Acrobat X and Encrypted PDFs

Hello -
We have Acrobat X (10.0.3) Pro (the version you can create PDFs with) and are having trouble with at least one machine.
There is an encrypted PDF that will cause Acrobat to give an error.  (encrypted meaning, cannot edit/change the document)
There is no password to open and use it.
When opening the document we get:
Adobe Acrobat has stopped working
A problem caused the pgoram to stop working correctly.  Please close the program.
Other PDF's work, if you open a PDF and go to Tools (upper right) then Protection and Encrypt.  All the options are grayed out.  Is there a way to "install" encryption options?
I have removed Acrobat X, rebooted, reinstalled, reboot.  Still isn't working.  On machines that can open this document, then do have Encryption options.
Thanks, Nick

Anyone have a thought on this, as to what's missing causing Acrobat X to not work with Encrypted PDF's? or be able to encrypt any of it's own?

  • Acrobat 8 and 9 PDF maker

    Hello all,
We have noticed some differences between results from each version of PDF maker. I cant figure out if its just the way it should work or its something you can change in the wide range of settings
PDF maker Acrobat 8 (from a WORD file) : Most transparancies will come out ok, but still some will go wrong. Bookmarks will be included
PDF maker Acrobat 9 (from a WORD file) : Nearly all transparancies will come out good, but the big reason is that now almost all illustrations will be a single compressed image instead of a sharp vectored one. Also the bookmarks from (for example) the index will be lost in the PDF file.
    So my biggest questions are:
Why in Acrobat 9 are images compressed and flattened instead of vectored?
Why wont the bookmarks be included?
We are quite experienced with the software here but up untill now we are not able to figure this out.
If anyone has some inside on this please share!
    Regards,
    Martijn

I had the slow scrolling problem, too. Just occurred out the blue on December 15, 2010. Here's the simplest solution:
    http://help.adobe.com/en_US/Acrobat/9.0/Standard/WS58a04a822e3e50102bd615109794195ff-7d1b. w.html
This link deals with the auto scrolling function under "View" at the top of your Adobe Reader page. Basically, with your Adobe document open and watching "auto scrolling" (i.e. your pages scrolling very slowly), hit a number (1-9) to adjust the speed of scrolling. I picked 5.
Then, go to "View" again and select "Auto Scrolling" to turn off this function.
Now, re-open your Adobe Reader document (if closed) and you should be able to scroll at a "normal" and not slow pace.
Hope I'm right with this one.
    Happy Holidays.

  • Computer does not recognise Adobe Acrobat/Distiller and cannot Pdf

    Hi,
I recently installed a new version of Adobe creative suite 4, just as an unregistered trial, but I found that my computer could not handle the programs, and began to crash any time I attempted to create a pdf.
So I uninstalled just the Acrobat part of the package, hoping that I would still be able to use my old Adobe 5 to Pdf from Autodesk CAD.
However now that I have uninstalled, I still cannot Pdf. And moreover, my computer no longer automatically recognises Adobe 5 as the default program for opening Pdf's, it makes me select the program from a list.
Is there any way to fix this? Would uninstalling and reinstalling help? Pdfing from CAD is essential to my work.
Any help would be gratly appreciated!!

The simplest way is to just do a repair (Control Panel>Add Remove Programs ...). For AA5, it will likely show up at change and remove. Select the change and you should be able to fix things. If that does not work, then uninstall, remove the Acrobat 5 folder, and use the MS Cleanup Tool. Then reboot and install. Acrobat and Reader are such that if you install more than one version, uninstalling any will most likely break all others -- exactly your problem. The association problem can be fixed with Windows explorer, but other things may also be broken that make a repair or reinstall a good idea.

  • Work with ListBox in Acrobat Reader and 3D Pdf

I have a template with LiveCycle Designer 8.2. This listbox i fill dynamically with JavaScript in the 3D Model and in the template. I can manipulate both scripts. The user should select items in that view. So i have choosen User Entered - Optional as type in Designer. This all works.
But if the user selects one item in Adobe Reader the Listbox gets the focus. Selects the user now an other element in the 3D Model, the values from Listbox will changing. But the Listbox already has the focus and nothing is changed. If i click manual in another field except the 3D Model, the Listbox looses focus and the new values are visible.
How can i fix that problem?
In LiveCycle Designer the property Comit On: Select is disabled always. Also execEvent("Click") on another field does not work, even in a timer function.
The user should only select values in my list and scroll if necessary.
    Thanks for all hints.

