Acrobat requires password to open

Using apple mac I had a HD crash weeks ago and got new HD. Now have MAVERICKS OS and reinstalled CS4 and updated to Acrobat pro 9. Every time I open a new acrobat document it requires a system password. This did not happen in previous OS before the crash. I have looked in System preferences and can't find anything. Did search in google and found the suggestion to remove the /library/preferences files from John Hawkinson (May 2011). I only have these 4 files in con.adobe.arcobat -> pdfviewer.plist / adobeOnlingHelp.plist / PDFAdminSettings/plist / versioncueCS4.
Hw do i turn off this password requirement?
Thanks in advance for any help.

This is because of Acrobat 9 had a "self-healing" mechanism that kicked in every time it launched that checked and tried to repair the installation.  Consequently when the OS changed to a more secure paradigm this might cause the behavior you see.
JAMF has this really cool tool that "might" fix this, but I have never used it.

  • Installed Acrobat Pro 9 - requires password to open any PDF & botches InDesign exports to PDF

Installed CS4 on my new Mac, using the downloaded installation file. Everything works except Acrobat. I uninstalled Acrobat & reinstalled it. Same problems remain:
1a. Everytime I open a PDF, I get this message:  "Adobe Acrobat Pro wants to make changes. Type your password to allow this." I have to enter the username & password for my computer to open every PDF. Then they open correctly.
1b. If I open Acrobat from the Applications folder, without opening a file, I get the same message & must enter username & password to open Acrobat.
    2. From InDesign, I export PDFs using File > Export. The PDFs have little rectangles for about half the text in the entire document. I routinely export both hi-res (Print Quality) and lo-res (Smallest File Size) PDFs in InDesign & this happens with all of them.
Most of the work I do results in PDFs. None of them have password protection or other security. I don't see anything in Preferences that looks like it would relate to these issues. Help, please!

Go the the Applications -> Utilities folder. In there you will find the Disk Utility app. When you run that application, you can select your hard drive. Then click on the Fix Permssions button.

  • Linked PDF with Open Doc password- false, Edit Permissions- true, requires password to open AI doc

I would like to password protect editing of a placed PDF. I have set the PDF Open Doc password to false and the Edit permissions to true. Illustrator still requires the permissions password to OPEN the Illustrator document. This would defeat the purpose, no?

Well, it does seem to work, sort of. The Illustrator document with a placed, protected PDF asks for the password when opening. The password is also required when attempting to embed (edit) the linked PDF, as expected.
I would think the correct behavior should be  for the Open Document password protection (or lack of) to control opening the Illustrator document and the Edit Permissions password to be applied when embedding or flattening the linked PDF, making it accessable to editing. Acrobat seems to be able to make this distinction.
This would be a significant feature for users who need to restrict editing of sensitive portions of their layouts while allowing necessary prepress work downstream.

  • PDFs Requiring Password to Open When That Option is NOT Configured

    TSPAM:
Problem: PDFs that were created WITHOUT a password required to open are asking for passwords before they will open.
Expected Result: PDFs should open without asking for an open password unless they were configured to require a password to open.
Analysis: PDFs were created via export from InDesign CS6 to PDF Version 1.7 (Adobre PDF Library 10.0.1). Document restrictions were defined as, Allowed: Printing, Content Copying for Accessibility, Commenting, Filling in Form Fields, Signing, Creation of Template Pages; other abilities Not Allowed. Restrictions use password security. Require a password to open is NOT set active.
Once posted online, several users report that the PDFs are requiring a password to open.
I can't duplicate that behavior--meaning that I'm never prompted for an open password--in Acrobat X or XI on Windows 7x64 or Mac OS 10.8x or in Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer, or Safari on those systems.
The PDFs in question are linked from this page: http://iampariah.com/blog/creative-pro/cs6-keyboard-shortcut-cheatsheets.php

