Acrobat replacement?

I'm tired of the compromises that I have made over the years for features of Acrobat Standard that don't work. I am using version 9.4.5.
My current problems are: 10 to 15 seconds to open a PDF file; frequent crashing of the program; Acrobat freezing for 15 to 20 seconds when attempting to use the typewriter tool; typewriter tool text properties grayed out.
This program is much too expensive for me for how poorly it performs.
What I need in a PDF product in order of importance is the following: print to PDF from any Windows file or webpage; password protection; add text to a page without affecting the current text: add graphic markups to a page; digitally sign a page; create form fields; modify existing text.
Can anyone suggest another PDF product?

I would like to find an acrobat replacement too. I'm not talking about upgrading to another junk product from Adobe, I need someting that works all the time. I am currently using acrobat 9.4.5 pro, yes, the updated version that is apparently unfixable. It's been like 2-3 weeks since the update and immediate response from end users that there is a big problem and still no patch.
I just got done extracting several pages (100+) that were scattered throughout a several thousand page pdf document. Not only did it take roughly 5-7 times the amount of time having to use the "workaround" to select pages, but when I went to save the extracted pages, acrobat crashed. All extracted pages were lost, gone forever! I guess I should have known something like this would happen and should not have saved the large document first. If this sort of failure only happened once, I can understand, but it almost daily that acrobat fails me. What happened to the Adobe I used to know?
So Adobe, how do I pull these pages out of thin air? The cost of using Adobe Acrobat is too high for our firm! Has anyone used any of the other pdf programs that have Bates Stamping ability?

Acrobat replaces NTFS permissions of Temp folder

OS: Windows 7 Pro x64 SP1
Acrobat Pro v11.0.1
I have set location of my Temp folder to another drive F:.
This folder is pointed by both %TEMP% and %TMP% environment variables.
My user (ex. "SomeDomain\SomeUser") belongs to Adminstrators group and set as owner of this folder.
Acrobat is run under regular privileges of my account (UAC is default).
At random time intervals Acrobat would change the NTFS file permissions of the Temp folder and remove my user (i.e. "SomeDomain\SomeUser") from the permissions list.
Here is an audit event log entry (EventID 4670):

Solution is simple
1. Create one small partition in your hard disk (1 GB or less)
2. Format that new partition with FAT32
3. Put your personal temp folder in that partition
4. Enjoy

Acrobat replaces single-byte character codes with octal strings in content stream, how to prevent?

I have thousands of PDFs, mainly text, all fonts are subsets, indexes starting from 1. In page content stream I see character indexes represented as single bytes: binary 1, 2, 3, etc. But, after optimizing files with Acrobat (I use it to save to 1.6 version with compressed object streams etc.) those single bytes become octal strings like \001, \002, ... . Raw stream size is increased by factor 1.5, and after a flate filter there is still 1-2 kB increase for each page. As there are thousands of pages, total (and totally useless) increase is considerable and doesn't go well with my goal of creating as small package as possible.
Can this behavior be prevented (with something like registry setting)?

I don't have a solution but note that on Unix-like systems a newline is a single byte 0x0a and on DOS-like systems (Windows) it is a sequence of bytes 0x0d and 0x0a.
Some text editors handle both.
I'm not sure but I think on Unix,
new String("\n").getBytes() equals new byte[] { 0x0a }
and on DOS
new String("\n").getBytes() equals new byte[] { 0x0d, 0x0a }

Link action to Bookmark in Acrobat 9 Pro?

Is it possible to have a Link (created with the link tool) refer to a named Bookmark within the the same document? There is no submenu item for that. Is there a Javascript I can put in the Link Actions dialog? Other solutions?
The problem I'm having is when I replace a page in a PDF file, all the existing links and bookmarks are preserved (including location and zoom level) EXCEPT that the layer visibility action is nonfunctioning (it's still listed in the Actions list though). There are lots of links, amny of which go to the same bookmarks, so I thought it would be great if all I had to do was reset the layer visibility for 100 bookmarks rather than the 500 links!

I need a Link to a Bookmark because when I replace a page in a PDF in Pro 9, the links and bookmarks almost work, except that the Layer Visibility is lost, and setting the Layer Visibility for 100 bookmarks is a lot better than 500+!
The procedure I'm using is:
Create document in Illustrator CS4 Mac
Export as PDF w/editing capabilities and layers
Add Links and Bookmarks in Acrobat Pro 9 - document done for this cycle
Update original Illustrator file in Illustrator (errors, changes, adds, etc) and save as replacement PDF
In Acrobat, Replace page of current PDF with the replacement PDF
Result: links and Bookmarks retained, except for Layer Visibility.
If I could find a Javascrpt to go to to a Bookmark, to put in the Links Action box, that would be great. Or any other solution, like Adobe should add this feature.

