Acrobat SDK License Agreement Question

The following is a section of the latest Acrobat SDK License Agreement from the Adobe website:
"3.2  Development Restrictions.  You agree that You will not Use the Software to create, develop or use any program, software or service which . . . (b) can both (i) communicate with Adobe Reader Products and (ii) modify or save a PDF (Portable Document Format) document (including saving any modifications to a separate file for such documents);"
Does this mean that I am NOT allowed to develop a program that both:
Interfaces with Adobe Reader/Acrobat via the Acrobat SDK for PDF viewing purposes and
Builds and modifies PDF's using third party component(s)?
If the answer to the previous question is "YES", that means I can only use the Acrobat SDK in a program that is limited to PDF viewing and printing as far as PDF issues are concerned.  That would be very restrictive for a real world application that involves PDF's, especially when I am supposed to "add significant and primary functionality" as the license aggreement also states.

How do I go about contacting "Adobe Legal"?
Also, just to clarify our discussion on some subtle but important points . . .
I understand that Adobe Reader is just that, a read-only application.  And, I understand that the Adobe solution for modifying PDF's is Adobe Acrobat.  I have components from 3rd parties that let me programatically modify PDF's.  So, from a strictly programming tools point of view, I don't need Acrobat to modify PDF's in my application.  The 3rd party components handle the PDF modification tasks.  I'm not trying to use the Acrobat SDK to modify PDF's, but rather only to view PDF's.
So, when you say:
"You can NOT use Reader to view PDF documents as part of a software solution that also modifies the PDF using some other technology"
Do you mean:
It is your understanding that using the Acrobat SDK for PDF viewing and 3rd party components for PDF modification in the same application constitutes a violation of the Acrobat SDK License Agreement?
And when you say:
"Acrobat, however, does not have this limitation"
Do you mean:
Adobe requires licensed Acrobat to be used for PDF modification in any application that uses Acrobat SDK for PDF viewing?  (In other words, PDF modification is where Adobe wants to make a profit.)
Thanks for your input.

  • Reader/Acrobat SDK Licensing Query

I am developing an application in C# and this application will display the PDF document on a form. I have 3 questions as follows.
Question one : I am currently using the axAcroPDF which is exposed in the free Acrobat Reader. Now, if I deploy my application to my client, do I have to have them purchase any license from Adobe for the Reader or for using the Reader .NET classes?
Question two: Since the Reader SDK is quite limited, I am thinking of using some of the Acrobat SDK classes in my application. In this case, how does the license works - do I have my client by an Adobe Acrobat Std or Pro for each PC where my application runs? Does this mean that each copy of Acrobat comes with 1 license for SDK, or can I buy 1 Acrobat and separate licenses for the SDK, or can I just buy the SDK separately.
Question three : Is the PDF Library SDK license also tied to Acrobat Std or Pro?
Kindly enlighten on this because I called my local retailers and they are not sure about this also. And I tried to look into the forums and I do get a vague idea but want your confirmation before I inform my client on what to buy.
    Thank you.

Hello, I have managed to find a relevant posting which answers my questions by Patrick Leckey.
    Link is http://forums.adobe.com/message/1908336#1908336
In short, for using Acrobat Reader API in your applications there is no license to buy. But to use the Acrobat SDK, need to buy the Acrobat Std or Pro depending on which API calls the developer is using. And for PDL Library SDK, have to work with a partner of Adobe for licensing.
I have spent several days reading the EULAS and searching the NET and even talking to people, but could not get a clear answer, but this link cleared it all up. This is the first time I am working with Acrobat for development, as other softwares license their SDK separately, unlike Adobe. So this is something new for me.
Thanks to Patrick Leckey for his excellent answer!
    Cheers!

