Acrobat X Opening Slow

We have been running Acrobat X Pro 10.1.0 in Windows 7 for quite some time.  In the last few days, it has started to open very slowly.  You click on either a .pdf file or the Acrobat shortcut and it takes 30 seconds + for Acrobat to load.  If you close the file, but keep Acrobat running, subsequent files open just fine.
Has anyone else experienced this?
Is there a Windows Update or something that installed which is causing this issue to suddenly occur?
Thanks!
Andrea

No, multiple people have been experiencing this problem since the Acrobat 10.1.0.534 update.  Check out the other forum on this topic:  http://forums.adobe.com/thread/867133?start=0&tstart=0

  • Acrobat X Standard - slow to open (with workaround)

I have an issue with Acrobat X Standard (10.1.5) occuring in a consistant manner on many machines:  opening any pdf takes 5-8 seconds.  During this time the cursor spins, but the pdf does eventually happen.  The *only* fix for this issue is remove the Annots.api file from within the C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Acrobat 10.0\Acrobat\plug_ins directory.  When this file is removed (or renamed) Acrobat will open pdf documents in less than a second.
This is 100% consistant behavior, and workaround, across many computers.  It does not seem to matter if this is a 9.x to X upgrade, or a fresh installation of X.  This is a show-stopper that prevents deployment of Acrobat X Standard to thousands of workstations.
What, exactly, does Annots.api do?  I am assuming it is needed to perform some annotation/comment functionality and it would be unwise to remove this file from all computers.  I would be happy to send a copy to an Adobe support representative, otherwise I would like to know if this is a known-issue or if there is a more suitable workaround.

Appears to be any pdf (a simple one-page doc, form, embedded active content, etc)

  • Email review creates workflows file size that makes Acrobat 9 unbearably slow.

I have been using the email review features in Acrobat pro version 9.3.1. All was going fine until, apparently, my workflows file got to around 1.5mb. If I understand correctly this is the file that Review Tracker uses to track PDF emailed for review.
The problem is Acrobat becomes unbearably slow to open and operate.
I narrowed down the reason by opening Acrobat with no plugins loaded and it operated fine. Then by enabling and disabling various plugins I found that when any plug-in having something to do with the commenting and tracking process was enabled acrobat again became unbearably slow. Through searching on this forum I found the workflows file that is created for tracking email reviews. I discovered with all plug-ins enabled and with the workflow file removed acrobat operated fine when I put the file back it again opens and operates unbearably slow.
So I know how to make Acrobat operate correctly by removing the Workflows file. Acrobat will create a new one if I start another review. The big problem is I have lost all my tracking on previous reviews.
I was wondering if anyone else might have had a similar problem when the Workflows file became larger than 1.5mb or so?
Does anyone know of a way I can keep my previous email reviews and still have acrobat operate correctly?
I also wonder if this will happen again?
Thank you for your time and knowledge.

Flattening should be expected to make files bigger, much bigger in the worst case. It is rarely a way to reduce size, though sometimes it will be - it all depends on what is in the file.
An example where it could reduce size is where a series of images are overlayed transparently. This would end up being a single one. There may be cases where lots of layers get consolidated into something simpler, but if the layers were vector and the result is raster it won't.
So, flattening might be a useful tool, but it's best to try it and test the result.
Better still to stop the proprietary software from choking... !

  • Acrobat will open only one pdf at a time.

Hi. Can someone please clarify for me why Adobe Acrobat will open allow one pdf to be visible at a time. If addtional pdf's are opened they display as black. Means I cannot stitch multiple pdfs together.
Am using Windows 7 Pro and Acrobat X Pro. Attached below is screen shot of 2 pdfs open at same time. The one behind is fine while the one in front appears black but if was opened on its own would open fine.
    Thanks

That looks like a graphics driver bug - try turning off/on hardware acceleration under Acrobat's preferences, and ensure your drivers are up to date.
Acrobat doesn't tend to play well with multiple-monitor setups, but it shouldn't do what you're seeing.

  • Error Message: There was an error opening this document. Acrobat cannot open this file because a task is still active in Acrobat.

I've tried Command Q to close;  Tried Adobe Reader Tool Bar but closing is grayed out;  I'ved held the power button for hard close, but everytime I try to open a .pdf I get this message:
There was an error opening this document. Acrobat cannot open this file because a task is still active in Acrobat.
I'm not extremely technical, but I can follow directions if someone can help!
    Thanks

    Looks like it got stuck.
You can switch to another program or the Finder (click on desktop) and Apple menu > Force Quit > Adobe
You can press and hold the power button, it's a emergency force shutdown which you can boot normally and it should be fine.

  • How to stop AdobeReader (or Acrobat) to open in Safari?

