Acrobat X Standard - slow to open (with workaround)

I have an issue with Acrobat X Standard (10.1.5) occuring in a consistant manner on many machines:  opening any pdf takes 5-8 seconds.  During this time the cursor spins, but the pdf does eventually happen.  The *only* fix for this issue is remove the Annots.api file from within the C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Acrobat 10.0\Acrobat\plug_ins directory.  When this file is removed (or renamed) Acrobat will open pdf documents in less than a second.
This is 100% consistant behavior, and workaround, across many computers.  It does not seem to matter if this is a 9.x to X upgrade, or a fresh installation of X.  This is a show-stopper that prevents deployment of Acrobat X Standard to thousands of workstations.
What, exactly, does Annots.api do?  I am assuming it is needed to perform some annotation/comment functionality and it would be unwise to remove this file from all computers.  I would be happy to send a copy to an Adobe support representative, otherwise I would like to know if this is a known-issue or if there is a more suitable workaround.

Windows 7 x64 professional
Acrobat X Standard with latest 10.1.5
Appears to be any pdf (a simple one-page doc, form, embedded active content, etc)

  • Acrobat X Standard - slow to open

    Good morning;
I am working to resolve an issue with Acrobat X Standard (10.1.5).  It appears that loading stamps when Acrobat opens causes a timely delay, depending on the number and size of stamps files.  This has not previously been an issue with 8.x and 9.x using the exact same number of stamps files.
If you look at the table below, I've used procmon to measure the time it takes for Acrobat process to start to the time the file is displayed on the screen and the UI is responsive.   "Only default" refers to the 7 stamps files that are included with Acrobat Standard out of the box.  We use an additional 7 files for customized stamps related to our business.
    Stamps
    Load time
    none
    1.7 seconds
    only default
    3.9 seconds
    only custom
    7.1 seconds
    default + custom
    14.2 seconds
As you can see, as you add more files the load time increases at a fairly steady increment (note that load times are probably 20-30% bloated due to the overhead of running procmon).
I understand there will be some add'l load time as more stamps are used, but considering the same stamps with 8.x and 9.x only took a fraction of the time (2 seconds, on average), there is clearly a big loss of efficiency here.  Is there anything that can be done to reduce this, besides the obvious answer of removing all stamps (which is not an option).

  • Acrobat 8 Standard crashes when opening PDFs created from  Microsoft Project 2007

Issue: Acrobat 8 Standard crashes when opening PDFs created from Microsoft Project 2007.
    OS: Win XP Pro SP3
    Error Message(s): None
Details: This issue happens with multiple Microsoft Project files (including new files), multiple PDF creators (included Acrobat 8 Standard) and on multiple computers. We also tried opening the PDFs in Adobe Reader 8 instead of Acrobat Standard 8. There is no record in the event log on the computers of the application crashes.

I may have a resolution now...
I clicked Tools -> Options -> View and turned off Bars and shapes in Gantt views in 3-D" on the advice of someone on a Microsoft Forum. I made three PDFs from three Microsoft Project files (that were having trouble previously) and was not able to get these PDFs to crash when zooming or changing pages. So far so good!

  • PDF file from Outlook folder created with Standard X not opened with Reader XI _ Flash issue ?

    Dear Community,
I tried to fix this issue but i have to admit i'm stuck right now :
Computer on windows 7 SP1 with Adobe Reader XI and Adobe Standard X installed.
On Outlook 2010, I convert a folder to a PDF file so i can navigate offline and share the mails with colleagues.
At the end of the conversion, Adobe Standard X opens and all the tree architecture of the PDf is available, browse in all files, open attached documents...
But as soon as, on my computer or on other computer only with Reader XI, the PDF file (whatever it's size and number of mails inside) is to be opened with Reader, there's a message saying that flash player compatible with Adobe Reader and Acrobat as to be installed.
There's no precision regarding the flash version to use, and clicking on the link to open web browser, no page is opened (no internet issue).
After 1 minute, Reader finnally opens but only displaying the first file of the PDF (in my case the first mail of the outlook folder).
i have the latest flash player version installed
Can anybody tell me if this problem is known ? or if someone knows how to fix it so the pdf file can be fully used in Reader ??
    Many thanks for your help.

    Hi Kiro ,
Did you try opening that file in any other browser ?If not ,please try doing that once and see if that  works for you.
Try Repairing Acrobat once and see if  that helps.
Launch Acrobat>Navigate to Help>Repair Acrobat Installation.

  • Adobe Acrobat X Standard does not open PDFs made by previous versions

Adobe Acrobat X Standard keeps giving an error while opening PDFs saying that "this document requires v7 (or v8) or higher to be opened" making it impossible to open any document that was created with earlier versions. After the message the files open blank. I am using Adobe Acrobat X Standard. Any solutions?
    Thank you in advance!

This alert was created by a JavaScript code (as you can see from the title of it), which someone obviously did not write very well.
You should be able to open it if you disable JS (Edit - Preferences - JavaScript), and then you can remove this code completely (if the file is not secured).

  • Pre-installed Acrobat 9 Standard on Dell PC with Vista

My pre-installed Adobe Acrobat 9 Standard has lost its PDF Maker files when trying to create a PDF file from a Word file (Even the Acrobat tab in Word 2007 has dissappeared).  Still works with Excel files however.
I tried to Repair using installation disk but during the repair process it requests another CD.  I only got one CD with the PC.  Any ideas how I can repair the corrupted files?
    Thanks

Problem solved!  Link very helpful ...many thanks.  Office 2007 a lot different but I figured it out eventually.  Really appreciate your help.

