, I turned it off in Acrobat Pro (this is again for security reasons, to avoid some exploits which use javascript inside the Acrobat Reader). Will turning off javascript inside Acrobat Pro also turn it off in whatever software my browser is using to display PDFs?
    Thanks.

    You seem to be covered.
No, if you have Acrobat, you don't need Reader plus, it is a non-recommended nor supported setup. They have issues with each other when they are both installed on the same machine.
Will turning off javascript inside Acrobat Pro also turn it off in whatever software my browser is using to display PDFs?
    Thanks.
Yes. Your browser is using Acrobat Pro to view the PDF.

  • Unable to install Acrobat Reader and Acrobat Flash Player

    Hello,
I am trying to install Acrobat reader and acrobat flash player on my Laptop (Lenovo Thinkpad T420) after installing windows 8.1 64 bits, after successfully downloading both software, the adobe reader installer opens with a dark grey box and nothing else happens.
The installer can't be closed except from the task manager.
I have tried to start as administrator, enable javascript, different browsers, restart the laptop, ... all gave me the same result.
Below image shows what i am receiving.
    Kindly advise.

Run the Acrobat Cleaner Tool and reinstall from scratch.

  • When Acrobat 3D versus Acrobat Professional

I am looking to just publish interactive and animated drawings, mostly from SolidWorks, to the web. From the (appreciated) feedback I have gotten, it sounds like I really only need Acrobat Professional to do this, although with Acrobat Professional I *may* only be able to convert .u3d files which I am assuming most CAD applications can produce. Is there any benefit in this case for me to use Acrobat 3D? It sounds like 3D provides the benefits of collaboration and shared mark-ups, but for publishing interactive content Acrobat professional can do it.
Also, if interested, I am possibly looking at building an animation as seen here http://www.interfaceinnovations.com/build.htm. Any suggestions on what Adobe tools will help with building such an animation?

" to convert .u3d files which I am assuming most CAD applications can produce"
Wrong. Only very few CAD application will export *.u3d. I'm not sure if SolidWorks does. For creating "animations" like the ones you linked, I'm not sure if Acrobat 3D is the right tool. What I see is a) rendered stills, switched on demand (well, the magically glowing buttons may be a looped sequence of 3 or 4 images), and b) no interactivity within the image itself.
In my eyes you need something that simply renders CAD files. This *could* be Acrobat 3D, but its rendering abilities are limited, and its camera controls are everything but intuitive. Once rendered, you can bring the interactivity into it using e.g. Flash.
For rendering purposes, you might want to look at the Cinema 4D Engineering Bundle (including the PolyTrans CAD converter). But this depends on the required quality of the renderings. If the simple, Open-GL-like appearance is enough, you could use Acrobat 3D.

  • Both Acrobat Reader and Acrobat x Pro MAc 10.1.4 crash

    This is very annoying.
Where can I get support for this? I have sent in numerous crash logs, re-installed repeatedly, tried to use Time Machine all to no avail.
Which aprt of Adobe Support deals with this please?

The only thing common I think I see is Fonts. Unless the acrobat Fonts are removed  they are no installed upon a reinstall.
If you using a Mac use FontBook to look at find bad fonts or repair fonts Also Mountain Lion (OSX.8.x) is the toughest/Strictest on Fonts than any other previous system.

  • Acrobat Reader X print menu functionality missing

I am running XP Pro serv pk 3 and just today 8-25-11, I noticed that Reader looks brand new-? So when I go to print, I find that now I cannot set a page range. The cursor goes in the field but will not let me change anything. As I indicated, I know for a fact that the "look" of the program is totally new, and when I check the date of the program folder (both ADOBE ACROBAT 10.1.0 PROFESSIONAL and STANDARD are there) the date says 8-10-11. My company rolls out updates all the time but this problem is definitely brand new today(it worked yesterday).
I could not find this on the known issues page and would really appreciate any input from anyone who may be aware of it.
    Thanks, DC

    Thanks for the clarification.

