Acrobat X Pro interactive Map/Dropdown fields

I create a variety of .pdfs for different purposes which are all related to the same parent (in this case a building on a site).
I now want to create an interactive map so that I can click the building (button, graphic shape or image etc) and be presented a collapsable list so that I can then select (from a list) the .pdf I am interested in (discipline specific) and open it in a new acrobat window. Each .pdf name in the dropdown list is to represent a separate .pdf file from the same or different network storage location (I am aware the file name(s)/location(s) must not change).
I have investigated Acrobat X Pro, Adobe Illustrator CS4 and Adobe InDesign CS4. I have decided to target Acrobat as Illustrator did not seem to allow linking and InDesign did not seem to allow List Boxes or Dropdowns for linking purposes. Also, I only wanted to create/manage one file (my interactive map)...my 'menu'...in graphical form...without going down the path of creating a web site.
Am I on the right track? Is this possible?
However, after adding the Dropdown field to my form (interactive pdf map), although it allowed any of the available list items to be selected, it DID NOT allow different actions for different list items!
I added two separate Open file actions (which could not be linked to the two separate list items)...one to open a pdf ffrom one location and the other to open a separate pdf from another location. When you click the field (button)...it just opens BOTH pdf files! Not what I wanted.
I would have thought that the very nature of a Dropdown list is to be able to select from a collapsable list and perform a specific action on that selection (after all, it does allow multiple similar actions, along with multiple different actions).
Can THIS be done?...in Acrobat?...in another Creative Suite application?

Thanks, but...I could not find a `combo box' field, and I have to ask why would I have to write custom code when the `dropdown' field is provided?
Why can't a different action be linked to a different list choice in a dropdown field?
If I want to perform a single action, then I would use a `single' button, but that's not what I want to do.

    I have been creating forms in InDesign and pulling into Acrobat XI Pro to do form fields. My client would like to fill in the PDF form using Reader, save under a different name locally on their device, and redistribute. The problem I have is that, sometimes, they want to redistribute the form as Read Only. I know how to flatten the form on a mobile device, but uncertain how they can do that with a PC or Mac using Adobe Reader. I looked at FormsCentral thinking there might be a solution going that route, but don't believe there is. Any advice?

    FormsCentral won't help with flattening a form. You could set up the form in Acrobat so that the fields are set to read-only, using JavaScript. Not quite the same as flattening but it's the best Reader can do.
    Note that when Reader is used to e-sign a document, it gets flattened, but this won't be possible if you need to Reader-enable the form and under certain other conditions.

  • Acrobat X Pro detects no form fields in the PDF created by Excel

    I am using Acrobat X Pro on a Macbook running Yosemite OS X.  Office 2011 and Acrobat are both fully updated.
    I have created a PDF from an Excel spreadsheet.  two columns.  first column has text to describe what the user is supposed to enter in the second column.  the cells in the second column have a border box drawn around them.  I saved this Excel document as a PDF.  I opened it in Acrobat X Pro and used the Tool - Create Fillable Form.  It gives a message saying "No form fields detected".  What am i doing wrong?  Is there an issue with this process?

    i have read at least 4 articles and watch 3 videos that do almost the same process i have explained.  the only difference is that they used Word to create their PDF doc.  they had no issues.
    so i am wondering if there is something wrong with the Excel PDF process.  i have tried this one 2 different MacBooks with same result.
    what does the cell have to have in order for Acrobat to detect it as a form field?
    I have a spreadsheet that has over 300 fields that should have been detected.  so yes, i could create them manually, but i am hoping to get this Acrobat to detect them.
    I tried the process you did "File=>Create Form".  i got same message.
    i built a separate little test process to describe the issue.  see image that is attached.
    it is very simple, yet no fields were detected.

  • Acrobat X Pro - Duplication of form fields

    I use Acrobat X Pro to make fillable forms and frequently have an issue with form fields duplicating over top of each other when I try to format a group of fields. Our forms are often several pages in length and it's very time consuming to have to repeatedly delete the duplicate fields and reformat the original fields. I have the same issue when I attempt to copy radio buttons from one form to another (e.g. I copy the radio buttons from the English to the French versions of the same form to save time of adding and formatting the radio buttons on the French PDF). Is there a way I can prevent the fields from duplicating? My operating system is Windows XP.