Acrobat 9 : How to modify subject & body of email when using send button in PDF

Hello,
I have to create several PDF forms who will be send to my mailadress.
I already googled a lot but can't find a way to modifiy the subject of the mail and the bodytext of the mail when I use the send button in the purple bar on top of the PDF form.
My acrobat 9 "speaks Dutch and says :
Mailsubject: Ingevulde formulieren verzenden
Body tekst: Instructies voor het toevoegen van het formulier aan een reactiebestand.
Dubbelklik op de bijlage.
Acrobat vraagt u een reactiebestand te selecteren.
I managed to create a send button "in" the PDF with a javascript
this.mailDoc({bUI: true, cTo: "[email protected]", cSubject: "My own subject ", cMsg: "blah blah blah"});
But this has no influence on the top button and it also does not check if the mandatory fields are filled.
Can anyone help ?

When you distribute a form using the distribute process, Acrobat replaces whatever code you placed in the button with its own. You do not need to use the distribution process to set this up. Instead, Reader-enable the form and your button should work like you want.

Replacing pages text but preserving «form» pages... A real problem of (wasting) energy and time?

Section A: a bunch of pages with text that are having a lot of changes.
Section B: a bunch of pages with forms already approved.
(Of section B have a already a PDF file with fields, buttons, links, etc, absolutely perfect)
Problem: change in section A a lot of pages.
Two ways: one, is replacig in the new PDF —now with many changes in section A — just the PDF section B pages already right.
In this procedure pages are indeed changed but field are lost...; the second way (I am using against any logic as time and energy are related) is copy-paste all the fields and buttons from the «good» PDF of section B to the new PDF with changes already made in section A.
What's wrong?
Why the file gets sick and does not allow to do this?
Going back to export as IDML is not enough.
Inserting the perfect pages of section B in the new PDF (either removing before or later the inadequate pages) damages the TOC in the new PDF and the hyperlinks related no page numbering get dead.
And inserting/replacing new section A in the old section B claims again for a loss of links as the PDF file has been made up of two parts. (?)

Font Replacement Problem

I'm creating scannable forms that contain preprinted text (e.g., "201" in year fields that will always be 201x). When saving as PDF, Acrobat replaces the preprinted AvantGarde text font ("not available") with another that doesn't scan. I'm pretty sure I just have to add the location of the FrameMaker font folder to Acrobat Distiller's font locations, but I don't see the AvantGarde font file anywhere. Any ideas?

MIke, thanks for your response. I'll submit a help request to our techies. Hope they can get their hands on an appropriate disk; we have a large LAN with a variety of equipment. Sometimes the [seemingly] simplest request can be difficult to resolve.

Acrobat will not accept license code after installing cs4 premium upgrade

We just upgraded to CS4 premium, from CS3 premium. In doing so acrobat replaced Acrobat 8 pro with Acrobat 9 pro.
All our tools only work in Acrobat 8 pro, so we unistalled the Acrobat 9 pro and the software will not accept the keys from the product boxes that was used to install the software. the 30 day trial period comes up where you can enter a number or buy "version 9".
Is there anything special to fix this mess that anyone has found?
We are a printing company and use tools from enfocus, quite, and other special plugins that only support up to version 8?
Before we totally uninstall CS4 premium we wanted to see if anyone else has had this issuse or knows who to get with at Adobe to get a key that will work for the licensed software.

Word2010 form to PDF - check boxes aren't recognized by Acrobat 10

Hello fellows!
I've encountered a weird problem - when converting a form created in Word 2010 to PDF and running the field auto-detection wizard in Acrobat 10, the check boxes originally created in Word are recognized by Acrobat as text fields and not controls. Tried replacing the word 2010 check box with a "legacy" check box - no difference. Any suggestions?

Did you ever find a satisfactory solution to your problem? Being a forms newbie, I naively designed a beautifully formatted, complex, multi-page form in Word 2010, with checkboxes everywhere in tables.
Then when I imported it into Acrobat X forms wizard, it translated 90% of the checkboxes into text fields, and some into radio buttons.
I started fixing it in Acrobat, replacing the "text" boxes with checkboxes, but the auto-sizing and alignment commands don't work very well and it's super difficult to get all the new checkboxes to line up perfectly and look professional the way they do in Word. VERY time-consuming.
Ugh. I'd really love it if I didn't have to start over from scratch and could "run a script" as some have suggested..."Another option is to use a script after running the wizard to convert those files to check-boxes." - Gilad D

Deploying an Acrobat addin for Acrobat 7 and 8

Hi,
Is there an elegant / standard way of deploying a custom addin for use with either Acrobat 7 or 8. Technically, the addin we have written will work for both versions of Acrobat.
As I understand it, we just need to deploy to the correct add-in folder depending on the version of Acrobat installed. We are looking to install the addin via and MSI and Marimba.
Is there an environment variable for the addin path. We would like to avoid deploying to both paths, or having multiple packages (one for each adobe version).