  • Acrobat SDK Licensing and Server Deployment

    Hello,
I have a couple of questions regarding deploying a .NET Web Application that uses the Acrobat SDK (only for PDF merging).  Currently, I have a license for Adobe Acrobat (which gave me access to the SDK to develop the merging).  For other developers to work on the same project, they will also each need their own Acrobat license in order to develop with me, correct?
I've completed this project (again, a .NET Web app) and it will be hosted on a web server as part of a larger website.  The application generates some PDF reports and will merge the documents together into 1 PDF.  The process will be run on the web server when a user clicks a button to generate the reports.
My question is, on the web server, what type of license is needed?  Is there a redistributable that can be installed on the web server for the AcroExch.PDDoc COM object (and everything else) or do we just need to purchase another copy of Adobe Acrobat and install that on the server?
If any of this isn't clear, please let me know.
    Thanks!

Well, read through a bunch of docs and I believe I may know the answer to my question.  It looks like the PDF Library is what I would need to use in order to create applications that I can then deploy to other users or in my case, a server.
The question I still have is, is it still valid to just install the Acrobat SDK on the server (I have an extra license)?  Would it still work (since I'm not using any of the specific PDF Library functionality that Acrobat doesn't have)?
    Thanks!

  • Acrobat launches, license agreement appears, I accept, Acrobat opens, Acrobat closes

There was a update of all Adobe products this week. The update went smoothly. When I try to open a PDF document, Acrobat 10 Pro, an Adobe software license agreement box opens, I accept, the box disappears, Acrobat closes immediatly. It won't stay open.
I need this program. What can I do?
    Wndows 7 Premium.
Everything worked just fine before, the problem with the 30-day close had been fixed and now this. This is getting tedious. I have the Creative Design Suite and the Creative Production Suite. Acrobat is associated with the Design Suite.
    Something must be done.
    Please advise.

Have done so through Photoshop and found the EULA.exe within the files for Adobe Reader and ran and accepted it through both those options.
The issue persists but only on Adobe Acrobat 10 as the other Adobe CS6 applications run without any issues. It is sods law that Acrobat is the application that is required.
I have accepted the EULA in the above ways as the primary user and an administrator account.
Thank you for the assistance Michael, any other potential ideas would be appreciated as I cannot think of anything else I can do.

  • Adobe Acrobat X - License agreement won't be accepted

I have Adobe Acrobat X and everytime I open the application it asks me to accept the license agreement. Regardless of what I click the application closes and reopens itself asking me to once again accept the license agreement. This loops indefinitely until I close the program in Task manager.
How can I resolve this and use the software?
    Extra details:
    OS = Windows 7 64bit
    Product = Adobe Acrobat X
It is a legit copy of the software with the license key used. Furthermore a complete uninstall and reinstall of the software has already been done but the issue persists.

  • Creative Cloud license agreement question.

This is very interesting for me to use whole CS6 only for 50$/Mo. But it's a bit complicated.
Technically I am a citizen of Russia, but most of the year I live in USA or Thailand. And more importantly, I have an American bank cards.
So, my question is: Can I use my American bank card to purchase Creative Clouds subscription and don't violate agreement?
    Thanks for answers.

    Hey EnotBert,
The issue is not that you have the US Bank card but it is that the Software needs to be Deployed in US only. ULA (User License Agreement.) says that if you want to Deploy the Software Locally you need to buy it Locally. Only Exception to that, if you are a CLP customer you can buy Perpetual License in US and deploy it anywhere in the world, but this does not apply for Cloud. Hope this helps and explains. Thanks Bharat.