Don't use the regular "'submit by email button." If you use this button, you can only submit the data as XML. Instead, make your own button.
In the Object library under Standard objects, click and drag a plain button to your form. Change the Control Type to Submit. Now you should have a new tab called Submit with a "submit to URL" option.  In that field type the return email address in the following format:  mailto:[email protected]  Toward the bottom of the same option, there is a field that says "submit" and the choice is XML data package.  Change that to PDF.  Then change the name of the button to "Submit by Email."  Now when you preview your form and click the Submit by Email button, it should mail the completed form as a PDF instead of simply mailing the raw data.

  • Issue while Signing and Encrypting the PDF Document.

    Hello,
I am developing one component in VC++(MFC) which signs and encrypts the pdf documents.
When i sign and encrypt pdf document using my component, I am getting following error while opening the document in Adobe Acrobat
    Error during signature verification
Unexpected byte range values defining scope of signed data.
Details: The signature byte range is invalid
But if i open that document in binary mode and calculate the byte range its looking correct.
The Process for signing and encrypting the PDF document is as follows :
1)Prepare the PDF document for signing (Add Annotation objects,n0,n2
layers, create blank signature field, new xref section etc.)
2)Encrypt the whole document(Password based encryption).
    3)Put the ByteRange values.
4)Write the signature in blank signature field.
If i just perform encryption(128 bit RC4 Algorithm) on the pdf document its working fine.Only after adding the signature objects i am getting above error.I think it means something is wrong in signature related objects, but i am not able to recognize the exact problem.
So what can be the issue?
    Please Help
    Thanks in Advance

  • Read-only AND Encrypted

I am using Acrobat XI Pro: is there a way to make a file read-only AND encrypted?

    Folks,
I may have found a way to create a pdf document with Acrobat XI Pro that is read-only AND encrypted. Please let me know if I have indeed succeeded or not, thank you!
The steps that I follow to create the read-only AND encrypted pdf document are as follows:
Create a plain pdf document, from MS Word for example
    Sanitize Document
    Create Form without fields
    Close Form Editing
    Encrypt with Password
    Save
Save As Other… => Reader Extended PDF... => Enable More Tools (includes form fill-in & save)…
I as a not-very-sophisticated-computer-user did not find a way to hack difficult to detect changes - such as the insertion or deletion of the word 'not' - into the resulting pdf document. But again, please let me know if you DO find a way to hack the resulting pdf document, thank you!
P.S. I think the resulting pdf document is essentially an encrypted form, albeit one without fields.

  • Is it possible with Adobe Acrobat to create a PDF that has multiple usernames/passwors for read access and individualised watermarks or with any other adobe product?

    Hi,
We're looking for a solution where a PDF can be created and distributed to multiple people - each with their own username/password to open - and also when opened created a user based water mark on the document. Is this something that can be done inside Acrobat Pro or is there a higher end product that does this?
    Thanks!

If the list of people who and only who you want to be able to open this PDF is predefined, then you can use Certificate Encryption in Acrobat. For this method to work each of possible recipients of the encrypted PDF needs to procure a digital certificate with a private key enabled for encryption and send you the public key version of this certificate. Then you encrypt this PDF with public key certificates (there may be many of them) of all recipients you want to be able to open this PDF. Then you distribute this PDF to all recipients and each of them can then open this PDF with their private key certificates.
You can also create PDFs with Optional Content which contains different watermarks with the selector for a watermark based on user ID or some other identification of the user. I do not know, though how to create such Optional Content using just Acrobat Pro. You may need to write a plugin to Acrobat to do that.

