Acrobat XI Scanning and OCR Image Exact
When scanning with Acrobat XI how come I am missing the OCR feature for Searchable Image Exact?
It only has clearscan, and Searchable Image....
Don't have the scan profile do OCR.
OCR after you have the scanner's output image in the PDF file.
Then OCR Searchable Image (Exact) is available as a choice when you initiate OCR.
Using Acrobat XI Pro you can build an Action that calls out the use of Searchable Image (Exact).
OCR a directory of PDFs that hold the scanner output images.
Close out the Action with a Save As.

After scanning and OCR, when an attempt is made to seach the document, instead of locating the desired text, only a square box appears in the upper left corner of the document. Only after running OCR again from within the Adobe interface does the document become searchable. Any ideas are welcome.

Scanned and OCR'd PDF--OCR content is not indexed
I am setting up a new SharePoint 2013 install, and have put a handful files in a doc library to test search. The content has been indexed, and I can find the content inside many files and file types without issue--including "native" PDF files.
However, it doesn't seem to index the content of a scanned and OCR'd (text with image overlay) PDF. I have verified that the text is indeed in the OCR text by copying and pasting phrases, and I also confirmed that the crawl log shows the file as successfully
crawled. The filename is also indexed.
So... it would seem that the SharePoint 2013 indexer does not index the text in scanned and OCR'd PDF files. Am I missing something? Can anyone else confirm this behavior?
Thanks!
RyanTo clarify:
- From what I've read, iFilters can still be installed, but as Mikael said, they can't override the built-in file format handlers in 2013. 2013 has a built-in handler for PDFs, whereas previous versions required a PDF iFilter for indexing PDFs that have
text content. If one could install the Adobe PDF iFilter in 2013 successfully, it would resolve the issue in this thread, but PDF iFilters don't work in 2013.
- Aquaforest makes a product that OCRs PDF files. That takes an image-only PDF and makes the
file searchable, but it is not an indexer. Rather, it enables an index engine to make a big
collection of OCR'd PDF files searchable via a search engine.
- The built-in PDF handler in 2013 does index native PDFs. It does
not index OCR'd PDF files.
So, that's the issue for which I submitted the ticket to Microsoft. In our case, we don't need to OCR our PDF files--they are already OCR'd. But they don't show up in searches.
(Regarding Aquaforest... I've talked with someone there previously--for a non-SharePoint DMS--and they seem to make a cool product, but I don't have any personal experience using it.) -
Canon Pixma MG5250 scans and prints images wrongly stretched/contracted
hi!
i have a problem with my pixma 5250 which is an all in one. When i scan an image, what i get on my screen is an image with the correct width, but with a shorter height.
see this image:
i have tried two different programs to print, tried updating the driver, fiddled with scanning settings on the printer, tried several different scanning settings in the software, tried different images, but to no avail.
When i try to print, however, it seems that the effect goes the other way round: now the images i want to print are strechted along the vertical axis, but still of the same width.
see this image:
Anyone got an idea what could cause this problem? Is it a hardware thing? A driver malfunction? Maybe my OS (Win XP)? I must add that i have issues with my hard drive, and with my usb drives (i connect with my printer via wifi btw) .
Anyone has a clue? I'd be grateful.Hi thom36,
Regarding the scanning issue, I suspect what is happening is that the scanner is incorrectly detecting the end of the image at the top, causing it to crop incorrectly. Assuming you are using the MP Navigator software to scan, you should see a checkbox in the scan window for "Scan with Scanner Driver. If you put a checkmark in the box, then press Scan it will open Scangear. Within Scangear, press Preview to preview the entire image, then drag a box around the part that you want to include. Press Scan to finish scanning. Everything within the box should now be included in the final scan.
Regarding the picture you are printing, the dimensions of the original don't match the dimensions of the printed picture, so I suspect what is happening there is that it's stretching the picture to fill the whole paper. This can occur when you select borderless printing. If you print the picture without using borderless printing it will give you a true reproduction of the image. One thing to note when you do this is to make sure that the size of the picture matches the size of the paper you are using. For example, if you are printing on 4x6 paper, which I am guessing is the case in the example you provided, make sure that the picture size is no larger than 4x6, or else the entire picture will not fit onto the paper when you print it bordered.

Searchable Image vs. Searchable Image (Exact) - Quality of OCR
I work in the legal field, and have always used the "Searchable Image (Exact)" setting when running OCR in-house on document productions. I'm currently using Acrobat X when I do my own OCR.