  • Text/html processing error with Acrobat Reader when sending to database

    Hi everyone,
I have a problem that occurs in certain versions of the Acrobat Reader, with Acrobat Professional the error message does not pop up.
In Acrobat Reader however, when sending the form to a php file to fill a database an error pops up
"Content type text/html couldn´t be processed"
Nevertheless it works fine, except the fact that the confirmation "successfully sent" that should pop up (and does in Acrobat Professional)  does not appear due to this processing error. What can I do?
    Thanks for supporting!

    Hi,
I'll only attempt the first part:
See this discussion where event.target.path.toString().substring(0, 4); was used to get the first four letters of the path. If that equalled "http", then the form was opened in a browser.

I can't contribute on the other issues.

  • Acrobat Reader 11.0.03 causes all programs to open in Reader

I installed 11.0.03 update, and all my other computer programs are being forced to open in Acrobat Reader.  I had to uninstall Reader to be able to open my other programs.  Now I am without a pdf reader.  Any solutions?

It is not clear what you mean other programs opening in Reader. That does not make sense. Just what was the problem. If you install Reader, it is by default the program to open PDF files, but nothing else usually. So it is not clear what you mean. If you wanted a PDF to open in something else you could have selected the default, but apparently that is not an issue since you can no longer open PDFs.
By the way, Reader and Acrobat are not the same problem. The names have not been linked since version 5 when the Reader was referred to as Acrobat Reader and Acrobat alone referred to the program this forum covers -- the paid for product that creates PDFs. So you would have today either Adobe Reader or Adobe Acrobat. The Adobe can be left off since it is simply the name of the company, not the product.

  • Limiting shown buttons when opening 3D PDF in acrobat reader

    Hi guys.
I want to create a 3D PDF to be viewed on the web. I don't think that all buttons(rotate, spin, pan, zoom, etc.) in the 3D toolbar are necessary so I would like to choose which buttons will be shown when the user click where it says
    "Click to Activate 3D"
Is there a way t do this? If so, is there a way to lock those so the user cannot activate them?
    Thank you.

    Hello,
There is an option to manage display of the 3D toolbar whichi only available at the creation of the 3D PDF file (within Acrobat Pro Extended only..):
    Go to Edit/Preferences
Select a 3D format then press Edit Settings
Under 3D Panel there is a check box called "Show 3D toolbar by Default" Unselect this option then press OK.
Convert a 3d file to PDFthen save the file
Open the PDF within Acrobat Reader or Acrobat Pro Extended, the 3D toolbar will not be displayed after activating the 3D content..
    Hope this can be helpful

    Welcome to our community, Vinesh
Firstly, I'm thinking you have wandered into the wrong
community. You are asking a question about Acrobat and this
community is focused on Adobe Captivate. If you want to ask further
questions about Acrobat, you should consider asking in the Acrobat
community. You may do so by clicking the link below:
    Click
here to visit the Acrobat community
Now for the gist of what you asked. There is a huge
difference between Acrobat Reader and Acrobat. One uses Acrobat as
the application used to create content that is later viewed by
someone with the basic Acrobat reader. The reader is a free
download for all. You have to purchase Acrobat in order to create
content that you produce for the reader to present.
Hopefully that makes a bit of sense. If not, try posting the
same question over in the Acrobat forums and see what someone
    replies with.
    Cheers... Rick

  • I have the latest version of acrobat reader installed (10.1.4.38) but it still says it needs updating

Problem started out of the blue a few days ago. When I go to a page with a PDF file, it says "Plugin is vulnerable... click to start anyway" (paraphrased). When I look in Add-Ons, it has the following line about the Acrobat Reader "adobe acrobat is known to be vulnerable and should be updated 10.1.4.38". That is the latest version available.
I tried updating it, removing it from my computer, reinstalling, etc, several times. No improvement - I still get the same message.

Hi garyd11, has Adobe Reader ever run correctly on your PC, in other words, is this a new problem? Actually, regardless of your answer, if Adobe Reader has crashed, I suspect that restarting Windows might help.