    Hi,
I'm running OS 10.4.5 and Safari 2.0.3. Recently I updated Adobe Reader as well as Acrobat to v. 7.0.7 (On and off I still need them). Before that, when downloading a .PDF, I had set it to be viewed with Preview within Safari. Now it's always Acrobat that opens up within Safari (taking a long time to do so). Unfortunately these Adobe products seem to have overridden my settings. How can I end this unpleasant dominance of Adobe?
If you know how to do this, then you probably also know how to remove .PDF-Maker from Microsoft Office?
    Please help.
    Thanks

To keep other aplications from launching within Safari, open Safari Preferences (Safari > Preferences; or press command , ), and click the general tab, now click at the bottom the radio button that says "Open Links from Applications:" select "In a new window". This should correct this.
    Hope this helps,

  • Acrobat 9 opens all recently opened documents

Since I installed Acrobat 9 Pro Extended on a clean system, everytime I start Acrobat or open a pdf-file, all other pdf-files I recently opened have been reopened automaticly. So I open pdf-A, and after the blink of an eye, pdf-B and pdf-C etc are opened too.
I tried to reinstall Acrobat but that won't work. Maybe there is a problem with Photoshop CS4 which is running on my computer too. On my old system, without Photoshop, Acrobat was running fine.
I hope you can help me.
p.s: Sry for my english, it's not my mother tongue

With much relief, I have found a temporary work-around for Windows users, at least:
Create a New User Account on your computer, then login as the new user, who, of course, has no recently opened documents.  I'll be then be using LoriAUC's suggesttion to clear the history regularly.

  • Acrobat not opening files in "adobe pdf format"????

I just got the message (The document “7/11Diverticulitis.pdf” could not be opened. Acrobat cannot open files in the “Adobe PDF document” format.) after trying to create a pdf file on my new computer. Recently upgraded to MacPro On Snow Leopard oper. system.  I had all my old stuff transfered to new computer. It all worked fine before. I am using a HPPhotosmart C7250 all-in-one printer/scanner. I needed to upgrade the scanner/printer software driver, did that already. Why doesnt' this work correctly. Steps for creating a pdf file are also different than before but I was able to create on, but can't open it with the new computer . Any ideas?

You say that you transferred everything from another computer -- did you use Migration Assistant, or just copy things over?
Either way, it is probably best to reinstall Acrobat from the disk, as it looks like some components have not been copied over.
(Nothing wrong with having / in a filename on OS X. The only banned character is a semicolon. If you plan on transferring files to Windows, there is a host of chars that they can't use, though.)

  • Acrobat cannot open files in the "Adobe PDF document" format

The document “example.pdf” could not be opened. Acrobat cannot open files in the “Adobe PDF document” format.
    Hi All,
Running Acrobat Pro 9.4.2 on Snow Leopard, have never had this problem before. Showed up about a week ago, I believe with new update. Can't double click on a file in Finder, or drag and drop to AcrobatPro in Dock, but can open from within Acrobat Pro / File / Open command.
All my preferences are correct with "Open With Acrobat Pro" as the default.
I've read all the threads I can find with no answers yet.
Anyone found and answer, I see a lot of us are going through this over the last year.
Only possible common thread I have found is possibly HP printers. But I've been running HP printers all along with no issues.
    Thanks for you input.

Either Acrobat needs to be re-installed or the file is named as a pdf file, but it is not a pdf file. Try opening the pdf file in a text editor and read off what the first line of the file is.

Can all Acrobat Readers open files with mixed orientation pages (portrait and landscape)? If not, which versions can? Thanks!

    Hi Sami,
You can open files with mixed page orientations in all Adobe Readers There is no such constraint on opening files with different page orientations in Adobe Readers.

What happens if you try converting the page using Acrobat?  Is this a public page or internal, if public can you provide the url.

  • Acrobat cannot open the file attachment because your PDF file attachment settings do not allow......

I have an email with an attachment that requires a password the open.  I can open the file but embedded in the attachment is another attachment.  When I double click attachment I get the following error message.  Acrobat cannot open the file attachment because your PDF file attachment settings do not allow this file type to be opened.

You would need to make a change to your registry; see http://www.adobe.com/devnet-docs/acrobatetk/tools/AppSec/attachments.html
Basically you would need to add the .pdf with the permission 2.
Let us know if you need help with that.  Either way, make sure to create a System Restore Point before editing the registry.

  • Acrobat cannot open pdf files

During a working session Acrobat stopped opening new files. This occurred on 12-3. I restared Acrobat and the problem went away. The problem repeated itself on 12-4. This time a restart did not help. I tried a reboot, program repair, program uninstall/reinstall and system restore. Acrobat still will not open files.
    Any thoughts?

Is this opening an issue from Windows Explorer or the file menu in Acrobat? What versions of Acrobat and Windows?

It opened fine for me, sometimes it takes the Apple servers a while to respond so may be at that end the problem lies not with your internet connection. That is why people suggest other hosts for commercial sites. I like your site - very good layout.
