Acrobat X and Reader X coexistence

Hi,
From reading the forum posts, it appears Acrobat X and Reader X installations can co-exist in Windows. However, it has yet to appear on the matrix doc:
http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/333/333223.html
What particular reasons would one need to keep Reader X installed, when users are licensed for Acrobat X ? Thank you.

Yes they can happily coexist. Until recently it was useful as only Reader had Protected Mode, but now Acrobat has it too, the primary reason to coinstall is to test your end user's views of forms, etc.

  • Acrobat Pro and Reader fighting for Safari frameworks folder...

    We manage hundreds of Macs of which most are at 10.4.8.
    We have both Acrobat Pro and Reader 7.0.8 installed on all Macs.
    Sometime within the last few weeks something has changed on our systems (eg: upgrading from something under 10.4.8 to 10.4.8) that is causing Acrobat Pro and Reader to fight for the Safari.app/Contents/Frameworks/ folder. This folder contains aliases to either Pro or Reader frameworks within that Acrobat app's own frameworks folder (...Acrobat Pro.app/Contents/Frameworks/)
    This issue is that the end user is prompted to authenticate for either Reader or Pro to "repair itself" which it is just changing the aliases within the Safari Frameworks folder to point to their own frameworks.
    If I set Preview as the default pdf viewer and then delete Acrobat Reader so that only Preview and Acrobat Pro are on the client, then it seems to work beautifully without authentication request. We would like to keep Reader on the systems though. We use Sassafras' Keyserver with a limited number of licenses for Acrobat Pro.
    Has anyone else experienced this? Found a solution, etc?
    Thanks!

    I agree with rikbarry - I finally reinstalled Acrobat, then ran the
    update to 9.4.5. The updater took nearly an hour to finish which can't
    be normal, but the software appears to be the correct version now.
    I work for a very small graphic design company and use an older emac
    that has pretty much reached its shelf life for many apps and OS.
    Could my aging computer be contributing to the problem?
    Because we depend heavily on pdf workflow, I chose to reinstall
    WITHOUT running the uninstaller first, as the 9.4.4 version was at
    least still functioning. I was somewhat surprised that it worked, and
    I am NOT looking forward to the next updater.

  • Acrobat 6 and Reader 9 - Can't open PDF on web

    Hi,
    On my work machine, I have Acrobat 6 installed so I can create PDFs (I hope to get authorized for Acrobat 8 soon). When trying to view/open a PDF on a website, I was getting the following message:
    "The Adobe Acrobat/Reader that is running cannot be used to view PDF files in a Web Browser. Adobe Acrobat/Reader version 8 or 9 is required."
    And the PDF won't open.
    I downloaded Reader 9, and updated both Acrobat 6 and Reader 9 with all updates.
    In Preferences, I have played with enabeling/disabeling the "Display PDF in browser" on both Arobat and Reader with no luck.
    Are there any other settings I need to change to be able to open PDFs?
    Many thanks!

    I'm having a similar problem and am totally frustrated.
    I have an old version of acrobat reader 5, but today I downloaded reader 9, but when I click on .pdf files online, I get the same message saying that I need reader 8 or 9 to open files on the web.... which I have!
    I went in, after reading this thread, and made sure my 5 had the "display PDF in browser" UNCHECKED, and that it WAS checked in 9... but still no dice. For a few years now I've been unable to just click on and open pdf files online, and have been going a long route around by right clicking pdf's, clicking on "save target as", saving the files to my desktop, then opening reader 5 and going to file, open, and opening the file. What a huge pain in the butt though... all I want to do is be able to click pdf files and open them in my browser!!
    Oh, and another bizarre thing that has happened is that since installing reader 9, all the icons on every pdf file on my computer has changed to the icon windows uses for files of an unknown type. Can't figure out why since when I double click any of these files, they open right up in reader 9.
    I'm beyond irritated with trying to figure this out, so I'm open to any suggestions anyone has!

  • Appending new pages to signed documents now makes Acrobat 9 and Reader 9 mark signature as invalid

    Hello!
    I have developed a service that appends additional pages to existing PDF documents. Some of the documents the service works on happen to be signed. As the service appends the pages using incremental updates, the signed contents are left untouched. This makes Acrobat 8 and Reader 8 display the signature state as "valid with subsequent changes" which is ok and no one complains about.
    Now along come Acrobat 9 and Reader 9, and all of a sudden the signature state is "invalid" which my users do complain about. Telling them that inspecting the signature state details they can see that the signed content still is untouched and the actual change is recognized to be some appended pages, doesn't help either as they in turn forward the documents to their customers who don't accept the documents if the Adobe Reader sais the signatures are invalid.
    Does anyone know a way new pages can be added to a signed document without having the new Adobe program versions choke on them?
    Even a hint that involves adding some flag to the original unsigned document or the signature itself would help as the users in question can tweak those processes. Due to the nature of the workflow, though, signing unfortunately must happen before my service can add the new pages.
    Best regards, Mikel.
    By the way, the signatures in question are regular approval signatures, nothing fancy, especially not certifying signatures (which indeed can forbid any changes or at least any changes but some form fill-ins and annotations)...