  • Sum problems in Acrobat XI Pro

    I am having a problem with the sum command in Acrobat XI Pro wherby the total field is duplicating the sum of the calcualted fields, i.e ten fields are totalled and it duplicates the sum of the last 4 fields in the total fields. I have checked the calucation order is correct, but still ti will not work. Can anyone help please?

    Hi there, thanks for responding.
    Basically yes, that is my problem. I have say 10 rows and each one has a freetype box where people can enter the number of miles, the next field is a pull down list to specify a mileage rate and the last one calculates the product of the two. Then I have a total field at the bottom to sum all the totals. However, it is duplicating the totals from row two onwards, e.g. if I have two values, £12 and £15 the result returned is £42, adding the last line twice.
    I have checked the calculation order in my document and still have the same problem. I am lost......

  • InDesign CS6 & Acrobat X Pro Issues

    When I create a form in InDesign CS6 and import it into Acrobat X Pro, and then Export as PDF, when you fill in the form, nothing shows or prints, but the data is there when you click on the field.
    So... I delete the form fields from InDesign and recreate them in Acrobat X Pro. Now the fields show and print correctly. Happens on both PC/Mac. Ultimate destination for the forms is on the Android OS for Galaxy 10.1 tablet.
    But... the calculate fields that worked before now do NOT work in the recreated fields from Acrobat X Pro. Worse, no options show up at all when you click "Pick" to select the fields to calculate. Need HELP as soon as possible so I don't lose a good client.

    Here's what I posted in the other topic you posted in:
    In this case you can also use the simplified field notation, though it would be much easier if you were to change your field names. For example, the first row you want to sum the following two fields:
    "REG. HRS" and "O.T. HRS"
    Since the field names include the period and space characters these need to be escaped, so you'd have to enter the following:
    REG\.\ HRS + O\.T\.\ HRS
    If you were to change the names to:
    "REG_HRS" and "OT_HRS"
    The simplified field notation entry would be simply:
    REG_HRS + OT_HRS
    If you were to further refine the field naming scheme to something like:
    Row 1:  R1.REG_HRS, R1.OT_HRS
    Row 2:  R2.REG_HRS, R2.OT_HRS
    A single script could be used for all of the rows, and called in the calculate event of each "DAILY TOTAL" field. I realize this may sound like jibberish at the moment, but if you want to pursue it, post again. In the mean time, the simplified field notation option will work.

  • Create a dynamic dropdown field in Adobe Acrobat Pro XI

    Hello all. I am trying to create a field in one of my forms using Adobe Acrobat Pro XI. I have a dropdown list of "main" items, and based on what is selected in that list, I want a second dropdown list to give different choices. I have searched and searched and have javascript that I thought might work, but maybe I am have a mistake or I am placing the javascript in the wrong place, becasue it is not working. I know very, very little about javascript, so any help would be so much appreciated.
    I am using Adobe Acrobat Pro XI. I added a "new field", and selected "dropdown". The field name is ProvType. The dropdown options are:
         Inpatient
         Outpatient
         Physician
    I have the "Commit selected value immediately" selected.The field is not validated. The format is "none." There are no actions or calculations associated with it.
    I then created another dropbox, and named it SubProvType. Under Actions, I selected the trigger as Mouse Up, and then selected the Action "Run a JavaScript." I selected the add button, and typed this in the JavaScript editor:
    switch (ProvType.rawValue)
        case "Inpatient":
            this.setItems("Hospice,Hospital,Nursing Facility");
            break;
        case "Outpatient":
            this.setItems("Adult Day Center,Home,Other");
            break;
        case "Physician":
            this.setItems("Surgeon,Family Practice,Neurologist");
            break;
    What I want to happen is:
    If "Inpatient" is selected, I want the following options to be available in the second dropdown box "SubProvType":
         Hospice
         Hospital
         Nursing Facility
    If "Outpatient" is selected, I want the following options to be available in the second dropdown box "SubProvType":
         Adult Day Center
         Home
         Other
    If "Physician" is selected, I want the following options to be available in the second dropdown box "SubProvType":
         Surgeon
         Family Practice
         Neurologist
    However.... when I close the form editing and try to select a different option in the ProvType field, the SubProvType field remains blank and there are no options available. There are also no errors.
    I must be missing something, but I have no idea where to start. Thank you in advance for any help anyone can provide.

