Acrobat X freezes on OCR during "recognizing text" step

Acrobat X standard freezes every time I try to OCR a document - it starts through the process but when it gets to the "recognizing text" stage it just freezes - wondows says program not responding.

We did test along with the end user that reported the issue, and we both saw the same performance drop with prior scanned documents and new ones. Its also the same for whether the PDFs are saved locally to the TS or a share folder on different server.
Whats really frustrating is that one Adobe phone tech agreed with me that OCR was running too slow when I had them remote into the server. That tech escalated the issue to "senior support" which never followed up with us. After days of waiting I called back and was told it was working "normally" and that the PDFs themselves were the issue. But again with the same files completing OCR 30% faster on a different server makes me want to call "bluff" on Adobe support. I'm just not sure of another way to isolate the issue.

  • Acrobat Pro always on top during batch OCR ! ;(

    Hello,
Do you know a way to change the default behaviour of Acrobat Pro 11 as it comes back always on top each time there is a new pdf file to OCR during a batch OCR process ?
This is very annoying as I have to click each time on the other window I was focusing on !
Example: I was on reading something in Firefox, then Acrobat Pro window appears - too bad! - I need then each time to click on Firefox in order to get back on what I was reading !
    Thanks in advance
    Win7 64bits Acrobat Pro 11, tools/action wizard using only : OCR and Save .

    Hi,
There are 2 resolutions for this issue:
1: Uncheck Prompt user checkbox while creating the Action:
2: Use Tools -> Text Recognition -> In Multiple Files option
    Please use either of them.
    Thanks,

  • OCR and hidden text in PDF scans of historic documents

I need to edit the hidden text behind a scanned PDF image of a document.  The image must remain as an “exact” copy of the original scanned document.
I used Acrobat Pro (versions 7 and 9) to make PDF images of old typed documents from the 1940’s.  When I open those images and run OCR in version 9, then examine the hidden (invisible) text layer behind the image, there are errors.  For example, the word “book” has been picked-up by the OCR as the word “look.”  I need to change the “l” to a “b” in order to make the PDF accurate when it is searched at a later date.
I have checked many user forums.  Most people imply that hidden text can be viewed, but NOT edited in Acrobat Pro 7 and 9.  (Hidden text can be viewed in Version 9 by selecting “Document” “Examine Document” and then clicking on the “+” symbol next to “Hidden Text,” then clicking “Show preview.”)  Some say to use Adobe Capture 3.0 to edit hidden text.  Others say to use Photoshop or Illustrator to edit hidden text (I think these folks may have been confused, because Photoshop and Illustrator would be used, logically, to edit the image ON TOP OF the hidden text).  Yet another person seemed to say that a hidden text editor was added to Acrobat 8, but was taken away in Acrobat 9.  (I can’t verify that because I don’t have version 8.)
The closest answer I was able to find involved using the Text Touch Up Tool on top of the image to edit hidden text behind it, but when you do that you are typing “blind.”  In other words, you highlight a spot on the image (top layer) where you THINK the error MIGHT be, and you type the correction without being able to see what you are typing over.  Then, you go back to the “Examine Document” procedure (described above) to see if you “hit” your mark, and if not, you redo it until you do “hit” your mark.  With the number of documents and corrections that we have, that procedure would be too labor intensive and thus a budget breaker.
If we have to buy more software, my preference would be to buy a genuine Adobe product because I have experienced problems in the past switching back and forth between Adobe products and other PDF manipulation software.
Can anyone answer any of these questions:
    (1) Is there a way in Acrobat versions 7, 8 or 9 to edit hidden text, and if so, how?
    (2) What Adobe software (other than Acrobat) will edit hidden text behind a PDF image?
    (3) Assuming no Adobe product will edit hidden text behind a PDF image, is there any non-Adobe products that will do that?
    Thank you!

    Hi,
Unless you use Acrobat 8 Pro's Formatted Text & Graphics" or Acrobat 9 Pro's ClearScan you will find that there is no
practicable means of editing the OCR "hidden text" in a PDF.
The TouchUp text tool (Advanced Editing toolbar) is reliant upon the selected text having an available system font to use during touchup. However, both Searchable Image and Searchable Image (Exact)  OCR output is of text rendering mode 3 (invisible text) that is provided from within Acrobat and not any installed system or other application installed font.
With Searchable Image (Exact) you have the untouched image augmented by the invisible text which is provided as a user aid for search or find with Adobe Reader or Acrobat. The invisible text is not intended to support word processor like editing.
    To your questions:
#1. There is no practicable way to edit invisible text (text rendering mode 3) with Acrobat (any past or current release).
    #2. None.
#3. A good question. Perhaps a specialty program. Keep in mind, many products provide a promise but those those that actually deliver tend to be expensive.
Something to play with. Using Acrobat 9 Pro or Pro Extended, try the Preflight Fixup to embed hidden text.
Then try using the TouchUp Text tool. You may also want to see if you can change the font type of this newly embedded font.
(use copies of the "real" files - just in case <g>).
    Be well...