    Hi Fritz,
    In the interest of full disclosure, I got the answer to the problem from one of my distinguished colleagues, I'm just the messenger in this case.
    The problem is that the form adds some items to the Arzneispezialität / Zusatztext combobox which are there during signing but the form doesn’t remember that it did this on the next form open.
    Since this field is included in the MDP+ signature and the field has changed in the re-opened version vs. the signed version, the MDP+ signature becomes invalid.
    XFA has a feature that remembers these kinds of things for you but it is turned it OFF. Please open the attached screen shot to see the control in question.
    So, you can either (1) turn this feature ON (Automatically), or (2) write some script to clear the combobox items prior to signing or (3) write some script to repopulate the combobox items on the subsequent open to match the items that were there during signing.

  • Acrobat 7 and Reader 8 stall with latest Windows Vista Update

    After downloading and installing the most recent Windows Vista 64 bit update, neither reader or acrobat will start when I attempt to open a .pdf document. I ran 'system restore' to undue the Windows Update and all is now fine, .pdf's will now open using acrobat or reader... I believe this update is the culprit to acrobat or reader being able to start once the updates been installed: Windows Live Essentials 2011 (KB2434419) Download size: 157.3 MB Update type: Recommended

    hmmm, my version (7.0.9) of AA7 pro runs just fine on my copy of Windows 64 bit (longhorn) using the AMD 64 bit processor... Unless I install the latest windows update... Then, as already stated, both AA7 and Reader fail to start when I attempt to open an existing .pdf... MS needs to better debug the current windows update file...

  • Acrobat 5 and reader 9 installation problems???

    I work for small private non-profit school.  We have been using acrobat 5.0 for some time with much success.  We had to purchase a new computer.  I loaded the acrobat 5 and then was prompted at some point to download reader 9.  I can't print checks in quickbooks online and when I print to pdf it saves as tiff file, not pdf.  I don't know if they're not working together, if I installed improperly, or what.  I want to be able to print to pdf for all programs and convert pdf files to use in word.  What do I need to do?  I can't upgrade or purchase acrobat pro.  Thank you for your help!

    I'm running XP as well (partitioned harddrive with windows 7).  I right clicked a pdf document to "open with acrobat reader 9.3" but it didn't give me an option to open with it all the time.  This is what I want because when I go to quickbooks online it automatically opens AA5 which quickbooks doesn't support.
    If I open reader 9 before quickbooks, it still opens AA5 by default.
    My other machine has XP with acrobat 5.0 and reader 6.0 and has no problems.  What about if I delete reader 9 and download reader 6?  Do you know of any issues if I uninstall reader 9?  Are there shared files that will corrupt AA5?

  • Adobe Acrobat X and Reader XI

    Hello,
    Can Adobe Acrobat X (pro) and Reader XI installed at the same time?
    I'm asking this because I need Acrobat to create PDF files, but I want to read PDF files in the latest version of Reader.
    Won't it damage the installation of Acrobat or Reader?
    Thanks.

    It's pretty easy to assign the default program used to open a file type:
    Acrobat X Pro vs. Reader XI.  Getting Pro to open as default?

  • Acrobat Pro and Reader 9.4.4 to 9.4.5 Updates Fail

    I was unable to get a satisfying answer via phone support, and after connecting with a supervisor, I was disconnected. So here goes...
    (Mac OS X 10.6.8) Adobe Updater 6  began notifying me recently that updates were available for Adobe Reader from 9.4.4 to 9.4.5, but my attempts to follow instructions resulted in Error 1301 "The update could not be applied because the Adobe Reader application contents were modified since the original installation. Please reinstall Adobe Reader and check for updates again."

Please reinstall Acrobat Pro and check for updates again."
    When Adobe updates its software, I shouldn't have to "reinstall" old software and "check for updates again" in order to install the update. Surely Adobe can offer a more direct, convenient way for customers to update their licensed software?

  • Advanced Index Search Crashes Acrobat Pro and Reader

    I have a problem of which I've not been able to find a similar past experience. Acrobat Pro 9.5 and Reader X both crash on a Windows 7 PC whenever I initiate a search using our Adobe-created index files. These index files work for every other computer on our Network and all relevant users have the same permissions to access the indexes. I've trashed the preferences folder and even uninstalled and reinstalled both programs. The functions are not relegated to a particular user on the machine as the problem is the same across the board, so I've narrowed the problem down to being on the PC itself. I've not seen this as a known issue anywhere nor seen people write about this as a past issue. Any and all help appreciated, and thanks in advance!

    Bump. Y'know, for kids.