    Hi Pariah,
There are two things here, 1) what is the version of the unencrypted PDF, and 2) how was the file encrypted.
The "may not display correctly" message occurs when the version of the PDF file is greater than what the PDF viewer (for us that's either Acrobat or Reader) understands. As an example, when Acrobat 1.0 came out 20 years ago it only understood PDF version 1.0. When Acrobat 2.0 was released it understood PDF version 1.1 and earlier. By Acrobat 8 it understood PDF version 1.7. If you had a PDF file that was version 1.7 and you opened it in Acrobat 7 (which I'm sure you've figured out only understands PDF v 1.6) then you'd get the "may not display correctly" message. Acrobat 7 would do its best to render the PDF, but if it came across something it just didn't understand it wouldn't (couldn't) display it.
Encryption is a bit different. Let's say you encrypt a file using Acrobat 10 and use the AES 256-bit encryption algorithm. If someone where to try and open the file in version 8, which only understands AES 128-bit encryption the the file could never be opened.
Finally there is the issue about how the password is saved. Acrobat 10 and later use a different methods of Unicode normalization and canonicalization then previous version, so if you've save a password using the Acrobat 10 or later settings then earlier versions cannot properly check that the password you've typed in matches what the document author set. I know this message thread started with the notion that there is no Document Open password, but it's not quite that simple. There really is a password, its just set to "NULL". However, Acrobat (and Reader) versions 9 and earlier cannot reconcile "NULL" set in 10 as they would "NULL" set in 9 and before. Thus, when the file tries to open in an earlier version you get prompted to reenter the password.

  • Requiring Password to Open Application

Hello, my friends got into my computer and started talking to people on my IM client, Adium, is there a way to require a password to open adium, i want them to be able to use my computer, but not certain apps, can i just have the password for that app?

It isn't possible (as far as I know) to require a password to open specific applications.
What you should really do in this situation is create a separate account for your friends and enable Fast User Switching. When you walk away from the computer, switch to the login window or log in to the other account, and you're safe. The computer will still be fully functional, but things specific to you — like your accounts in Adium — will be safe. You can even try Leopard's special guest account, which erases itself when the person is done using it.

    Back up all data.
This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership and access-control lists to the default. If you've set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it, but you do need to follow the instructions below.
    Step 1
If you have more than one user, and the one in question is not an administrator, then go to Step 2.
Triple-click anywhere in the following line on this page to select it:
    { sudo chflags -R nouchg,nouappnd ~ $TMPDIR..; sudo chown -R $UID:staff ~ $_; sudo chmod -R u+rwX ~ $_; chmod -R -N ~ $_; } 2>&-
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window by pressing command-V. I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key after pasting.
You'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The command may take a few minutes to run, or perhaps longer if you have literally millions of files in your home folder. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) to appear, then quit Terminal.
    Step 2 (optional)
Take this step only if you have trouble with Step 1, if it frightens you, or if it doesn't solve the problem.
Start up in Recovery mode. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
    Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open.
In the Terminal window, type this:
    res
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
    resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password dialog will open. You’re not going to reset a password.
In the dialog, select the startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if it's not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if it's not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
    Select
     ▹ Restart
    from the menu bar.

  • Require password to open Adobe Reader X file

I cannot open a PDF file sent to me from my PCA.  Adobe tells me I have to have a passwrod to open the file.
HOW DO I CREATE SUCH A PASSWORD?

This is something that the creator of the PDF would have set, so you should ask them what the password is.

You saved it after setting the Password? :

In Word Perfect I could "lock" a document by requiring a password to open the document.  How can I do this in Pages?

Inspector > Document > Require password to open
Be aware this is for .pages documents only, it will not work for exported Word/pdf docs.

  • Password protected PDFs from Acrobat XI cannot be opened in DC when the password contains a hyphen

I have documents created in Acrobat XI that are protected with an Open Password.
The password contains a hyphen "-".
They open fine in Acrobat XI, but Acrobat DC refuses to open them: "The password is incorrect. Please make sure etc..."
Documents created in Acrobat DC that are protected with passwords that contain a hyphen do not have this problem.
I am working with the latest Mac OSX 10.10.3
Luckily I still have Acrobat XI installed, but it is a problem for those with the new Acrobat DC and the new Reader.
    Ton

AFAIK there were no code changes in this area between XI and DC, Are you doing all your processing on the same platform (Mac) or does the problem manifest when you move encrypted PDF between Mac and Windows. As I recall the problem that I was talking about manifest when encrypted PDFs were moved between platforms. If you do move your PDFs between platforms, then which Acrobat version do you use on which platform? Is it Acrobat DC on both Mac and Windows? On which platform/Acrobat version do you encrypt and on which platform/Acrobat version you try to open?