  • Rotating image, decomposition page, recognizing text... etc.

    Hi,
Each time I open new pdf file, there is a small pop-uo with black background on the right bottom of the file indicating some operations: rotating image, decomposition page, recognizing text... as here:
These popups appear automatically, even if the document is in good quality! Meanwhile I can't navigate the document! I have to wait until the end of these processes (this could take longtime depending on the size of file) !
Does anybody know how to deactivate these popups?
    Thanks.

I had this problem in Acrobat Pro 9.4.5 and just figured out how to fix it: It is related to a "read out loud" setting.
Apparently Acrobat OCR's the document just to figure out in which order it  should be read aloud, and there's no way to disable this.  The document  I was having trouble with does have equations in it, so whether or not this takes long enough to be annoying may depend on whether the document contains things that are hard for OCR to process.
You can fix it by editing preferences for "Reading" and change Reading Order to "Left-to-right, top-to-bottom..." instead of "Infer reading order from document (recommended)".  Then make sure Screen Reader Options is set to "Only read the currently visible pages".

  • I need to convert PDF file to Word Document, so it can be edited. But the recognizing text options do not have the language that I need. How I can convert the file in the desired of me language?

I need to convert PDF file to Word Document, so it can be edited. But the recognizing text options do not have the language that I need. How I can convert the file in the desired of me language?

The application Acrobat provides no language translation capability.
If you localize the language for OS, MS Office applications, Acrobat, etc to the desired language try again.
Alternative: transfer a copy of content into a web based translation service (Bing or Google provides a free service).
Transfer the output into a word processing program that is localized to the appropriate language.
    Do cleanup.

  • Acrobat X freezes when I run a JavaScript Action after about 200 files.

Acrobat X freezes when I run a JavaScript Action after about 200 files, batches with less than 200 files work well.  I can watch the Acrobat.exe process in the resource monitor and when the Threads reach about 2000 and the Working Memory reaches 500mb, Acrobat freezes.  The JavaScript creates 2 redaction areas, applies the redaction, then saves the file to another location.  I've tested it on both Windows Server 2008 and Win7 32bit. I'm running Acrobat X Pro fully update to 10.1.10.

It is possible to have the Redaction tool search for a text string across multiple PDFs without using the "Action" wizard or batch processing. You will have to learn the exact steps to properly set the properties for each string of text. You can also review the items marked for redaction and either accept, remove or adjust as needed each one.
There are 3rd party tools that can also redact PDFs and they existed long before this feature was added to Acrobat. Appligent Document Solutions Redax..
Appligent even has a server based product for large amount of files or using watched folders.

  • Acrobat 7 freezes after cancelling the user password prompt

I'm having a problem with Acrobat 7.1 when downloading a password-protected PDF from a website.  The problem occurs at the "please enter a document open password" dialog box.  If I enter the user password, the PDF opens successfully.  However, if I click Cancel instead of entering the password, Acrobat hangs/freezes in the background (visible in the Task Manager) and the CPU spikes to 50%.  At that point, opening another PDF freezes Internet Explorer since it's still waiting on the Acrobat process hanging in the background.  I've tested on both Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 with the same result.  The problem appears to be resolved in Acrobat 9, but unfortunately my users are stuck on Acrobat 7.1 for the time being.  Any help would be greatly appreciated!

As Baltwo said, you should have a password set on your computer for secutity reasons. You can set it to automatically log you on if you are the only user when starting up and you don't need to input the password.
What Baltwo was getting to was to make sure nothing was in the field such as a space. Apparantly, it won't let you log into it without a password.
I seem to remember a default password in past systems. I think it was computer. Try typing that in. If it doesn't work, then follow the steps in this article and set a password for your user account.

  • Help.  Acrobat pro freezes after 9.5.1 update

my acrobat pro freezes everytime when i try opening a PDF. i have just updated/upgraded to the 9.5.1. i'm on a mac os lion.

    Hi,
According to Acrobat 9.5.1 release notes http://helpx.adobe.com/content/dam/help/attachments/Acrobat_Reader_ReleaseNote_9.5.1.pdf acrobat 9 is not supported on Apple - OS X Lion(10.7.x).
You can upgrade to Acrobat X which is supported on Lion http://helpx.adobe.com/content/dam/help/attachments/Acrobat_Reader_ReleaseNote_10.1.3.pdf or use acrobat 9.5.1 on 10.6.x.

