Acrobat V9.0 PDF and Reader V5.0 Compatibility

Hi - I'm having trouble with an Acrobat V9.0 PDF. The file was generated on the PC with WinXP using Acrobat V9.0 Standard Edition.
I also have access to an OS9.2 Mac which we use to run Adobe Framemaker. The Mac has Acrobat, Distiller and Reader V5.0.
Am finding that Acrobat or Reader V5.0 won't display V9.0 PDF's, coming up with a read error. I always thought that PDF was portable (Portable Document Format??).
Has the strive forward with versions now made this portabilty a thing of the past and now version dependant.
As a test we distilled a PDF using Acrobat V8.0 and this was display'd fine.
It seems to be an issue with the new realease.

Adobe neither supports nor recommends that combination. Most known problems don't relate to creating pdfs, but usually with viewing pdf files.  However, if you remove Reader 9.1 you will break Acrobat 6. I'd recommend you uninstall both and re-install 6 (unless you want to upgrade to version 9). Be aware the Acrobat 9 is the last version of Acrobat you can purchase as an upgrade from Acrobat 6. When the next version comes out you'll have to pay full fare.

  • Acrobat 7.0.9 and Reader 9 - Issues opening PDF in IE6

I'm hoping someone can help.  All our users have Reader 9 installed as part of the corporate image.  Some of our users run Acrobat 7.0.9 as well.  For those users, we are experiencing issues where when we try to open a PDF in IE6.  We get the following error:
SW:iexplore.exe_application error - The instruction at "0x052f51b6" referenced memory at "0x00000010".  The memory could not be "read".
I've opened Acrobat 7.0.9 and checked Edit, Preference, Internet.  The option to untick "Display PDF in browser" is greyed out.
I've opened IE6 and gone to Tools, Manage Add-Ons and there is nothing listed for "Acrobat Control for ActiveX (pdf.ocx)" listed.
I've tried uninstalling Acrobat and reinstalling.  I've then also tried running a repair on both Reader and Acrobat, but nothing seem to be fixing the issue.  This has only started happening since we upgraded Reader to 9 in our image.
Any advice on how to fix the issue would be greatly appreciated.

  • Acrobat std. 6, and reader 9 conflicts HELP!!

    Hello,
I have a client who has both acrobat standard 6.0 and acrobat reader 9.0 on his machine.
he needs both as the standard was set up for printing to networked printer in his office, by the printer's sales team.
he has no problem when opening .pdf files that are local. the problem happens when he tries to open a pdf web page or should i say a web page with a pdf file embedded in it. the computer wants to revert to acrobat standard and not use 9.0 to open the file.
i can not find a solution to this problem. i have looked in control panel/folder options/file types and have changed a few things, but to no avail.
any help with this would be greatly appreciated.
    thank you.
    paul

Unfortunately you have found one of the many reasons why having both on the same machine is neither recommended nor supported. It looks like you have tried most everything there is to try.
The only other thing I can suggest is to go in to Task Manager and be sure that Standard is completely shut down before trying to open a PDF through the web browser. Of course that will be a pain to do every time...

  • Same doc, acrobat show item description and reader doesn't - any idea?

I have a few documents that when opened with adobe acrobat it shows all information, but adobe reader don't show the items descriptions.
it can be opened with any acrobat version and it's viewable, not with the reader.

please, any help will be greatly appreciated.

What do you mean by "item description", exactly?

  • Embedding XML data file into PDF, and reading from it?