  • How to change the font and size in the fillable field of an encrypted PDF file?

    hi!
I’d like to change the font and size in the fillable field of an encrypted PDF file I-485 from www.uscis.gov/files/form/i-485.pdf
I’m using Adobe Acrobat Pro 9 in Windows XP. I firstly tried Adobe LiveCycle Designer, but the I-485 file requires password to be opened, which I don’t know.
Then I tried to print it to a PDF file, and use the Typewriter tool to fill in the form. But got error message while printing it to PDF file:
This PostScript file was created from an encrypted PDF file.
Redistilling encrypted PDF is not permitted.
The I-485 file can be exported to unencrypted postscript file, but got the same error message while trying to open the ps file.
I don’t know much about pdf file, can anyone please help?
    Thanks a lot!

Ask the creator of the file for a unprotected version.

  • Trouble opening LiveCycle DRM-encrypted PDFs in Adobe Acrobat v.10.0.2

LiveCycle DRM-encrypted PDFs open fine in Adobe Acrobat v. 9, v. 10.1.7, and v. 11. Why don't they open in v. 10.0.2? Is this a known problem? My company is UNABLE to upgrade or downgrade to another version of Adobe at this time, but we need to be able to open these PDFs with version 10.0.2. What is the solution? I get the following message when attempting to open these PDFs:

And, if there is a bug, is there any solution other than to upgrade to the next version?
Usually bugs are fixed in updated software versions; what kind of other solution do you expect?
Actually, looking at ftp://ftp.adobe.com/pub/adobe/reader/win/10.x/ I see that 10.0.2 has been removed completely, so this appears to have been an especially buggy version.

  • Unable to save a copy of encrypted pdf with Acrobat Pro 10.0

I create an encrypted pdf using prince a tool to convert HTML documents to pdf. I am unable to save a copy of the pdf file when i use Acrobat Pro 10.0.
    It displays the following error
"The document could not be saved. There was a problem reading this document(21)."
However Acrobat Reader (basic) allows me to do so.
I am also able to save a copy of the document with Acrobat pro 7. I raised this issue with Prince and they told me that it could probably be a bug/unwanted behaviour with Acrobat Pro 10.0

  • Password protecting and encrypting received pdf file

    Hello there,
how can I password protect (and encrypt) a pdf file that I received from someone else? For example, I may get a copy of my tax return from my accountant that I don't want anyone else to see on my computer or when I back up contents of my computer online.
I have only Adobe Reader 8 installed on my computer. So I am not writing these pdf files myself - I realize that then I would have full control over the security settings.
Microsoft Word and Excel files I can password protect. How can I do this for "received pdf files"?
    Thank you for your help.

    You need Acrobat, not Reader.
Be aware that even then, PDF security is easy to bypass.
I use a Mac for the most part but isn't there any features in Windows that will allow you to protect folders?

  • Looking for "PDF Public-Key Digital Signature and Encryption Specification"

    Hi,
i am looking for the following ("old") document:
PDF Public-Key Digital Signature and Encryption Specification
Originally i could be found here:
    http://partners.adobe.com/asn/developer/acrosdk/DOCS/ppk_pdfspec.pdf
But not anymore. Does somebody of you still have it? Adobe today just offers the latest documents but i specifically need that older version.
Or is there an archive i don't know of?
    Thanks for your help,
    ToM

You can read the PDF 1.5 specification OR even ISO 32000-1 itself for that information. Each feature is "tagged" with the specific version in which it was introduced.
Digital Signatures were first introduced in Acrobat 4 (PDF 1.3) and have seen various improvements which each version since.

  • Acrobat DC, encryption, PDF forms

Can someone who has a paid subscription to Acrobat DC fill out a PDF form that has password protection?
Can they edit a PDF that does not have password protection?

    George,
Just to make sure I understand --
Never in previous versions was it possible to fill out an encrypted PDF form on a mobile device.
I read Adobe's FAQs for Acrobat DC at FAQ | Acrobat DC mobile app. It does not say that it is possible to fill out an encrypted PDF on a mobile device.
Is it truly -- finally -- possible to fill out an encrypted PDF form on a mobile device using the subscription version?
More importantly for most form developers and form users -- is it possible to fill out an encrypted PDF form on a mobile device using the FREE version? (Now THAT would be useful!)