    dbettis2.... Please understand that everything I am about to tell you is ONLY thanks to the help I received from Gilad D. I don't know if this will help you or not, but I want to try and pass it forward.
    If what you are looking to do is have two dropdown fields, and the second one (concentration) be a list determined by what was chosen in the first one (newMajor) then this will work, if you are using Adobe Acrobat Pro.
    Create a dropdown field and name it newMajor. In the "options" tab. Make sure that you enter all of the items that you want in that list AND that they match the javascript (or this will not work.)
    In this case, I believe you want the initial list to be:
    - Select One -
    BA - Communication (BACOMM)
    BA - History (BAHIST)
    BBA - Business Administration (BBA-BADM)
    After you create the dropdown field and enter all of the options, go to the Validate tab, chose "run custom validation script", then copy and paste the following:
    switch (event.value) {
        case "- Select One -":
            this.getField("Concentration").setItems(["-----"]);
            break;
        case "BA - Communication (BACOMM)":
            this.getField("Concentration").setItems(["- Select One -","None","Mass Communication (MCO1)","Theatre (THEA)","Communication Studies (MC02)"]);
            break;
        case "BA - History (BAHIST)":
            this.getField("Concentration").setItems(["- Select One -","None","Teacher Certification (HIS1)"]);
            break;
        case "BBA - Business Administration (BBA-BADM)":
            this.getField("Concentration").setItems(["- Select One -","None","Supply Chain Management (SCM)","Hospitality Management (HSMG)"]);
            break;
    Then create a second dropdown field, and name it Concentration. Nothing further needs to be done with the second dropdown field (as far as entering options or any javascript.)
    It should work. I have created a form using this code and field structure, and it is working. I hope this helps you, if in fact this is what you were trying to do. (I do not know how to attach a file to this post or I would send you the PDF that I made so you could see the fields. If you message me, I can send it to you.)

  • How to copy/paste as unformatted text in Acrobat 9 Pro text field?

    Hi all,
    I'm having difficulty copying/pasting text from another source as unformatted text in an interactive PDF text field in Acrobat 9 Pro. I have specified the font size, colour and typeface for the text field. However, when I copy and paste text, the text retains its formatting. Strangely enough, this isn't an issue when I type out the text.
    I'm really not keen on typing out all the text for all the text fields because:
    there's alot of it
    waste of my time
    potentially introducing typos
    Any ideas?
    Cheers,
    Trish

    Thanks for your suggestion! That actually did work pretty well.
    I had set up all the fields as non-rich text, cut and pasted the text into the fields, and then change the fields back to rich text to format them (ie superscript, subscript etc).
    Unfortunately, now I'm faced with another problem.
    I won't be able to add more "unformatted" text later on easily. It appears that to do so, I would have to change the fields to non-rich text which wipes out all the formatting I've already applied.
    Any suggestions?
    Cheers,
    Trish

  • Populating values in a dropdown field on the interactive form using WD ABAP

    Hi All,
        I want to populate values in a dropdown field( of cardinality 0:n ) on interactive form,The values which i want to populate is from a 'z' table which i have created.I used a select query to fetch the entries but on my interactive form the values are flowing in many rows and not in the drop down.I want all the values to be in the dropdown.The dropdown is not showin even one value under it.I am using webdynpro abap and controls from webdynpro native.Can anyone guide me on this with a step by step procedure.
    Useful suggestions will be rewarded.
    Thanks and Regards,
    Srividya.

    You mean in PFR of controller , ie after user selects a record from LOV window and after its populated back into to the textItem on the main entry form ??
    The value is displayed correctly in the intended textItem which has viewInstance and viewValue attached to it .
    so this is what setup looks like
    Entry form
    Customer Name - lov
    Customer Number(d) - Display Only - Populated by Lovmappings from LOV - mapped to Customer Number attribute on LOV window. It also has viewInstance and ViewAttrib assigned to it .
    Save Action
    At this point of time , i am assuming i already have value in Customer Number(d)since its displayed on the screen,rite ??
    or Do i have to take the value in formValue and then explicitly do a setAttribute to set that value to view object /Customer Number(d)
    hope this helps to understand the scenario

  • How do you grey out/disable fields under a radio button if another radio button is selected in Adobe Acrobat XI Pro?