    Hello guys,
Sorry, I'm new to here and new to the Acrobat and its scripting. So, maybe my questions will be a bit stupid, but please help. Thanks.
So, here what I would like to do. I would like to make a class enrollment form for people, so that they can use it to apply for any class(es) they find interests at my centre.
The old way to do it, is to send them a MS Word file, or a print-out, and they fill in whatever they like. The nightmare starts here, since there is no checking on Word, nor cannot control what people could fill in on their paper. People starts filling in whatever they like, e.g. class number that doesn't match the class name, and that class name doesn't belong to that time slot. And they even miss a digit of their phone number!
I'm looking for a solution with Acrobat/PDF. And the picture I have in my mind is, to give people my enrollment form in PDF. And would like to embedded the class data (maybe in XML) in that same PDF, so that people won't loose a file and break the whole thing. And the PDF can use that class data to check if people have entre a class that's exist, and choose a date that's available...
Anyone have or know any good tutorial for that? and on the scripting to do that? Any hints does help. Thanks
(By the way I'm using Acrobat 8 and a LifeCycle the come with the installation.... )
I know it is alot to ask, but please kindly help, Thanks :)

Once you open the file, you can't access it again until the original reference is closed. You might want to look at a functional global architecture. You use a case structure to determine how to access the data. Initialize, write, read, save are common examples of sections inside the functional global.

  • Acrobat 6.0 Pro and reader 9.1

I have both the free Reader 9.1 and Acrobat 6.0 Pro installed on my computer. Is this going to create problems for me, such as being able to read or create files? I attempted an update earlier today and my computer locked up, so I'm figuring I may have a conflict having both programs on the computer. I am running XP. Thanks in advance for any assistance. Sue

  • Coexistance of Acrobat 6.0 professional and Reader 7.0

    Hi,
I have acrobat professional 6.0 installed on my computer. Later I installed acrobat reader 7.0 with the latest updates. Now I cannot open a PDF file for editing. Even if I open it using Open with, I always get Acrobat reader 7.0 and not the 6.0 professional.
Are there ant setting required for this to work?

  • Can't sign Acrobat Pro 6 PDF with Reader 8

I have many documents created with Acrobat Pro 6. Some have signature fields (forms). My manager has Reader 8. When she opens the documents, the "sign" capability is not available. She clicks in the signature fields and nothing happens.
From the File->Properties view, Security tab, Reader 8 shows "Signing: Not Allowed". From the same view in Pro 6, I see "Signing: Allowed".
Is there something (short of buying Pro 8 ) I can do to my PDFs so my manager can sign them using Reader 8?
Windows XP, Acrobat Pro 6, Acrobat Reader 8

With Adobe LiveCycle Reader Extensions ES software, you can activate functionality within Adobe Reader (version 7 and above), enabling end users to save, fill in, annotate, sign, and submit PDF documents and forms:

  • Use Acrobat for computer files and Reader for IE files

How can I set up a computer so that most of the PDFs get opened in Acrobat, but if you click on a PDF online, it opens in Reader?
    Thanks.

The main problem with Reader and Acrobat is that they tend to leave part resident. That means that once you start reader, the next time you try acrobat you will get reader instead. You then have to go to the task list and disable the resident part of Reader. There seems to be no choice that you can make to say not to put part resident. At least that is my understanding of the issue. Maybe others can help some.
I think you may have to play around a bit to determine the proper manner to use both programs.

  • Advanced Index Search Crashes Acrobat Pro and Reader

I have a problem of which I've not been able to find a similar past experience. Acrobat Pro 9.5 and Reader X both crash on a Windows 7 PC whenever I initiate a search using our Adobe-created index files. These index files work for every other computer on our Network and all relevant users have the same permissions to access the indexes. I've trashed the preferences folder and even uninstalled and reinstalled both programs. The functions are not relegated to a particular user on the machine as the problem is the same across the board, so I've narrowed the problem down to being on the PC itself. I've not seen this as a known issue anywhere nor seen people write about this as a past issue. Any and all help appreciated, and thanks in advance!

    Bump. Y'know, for kids.

  • Saving PDF for reading offline...

OK I read a LOT of PDFs in my life. I thought the intelligent way would be to read them on the "magical iPad".
When I try to save a PDF and read it there seems to be no 'love'. It's hard to get subjects such as "gdb internals" in ebooks via Apple..
    Any ideas?

Have you looked at "GoodReader" for the iPad? It's only 99¢ and it's rock solid. I've been using it on my iPod Touch for many months and it was the 1st app I downloaded for my iPad.