I have a vendor who says they use Acrobat 9 "Searchable Image" for all their document productions. They say even though the actual image of the document is altered, they get better quality OCR results than they do with "Searchable Image (Exact)." They say the document is deskewed so text can be read better by the OCR engine.
My problem is that many documents are being altered. Especially architectural drawings are tilting drastically to the right, the edge of the drawing is being clipped off entirely from the document, and dotted lines are being added to the image itself -- apparently where the edge of the page used to be. This is unacceptable. They say the entire drawing is being flipped so that the first few lines of text on the drawing is horizontal. So if there is a small bit of text which is slanted, the entire drawing is tilted to adjust to that one piece of text.
Is it true that OCR is that much better using "Searchable Image" vs. "Searchable Image (Exact)"? I have to select one setting for all docs, and I'm inclined not to alter our documents in any way at the expense of OCR.
They also say that they're having trouble OCRing docs that I can OCR without a problem using both Acrobat 8 and Acrobat X. Does that make any sense? I switched directly from 8 to X so I'm not familiar with Acrobat 9.Finding PDF that have / lack OCR.
You can utilize Acrobat's Preflight(s) for this.
Regarding a PDF that won't take to OCR (and has no renderable text, although text is present).
This can happen. Occasionally I have to deal with a few of these. In all cases the source PDF came out of a non-Adobe application.
Most annoying. As the PDF is all I have I resort to a "refry" to a tabloid page size with appropriate orientation and at 400 ppi.
OCR "takes". A lesson learned - for every best practice (don't refry PDF) there can be exceptions.
Some observations (of, in my opinion, egregious activity).
--| Reprocessing to letter, portrait
Or is this a contractually specified page size/orientation?
If so, it is driving the production of problematic deliverables.
--| Refry of good PDFs to images to support OCR (for "search")
Many of your "source" PDFs have renderable text that will support search.
Example:
-- --| PDFs sourced from Word or Excel possess renderable text.
When done properly the fonts / font sub-sets are embedded and map to Unicode. This assures the PDFs' page content is searchable "as-is". Refry of a PDF to obtain an image so one can then OCR "to make searchable" is egregious.
--| PDFs of scanned images at the source paper's page size.
Why refry by printing to a smaller page size? For usability, as a true and accurate copy of the hardcopy one wants the appropriate page size and orientation. These days most 'discovery' work is done via shake 'n bake of the eDoc not the hardcopy (*).
(*) If one needs hardcopy then print it. One can create imprints to paper in a plethora of ways.
The imprint can be sized to fit the desire paper size. Of course going down in page size for a scanned image means what's on paper is not too usable. But, doing so with a PDF from CAD that is vector graphic is something else. Yes, a 44 x 34 from Microstation is "smaller" on a sheet of letter size paper. But, the imprint is crisp and usable. If you're a geezer like me you'll want a magnification "glass". But, oh my, that imprint is sweet and is usable.
--| PDF output of CAD.
Reprocessing into an image for OCR.
Most CAD applications in use can output PDF. Text will present in one or more layers on the output.
Unless the CAD fonts are of some in-house branding that fails to comply with proper "font" practices all this will be renderable. With proper font selection the font families used will map to Unicode. Thus "searchable".
If one's client does not want a PDF with layers then use an Acrobat Pro Preflight to flatten them.
Typically the text present in the PDF won't be embedded. If needed use the Acrobat Pro Preflight to embed them.
Note that some CAD output will have vector graphics (CAD file content created with the CAD application) and raster (an image). Typically legacy drawings are scanned and this image brought into the CAD file for the drawing. A designer then redraws/remasters using vector graphics. Often this is incremental (it is a time consuming activity) to process approved drawing revisions as these come in. The output PDF will have the renderable text that is associated with text placed via the CAD application. The image of text from the source raster will not be searchable. One *does not* reprocess such a PDF to an image to OCR for "search".
More (much more) is lost.
Do the trials and review what you get compared to what you had. This will validate my statement.
(I'm confident on this because I've done it -- that "what if" itch I just gotta scratch <grin>.)
A Note: OCR of "mixed" content (say a chart, plot, scanned CAD drawing having text, lines, curves, etc.) rarely yields useful OCR output. Scan a collection of these. OCR. Export / Save As to a text file. Do the compare/contrast. Or view the "hidden" text (Acrobat lets you do that). This can be a most informative exercise.