  • Acrobat Reader X slow to open

Acrobat Reader X (10.1.0) is slow to open on some computers.
I've read that removing the 'Protected Mode' seeems to correct the problem.
    Is that right?
Is there other setups we should change?
    Thanks

Ok, so they are being opened directly in Acrobat/Reader.
In this case, Acrobat (or Reader) doesn't need to read the whole file
in the general case. A PDF file contains a large number of objects
describing what is on the pages, and the other aspects of the file.
There is an index to these objects.
So Acrobat starts by reading the index, then reads what it needs.
In some cases it may have to read next to nothing, to show the first
page of a document of many pages. In other cases it will have to read
all of the file, because (perhaps) it has one page and so everything
needed has to be read to show you that page.
The amount of data read has very little relation to the file size
(except that it should be no more than the file size). You have to
look at how the file is made up (e.g. page count? What is on pages?)
    to go further.

  • Can Acrobat DC be set to open with Tools palette closed by default?

I'd like to set Acrobat DC to open with the Tools palette closed. Is this possible? I checked the preferences but didn't see an option for this.

I'd also like to have the tools palette stay closed by default. Perhaps Adobe can add this in the next update. It's a minor annoyance to have to close it every time I use the app.
    I've submitted a feature request.

  • Acrobat 8 & Acrobat Reader 8 slow to open PDFs across WAN

I'm currently having a really strange problem with the users in one of my offices when they attempt to open PDFs with either Acrobat Pro 8.1.2 or Acrobat Reader 8.1.2. These users are connecting across a WAN via a point-to-point T1 to the main location to open these PDFs. Some are nearly 8MB and yet Acrobat Reader 8 launches and displays them in about five seconds. Literally. Yet other files, around 2.5-3MB, take about a minute to a minute and a half to open. I know the larger PDFs were created with software not from Adobe, but instead were created using this PDF printer driver made by Iteksoft. It seems the Iteksoft app creates them in such a way that AcroRead can launch and then begin displaying the file even though I know there's no way an 8MB file has copied across the WAN in just a few seconds. However, the other PDFs apparently don't have that "feature" and so the entire file must be copied before AcroRead launches. Interestingly enough, when the users had AcroRead 7 or Acrobat Pro 6 all files opened "quickly" so something has changed in Acrobat/Acrobat Pro 8 in how the app opens PDFs.
    Does anyone have any ideas?
    Joe

  • Hello, how can i modifie in the options, aplications, Adobe acrobat document, open with Adobe acrobat (in Firefox) instead of open with portable document format (default). Thanks

I can'T open pdf links in another page, because in options, aplications i have in Adobe acrobat documents open with portable document format (default) and i must put open with Adobe Acrobat (in firefox) default.
Where can i change the default?

All you now have to do is use that variable to the value property of your text field... So add this at the end of your code:
    this.getField("Conference_Option").value = ConferenceOpportunity;
Also, I would use MouseUp, not MouseDown.

  • Ran Belarc on a computer, reimaged it, now Adobe Acrobat 9 Standard isn't working with the key from Belarc. Any ideas?

Ran Belarc on two older computers and reimaged them or a client. After setting them up and finding an Adobe Acrobat 9 Standard disk I put the program back on both machines, however when I put in the serial number (which was the same for both machines according to Belarc) Acrobat said that the serial numbers were incorrect. Unsure of what the issue is here. Any help is appreciated.

    Hi behind7proxies,
Please make sure you are using the right serial number for the right installer.
Acrobat 9 Std serial key will not work for Acrobat 9 Pro software.
You might want to refer to the KB : http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-suite/kb/error-invalid-serial-number-acrobat.html

  • Acrobat 8 Standard won't open Acrobat 9 file??

    Hi All:
I received an Acrobat 9 PDF file that I need to edit, but Acrobat Standard 8 won't open it.  I can open the file using Acrobat Reader 9 on another machine, so I know the file is OK.  Are there add-ons to allow 8 Standard to work with a 9 file or, conversely, are there ways to convert a 9 file to be compatable with 8?
    Looking for help!

Thanks for the prompt comments and suggestions : )
The source of the file is travelling - are there any online tools that can convert a 9 file to an 8 file?

  • Acrobat PDF edited in Photoshop opens with different proportions in Acrobat

I opened an Adobe Acrobat drawing PDF in Photoshop. I then cropped and rotated the image in Photoshop.
When I reopened the image in Acrobat Professional, the proportions had changed. The image was stretched vertically.
How can I get the image to reopen correctly in Acrobat Professional, after editing in Photoshop? I have a feeling it has to do with a setting in Photoshop.

Thank you for replying as nobody else did.
I've already switched back to A9.
I shouldn't have to upgrade again - I should be able to use the software I just paid for.
Sorry if that sounds rude but I can't be the only person who had that issue.

  • Websites slow to open with any browser on my Macs (but not a PC)

    Hello,
We have several Macs in the house (iMac, MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, and MacBook) and all of them seem to run into problems with websites opening very slowly.  Often they get stuck and simply don't open at all.  If I close and restart the browser, the websites then appear.
My Comcast speed is about 10Mbps both up/down, and the latency was 69 ms.  It's strange that my PC laptop from the office doesn't have the same problem.  I have already tried reseting Safari, using different DNS servers, and different browsers (Chrome and Firefox).  I'm using a combination cable modem / router from Zoom, and I'm wondering if this is the problem.  I was going to purchase an Airport Extreme to see if this solves the problem, but I hesitate to start throwing money at the problem when it's consistently not a problem with a ThinkPad laptop.
Also forgot to mention that I've already tried powering down the modem/router, restarting the computers, etc.
Is there anything else that might be causing this problem?
    Thanks for any advice,
    John