  • Wiki in pdf (and other format) , please

    Yes, i'm new to archlinux.
But it's been a month that i installed "overlord" on my laptop and then on my PC.
i found that the wiki is very helpful but i prefer to read it in pdf so i copy those selected pages and paste to OpenOffice, convert it to pdf and read them via pdf viewer on another computer(i did it while installing arch on my laptop and do the opposite while installing on that PC).
Recently, i just know that there are some apps that can convert html page to pdf or else like "htmldoc" but it's not friendly enough for me though.
And i might miss something else beside htmldoc but it could be a time cunsuming task to convert those things.
So, is it possible for arch team to convert all topics to pdf that anyone can download them very easily and without any extra experience or effort?
I know, the wiki is alwals dynamic and it's a hard work and boring to do such things but i think this could be a great help for everyone(especially who loves reading pdf docs).I got this idea when i was searching some infos in Gentoo and FreeBSD's official sites that i could choose lots of format to download any docs and they're very informative and polished though some of them are obsolete or outdated. Yeah, the arch's pdf docs should be in the similar way or better.
If there's a better way to convert every single page to pdf, please tell me.
For now i've got plenty of them already, but for a very newbie it's would be nice, really.
And i think that's not easy to contribute the wiki myself while some might call me noob.
    So what's your suggestion?.

Some time ago I wrote a little script to convert wiki to txt for the CD. As I'm using texinfo it was relatively easy to modify it to create pdfs. Like this.
I can guarantee you that it will fail on some pages, but it should work well for most of them.
You can find the script here
extract both files into one dir and then run
    python wiki2pdf.py WIKIPAGETITLE
    Caveat: This requires LaTeX

  • I am using CC adobe Acrobat to combine multiple pdfs and add page numbers. Mac users can no longer read the page numbers but pc users can.

I am using CC adobe Acrobat to combine multiple pdfs and add page numbers. As of about 2 weeks ago the mac users can no longer read the page numbers they get a font error message and see only -- where the page information should be. The pc users do not have this same problem. When I replace our regular font (URW Grotesk) with a system font (Verdana) everyone is able to read the page numbers. This is a new issues, I have been creating these documents in the same way for years without a problem. I have been on hold and on and off calls for the last two hours, I keep getting hung up on once I find someone in adobe support to talk to!

    Hi KnoopL,
Are the Mac users using Preview to view the pdfs or Adobe Reader?

  • Acrobat 6 and Reader 9 - Can't open PDF on web

    Hi,
On my work machine, I have Acrobat 6 installed so I can create PDFs (I hope to get authorized for Acrobat 8 soon). When trying to view/open a PDF on a website, I was getting the following message:
"The Adobe Acrobat/Reader that is running cannot be used to view PDF files in a Web Browser. Adobe Acrobat/Reader version 8 or 9 is required."
    And the PDF won't open.
I downloaded Reader 9, and updated both Acrobat 6 and Reader 9 with all updates.
In Preferences, I have played with enabeling/disabeling the "Display PDF in browser" on both Arobat and Reader with no luck.
Are there any other settings I need to change to be able to open PDFs?
    Many thanks!

I'm having a similar problem and am totally frustrated.
I have an old version of acrobat reader 5, but today I downloaded reader 9, but when I click on .pdf files online, I get the same message saying that I need reader 8 or 9 to open files on the web.... which I have!
I went in, after reading this thread, and made sure my 5 had the "display PDF in browser" UNCHECKED, and that it WAS checked in 9... but still no dice. For a few years now I've been unable to just click on and open pdf files online, and have been going a long route around by right clicking pdf's, clicking on "save target as", saving the files to my desktop, then opening reader 5 and going to file, open, and opening the file. What a huge pain in the butt though... all I want to do is be able to click pdf files and open them in my browser!!
Oh, and another bizarre thing that has happened is that since installing reader 9, all the icons on every pdf file on my computer has changed to the icon windows uses for files of an unknown type. Can't figure out why since when I double click any of these files, they open right up in reader 9.
I'm beyond irritated with trying to figure this out, so I'm open to any suggestions anyone has!