--| Always the same .... no one complains
One could write volumes on this. But then I suspect that's already been done.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Some nattering on my part.
An eDiscovery firm that has no "eDoc wranglers" is in harm's way.
(Actually, the wrangler is something of a joat. Competent understanding of the core discpline and compent understanding of the workflows to which the "eDocs" are subjected to.
Being a programmer/developer is not a prerequisite. -- You know, like it or not you've already joined the "wrangler" posse.)
If what you've described resides in content provided to clients it becomes "when" not "if" a client gets to hold the bag. This may be minor; it may be major. Regardless client ire will tend to be directed towards the eDiscovery firm not the firm's vendor(s).
Scanner and OCR don't Work in Acrobat 10.1.7
Up until yesterday, I was able to scan and OCR just fine. Today I realized that e-mailed pdf's did not OCR, instead, I got an "Unknown Error" on every non searchable pdf I was sent. I uninstalled and reinstalled, restarted, etc. and now, not only does the OCR not work, but now whenever I scan from my brother MFC scanner that worked fine yesterday, the scanning processing goes on forever with only black pages showing. For instance, a one page BW scan showed over 10 pages before I exited the process.
Also, e-mailing is much slower.
Interestingly, my Scansnap works fine for OCR (though I'm sure that isn't using Acrobat) and search of pre-OCR'd docs work fine. It's just frustrating that suddenly no docs e-mailed or faxed to me electronically can now be OCR'd.
I've tried printing to acrobat to no avail. I'd hate to have to print and re-scan just for OCR.
OCR images without text becoming blurry by default
Newbie question here.
Personally.. I don't care about the PDF-filesizes.
I'd like ALL my PDF files to be in the highest possible quality, by default.
No matter whether they involve converted Office documents or JPG-files.
Must confess, I am a bit overwhelmed by the number of settings and am unsure :
- which ones can be set as default
- which ones should be set at each new task
- how to reset Acrobat to its defaults.
I know, it is slightly off-topic as far as "Scanning & OCR" is concerned.
I am posting here because I have this problem of images (screencaptures containing text) are getting blurry
once OCR is being performed.
Based on another post here I now know that I should use 'Searchable Image (Exact)" at the OCR settings.
This made me asking here what best (highest quality) settings I should use when converting other type of documents to PDF.
e.g. noticed a number of settings when converting to PDF
=
=
Use High Quality Print or Press Quality here?
at High Quality / Press Quality - > Edit -> Images I noticed downsampling, should I set this 'Off'
=
Surely appreciate recommendations.
Involves Acrobat XI
TIA
=Hi,
Unless you use Acrobat 8 Pro's Formatted Text & Graphics" or Acrobat 9 Pro's ClearScan you will find that there is no
practicable means of editing the OCR "hidden text" in a PDF.
The TouchUp text tool (Advanced Editing toolbar) is reliant upon the selected text having an available system font to use during touchup. However, both Searchable Image and Searchable Image (Exact) OCR output is of text rendering mode 3 (invisible text) that is provided from within Acrobat and not any installed system or other application installed font.
With Searchable Image (Exact) you have the untouched image augmented by the invisible text which is provided as a user aid for search or find with Adobe Reader or Acrobat. The invisible text is not intended to support word processor like editing.
To your questions:
#1. There is no practicable way to edit invisible text (text rendering mode 3) with Acrobat (any past or current release).
#2. None.
#3. A good question. Perhaps a specialty program. Keep in mind, many products provide a promise but those those that actually deliver tend to be expensive.
Something to play with. Using Acrobat 9 Pro or Pro Extended, try the Preflight Fixup to embed hidden text.
Then try using the TouchUp Text tool. You may also want to see if you can change the font type of this newly embedded font.
(use copies of the "real" files - just in case <g>).
Acrobat Pro XI and ScanSnap iX500
I use a ScanSnap iX500 on Mac running OS !0.10.2. The ScanSnap uses an ABBYY built-in ocr engine and it generates an excellent ocr layer. I can see the OCR layer in other apps and I know it is excellent. And other apps that handle pdfs (PDFpenPro and Skim) can word search the layer perfectly. Recently, however, Acrobat Pro XI cannot word search files scanned and ocr'd by the ScanSnap, even though the layer is complete and excellent. Does anyone know what is going on or how to fix this? I have re-installed Acrobat Pro XI and the ScanSnap software (including the ABBYY part) from scratch, and all software is fully updated. This is occurring on two Macs; it is not confined to one machine.