  • Dreaded License Agreement question

I know this has probably been asked millions of times, all over the place but I just want to make 100% sure.
I downloaded Eclipse v3.3.2 which has the Crystal Reports for Eclipse version 1.0.6.v1371 plug-in.
I wish to find out about the license agreement and licence purchasing conditions.
The company I work for supplies its clients with a Property Management Software, designed by
ourselves. We now want to develop a few simple reports using Eclipse and CR4E, specific to each
client. These will be accessible via the web. Does this fall under the u201Cfreely distributed productu201D that I
keep finding on both Eclipse.org and on the SAP websites.
I have registered my Crystal Reports for Eclipse and removed the watermark, is this enough to be able
to supply our clients with reports? Do they just need to register the same way to be able to use the
    webapps developed by my company.
The u201CCrystal Report Web Projectsu201D will be held on a single server on the client site running Tomcat.
Under what conditions can these reports remain u201Cfreely distributed productsu201D and under what conditions
will a license need to be purchased. If a license is needed would my company have to purchase the
license, seeing as we are the ones developing the reports, or would our clients have to purchase the
    license for themselves?
Our clients will use the reports internally and will also use our webapp to produce invoices which will
then be posted or emailed to their clients.
I have read the BO License Agreement https://boc.sdn.sap.com/node/449, well atleast have tried to
understand it fully, point 3.6 says it can be installed on a single server which we will be doing, and then
point 4.9 says 1) its free 2) you have to pay if you want to remove the watermark, but then
https://boc.sdn.sap.com/node/431 says you just need to register to remove the watermark.
Does this breach the "free" conditions.
I have emailed BO/SAP directly but do not know how fast they are to reply as I have heard stories.
So if anyone could give me a definite answer that would be great.
Supplying some "understandable" official evidence would also help very much.
Eclipse and CR4E are such great products I would hate to miss out on using them.
    Regards
    Darren

  • License Agreement Question

I have aperture v1.5 on laptop and am getting imac. Can I install on imac with same disk that I loaded on laptop or do I need to buy a new copy of aperture for imac.

Check your actual agreement, but from memory you can transfer to the other mac with no problems, as you can have it installed on two machines (one desktop, the other portable) as long as they are not used simulaneously. The program is protected across a network anyway.

  • SDK license

After building the open source SDK one ends up with a file named "SDK license.pdf". This file getra extracted from the AIR Integration Kit. Now my question is: Your source code is released under MPL -- but that license says that one is not allowed to modify "Build Tools" like the ASC and it is also not allowed to distribute those tools.
Is this a mistake and does that license file apply only for the AIR Integration Kit or is it true that changing and distributing the compiler breaks the open source SDK license agreement?
    Best,
    Joa

Joa - Sorry for the late reply, it was the Memorial Day Holiday here in the States.  If you're building the open source Flex SDK, you shouldn't be getting this file I believe.  The file you reference is for the AIR SDK, and the open source license for the open source Flex SDK is spelled out here: http://opensource.adobe.com/wiki/display/flexsdk/Legal+Stuff.
I'm checking with the team to see if this might be a build.xml bug.

  • Acrobat 9 License: No Service Bureau

I just noticed section 4.6 of the Acrobat 9 License Agreement, which is:
"4.6 No Service Bureau. You will not use or offer the Software on a service bureau basis."
I'd be interested to hear any opinions on what this might mean. The term "service bureau basis" is not defined in the agreement or used elsewhere in the agreement. I've found a number of different definitions, so I'm unsure what to make of this.
    Thanks,
    George

I am an IP lawyer and drafting license agreements is one of my specialties.  The term "service bureau" (http://www.thefreedictionary.com/service+bureau; and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Service_bureau) was an somewhat archaic term dating back to the early days of computing (i.e., 1960's) when having the huge mainframes and software programs were so expensive that only big universities and companies could afford them.  IBM and other mainframe manufacturers offered a time-sharing arrangement to allow users access to these computers, which became the first offical service bureaus. See this quote from WikiPedia:
"Centralized hosting of business applications dates back to the 1960s. Starting in that decade, IBM and other mainframe providers conducted a service bureau business, often referred to as time-sharing or utility computing. Such services included offering computing power and database storage to banks and other large organizations from their worldwide data centers."
The term's use (or its concept anyway) has been revitilized, but the latest nomenclature is SaaS or Software as a Service.  Obviously, if the software author is the provider of the Saas, it does not care about prohibiting the service bureau because it controls the software's use.  However, if a licensee has a broad enough license to offer the use of the software to third parties (ala a service bureau), the licensee can undercut the software author's ability to receive license fees from the ultimate end users.  Hence, most license agreements expressly prohibit licensees from operating a service bureau using the licensed software.