For Acrobat 6.0+ you can use:
[HKLM\SOFTWARE\Adobe\Adobe Acrobat\X.0\InstallPath]
(Default)="C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat X.0\Acrobat"
Replace X with the major version you are looking for. There may be multiple versions listed (my system has 7.0, 8.0 and 9.0 because I have had, at some point, each of those versions installed) but the InstallPath key will only exist for the currently installed version.

Editing a PDF Form while Maintaining Fields

I created a form in Adobe Illustrator CS4, saved as a PDF file, Opened in Adobe Acrobat Pro 9 and created interactive fields. I need to make very minor text revisions to the final interactive document. I cannot seem to do this in the final document without losing all of my fields and attributes. It seems that I am forced to recreate all of the fields to make minor changes - which is very time consuming. Does anyone have suggestions? Are there 3rd party programs that will allow this?

That's odd, but what you should do is edit the source document and recreate the PDF. Then in Acrobat, replace the old pages with the nuew using "Document > Replace Pages".

TOC and hyperlinks in PDF

CS3 (5.0.4) on Mac 10.5.7 (Leopard)
When I generate a TOC, if i select the "Create PDF bookmarks" option, the entries also create hyperlinks to the location within the PDF.
In the PDF, if I click on the TOC entry, it jumps to the page where the entry starts.
All well and good.
Where I am confused is the Hyperlinks panel in InDesign.
These hyperlinks do not show up in the panel.
However, if I select the text in the TOC and choose "Hyperlink Options..." in the Hyperlink panel, it gives me the options for that link, including a weird name, such as .7890 that I assume is auto-generated.
So it seems that there is a hyperlink there, I just don't see it in the panel.
(I do however, see a list of bookmarks in that panel.)
If I create a TOC where the "create PDF bookmarks" is not checked, it still seems to create hyperlinks, they just aren't active, or they don' t have a destination(?). If I select text in the TOC and choose "Hyperlink options..." it shows me the options (the hyperlink type shows up as "All Types"). Furthermore, I can't select the text and choose "New hyperlink" which indicates to me that there is already a hyperlink there.
Can someone explain to me how the creation of hyperlinks/bookmarks from a TOC is working and if I can make the auto-generated hyperlinks appear in the hyperlinks panel?
I've read through the sections in Help and in RealWorld InDesign CS3.

Header in pdf overlaping body of pdf doc:using fop

I'm generating PDF file with FOP, but my header contents are not fixed, they keep on changing with each report and with each locale of browser.
Because of this my static width / height setting like
margin-top="0.25in"or
margin-top="0.95in"is failing for some reports, i.e my header is overlapping with body contents.
Is there a generic solution which can fix this?
More details:
Header of pdf is overlapping on the contents of body of pdf, because of which I am not able to see my top contents in my body of pdf document.
I want to way by which ,if header contents are increased then body should start after the layout of header.
But in pdf api it is required to set:

<fo:region-before extent="1.25in"/>
<fo:region-after extent="0.50in"/>which is causing problem bec. when my text in header increases beyond 1.25in which is specified in

PDF from PostScript file with hyperlinks/bookmarks

Is there a way to include hyperlinks and bookmarks when printing to Postscript file.
Direct Export to PDF creates a huge file size so I need to go the PostScript/Distiller route.

Would it not be possible to use the famous Acrobat Replace Pages featurebug/bugfeature here? (Hyperlinks on, and bookmarks to pages do not get replaced when you replace those.)
Something like:
1. Export to PDF.
2. Print and Distill.
3. Replace all pages in the document from step 1 with those from step 2.
4. Done.

Posting a fill in form on web with pdf sample items

If I wanted to show some samples of something (pdfs-1 pagers)
the user could choose from. ..Say there were 4 of these samples.
and for an Order "Ticket"
the user completed some fill in fields that would become the

Normally you would create the underlying form in a word processor type application or page layout application and create a PDF. You'd then add the interactive form fields in Acrobat.
If you ever need to modify the underlying page contents, edit the original source document in whatever program you use and create a new PDF. Then in Acrobat, replace the old pages with the new, and any fields, links, code, etc. will be retained.
On Windows, there is a separate application that comes with Acrobat Pro called LiveCycle Designer. It allows you to create the entire form from scratch, but I find it more complicated and harder to work with. Such forms are known as XFA forms, while forms created in Acrobat are known as acroforms. I prefer to use a program like InDesign (which has great table features) to create the base form and add the interactive fields in Acrobat. It's much simpler and the resulting acroforms are more backwards compatible and work in a wider range of non-Adobe PDF viewers.