I'm having the exact same problem with both my Macbook Pro and my iMac 5k Retina. I was ready to return my ScanSnap iX500 thinking the OCR was broken but it's Acrobat that has the problem. My ScanSnap iX500 scans the document and I have the OCR setup correctly but both Adobe Acrobat Pro XI and the Adobe Reader barely pick up any of the OCR text in the document. Pure text documents seem to be OCR readable with Adobe Acrobat Pro XI but keyword searching bills or bank statements or anything that the text is broken up into sections seems to be useless as most of the words don't show and are not searchable.
I can see the that the documents are properly OCR searchable as Mac Yosemite will index all the keywords so I can find the document in finder but acrobat can't search them. I can also keyword search properly the documents using Macs built in Preview app.
I've also tried OCR indexing the documents using the ScanSnap iX500's built in hardware, ABBYY Finereader express, Scansnap receipt, Searchable PDF converter but Acrobat won't properly keyword search any of them.
The only solution I've found is to scan the documents with or without OCR then open Adobe Acrobat Pro XI and rescan the OCR again. You can do this on one document or a Batch of documents so you could fix all your PDF's overnight. After that then Adobe Acrobat Pro XI and Adobe Reader can OCR search the documents properly.
Here's the solution I'm using until Adobe fixes Acrobat on the Mac. Just have Acrobat rescan the OCR and save the file to fix is. Instructions below:
Scan paper to PDF and apply OCR with Adobe® Acrobat® XI
Scan to PDF
Apply OCR to a scanned PDF document
Open the PDF file.
2. In Acrobat select View>Tools>TextRecognition. TheText Recognition panel in the Tools pane opens.
3. Click In This File. Designate the desired pages and click OK. Acrobat applies OCR to the scanned document. -
Question in the title...
Here is a video of me trying to scan and use OCR on two pages. I simply can't scan pages with the software. I bought it a few months ago in order to archive some paper documents, but I never managed to use it because Acrobat crashes every single time!
Also, here are two crash logs (one being an old one, and the second one being the last one from the video [I forgot to copy the first one from this video]):
I just tried with the HP Scan app and I managed to use some kind of "Adobe Mac PDF Plug-in" in order to convert everything. I had no crash... Here's a video of what I did once every pages were scan :
Also, I retried scanning with Acrobat and I had an other crash...
Yesterday, after posting here, I uninstalled my drivers and HP softwares, and tested with Apple's App Store automatic updates... I also reinstalled HP own drivers and softwares... Anyway... Nothing seems to make this work...
I guess using HP Scan and the "Adobe Mac PDF Plug-in" would be a good workflow. I can easily bring scan documents to PDF/A, but I can't apply OCR. I have to apply OCR once I'm in Acrobat.
However, this workflow is broken, because HP Scan doesn't seem to understand that us, French-Canadian, use Letter format by default, not this unknown A4 format... ... And I don't know how to change to format, neither the default format... The result is that all my scanned documents with HP Scan have A4 sizes...
I guess I'll have to call HP support or sumbit a ticket somewhere for this particular issue...
Also, maybe I should try plugging my printer directly into my Airport Extreme USB port, but I'll have to use Apple-certified manager (drivers? I don't really understand) instead of the one on HP website... Maybe Acrobat wouldn't crash with my printer plugged that way... ... This is complicated... -
I have opened scanned pages in to acrobat X1 pro and cannot edit, it says its not editable text how do I scan it as an editable text
All scanners output one thing only -- an image, a picture of the stuff on the paper that was scanned.
There is not "text". There is a picture of text characters.
This image / picture can be brought into a PDF. What is in the PDF is still an image / picture of text.
Open the PDF with Acrobat. Use Acrobat's OCR feature.
If you desire to touchup some characters use the "ClearScan" OCR.
(Review Acrobat's Help to resolve any questions on this.)
Note that PDF is not a word processor file format and does not tolerate word processor like "editing".
Use Acrobat to do touchups to characters and short character strings. Save As often.
Scan and fill form using Acrobat 6.0
How can I scan hardcopy of a form, save as PDF, open the form in Acrobat 6.0, and fill in the blanks (fields)?
Thanks Dave.