    How do you grey out/disable fields under a radio button if another radio button is selected in Adobe Acrobat XI Pro?
    I’m creating a form where the user has three options to make a payment.
    1. charge to my credit card
    2. charge associated costs to bank account
    3. By cheque or money order
    My Problem is, under each option, there are required fields that has to be filled out. So if the user picks the first option, charge to my credit card, they would fill out the required fields (credit card number, expiration date etc.). But when they click submit button to submit the form, it won’t let them, because there are required fields under the second option. Also, I have the radio buttons for the three options setup so that if the user holds the shift key and clicks a radio button, it unchecks it. So what I'm trying to do is this: If the user selects the radio button for option 1, the other two options are greyed out/disabled. And if the user holds down the shift key and clicks radio button for option one again, it unchecks the radio button and the other two options are available again. Is there a way to grey out or disable the two other payment options when the other one is picked. I’m assuming I will have to use javascript, but what would the coding be and which field do I write it under?
    Thanks in advance guys

    You will have to use custom JavaScript to access the various properties of the field object.
    The radio button group has a value. When no button is selected that value is "Off". When an individual button has been selected the value for the group will be the option or export value for that individual button.
    Once you have determined the button selected, then you will know the form fields that need to be made required. You use JavaScript to access those fields and change the "read only" property to false, and set the "required" property to true. For the fields associated with the other options, those fields should be reset, made read only, and have the "required" property set to false.
    Disabling (graying-out) Form Fields
    >> Also, I have the radio buttons for the three options setup so that if the user holds the shift key and clicks a radio button, it unchecks it.
    Radio button in a PDF do not work that way. Only check boxes can be unchecked by clicking on one that has been checked.
    If you plan the coding for the Mouse UP action to test for all possible options and code for each of those options you should have what you want.
    If you want actual code you need to provide a lot more details.
    It is even possible to perform some credit card and bank routing number validations with JavaScript and some check digit formulas.

  • How do you grey out a radio button if a text field is blank in Adobe Acrobat XI Pro?

    How do you grey out a radio button if a text field is blank in Adobe Acrobat XI Pro?
    So this what I'm trying to do:
    (     )   |TEXT FIELD|
    (     )   |TEXT FIELD|
    (     )   |                  |
    (     )   |TEXT FIELD|
    I have a radio button: (     )
    and a text field: |TEXT FIELD|
    The third text field is blank, and I would like for the radio button next to it greyed out (user can't click on it) since the text field is blank. Is this possible to achieve? I'm assuming I'll have to use javascript, but what would the code be and would it be entered in the javascript editor for the text field or the radio button?
    Thanks in advance guys

    Hey, thanks, but it didn't work
    I have the text fields as read only. Could that be why it's not working? Should I make the fields not read only?

    Created PDF form in Acrobat XI Pro, but HELP fields disappear when I save FCDT file to PDF. Please help. Thanks!

    I am not aware of a field type "Help" within a PDF form. I do not see it as a form field that can be added in the form edit mode.
    Forms Central forms do not support all the features of Acrobat forms.
    Are you talking about the "Tool Tips" or a hidden field that only shows when one enters a field and is hidden upon exiting the field.

  • Acrobat X Pro Drop-down Fields Do Not Appear on Adobe Reader for iPad. Help!

    Hello,
    I am having a problem getting drop-down fields to appear on Adobe Reader for iPad. Basically, I need to create a form that includes drop-down fields, with the end result being a form that can be viewed and completed on an iPad, using the Adobe Reader app. Above all else, the end result needs to be viewable on an iPad.
    I created a form using Acrobat X Pro within which drop-down fields work flawlessly. However, when I try to open this form on an iPad, the drop-down fields do not even appear. I have done some investigating on the Web (including these forums) and come to understand that this has to do with javascript limitations on Apple products, but have yet to discover a solution to my problem.
    To summarize: does anyone know how to make drop-down fields appear in Abobe Reader for iPad app? Or, does anyone know a workaround in which I could have a drop-down menu (or something similar) in my form and have it work on Adobe Reader for iPad?
    Thanks in advance for the help. I took on this project from my boss' boss, so I'd really like to get this done for him.

    Hello GKaiseril,
    Thanks for the reply. I experienced the issue running the most recent version of the Adobe Mobile Reader app. I'm not sure I can convince the client to use anything else, but its worth a shot.
    All I need is a simple drop-down list (multiple fields in the document) with 4 options that the user can select and submit as a form. Is this something EZ Pdf reader can do? Also, is EZ Pdf Reader free? (the reason I ask is I am an Android user and do not readily have access to a iPad).
    Thanks again.