  • Outlook 2007 now requires administrator password to open

I have been using office 2007 since 2007 and this has never occurred. Now when I open Outlook, as a Standard User it asks for my Administrator Password. When I am logged on to my other account which has Administrator privileges and a password, Outlook
opens right up and the User Account dialog doesn't appear. This doesn't happen when I open Word; it is specific to Outlook.
I don't know how this happened and I don't know how to correct it.
When I am logged in as the Standard User:
Under Properties, Shortcut tab, Advanced,  Run as Administrator is grayed out and not checked.
In the Compatibility Tab, in the Privilege Level section, Run this program as an administrator
IS CHECKED but grayed out. But when I click on
Change settings for all users in the Compatibility tab (I am asked for my Admin password) I see that the
Run as Administrator box is unchecked there (not grayed out). I have tried checking it, clicking on Apply and then unchecking it and clicking on apply again but the checked, Grayed out box in the Privilege Level section remains
    checked.
In the Security Tab, Everyone, SYSTEM, Administrators, and both my Standard User and Administrator account have all privileges. I have tried changing the Owner from the Administrator account to the Standard User Account and back again with no effect.
When I am logged in as the user with Administrative Privileges:
As I said, Outlook opens right up without the User Account dialog appearing (no password security check).
In Properties, under the Compatibility Tab, in the Privilege Level section,
Run this program as an administrator
    IS NOT CHECKED.
Does anyone know how to fix this? There must be a way to either change this in Policies or while logged in as Administrator. The box in the Standard User account needs to be "un-grayed" so that it can be unchecked.

  • Need a password to open pdf

I downloaded Reader X on my Windows XP and now when I open PDF files Reader is asking for a password. I've tried all known passwords I've used on Adobe and nothing works. Talked to an Adobe tech and he doesn't know why it's asking for a password to open file. Adobe never asked for a password before to open pdf files. Help

What is the exact message you get?
I've never heard of it asking for a password either unless one is required for the actual PDF itself.

  • Acrobat 9 fails to open with single click.

    facts:
Bridge created: the pdf that fails is PDF 9, PDF Producer: PDF Library 9.0, PDF version 1.6, 448 kb, [a single page thumbnail creation by Adobe bridge] opens with acrobat 9.0, application = empty
windows Access created: pdf that works with single click: size = 13.1 mbytes, PDF producer = distiller 9. [created inside windows office access 2000], pdf version = 1.5, application = acrobat pdf maker 9.0 for access.
    Now for the annoying parts
move both PDFs to their own folders. single click both, the one created by access opens. the one created by bridge doesn't, Buuutt it does stick an adobe pdf in the task manager showing adobe pdf IS open because of the mouse click, but it doesn't open the file, kill the adobe task. Also this one created by bridge, I insert the image into access, and access opens it just fine to my annoyance. I have to immediately close it in acrobat to do anything with the access page I've just imported the image into.
create shortcuts on the desktop, and they both open from the shortcuts with a single click.
Oh yeah the bridge one opens if I right click, and choose to open with acrobat 9 at the very top of the right click menu.
What's going on here ? And how do I get the bridge file to open with a single click and not making it a shortcut ?

I received the same error today. It's been working for weeks. At the moment I am working on Windows 8 Consumer Preview with Office 2013 installed on an x64 platform, however that hasn't bothered it since it was installed. However, today I received an Adobe Update, I don't even remember what products were being updated, the update screen popped up, downloaded, installed, the progress bar got to 100% and said 2 seconds remaining and then the module crashed. The cloud activation hasn't worked since. I first get a message that says "We are unable to activate CS6 Creative Cloud Membership Subscription Edition", below that it says, "Product Activation is required to use this product" and below that it says "You must have an active internet connection to activate this product. Please check your connection settings and choose try again." When you click on Try Again, it sends up a new message box that says "Activation Failure". Needless to say I have an active connection. Even though it always worked before, I added Adobe Application Manager to the Windows 8 firewall exceptions list, still no dice. I've rebooted the computer twice.
Update: Turned out this followed another defect identified earlier. It is peculiar to Acrobat X. If you open a different application in the suite, login if asked, then close the application, Acrobat will function again normally.