  • Acrobat 7 freezes when combining multiple files

I'm running Acrobat 7 Standard, and whenever I attempt to combine multiple PDF files acrobat will freeze up completely. It can scan, and add pages to an open document with no trouble. It will freeze whether I choose Create PDF From Multiple Files within acrobat, or if I select multiple files in windows explorer, then right click and choose Combine in Acrobat...
I have cleared temporary files, repaired the program, and completely reinstalled the program. Even after a fresh reinstallation, it will lock up when trying to combine multiple files. It does everything else just fine.
I am running a HPCompaq dc5100 MT, with Windows XP Pro. I have 2GB ram, and a P4 3.2Ghz processor. I also have a database program called Laserfiche that I run, though this problem occurs whether I have Laserfiche open or not. I've already tried killing all acceptable processes (minus adobe's of course) and recreated the error. I've also tried this with the most recent update 7.1.0 and without: both yeild the same result. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Dear all,
I think I have the same problem... or not ?!
=> When I try to open multiple files at the same time it opens only the 2 or 3 first ones then it freezes on the Spinning Beach Ball of Death !
=> Then it never completely finishes loading and freezes up Indesign.
=> I am unable to cancel the dialog box and have to use cmd+alt+esc to close the program
=> then, the files open directly on indesign when I open the program again (jus as if the files had been loaded and ready to go)
I am working on MAC OS X (10.7.3)
Anybody could help please ?? (sorry for my english... I'm a French native speaker)

  • Acrobat 7 freezes for a few seconds at every startup

I am hoping someone can please enlighten me as to why Acrobat 7 freezes for a few seconds everytime the program is started.  If starting the program directly from executing the associated pdf file, the program loads the first page, freezes (stops responding) for approx 6 to 8 seconds, then responds to user interface again.
It is not the machine as I have the same problem on many different machines.  Help please.

Disabling hardware acceleration seemed to solve the problem. Thank you all very much, but before I close this thread as solved, I've always had that feature enabled to the best of my knowledge. Why did it suddenly cause problems?

  • Acrobat reader freezing

Anyone else have this problem? Acrobat reader freezes when I try to print some - not all - pdf documents. When this happens I can't quit reader and the print dialog box refuses to close. The only solution is to force quit reader. Interestingly, when I open force quit it does not say that reader is not responding.
It's not a showstopper, I can print pdf docs OK in Preview or in Windows, but just wondering if anyone else has this problem and what the solution is. I am using the latest version of reader and everything else is up to date.
    Tom

And OS 10.5.8 (not 10.5.7 as the last post says)

  • Lots of errors during basic text chat

With Leopard iChat 4 I'm constantly getting this error during basic text chats: "An AIM service error occurred. Error: Serv:RequestTimeout". I get this constantly... practically after each line I send. I am on dial-up but have NEVER had this problem before. Reminds me of the error I might get if I send lots of lines in a row very quickly but this is just after a single line and with a long pause. No matter what I do it seems to happen making iChat nearly unusable. Nothing has changed with my set-up since my upgrade to Leopard.
I'll add that I've noticed that I'm also losing my iChat connection to the aol server which never happened before.
Looking around it seems others are having a variety of problems so I suppose I'm not alone but I'm posting because I did not see any mention of this exact error.

I seem to have solved my various internet related problems (iChat was one of several) and the source problem seems to be the software provided by my dial-up isp, JUNO. The solution was to connect directly via OS X network preferences using PPP. In the past I've always used the JUNO software to connect. Earlier today it occurred to me that I have never even tired to bypass the JUNO software. Since logging on via Leopard's built in PPP I've not had any iChat errors and am also now able to send larger emails via smtp. So, perhaps in my case the culprit was an incompatibility between Leopard and the JUNO software.

  • Can not delete text messages without phone freezing when i reset it text messages are back

can not delete text messages without phone freezing when i reset it text messages are back...help taking up a lot of space.

    Try this...
Close out all apps (double click the home button and swipe up) then delete one thread.  Do a hard reset of the phone or ipad, then wait a few minutes and it should be gone.  I just did this with a thread that had thousands of txt and it worked for me.  The older phones just don't have much processing power.

  • Built-in PDF viewer could better render low quality PDF using the recognized text

I've been a little frustrated with this. When I view a low quality PDF on a university website, zooming in/out on firefox (v34.0 and v35.0.1 on linux is what I've tried) proves that the quality could be drastically improved. The original fonts looks like the pdf-lowqual.png file below: (unable to upload images on here)
    http://i59.tinypic.com/169kkcw.png
While zooming in or out, the font displays as normal "hypertext" or whathave you before going back to looking ugly again, as seen here:
    http://i61.tinypic.com/2gvptw0.png
Is there a way to permanently display the recognized text with local or internet fonts? I assume the text is recognized as that is what allows one to select text.

[[Use the Adobe Reader plugin to view or download PDF files]] or [[View PDF files in Firefox without downloading them]] are the current offerings for viewing pdfs in Firefox.
However, there are alternatives like embedding fonts into the pdf. I do also know that there are web safe fonts with similar function: [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Web_typography#Web-safe_fonts]