  • Using the SDK in a C# program with Acrobat Standard (License question)

    Hi,
we have purchased Adobe Acrobat Standard and installed it on a Computer to edit pdf documents.
Basically, we delete some pages at the end of document as they contain superfluos information.
As there is a naming convention in these files that tells us how many pages have to be deleted, we want to use the Acrobat SDK to delete the pages automatically.
Is that ok or would we need to purchase a special license for the Acrobat SDK?
    Cheers,
    Helmut

As long as the computer is only performing the task for a single individual (since you only have a single copy) - that’s fine.  It cannot, however, perform this operation for multiple people.

  • Licensing and Deployment of Acrobat SDK

I am new to Adobe and have a question regarding licensing of Acrobat X PRO and Acrobat SDK. I would like to create a distributable form with
Acrobat X Pro and setup for users to complete the fillable Form with Acrobat reader and the completed form details will be submitted to a
network folder (FDF). I then want to programatically pickup the submitted form details, possibly using the FDF toolkit to parse the details,
and then programatically fill the form using the acrobat SDK.  A desktop copy of Acrobat X PRO and Acrobat X SDK will be deployed on a
workstation on my network. The forms will be filled in with Acrobat reader on other workstations on the same network and on external
workstations with access to the network folder used for submitting the completed forms.  Would this contravene any licensing restrictions?

You only license the product--not the use of the forms. You should fill out a distribution agreement if you distribute Reader to end users.

  • Adobe Acrobat 9 Pro - License Agreement ACCEPT does not work

Today I purchased a license for Adobe Acrobat 9 Pro, downloaded the software and installed. I execute the program and when I get to License Agreement I select accept and nothing happens. I can't get beyond this point.
I called Adobe Tech Support and they weren't able to help. I've seen many posts about this and no definite answer.
Before requesting a refund, does anybody know how to fix this problem?
I installed on Windows 7 Pro.
    Thank you,

I know this is an old posting, but for those like me who couldn't find the answer:
Had the exact same problem and  tried all the previous tips to resolve, including registering the  jscript.dll.
Thanks to the genius who posted the answer on another  'windows' forum (wish I could find that again).
Create a new  local admin account (add that account to the administrator  group).
Login to the new account and launch Acrobat. Then  (hopefully) you can click "Accept" to the license agreement.
The  registry key it creates is: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Adobe\Adobe  Acrobat\9.0\AdobeViewer\EULAAcceptedForBrowser (DWORD=0x00000001). Not  sure if you can just manually add the registry value as I had already  fixed it by creating the new local account.
After it accepts the  license agreement, you can go back into your normal profile and run  acrobat. yea!.

  • Acrobat Pro XI problem+Accept End User License Agreement when opening a PDF inside IE

Hi folks, this issue has been challenging.
    Acrobat Pro CC install
    W7 X64
Deployment went ok after the code was worked out, but.....
We use Desire to Learn content management system at the community college where I maintain the student computers at. When running D2L and a PDF has been embedded in some course material, I am getting the message below and the PDF won't open.
“Before proceeding you must first launch Adobe Acrobat and accept the End User License Agreement" .
The only fix so far is to run up Acrobat Pro and run the program once. Fine and dandy, but we are looking at 700+ machines to clear in this fashion. The other part of this scenario we we also utilize Respondus Lockdown Browser to invigilate exams through D2L. Because of the "lock down" features, the student can't even get back to the desktop to run Acrobat and clear the message.
I have tried a number of GPO entries to no avail. As well, disabled the IE PDF viewer add-on. I ran Procmon with no results either; .
I have been scouring the Googlemachine and building on the GPO below to get around the issue with no results. I am hoping someone with a sharper eye than I can spot something or point me in the correct direction..
    Thanks eh.