  • Printing problem from Adobe Acrobat 8 and Reader 9

    Hello together,
    i've got a problem while printing from Adobe Acrobat Professional 8 and Acrobat Reader 9.
    I've got the Error: /usr/libexec/cups/filter/pstoraster failed
    It happens with my new Canon ip4700 and my brother laser printer.
    I got the newest available Version of OSX and the Adobe Updates.
    The PDF files are printed in the "OSX Preview", but not in the Adobe Software
    Happy for any help or advice.
    Best,
    Lukasz

    Acrobat 8 and Reader 9 are not compatible. The only versions of Reader and Acrobat designed to be compatible with each other in Windows is Reader and Acrobat X.

  • Adobe Acrobat Pro and Reader Freeze

    Everytime I open Adobe Acrobat Pro or Reader I am unabe to open the preferences menu.  Program freezes up.  Also when I hit print the program also freezes.  I've uninstalled and reinstalled multiple times with no success.

    Which version (and sub-version)? Why do you have both Reader and Acrobat installed? Before AAX this was not a recommended combination at all.
    You should be able to delete the Reader and repair Acrobat. If you do not have the most current version of Acrobat, you should do an update(s). If you uninstall and reinstall again, before the reinstall, deleted any left over parts of the Acrobat folder and run a registry cleanup utility (the MS one if you can get it -- MS quit distributing it -- or CCleaner). Then reinstall. Typically the repair and the updates should take care of things unless you have gotten a corrupt plug-in included somehow.

  • Error in http post submit in Acrobat 8 and Reader 8

    I am having an error when using the submit button via http post in Adobe 8 and Reader 8.
    The http post is not properly formed and only submits the name of the first field and all of the values of the form. All the remaining fields names are not submitted.
    It works fine however if I use Adobe 7 or Reader 7.
    Anyone else have this error.

    I have the same problem with Reader 8. It's a bug. In http request ampersand is missing. Reaser 8 sends:
    PAR1=value_of_par1PAR2=value_of_par2PAR3=value_of_par3
    but it may be:
    PAR1=value_of_par1&PAR2=value_of_par2&PAR3=value_of_par3

  • How can I have users change textures in acrobat 3d and Reader question tia sal2

    I'm trying to have users in Acrobat reader change textures of a box which I made in acrobat 3d
    how can I do this?
    Example
    I made three textures for a box and I would like the user to have the ability to change the textures if they choose. How can I do this? Any examples?
    Can I have a user select the textures or the layers from a photoshop file in Acrobat 3d?
    Tia sal2

    Yo ratboy,
    You can do this. In order to map the images, they must be attached as a 3D resource. (There is a free plugin for this; search the forum for "Attach3DResource.api"). Once the images are attached, you can use the 3D Javascript API to map them to the meshes you desire.
    For one doc, I attached 25 images in this manner. I then used the script below to create a bunch of empty meshes, and then apply the images to said meshes.
    Hope this helps!
    //3D javascript ========================================
    //create 25 procedural meshes ======
    var leftEdge = -180;
    var horizontalOffset = leftEdge;
    var verticalOffset = 0;
    var myMesh = new Array();
    var myVector = new Array();
    for ( i=0; i<25; i++ ) { myMesh[i] = scene.createSquareMesh(64, 48, "myMesh" + i); myVector[i] = new Vector3( horizontalOffset, verticalOffset, 0 ); myMesh[i].transform.translateInPlace(myVector[i]); horizontalOffset += 74; if ( horizontalOffset > 180 )
    horizontalOffset = leftEdge;
    verticalOffset += 58;

  • Acrobat 9 and Reader XI ?

    Hi,
    we're planning to update our existing Adobe Reader 9 Installations to Version XI.
    We also have some Adobe Acrobat 9 Versions in use.
    Is it recommended to update also this version to the same version or are there no compatibility issues
    if the Reader is XI and the Writer 9 ?

    Well the default PDF viewer will probably jump to Reader if you don't specify it in the command line for the installation. Other than that there can be other MIME issues that pop up though.  Have a look here:  http://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/kb/problems-installing-removing-acrobat-reader.html

  • JavaScript in Form Acts Differently in Acrobat X and Reader X

    I have a fillable PDF form whose Submit button calls this JavaScript:
    this.mailForm(true);
    When I open this form in Acrobat X Pro and hit the submit button, a mail dialog box comes up as I would expect.
    When I open this form in Acrobat Reader X and hit the submit button, I get the error:
    Not allowed error.  Security settings prevent access to this property or method.
    Why the difference?  Note that I will have this form on my website, so I cannot expect my visitors to change their Reader setting.  How can I fix it?

    Thanks for your response.  In order to give my form what I believe to be the "according rights," I opened my form in Acrobat X Pro.
    I then did Save As - Reader Extended PDF - Enable Additional Features.
    After saving the form, the fields could be edited in Reader.  However it behaved the same way with this.mailForm(true) attached to the submit button.
    I got the error: "Not allowed error.  Security settings prevent access to this property or method."  Why?
    Note that for what it's worth, I had also earlier gone to the Acrobat X Pro menu item "Manage Trusted Identities" and selected Certicates - Edit Trust and checked all the boxes including "Embedded High Privilege JavaScript" and "Privileged System Operations."