I'm aware that my 6.0 acrobat is way out of date. But I thought I created a fillable form a few years ago using it. But in that case it probably was a PDF going into the process, not a scanned form. Also, I was using vista at the time and now have win 7/64bit.
I'll try the OCR routine but your post suggests what I suspected, that I can't get to where I'm going from here.
As Acrobat 6 went out of support / obsolete many years ago you'll want to be sure the OS is compatible and the scanner software is compatible.
Use Acrobat's create PDF from scanner feature (review the Help file if needed, the Help PDF was installed when Acrobat 6 was installed).
So, you'll now have that PDF.
But, it is not yet a form PDF.
The scanner output is an image so you have an image / a picture as the PDF page content.
You may want to use Acrobat's OCR feature to provide a hidden layer of renderable characters.
Use Acrobat's form tools to build your form. As Acrobat 6 is long ago gone by I don't recall if it had a "form wizard". Check the Help PDF.
Acrobat 9 OCR and "OCR Suspects"
I downloaded the trial for version 9.
Took a poorly scanned page and OCR'd it.
It (expectedly) had a few errors.
Then I selected "OCR Suspects" from menus.
What it should have done is found the "low confidence" results, but
instead, it said no OCR suspects were found.
This used to work in version 8, but I can't get 'OCR suspects' working in V9 trial.
Can anyone confirm if this works in the full version of Acrobat 9 Pro or Standard?It's strange that while I posted to this Adobe forum, there is a response over at objectmix.com. As contributing to this topic from 2 locations seems confusing, I'll carry on here.
Amannagpal76 responded, saying in part that ClearScan in 9 Pro replaces Formatted Text & Graphics. Good to know this. ClearScan does, however, continue the mix. If ocr doesn't work on a character graphic, that graphic will continue to be displayed as such, amidst ClearScan's synthesized type 3 font imitation of the original font. This is most obvious when using the marquee zoom tool.
Aman suggests using the Touchup Text Tool and changing the font to any font installed on one's system. This doesn't work for ClearScan. Selecting a different font in Touchup for a PDF that came via a wordprocessor works fine, but not for a PDF that came via a scan. That, unfortunately, is the only time that ClearScan is used. The error message when I try this states that there's no system font to match the one in ClearScan, and text can't be added or deleted.
ClearScan is remarkable for the small size file it produces. That size can be reduced considerably even further by converting it to the Adobe 7 file format. ClearScan's synthesized font is also remarkable when enlarging the page on screen. Then you can see its true outlines -- rather chewed up in high magnification, but that's OK. It would be nice to extract the font in question and use it on one's system. One downside to ClearScan is that its ocr fails to retain italics when output to RTF and Word.
I have never found a suspect in 9 Pro.
The conclusion from the above is that the hidden text produced by any ocr'ing in 9 Pro can't be corrected. -
I scanned document to acrobat 9 standard and I can not see it to review.
I scanned a document to acrobat 9 sandard.
When I went to review it the pages were grey and I could not see what I had scanned in.
What could I have done wrong?
Or, is a setting on acrobat set wrong from prior use ( I recently reinstalled due to a virus in my computer).
Thanks very much!The image that is the output of a scanner is controlled by the scanner software not Acrobat.
Something to try. Configure your scanner to process out an image at 300 ppi and as a Black and White image.
Output to a TIFF (from the scanner).
Launch Acrobat - use the create PDF from file feature to 'pick up' the TIFF and create the PDF.
Setting Adobe Acrobat as a scan destination in Image Capture?
Is there a way of setting Adobe Acrobat as the default scan destination in Image Capture?
Yes, I can do that...but is there a way of setting it as a default?..so that it pops up in the main choices...(alongside Preview, Aperture, etc) so that I don't have to go and look for it every time.
Using Adobe Acrobat v9.0, and a HP Lserjet M1212nf with multi-page document feeder. How do I switch scan source from just the scanner bed to feed from the document feeder?
{Personal Information Removed}Hello MN42
Printing duplex and scanning duplex are two completely different things and rely on two different hardware components. The back of the printer has a duplexing unit for flipping the page while printing. In order to scan duplexed documents "automatically" you need to have an Automatic Document Feeder (ADF) that supports duplexing as well.
As per your inquiry, if you scan from the Officejet 6700 software you can flip the pages manually from the flat bed into a single PDF document. See the image below. Let me know if you need any additional assistance.
Don't forgot to say thanks by giving "Kudos" to those that help solve your problems.
